England NXGN Nine: The football wonderkids set for careers with the Three Lions

NXGN has selected the best English players born on or after January 1, 2004 – but will they go on to fulfill their potential in the coming years?

The NXGN Nine for 2023 has been revealed, with nine elite teenage ballers having been selected as the best in the world among those born in 2004 or later. There were, though, no English players on the list, so where are the wonderkids who could be set for Three Lions honours in the future?

England did, after all, win the Under-19 European Championship in the summer of 2022, while Premier League academies are churning out plenty of homegrown youngsters who have begun making their mark on the top-flight.

Over in Europe, meanwhile, there are increasing numbers of English players making the move and trying to break into teams on the continent after impressing in their youth ranks.

    Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (Borussia Dortmund)

Leaving Manchester City’s academy to join Dortmund certainly worked for former NXGN winner Jadon Sancho, so why shouldn’t it work for another English winger?

Bynoe-Gittens moved to Germany in 2020, and though injuries limited his impact during his first two seasons, the 18-year-old is now a key member of the first-team squad and has already scored a number of key Bundesliga goals.

He was also an important player for England’s U19 European Championship-winning side in the summer of 2022, with his pace and trickery while cutting inside from the left making him a nightmare for opposition defenders.

    Alfie Devine (Tottenham)

Tottenham's youngest-ever player and goalscorer, Devine is closing in on making a proper breakthrough into the first team in north London having been one of the most impressive performers in English youth football over the past few years.

An attacking midfielder who is also capable of playing as a wide forward, Devine joined Tottenham from Wigan Athletic in 2020, and has been included on the bench by Antonio Conte on a number of occasions this season.

A key part of England's U19 European Championship-winning team in 2022, the 18-year-old has also been praised for his leadership qualities, and could become a captaincy option at both club and international level in the future.

    Lewis Hall (Chelsea)

Premier League supporters have seen Hall emerge as an energetic left-back over the past few months at Chelsea, but it is actually in central midfield where the 18-year-old is most comfortable.

That versatility is perhaps Hall’s greatest asset, meaning he has been able to play with confidence that belies his years in a variety of roles when given opportunities by both Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter.

There have been some concerns that the Blues’ lavish spending could lead to the pathway from academy to firstteam at Stamford Bridge being blocked, but Hall has shown he is good enough to become a regular contributor over the next few years at least.

    Rico Lewis (Manchester City)

It takes a special player to earn Pep Guardiola’s trust at the age of 18, but Lewis certainly seems to have done this season having become a regular in the Premier League champions’ starting line-up.

The youngest player to ever score when starting their first Champions League match, the England youth international has shown an aptitude to learn over the past months after adapting his game brilliantly to play as one of Guardiola’s famed full-back/central midfield hybrids.

Talk of a full international call up from England has already begun, and it is now expected that Lewis will be Kyle Walker’s long-term replacement at the Etihad Stadium.

Pedri to the rescue for Barcelona! Winners, losers & ratings as injury-hit La Liga leaders seal narrow win over Celta Vigo

Barcelona moved back to the top of the La Liga table with a 1-0 win over Celta Vigo at Camp Nou, thanks to a first half effort from Pedri.

Barcelona had teenagers Pedri and Gavi to thank after returning to the top of the table ahead of next weekend’s trip to the Santiago Bernabeu to face Real Madrid.

Xavi had to prepare his squad for the contest while coping with a long list of injury absentees, including the likes of Franck Kessie, Andreas Christensen, Ronald Araujo and Hector Bellerin.

Despite the loss of some key men, Barca took an early lead when Gavi teed up Pedri to open the scoring in the 17th minute.

Barcelona were dominant in the first 45 minutes and were good value for their half-time lead but Celta came roaring back after the break and had chances to equalise.

Strand Larsen did get the ball in the back of the net for the visitors but Barcelona escaped when it was ruled out for an offside in the build-up.

Goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen then saved from Iago Aspas in the closing stages as Barca hung on to three vital points that will see them arrive at the Santiago Bernabeu on October 16 above Real Madrid in the table.

GettyWinners

Pedri: The Barcelona teenager got his name on the scoresheet for just the second time this season with the opening goal. He made the run into the penalty area and was rewarded when the ball broke kindly to him, giving him a very simple finish.

Barcelona have been reliant on Robert Lewandowski for goals this season and Pedri’s strike is exactly what Xavi will want from his midfielder this season.

The 19-year-old has now scored eight goals in La Liga so far from just 16 shots on target.

Gavi: The teenager was the absolute star of the show for Barcelona with a typically tenacious, hard-working and thoroughly effective performance. He drove the Catalans on and was a big reason why Xavi’s side took home all three points.

The first goal came from Gavi’s drive and desire to make things happen. The teenager escaped down the left and put a ball into the box which was finished off by Pedri to give Barcelona the lead.

Gavi followed that up with a brilliant piece of play that summed him up completely. The teenager chased back and put in a superb challenge to take the ball off Iago Aspas, seconds later he was connecting with a cross at the far post and was inches away from scoring. Absolutely Relentless.

Barcelona left-backs: Xavi named not one, not two but three left-backs in his starting XI for the clash against Celta after seeing Araujo, Kounde, Christensen and Bellerin all ruled out through injury.

Eric Garcia was left on the bench, perhaps with one eye on Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Inter, leaving Xavi to start young left-back Alejandro Balde on the right, with Jordi Alba on the opposite flank and Marcos Alonso in the middle alongside Pique.

It was a patched-up defence and had a few shaky moments, especially in the second half, but ultimately did the job against Aspas and Co. The results also means that Barcelona have still only conceded once in La Liga so far this season.

AdvertisementGettyLosers

Ferran Torres: The Spain international was handed a rare start by Xavi but did little to suggest he should stay in the starting XI ahead of key games against Inter and Real Madrid.

Torres is struggling for form and confidence and an early miss will have done little to help his cause. Another tame shot was comfortably saved by goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin.

The January signing was replaced by Ansu Fati just after the hour mark and he will have to get used to life back on the bench.

Raphinha: The Brazilian was back on the right flank for Barcelona after a tough time on the left against Inter in midweek in the Champions League.

Raphinha certainly didn't lack for effort but is struggling to convince at Camp Nou right now. He tested Marchesín with an early shot from range but the goalkeeper was equal to it.

The summer arrival was then left furious after being denied a penalty in the first half and was hooked for Ousmane Dembele on the hour.

Iago Aspas: The Celta Vigo striker usually loves playing Barcelona and headed to Camp Nou with 10 goals in 15 games against the Catalan giants.

The striker’s eyes may have lit up when he saw Xavi’s teamsheet too, with three left-backs in the back four, but the hosts coped with the threat of Aspas well.

Aspas also spurned a glorious chance to equalise with 83 minutes on the clock. The striker only had Marc-Andre ter Stegen to beat inside the penalty area but saw his effort saved by the German's right boot.

GettyBarcelona Ratings: Defence

Marc-Andre ter Stegen (7/10): Another clean sheet for the goalkeeper who has still only been beaten once this season. Made an important stop from Aspas late on to preserve the win for the hosts.

Alejandro Balde (6/10): The teenage left-back was deployed on the right once again due to Barca’s injury problems and put in a solid shift. Replaced late on by Sergi Roberto.

Gerard Pique (7/10): Started the season on the bench but Barca's injury crisis has allowed him back into the starting XI. Put in a solid showing and had a chance at the other end with a header that flew over.

Marcos Alonso (6/10): The left-back partnered Gerard Pique at centre-back and did a good job up against Aspas. Brilliant block to deny Oscar in the second half.

Jordi Alba (6/10): Back in the starting XI and put some quality deliveries in the Celta penalty early on but was guilty of some sloppy passing that put Barca in trouble after the break.

Sergio Busquets (6/10): Had to drop really deep in the second half as Celta pressed hard for the equaliser. Could be seen urging his team-mates on as the visitors threatened a comeback.

Gavi (8/10): An all-action showing from the teenager. Was absolutely everywhere and set up the first goal for Pedri.

Pedri (8/10): Followed Gavi into the box and was on hand to net the winner with his second goal of the season. Won’t score many easier goals in his career.

Warwickshire escape pitch penalty

Warwickshire will face no penalty for the pitch prepared for the County Championship match against Somerset at Edgbaston which was rated “poor” by the umpires for uneven bounce.Eighteen wickets fell on the second day and numerous batsmen were struck on the body before rain wiped out the rest of the match.A report compiled by the cricket liaison officer in attendance for the game was submitted to the cricket discipline commission while the ECB pitch consultant visited Edgbaston to produce his own report. The Chairman of the CDC considered these reports against the requirement that “each county shall actively seek to prepare the best quality cricket pitch that it can for the match that it is staging” and concluded that there was no evidence to suggest that Warwickshire had breached this requirement. After finding out the pitch would be reported Dougie Brown, Warwickshire’s director of cricket, said: “It was not the type of pitch we wanted. There were cracks but was it dangerous? No.”We all know here that Gary Barwell is the best groundsman in the country by a mile. He was preparing this pitch 14/16 days ahead, as always, and when he started it was in snow and ice. Then the weather flipped on its head and suddenly it was very hot, so the drying process was accelerated by the weather.”When the cricket liaison officer said the pitch had been reported we were incredibly surprised.”The uneven surface went against the trend of the season so far which has seen more batsman-friendly pitches following the decision to give the visiting team the option to bowl first without a toss. Before the current round of the Championship matches began there had been just eight positives results in the two divisions.

Australian flavour to Roses clash

ESPNcricinfo previews the latest round of matches in the T20 Blast with both groups tightly packed

Will Macpherson03-Jul-2015North GroupDurham v Leicestershire, Chester-le-Street, 5.30Leicestershire head into a weekend double-header riding high after pulling off a remarkable heist – with a wicket from the final ball – to claim a tie against Yorkshire last week. They sit third in the congested North Group and have both O’Briens – Kevin and Niall – available before they join Ireland’s bid to qualify for next year’s World T20. Durham’s Scotland star Calum McLeod is also available before he heads off to the qualifiers. So crowded is the North Group that while Durham sit sixth, they are just two points behind second-placed Worcestershire and two ahead of table-proppers Derbyshire. As with the County Championship defeat to Yorkshire earlier this week, the injured Paul Coughlin is replaced in the squad by Jamie Harrison, who hopes to make his T20 bow three seasons after his maiden first-class and List A appearances for the club. Leicestershire face four Blast matches in ten days – as well as a Championship match against Kent – and have named a 15-man squad for this match, including youngsters Lewis Hill, Aadil Ali and Rob Sayer, as well as in-form former Durham man Ben Raine.Lancashire v Yorkshire, Old Trafford, 6.30The Roses clash, following one for the ages at Headingley last month which Jos Buttler’s outrageous 71 won for Lancashire, has a distinctly Australian feel, with Yorkshire’s Glenn Maxwell and Aaron Finch lining up opposite their World Cup winning team-mate James Faulkner. Lancashire have lost three of their four games since Buttler’s knock but still sit a point ahead of Yorkshire in the table – both are outside the top four – as they scramble for qualification. Finch will have fond memories of this fixture last season, when he smashed 88 in 55 balls to help Yorkshire to a five-wicket win.Aussies aplenty, but both sides are missing England stars, with Buttler unavailable for Lancashire and Adil Rashid joining Joe Root, Adam Lyth and Gary Ballance among Yorkshire’s absentees. Man of the moment Jonny Bairstow remains, but Liam Plunkett is injured, while spinners James Middlebrook and Karl Carver are called up in Rashid’s stead. Lancashire have named the eleven who lost by one run to Warwickshire last week, plus Tom Bailey and Saqib Mahmood.Nottinghamshire v Worcestershire, Trent Bridge, 6.30Seventh-placed Nottinghamshire can draw level with second-placed Worcestershire with a win but they will have to do without star men James Taylor and Luke Fletcher, who both picked up hamstring injuries in the Championship match between the two sides this week. Riki Wessels, playing his 100th T20 in England, will captain the side in Taylor’s place. Even with the group so tight, Nottinghamshire can barely afford another defeat if they are to continue their run of five consecutive home quarter-finals. Sam Wood and Will Gidman take places in the squad after missing out against Northamptonshire on Sunday. Worcestershire are hoping to win four away games on the bounce for the first time in this format.Birmingham v Derbyshire, Edgbaston, 6.30It is top plays bottom at Edgbaston as star draw Brendon McCullum makes his home debut for high-flying Birmingham Bears who have won six of their first eight matches and 12 of their last 14 in the format. They sit two points clear at the top of the North Group after their dramatic, traffic-defying, weather-beating one-run win over Lancashire last Friday. Birmingham have named an unchanged squad while Derbyshire – who are bottom of the group but just four points off second after an important victory over Nottinghamshire last week – have named a squad containing the 11 players involved in that game, as well as batsman Ben Slater.South GroupSomerset v Gloucestershire, Taunton, 5.30Gloucestershire’s dramatic last-ball defeat to Surrey at Kia Oval on Wednesday leaves them a point and a position behind sixth-placed Somerset, leaving plenty riding on this game as the group stages reach the business end. Gloucestershire boast the tournament’s joint leading run-scorer – Michael Klinger with 520 – and wicket-taker – Tom Smith with 20 – but captain Klinger said after the defeat to Surrey that they now need to win all of their remaining fixtures to qualify for the knockouts.Recent history, however, is not in Gloucestershire’s favour. Somerset have won the last five fixtures between the two teams, including last month’s five-wicket win in Bristol. For Gloucestershire, Liam Norwell – is replaced in the squad by Miles Hammond, while Somerset add Craig Overton and Lewis Gregory to the XI that were pipped by Glamorgan at Taunton on Sunday.Surrey v Middlesex, Kia Oval, 6.30The first London derby of 2015 takes place after the two bottom sides in the South Group enjoyed contrasting midweek home games. Surrey will be in confident mood; Azhar Mahmood’s last-ball six against Gloucestershire gave them their second win on the spin, and they’ve won seven of their last eight against their rivals from across town. Mahmood, meanwhile has 11 more T20 wickets against Middlesex than anyone else (32) and has dismissed skipper Eoin Morgan six times in the format. Only the seven times Zaheer Khan’s has snared MS Dhoni gives a bowler more dismissals of a single batsman in T20 cricket. For Surrey, Freddie van den Bergh has been added to the 13-man squad for the win over Gloucestershire, while bottom-placed Middlesex, seeking to avoid a sixth consecutive defeat, have overhauled the squad that was thrashed by Sussex at Lord’s on Thursday. Mitchell McClenaghan is out with a badly broken and dislocated finger, while experienced men James Franklin and Nick Compton make way, with Ryan Higgins, Nick Gubbins, George Scott and Gurjit Sandhu all vying for places in the side.Hampshire v Glamorgan, Ageas Bowl, 7.00pmThese two sides are jostling for position in mid-table in the South Group. Hampshire – who have qualified for the knockout stages for the last five seasons – are battling to avoid losing three consecutive T20s for the first time since 2007 and the only change to the squad for the defeat to a Jesse Ryder-inspired Essex last Friday is the absence of allrounder Liam Dawson, who has headed to Chelmsford on loan, while Joe Gatting is expected to make his first T20 appearance of the season in place of the injured Sean Ervine.Glamorgan’s hopes of qualification for the knockout stages took a boost with their outstanding win at Taunton last Sunday but in that game they bid farewell to South African Wayne Parnell, whose stint with the county ended. Graham Wagg misses out with a lower back injury, while England U-19 star Aneurin Donald – who is available after completing his A-Levels – is in line to make his T20 debut.Sussex v Kent, Hove, 7.00pmSussex thrashed Middlesex at Lord’s on Thursday – their fourth win on the spin – to go top of the South Group but Kent, who have played a game less, can overtake them with a win in front of a sell-out crowd at Hove.Kent will be without death bowling specialist David Griffiths for the rest of the campaign after he underwent surgery on his back this week, but they welcome back Sam Billings from England duty, as well as Matt Coles and Darren Stevens, who sat out their clash with the Australians with minor injuries. Stevens needs just eight runs to become the first man to 3000 domestic runs in English cricket, while Oxford MCCU captain Sam Weller – a 20-year-old pace bowler – is also named in the squad for the first time. Sussex have named an unchanged squad.

Uncapped offspinner Tharindu Kaushal replaces Herath, could play SA

In a late move Sri Lanka have replaced injured left-arm spinner Rangana Herath with uncapped 22-year old offspinner Tharindu Kaushal in their squad ahead of the quarter-final against South Africa on Wednesday. The ICC approval for the replacement came about two hours before the toss in Sydney, but even before that team manager Michael de Zoysa said Kaushal “could and should be in contention” for the match.Sri Lanka had given Herath as much time as possible to recover from the cut he sustained to his spinning finger against England on March 1. However, he was not able to bowl more than two overs in the nets on Tuesday, and is expected to be unfit for another week. Though Herath cannot be reinstated in the squad if Kaushal replaces him, he will stay with the team while he recovers in case a vacancy arises through injury to another player.”He could come back in if someone else gets injured,” de Zoysa said. “You never know, these things keep happening to our team.”Herath’s exit from the squad is a significant blow to an attack that has relied on his control during the middle overs. However, Kaushal has been training with the squad in Australia for more than a week, effectively as cover for Herath. Though he is a relative unknown at international level, Kaushal has carved out an exceptional domestic record in his three seasons at senior level. In 29 List A matches, he has 49 wickets at 18.34. He has also been in impressive form in the past few weeks, claiming 47 wickets at 18.82 in the Premier League tournament – Sri Lanka’s first-class competition. On Tuesday, the eve of the match, Angelo Mathews had said Kaushal’s inclusion for the quarter-final was “an option” for Sri Lanka, but they also have legspinner Seekkuge Prasanna and offspinner Sachithra Senanayake in the squad. However, it would appear strange that Sri Lanka would enter a third specialist spinner into the squad unless he has a chance of playing, given batsman Kithuruwan Vithanage is also traveling with the squad, and could have been drafted in for Herath.Herath is the fifth Sri Lanka player to sustain an injury and be replaced from the original squad. Seamer Dhammika Prasad, batsmen Dimuth Karunaratne and Dinesh Chandimal, and legspinning allrounder Jeevan Mendis had all been forced out through injury during the campaign. Herath played four matches in the tournament.0120 GMT The story was updated to reflect the ICC’s approval of Tharindu Kaushal as Rangana Herath’s replacement
