Rajasthan pick four as franchises focus on Ranji final

Rajasthan Royals have picked four players from the Rajasthan Ranji squad as a part of their uncapped basket. Aakash Chopra is the most prominent name among the pickings

Aakash Chopra, who hasn’t played for India for over five years, is considered ‘uncapped’ by the IPL•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Rajasthan Royals have picked four players from the Rajasthan Ranji squad and Mumbai batsman Ajinkya Rahane as a part of their uncapped basket. Aakash Chopra is the most prominent name among the Rajasthan players signed with the other three being middle-order batsman Ashok Menaria, seamer Deepak Chahar and wicketkeeper Dishant Harendra Yagnik. Along with Chopra, who moved to Rajasthan as a professional from his home state of Delhi this season, both Menaria and Chahar’s spectacular performances helped Rajasthan reach the Ranji Trophy final after 36 years.Rahane has been a prolific scorer in domestic cricket, and averages 69.01 from 47 first-class games, and 40.41 from 43 List A matches. He was a crucial factor in Mumbai’s 38th and 39th Ranji title wins, making 1089 and 809 runs.”We are pretty happy with what we have got,” Sean Morris, the Rajasthan franchise’s CEO, said. Morris also explained how Chopra, a former India Test opener, was an uncapped player. “According to the IPL rules if a player has not played for India in the last five seasons he automatically becomes uncapped,” he said. Chopra, who played the first two IPL seasons with Kolkata Knight Riders, confirmed the development.Meanwhile Rajasthan’s Ranji captain Hrishikesh Kanitkar has been approached by Kochi. “We are talking to him,” Mehul Shah, one of the Kochi owners said. It is also understood that Pune Warriors have come to an agreement with Kamran Khan, the left-arm fast bowler who played for Rajasthan in the second IPL, but was sent back midway during the campaign to correct his action, which was found to be questionable.Kolkata Knightriders have sent in “10-12” requests to IPL for players they would be interested in. Royal Challengers Bangalore were negotiating with hometown boy Mayank Agarwal, who was part of the India Under-19 World Cup team last year. The Baroda Ranji side has attracted attention as well, with captain Pinal Shah, left-arm spinner Bhargav Bhatt, allrounder Swapnil Singh, batsman Kedar Devdhar and seamer Murtuja Vahora said to be in advanced stages of discussions with some franchises. Two days after the auction, all ten franchises have been frantically hunting for quality uncapped players, a scarce commodity in Indian cricket. Various team owners rushed to Baroda hours after the weekend auction to woo players like Ambati Rayudu, one of the performers in IPL 2010 and a vital part of Mumbai Indians’ run to the final. The buzz at the Moti Bagh ground was in contrast to the Ranji semi-final, which was played at the Reliance Stadium in Baroda, watched mostly by journalists, a handful of spectators, and a few stray dogs. Not that the cricket so far has been attractive enough to drive fans to the ground, but the rush among the IPL franchises to sign uncapped domestic players suddenly turned the spotlight on a domestic match.Siddhartha Mallya, owner of Bangalore, checked in on Monday morning as teams were getting ready for the final net season before the final day. While Mallya was one of the early IPL birds to arrive in Vadodara, there are reports that many more are headed to the city which is home to Chirayu Amin, head of the IPL governing council, and also the president of the Baroda Cricket Association. Among those expected to arrive tomorrow are Manoj Badale, co-owner of the Rajasthan Royals, Ness Wadia, co-owner of the Kings XI Punjab, and Geoff Lawson, coach of the Kochi team. Amin himself was at the ground today, and apparently it was one of the extremely rare occasions on which the president has been seen at a domestic match in Vadodara.

Kulusevski could dethrone Son at Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur could have a new king in town…

Son shocker

For a long time, Heung-min Son has been one of the standout performers for the club and to some extent he still is. After all, he leads the way for goals scored (ten) and creativity (five assists, 45 key passes) in the Premier League.

However, his recent form has been rather questionable and whilst it could be attributed to burnout having played so many matches this season (only three players have managed more minutes), at 29 years of age, it could be time to think of the future amid some pretty poor showings.

For instance, in the defeat to Burnley, he failed to register a single shot on target, whilst against Championship outfit Middlesbrough, none of his four attempts on target resulted in a shot as Spurs crashed out of the FA Cup in extra time.

It was a performance that Press Association journalist Jonathan Veal described as “shocking” on social media at the end of the 90 minutes.

This is likely just a blip for the South Korean sensation but he isn’t going to be around forever and now that there’s a new man in town, his place isn’t as secure as it once was.

Swedish successor

“Gimme, gimme, gimme a ginger from Sweden, Number 21, His name is Kulusevski.” is what the Lilywhites faithful have already been singing around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It’s fair to suggest that Dejan Kulusevski has made an instant impact at the club ever since he arrived from Juventus on deadline day.

The 21-year-old has already made seven appearances in the past month, in which three have been starts in the Premier League, where he has provided two goals and one assist, via Transfermarkt.

That’s a direct goal contribution once every 111 minutes. If he keeps that up, then that’s on par with Son over the course of his near seven-year Spurs career.

The similarities do not stop there either.

Kulusevski has recently been lauded as a “dangerous” player who’s just like the 29-year-old by journalist Paul Brown.

“He’s like Son, very good at bombing forward on the break. He’s not afraid to take people on and he’ll have a shot or two,” he told GIVEMESPORT.  “He’s looked quite dangerous since he’s been there, and I think he’s going to be a goal threat and will score goals.”

Whilst initially joining on an 18-month loan, Spurs do have a £29.2m option to buy and that will undoubtedly be triggered should he continue to light it up this season.

Conte has even described the £27m-rated Sweden international as a “perfect player” for Spurs to The Athletic, whilst Italian Football expert Nima Tavallaey Roodsari once dubbed him a “monster”.

If anyone’s going to dethrone Son, then Kulusevski seems like a pretty likely candidate and on recent form alone, it’s the latter who deserves a place in Conte’s starting XI.

Crystal Palace: Mitchell a doubt v Chelsea

Crystal Palace left-back Tyrick Mitchell could miss the FA Cup semi-final with Chelsea through injury, according to The Evening Standard.

The Lowdown: Mitchell goes off

Labelled as ‘popular’ by former Eagles boss Roy Hodgson, the defender was forced off against Leicester City in his team’s 2-1 defeat on Sunday.

The 22-year-old has been a key member of Patrick Vieira’s squad during his first season in charge, starting every Premier League game.

However, he had to make way against the Foxes after just 34 minutes with what appeared to be a calf problem, and along with Michael Olise, he could now be in a race against time to feature at Wembley.

The Latest: Nervous wait

The Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick shared a story regarding Mitchell on Monday.

He revealed that the full-back was due for scans on the problem on Monday, with Palace facing a nervous wait on the extent of the damage.

The Verdict: Fingers crossed

As mentioned, Mitchell has been an ever-present figure at Selhurst Park this season, so it would be a major blow if he is unable to feature at Wembley next weekend.

The Palace academy graduate has been their best-performing defender, as per WhoScored, and he is the only senior out-and-out left-back on the books for the Eagles.

Vieira will be keeping everything crossed that Mitchell can recover in time, as otherwise he will have a few selection headaches over the coming days.

Spurs: Milan in talks over Tanganga loan

According to Charlie Eccleshare of The Athletic, talks between Tottenham and Milan are ‘expected to continue’ over the possible loan move of defender Japhet Tanganga.

The Lowdown: Increased playing time but more criticism

The 22-year-old centre-back has seen increased game-time this season, having made 11 Premier League appearances, 10 of which came in the starting XI. Tanganga’s ability to play in a number of positions across the back line has proven to be an invaluable asset for Spurs – he has been employed as a centre-back, right-back, left-back and even as a right midfielder during the current campaign.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

However, the defender has been on the receiving end of some criticism this year following a string of poor performances. Having averaged a tame 6.65 SofaScore rating, Tanganga has often been blamed for being the reason as to why Spurs have been shipping goals regularly; Premier League legend Rio Ferdinand described his performance in the 3-0 thrashing by Crystal Palace as being costly for Spurs, on a day that he demonstrated ‘a lack of experience’ throughout.

The Latest: Spurs and Milan in talks over Tanganga

As per Eccleshare on Twitter on Monday morning, talks between Tottenham and Milan are ‘expected to continue today’ over the possibility of a loan move for Japhet Tanganga.

Despite the aforementioned criticism, Spurs are wary of letting the defender go, as he has started the club’s last five games. However, if they do end up sanctioning the transfer, they would only permit a loan with an obligation to buy, whereas Milan want a straight loan deal.

The Verdict: A loan move could be the right decision

Tanganga reportedly ‘wants to stay’ at the north London club, but he is aware that the returns of central defenders Eric Dier and Cristian Romero could reduce his game-time over the remainder of the season.

However, joining the Serie A club could prove to be the right decision for Tanganga, who last August was hailed as a ‘really special’ player by Gary Neville.

If he ends up being shunted out of Antonio Conte’s starting XI, he may need to go somewhere he would enjoy regular top-flight football. Up to now, the 22-year-old has been thrown in and out of the starting XI by various Spurs managers, only utilised when he’s needed to fill in at the back due his ability to play anywhere across the defence.

Therefore, this prospective loan move could prove to be a blessing for Tanganga – that’s if the two clubs can come to an agreement over the arrangement of the deal.

Collingwood savours triumph at the end of a long journey

The transformation is complete. The ECB can hunt for those keys to the trophy cabinet, silverware is on the way to Lord’s. As they have been since the start of the Super Eights, England were magnificent as they powered past the previously indomitable Australia. It was quite fitting that Paul Collingwood was there in the middle to hit the winning runs with a six and two fours. He had been a reluctant leader of this side when it was decided that Andrew Strauss didn’t have a place in Twenty20, but along with Andy Flower, who is developing a reputation as one of the game’s finest coaches, has formed a limited-overs unit that might already be regarded as England’s greatest of all time.Collingwood had a lean tournament with the bat but that didn’t matter a jot as he was chased around the Kensington Oval by Kevin Pietersen, followed close behind by their ecstatic team-mates. After waiting 35 years there was a lot of pent-up emotion to release. What made the achievement even more remarkable was that England cruised to victory and any nerves were purely with the English fans who have been so used to one-day failure.”This is a very special moment,” Collingwood said. “This is right up there, with the best, the guys deserve everything they’ve got today. We’ve won a World Cup, and you can never take that away from us. We thoroughly deserve the victory, because the way we’ve played throughout the tournament has been consistent and also [we’ve been] taking the game to the opposition.”We’ve had a lot of belief, and the guys have thought very well for themselves and made the right decisions. In the end, we’ve turned up on a big occasion like this and we’ve performed. I’m absolutely delighted with the guys. We knew it was a monkey on our back. We knew what it meant, and that is why I am so pleased that these last two performances in such pressurised situations were absolutely spot on.”In fact, they played like a side that had been winning tournaments for years. After the tension in Guyana where the weather nearly scuppered their chances, everything the team has touched has turned to gold. Ryan Sidebottom, a controversial selection ahead of James Anderson at the beginning of the competition, continued to justify his place with two vital early wickets (and he stayed fit throughout). Even the move to give Luke Wright his only over of the tournament, when Michael Yardy proved expensive, paid dividends as he removed the dangerous Cameron White.England began the chase in a measured fashion, aware of the new-ball threat from Dirk Nannes and Shaun Tait, but they were still well ahead after the Powerplay with 41 for 1 compared to 24 for 3 by Australia.Craig Kieswetter converted his start into a substantial contribution and Pietersen completed a memorable week with a stroke-filled 47 that included a front-foot drive for six off Tait. England’s limited-overs cricket has never been so vibrant with the one-day side also making significant strides, and all of a sudden the World Cup next year isn’t something to be dreaded.”You can see from the way the guys have gone out from the first ball, believing in themselves, taking it to the opposition and playing a brand of cricket that is unlike England in the past,” Collingwood said. “I think a lot of credit goes to every single player in the dressing room, to have the confidence to go out there and really give it their best shots and have no regrets. I think we have done that throughout the tournament and it has certainly paid off.”Never has an England team fielded better – Stuart Broad’s horrid drop off David Hussey notwithstanding – while they have also rarely seemed a happier unit. That is obviously easy to do when you are winning, but the strides the side have made in the 18 months are remarkable given the state they were in when Pietersen and Peter Moores lost their jobs. A large part of that has been down to Andrew Strauss, whose efforts weren’t forgotten by the Twenty20 skipper.”Straussy comes back as captain, and we’ll get his team ethos and ideas,” Collingwood said. “That’s been a big part of this victory as well – what Andy Flower and Andrew Strauss have done over the past year. It’s been magnificent, and they’ve got the team pointing in the right direction.”After the fallout from the 2005 Ashes victory celebrations, English cricket has learnt to handle success with a little more composure. An open-top bus tour is unlikely and the likes of Yardy, Tim Bresnan and Eoin Morgan will have to wait a little longer for their MBEs. As was the case after last summer’s Ashes triumph there is already talk of looking forward, but the team will enjoy this victory first.”We’re not going to get carried away – well, we are for the next couple of days,” Collingwood joked. “We’re going to savour the moment and enjoy it, because we deserve to. But good teams kick on, and that’s exactly what we’ll get drilled into the guys. We’ve got a lot more potential as well – that’s the scary part about it. We can go even further.”But this is what we came here to achieve, and we’ve done it. The next step is to savour the moment, celebrate as a team – and then we’ll come across the next hurdle.”The biggest issue facing the team is now a race to get home before ahead of the volcanic ash cloud, but given what they have achieved over the last two weeks they might be able to beat that as well.

NUFC: Dud’s value has plummeted since 2018

Newcastle are currently 18th in the Premier League table, and one of the biggest reasons behind their struggles has been their lack of quality in defence.

Only Norwich (45) have conceded more goals than the Magpies (43) in the top flight, which highlights how poor they have been at the back this season.

One of their defenders who has struggled on and off the pitch is Federico Fernandez. The £45k-per-week dud has only started five Premier League matches this term and has been unable to catch the eye when he has played, which is a far cry from where he was at the start of his career on Tyneside.

In December 2018, Transfermarkt valued him at £7.2m. This came after his final season for Swansea and the first half of his debut campaign at St. James’ Park, with the centre-back averaging a solid WhoScored rating of 6.76 in the top flight with the Welsh outfit.

He then averaged a score of 6.73 with Newcastle in the Premier League in the 2019/20 campaign as he proved to be a reliable performer during that time. However, his displays have taken a nosedive since then, averaging a score of 6.64 last term and a dismal 6.37 this season. This suggests that he has been regressing over time and is not the same player he was two or three years ago.

Fernandez has also had availability issues to go along with his lack of form. He has had six separate injury or illness absences for Newcastle, with the latest one having kept him out for eight matches so far.

He missed nine games last term and it remains to be seen when he will return during the current campaign. This shows that he is now an unreliable player for Howe, both in terms of his performances on the pitch and his fitness.

It could now be time for the ex-Bournemouth boss to brutally axe Fernandez from the squad by cashing in on him at the end of the campaign. This would allow the Magpies to replace the 32-year-old ahead of the start of the 2022/23 season, with Newcastle getting rid of a player at the back end of his career.

At the time of writing (05/02/22), Transfermarkt value the Argentine at £1.8m. This is a £5.4m plummet in the space of just over three years and shows that his career may be winding down as he heads towards his mid-30s.

He is currently under contract until 2023, with an option to extend it a further 12 months, but Howe must cash in on him in the summer instead of allowing him to leave on a free transfer the following year. The end of this season could be the club’s last chance to recoup some money for the defender and, for the aforementioned reasons, they should act upon that opportunity.
