Manchester City: Blues handed Angelino injury boost with positive news

Manchester City have received a positive update on the injury incurred by Angelino in midweek.

The Spaniard was forced off during the 3-1 Carabao Cup win over Southampton, but The Sun reported that the injury is not as serious as first feared. They claimed that the 22-year-old was suffering from cramp, which was why he duly left the field.

The full-back impressed during the win, highlighting why Manchester City signed him back from PSV Eindhoven after a stellar season in the Eredivisie. As per WhoScored, he had more touches of the ball (133) than anyone else in the game and completed 88 of his 101 passes, as well as playing one key pass.

Pep Guardiola’s left-back position has been somewhat of a gaping hole since his arrival at the Etihad – with Benjamin Mendy suffering repeated injuries, the likes of Fabian Delph and Oleksandr Zinchenko have had to improvise in that position over the last couple of seasons.

In response, ahead of another close title-chase on the horizon, Guardiola triggered a buy-back clause which allowed City to re-sign Angelino from PSV for a reduced £5.3m sum.

Angelino originally departed the club in a bid to get more game-time, with the full-back’s main spells of action beforehand coming in the form of loan spells to various clubs throughout Europe, most recently with NAC Breda in 2018.

However, after an impressive season in the Eredivisie, Guardiola opted to re-sign his compatriot and slot him in as a back-up defensive option.

The Premier League champions have been plagued with a string of injury problems ahead of an imminent trip to Anfield, with Aymeric Laporte, Leroy Sane, Rodrigo and Zinchenko all on the treatment table.

With the news coming in that Angelino won’t be joining them, Guardiola can now debate whether the youngster plays the next couple of matches in a bid to rest Mendy for their trip to Liverpool.

Indeed, judging by City’s injury record in the left-back position, the fact it was just a cramp and not something more serious will likely come as a great relief to Guardiola.

Manchester City fans, how relieved are you that Angelino’s injury is not as serious as first feared? Comment below with your views!

Leeds United: Club eye January signings if they lose loan stars

Leeds United could look to sign another couple of players on loan in the January transfer window, that is according to a report from Football Insider.

[ad_pod ]

It is thought that they will look to do so if some of their current loanees are recalled by their parent clubs.

Two players who are currently on loan at Leeds could be recalled in January.

Jack Clarke could be taken back by Tottenham Hotspur after failing to make a single appearance in the Championship this season.

He was signed by Spurs in the summer but sent straight back to Elland Road on loan. However, with the club having six players on temporary deals and only being allowed to have five of them in the matchday squad, the young winger has often been left out.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are thought to be considering recalling Eddie Nketiah, who hasn’t started at all in the league. The striker has often impressed in his cameo appearances, scoring twice and providing an assist but Marcelo Bielsa has stuck with Patrick Bamford as his first choice centre-forward.

Should they lose the duo, they will look to replace them with more loan players, as per Football Insider.

Owner Andrea Radrizzani has admitted that the club cannot afford to buy players due to their high wage bill, but he will allow Bielsa to bring in a couple more loan players as they look to seal automatic promotion.

There is no doubt that Leeds could lose both Nketiah and Clarke in the January transfer window. Neither are getting the amount of game time that their parent clubs would want, and in Nketiah’s case there are other clubs who would be interested in taking him for the second half of the season including Bristol City.

If the duo do go, then the Whites will almost definitely need reinforcements in the January transfer window as they would be left with just 20 first team players and that includes youngsters Leif Davis and Jordan Stevens.

Leeds fans would almost certainly not be happy to see Nketiah leave, with many of them believing that he should be in the team ahead of the misfiring Bamford. But at this point, it is hard to see Arsenal allowing him to stay given his lack of opportunities.

Leeds fans, should Eddie Nketiah and Jack Clarke be given more first team opportunities? And who would you sign if they are recalled by their parent clubs in January? Let us know in the comments below…

Wolves’ birthday message to Kevin Doyle shows how far the club have come

[ad_pod ]It’s fair to say that Wolves have undergone a bit of a transformation over these past few years. The influence of Jorge Mendes has allowed the Midlands outfit to bring in some huge names over the past couple of years, and after their seventh-placed finish, it’s hard to remember where they were just a few years ago.The day before they embark on their Europa League journey, one of their former star players celebrated his birthday, and the club didn’t forget to wish him well.

Kevin Doyle was a bit of a cult hero at Wolves during his time at the club, and before Molineux was being treated to regular screamers from Ruben Neves, they had the honour of watching some tap-ins from Doyle.

This highlight reel shows just how far Wolves have come over the past few years. Not that Doyle wasn’t a solid player at that level, but Wolves now have a £30m striker up top rather than a man who scored just three goals in League One in his final season with the club.

Nottingham Forest fans praise John Bostock after substitute appearance

[ad_pod ]

Nottingham Forest needed heroics from Albert Adomah to salvage a point at Charlton Athletic on Wednesday night.

Lee Bowyer’s men had taken the lead through Lyle Taylor in the 18th minute after his pinpoint header beat Manchester City loanee Aro Muric in the Forest net.

It was the home side’s failure to clear their lines from a corner which allowed Adomah to slip in and nab the equaliser with a little over ten minutes left to go in the game.

Forest boss Sabri Lamouchi criticised the performance by saying his side were ‘lucky to get one point.’

Summer arrival John Bostock came on as a second-half substitute as he made his Championship debut for the club, having played a full 90 minutes against Fleetwood in the Carabao Cup – laying on an assist, and a number of fans were left praising his impact.

One supporter said he held the midfield together by controlling the play when he came on whilst a further fan added the side looked more composed when the 27-year-old was introduced.

The midfielder was once a promising prospect who had made his professional debut at the age of just 15 for Crystal Palace in 2007.

Since 2013, the Englishman has been plying his trade abroad in Belgium with Royal Antwerp, in France with Lens and most recently Toulouse and even in Turkey with Bursaspor.

This summer he made a return to England by joining the City Ground on a season-long loan from the Violets.

Another member of the Forest faithful hopes that Bostock receives a starting place soon whilst one supporter claimed he was a ‘good fit’ for the club.

Barcelona’s signing of Neymar would likely have bad repercussions for La Masia

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Le Parisien claim that Barcelona have submitted their third and final bid to bring Neymar Junior back to the Camp Nou. The Catalans already had two offers turned down but it seems they are willing to make one final attempt to capture the Brazilian.

What’s the word, then?

Two years have already passed since Neymar notoriously left the Catalan capital to seek his fortune in France. And ever since, there have been murmurs of his unhappiness in the City of Light and the ambition to return back home.

Of course, he was also constantly linked with the likes of Real Madrid, too, as he was determined to leave. But now, Barcelona seem like the only option and if the recent reports are true, the Catalans are confident a deal can be struck and the Brazilian could return very soon.

But even if we disregard the sheer financial and moral difficulties they would have to endure to make this deal happen, there’s also the sporting problem that might come back to haunt them in the not so distant future.

Burying La Masia

Barcelona have been going crazy about some of their biggest prospects coming out of La Masia this past couple of days. The 16-year-old Ansu Fati, the crown jewel of their academy has made his debut for the senior team against Real Betis at the Camp Nou as the youngster lived his dream for a short time he got to play.

And not only that but Carles Perez, the young winger who started the game and even found the net after an impressive performance was also one of the highlights of the evening. That 5-2 victory over Betis was very much a win made in La Masia. But Barcelona could be sacrificing all of it by bringing Neymar back to the club.

Of course, the Brazilian is an extremely talented footballer and one of the best in the world on his day but with an abundance of forwards already in the team and with so many big names blocking the way, it’s really difficult to see these high-potential youngsters making any progress in the near future.

For a club that seems to be putting so much emphasis on its academy, buying Neymar would surely be a step backwards and one that would slow down or even stop the development of their brilliant young players. Maybe all the reinforcements they seemingly so desperately need are already at the club and right in front of their noses.

They just have to know where to look.

Keeping Kieran Tierney is a big gamble for Celtic

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Celtic have rejected a bid from Arsenal in the region of £25m for Kieran Tierney, according to BBC Sport.

What’s the story?

Tierney has been the subject of interest throughout the summer from Arsenal and Napoli with the left-back’s future far from certain. With Arsenal upping their bid though, the Emirates certainly appears the more likely destination for the 22-year-old.

Tierney has been a key player for Celtic ever since he broke through in 2015 but has been restricted to just nine appearances this calendar year. The left-back has been dealing with hernia issues and is still some way from making a full return.

Neil Lennon has brought Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo in from Rapid Vienna in a £3m deal, yet this is no final nail in Tierney’s Celtic career. Emilio Izaguirre left Parkhead this summer, so Mbombo could just be competition for the 22-year-old Scotland international.

The indoor football skills in the video below have to be seen to be believed…

Tierney staying could hurt future deals

The issue that could arise for Lennon and the Celtic board is that turning down £25m for Tierney (potentially the highest Arsenal will go with their limited budget) might stop other promising players coming to Celtic Park in the future.

We’ve seen in the past that players from Europe come to Celtic knowing if they perform to a certain standard they will likely attract Premier League interest.

The likes of Moussa Dembele, Victor Wanyama and Virgil van Dijk are perfect examples. Those three, and Tierney too, gave so much to Celtic and in return, all were allowed to leave when their asking price was met.

Arsenal’s Tierney bid is the biggest the club has ever received and blocking the deal could put off youngsters like Wanyama, van Dijk and Dembele from coming to Celtic Park and developing.

The pathway is clear – sign for Celtic, play well in Europe and win some trophies, get your dream move to the Premier League and earn the Hoops a hefty profit in doing so.

Blocking this route could see players who view the Scottish Premiership as a stepping stone decide that a move to Scotland will not advance their careers, as it has done for so many in the past.

The club needs to be careful with this deal because it could have drastic ramifications down the line, even if keeping Tierney seems appealing in the short-term.

Liverpool fans slam Simon Mignolet following defeat to Napoli

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool continued their preparations for the 2019-20 campaign with a 3-0 defeat to Italian giants Napoli in Edinburgh on Sunday afternoon.

It was a tough game for the Reds, who improved in the second half but could not find a way past Carlo Ancelotti’s side to give their fans something to cheer.

Alisson Becker’s absence meant that there was another start for Simon Mignolet between the sticks, with the 22-time Belgium international still at the club.

In fairness, there was not much that Mignolet could have done about the first two goals.

However, he did palm the ball straight out to Amin Younes for the 25-year-old to score a third for Napoli early in the second period.

And it would be fair to say that a number of the Liverpool fans were not overly pleased with what they saw from Mignolet once again.

Indeed, a number took to social media both during and after the game in Scotland to show their disappointment.

Liverpool fans react to Jurgen Klopp comments on academy youngsters

[ad_pod ]

After a season that ended with them lifting the Champions League, the summer transfer window has been a rather low-key affair for Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have seen title rivals Manchester City sign Rodri for £62.8m, but are yet to make a real splash in the market themselves. However, as the first game of their pre-season approaches, the Reds boss has thrown his backing behind the club’s promising academy stars and urged them to make the most of their opportunities during pre-season.

The German said: “These boys are our future if they want to be our future. I’m open, I’m very open for exciting football players and if the boys show up, good for them and good for us.”

Supporters of the Merseyside club insisted that their “future was bright” and praised Klopp for trying to make the most out of their academy.

Indeed, some fans even pointed back to the success being enjoyed by youth product Trent Alexander-Arnold, and revealed their excitement at potentially seeing another star make their mark in the future.
