England tour of Pakistan in doubt as ECB reassesses security arrangements

Decision due in ’24-48 hours’ in wake of New Zealand’s abandonment of ongoing series

George Dobell17-Sep-2021The chances of England going ahead with their proposed tour to Pakistan in October would appear to have receded sharply, in the wake of New Zealand’s decision to abandon their ongoing tour due to a security threat.England’s men and women teams are currently due to play two T20Is in Rawalpindi on October 13 and 14, with the women due to stay on for a three-match ODI series as well. But, in the wake of New Zealand’s decision – minutes before the scheduled start of their first ODI in Rawalpindi – the ECB have confirmed they are reviewing their plans, with a decision expected in the next “24-48 hours”.A statement from NZC said: “Following an escalation in the New Zealand Government threat levels for Pakistan, and advice from NZC security advisors on the ground, it has been decided the BLACKCAPS will not continue with the tour.”Given that NZC and the ECB use the same security consultants – ESI Risk – to advise on such matters, it would be a major surprise if England proceeded with the tour.”We’re aware of New Zealand’s decision to pull out of the Pakistan tour due to a security alert,” an ECB spokesperson said. “We are liaising with our security team who are on the ground in Pakistan to fully understand the situation. The ECB Board will then decide in the next 24-48 hours whether our planned tour should proceed.”Related

The tour would have been a significant moment for Pakistan cricket. England have not visited the country since 2005 due to security concerns, but agreed this two-match series as a sign of gratitude at Pakistan’s assistance in helping them stage cricket during the English summer of 2020 when the nation was in lockdown. Pakistan’s players were obliged to spend an extended period of time in a bio-bubble to ensure the ECB were able to stage the series. It may be premature to cast doubt over the viability of England men’s Test tour to Pakistan in late 2022, but the resurfacing of security issues in the region is likely to have ramifications for the staging of that series as well.Any cancellation may also hit both teams’ preparations for the T20 World Cup which follows. It could be, however, that the ECB allow their IPL players to remain at the tournament during the knock-out stages. The ECB had previously intimated that players involved in the T20 World Cup would be obliged to leave the tournament early. It also leaves England’s plans for the winter up in the air. They have already seen their tour of Bangladesh cancelled and are currently waiting for assurances from Cricket Australia before confirming their Ashes plans.

Alister McDermott’s seven-wicket haul narrowly failed to earn Queensland a stunning win at the Gabba, where Western Australia chased 68 for victory and got there nine wickets down. In a thrilling finale, Ben Cutting collected the eighth and ninth wickets from consecutive balls with the Warriors still needing four to win, but the No.11 Michael Hogan picked up two from each of the next two deliveries to secure the win.Nathan Rimmington was at the other on 16 when the winning runs came, the top seven batsmen all having fallen to McDermott, whose 7 for 24 easily eclipsed his previous best first-class figures of 3 for 36. The small target started to look a bit tougher when McDermott had Liam Davis caught behind in the first over, Wes Robinson caught down leg side in the third over and Marcus North lbw in the seventh over.It left the Warriors at 3 for 23 and worse was to come when both Marsh brothers were caught pulling, Shaun for 12 and Mitchell for a duck. That gave McDermott his maiden five-wicket haul in his fifth first-class match, and he followed up with Luke Ronchi caught behind for 1 and Adam Voges, the top scorer with 18, snapped up at second slip. When Cutting chipped in with the wickets of Nathan Coulter-Nile and Michael Beer it left Queensland with a great chance to keep their unbeaten season alive, but Hogan edged two and then drove down the ground to secure the win. Remarkably, the Bulls also dropped two catches as the Warriors wobbled their way to 9 for 68, but the result was enough to push Western Australia within four points of the top-of-the-table Bulls.Earlier in the day, Queensland had lost their last six wickets for 64 runs, as Beer collected 3 for 19 and Rimmington also picked up three victims. Joe Burns top scored for Queensland with 43.

Determined Lancashire stay in title race

If anyone believed the Championship race was over after the first day of the final round of matches, their views must surely have been dispelled by day two

If anyone believed the Championship race was over after the first day of the final round of matches, their views must surely have been dispelled by day two.Had Lancashire scripted the second day of this match, it could scarcely have gone better for them. After taking the final five Somerset wickets for just 66 runs in the morning they scored at nearly four an over for much of their reply and were only slowed in the last hour as Somerset’s spinners found their line.As things stand, however, Lancashire could still win this game and fail to clinch the Championship. They could lose this game and still win the Championship. Warwickshire and even Durham remain in contention. There’s much to unfold over the next two days. That Lancashire remain in contention going into the penultimate day of the campaign speaks volumes for their resilience as a team. Many of their rivals would have lost heart after a trying first day, or lost focus amid the unfolding drama.Lancashire did neither. Their top order accumulated runs nicely without ever betraying any of the anxiety that might have caused them to falter and they go into the third day with their dream of a first outright Championship title for 77 years still alive. And they did it all without their captain, Glen Chapple, whose hamstring injury prevented him from taking the field all day.It took only a few minutes to claim another bonus point in the morning session. With just 13 balls left of the 110 overs, Kyle Hogg produced a surprisingly sharp bouncer that took the glove of Craig Meschede on its way to the keeper.Somerset’s tail folded rather meekly. James Hildreth’s excellent innings ended when he aimed a footless waft at one well outside his off stump and only succeeded in edging to slip, while the spinners made quick work of the final three batsmen for the addition of just eight runs. Gary Keedy, who might be playing his final game for Lancashire if Warwickshire are successful in luring him to Edgbaston, finished with 4 for 57 and now has 60 wickets in the Championship season. Somerset’s final total – 380 – looked someway below par on this pitch. That thought was soon underlined as Lancashire’s openers started brightly in reply. Paul Horton, driving beautifully, raced to 50 and passed 1,000 first-class runs this season – though without a century – while Stephen Moore played the anchor role and helped post an opening stand of 104.Though Horton’s pleasing innings ended when he edged an attempted cut and Moore pulled a filthy long-hop to deep midwicket, Karl Brown also timed the ball sweetly in becoming the third Lancashire batsman to record a half-century. He and Moore added another 102 for the second wicket.Somerset, meanwhile, were not quite at their best. While Steve Kirby and Alfonso Thomas both bowled decently, Geemal Hussain looked so out of his depth it was tempting to throw him a rubber ring. When he didn’t drift down the leg side, he bowled too short and his record since arriving at Taunton – 20 Championship wickets at 47 apiece – represents a major fall to earth after his success with Gloucestershire.Murali Kartik also struggled. Reduced to bowling in the rough outside the right-handers’ leg stump in an attempt to frustrate the batsmen, he also delivered five no-balls – though one was for allowing a third fielder to slip behind square on the leg side – and afterwards commented, while rolling his eyes: “To say it’s a flat pitch is an understatement. It’s an old school Taunton wicket.” He could, at least, take some satisfaction with the wicket of Brown, who prodded forward and edged one that turned and left him.Somerset also missed Charl Willoughby. The 36-year-old left-arm seamer is Somerset’s leading wicket-taker in first-class cricket this season with 53 victims but he was left out after it was concluded he lacked penetration with the new ball. He has one year remaining on his contract at Taunton but it seems that he may well be on the move. Essex could well be his new home.Meanwhile both Kartik and Brown could find themselves in some trouble with the ECB. Kartik was reported by the umpires after an incident where Horton played the ball back to Kartik who, in attempting to threw down the stumps, threw the ball very close to Horton’s head. It surely wasn’t intentional, but it didn’t look pretty.Brown was called in to see the umpires after appearing to question whether his edge to Trego had carried. To be fair, he appeared to be asking for clarification rather than showing dissent.”We’ve given ourselves a chance of winning it,” Moore said. “We can’t control what’s going on elsewhere, so all we’re aiming to do is focus on our own cricket. Our target was to bowl them out for under 400. It’s obviously a good pitch and you can score quickly here, so we’re in a very good position.”Indeed they are. Their first priority on day three is simply to claim maximum batting bonus points (for 400 runs within 110 overs), though they could decide to accumulate a vast first innings total and bat just once in the match. While the pitch might be expected to turn a little more as the match progresses, however, it’s worth noting that Somerset chased down 228 in 40 overs without losing a wicket here against Yorkshire earlier in the Championship season. Anything is still possible in this absorbing title race.

Dhoni faces up to huge challenge

Trying to come back from being 2-0 down in the series presents MS Dhoni with his toughest challenge as captain

Nagraj Gollapudi at Trent Bridge01-Aug-2011For the second successive Monday, England emerged the superior side. The more happy unit. The more confident team. India, the world’s No. 1 Test side, were never able to entirely dominate on any of the nine playing days. In his three-year stint as Indian captain MS Dhoni has never lost two Tests in a row, nor have India lost a Test series. But now, Andrew Strauss’s men are not only threatening to win the Pataudi Trophy, but also are marching towards the title of the best Test team in the world. On evidence at Lord’s and in these four days at Trent Bridge, Her Majesty’s men might just be able to snatch the crown from India. As they have done over the past two years, England played like a domineering team. The depth in their batting, which Dhoni said he was envious about, plucked them out of a precarious position on the first day at Trent Bridge after they slipped to 124 for 8. The local boy Stuart Broad hit a steely half-century to guide England to a more respectable 221, 97 runs which “really mattered,” according to Dhoni. On the second afternoon, Broad restricted India’s lead to 67 with a fierce spell of seam bowling that included a hat-trick.India needed quick wickets on the third day to keep alive the hope of levelling the series, but one by one, the England batsmen, toyed with the bowling. The Indian attack was down to three specialists as Harbhajan Singh bowled only 13.4 overs in the match due to a stomach muscle injury.”I didn’t have any tricks left,” Dhoni said after the 319-run defeat. “I tried everything I had left. They bat quite deep, [James] Anderson is the only one who doesn’t bat to some extent. They were eight down for 120 and were able to score 100 more runs (in the first innings). The bowlers tried what they could. We were not really successful and that happens in cricket.”Dhoni said he couldn’t blame his bowling attack, especially the new-ball pair of Ishant Sharma and Praveen Kumar, who have now played five Tests since June 20. “Our bowlers were a bit tired. That was one of the reasons. Their batsmen played some big shots. Their mis-hits landed in between the fielders. The bowlers tried everything but nothing really went our way.”But the biggest concern for India is the failure of their esteemed batting order to construct big totals. In the last five Tests, India have crossed 300 only once, at Roseau in the third Test against West Indies. In England, their highest so far has been 288.MS Dhoni’s advice: “Have belief in yourself and the team, in what you do”•Getty ImagesThe most damning stat is the performance of the Indian lower order (last five batsmen) as compared to their English counterparts. The England lower order comprising Matt Prior, Tim Bresnan, Graeme Swann, Broad and Anderson faced 710 deliveries and lasted 1059 minutes over the two Tests, while the Indians could barely survive 356 balls spanning 487 minutes.”It’s important to put runs on the board and we are slightly lacking that. Right from the last series we played, we haven’t scored consistently so that’s also a bit of a concern,” Dhoni said. “One of the big areas of concern is the lower-order; we haven’t been able to see the second new ball through. Hopefully it will get better and we won’t be exposed to the new ball.”Adding to India’s batting problems was the fact the neither Suresh Raina nor Yuvraj Singh could respond convincingly to the short-ball strategy emplyed by the England fast bowlers. Both men had hit fighting half-centuries (Raina in the second innings at Lord’s and Yuvraj in the first innings at Trent Bridge) but today they succumbed cheaply to short-pitched deliveries.Dhoni, though, backed his batsmen and their technique against bouncers. “That’s often said to us but there have been games when we’ve done well in Perth, Durban and Barbados. We will get caught out once in a while but most of the batsmen are used to the short-pitched stuff.”A lot was written about India’s determination and their ability to bounce back after starting poorly in a series. Coming back from 2-0 down, could be the biggest test of Dhoni’s captaincy. And for Duncan Fletcher, who is barely two months into the India coaching job. “We are very confident in the talent in the dressing room and we’ll make the most of the next 10 days,” Dhoni said. He will have some reinforcements for the third Test: Gautam Gambhir is certain to play, while Zaheer Khan and Virender Sehwag could also return.Dhoni said India needed to remain mentally tough in the nine-day break before the Edgbaston Test. “When you play at the top level you face tough situations and this is one of those. And that is what you are supposed to do: have belief in yourself and the team, in what you do. We will definitely make it tough (for England).”

Clinical Kuwait stay at top of table

Kuwait consolidated their position at the top of the World Cricket League Division 7 points table, beating Nigeria convincingly by nine wickets with all of 25 overs to spare at the Lobatse Cricket Ground.Being asked to bat, Nigeria’s line-up crumbled against the medium pace of Saad Khalid. The slide was initiated by left-armer Mohammad Murad, who sent back opener Ramit Gill for a duck. From there on, Khalid, with the rest of the bowlers offering solid support, ran through Nigeria, finishing with figures of 5 for 24 in 6.4 overs. The only batsman to show any resistance was Sean Philips, who contributed almost half the total with 75, as Nigeria folded for 153. Kuwait were clinical in the chase, Irfan Bhatti and Saud Qamar putting together an unbroken 128-run stand after an early wicket, to take their side home comfortably.Khalid, who was named Man of the Match said his side will look to continue their winning run. “It is obviously great to make it three wins out of three in the tournament, but we can’t rest on today’s win,” he said. “We face Germany tomorrow [Thursday] and we know they’ll want a good match, especially since they lost to us in the final of Division 8 [Kuwait and Germany finished on top in Division 8, to qualify for the Division 7 tournament].”Hosts Botswana got past Germany by two wickets in a close game at the Botswana Cricket Association Oval 1 in Gaborone.Botswana began ideally in the field, after captain Akrum Chand chose to bowl, with Waseem Tajbhay running out Milan Fernando for a duck and Omar Ali castling Andre Leslie for 1, to leave Germany 2 for 2 in the third over. A patient 148-run stand between Asif Khan and Farooq Ahmed got the innings back on track though. The pair was dismissed in quick succession, but Rishi Pillai added another 47, to make sure Germany posted a competitive total. Ali was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with 3 for 43. Botswana, like Germany, were in trouble early on in their innings, being 8 for 2 and then 28 for 3, before a steadying 87-run stand between Denzil Sequeira and Karabo Modise. Modise, was run out on 65, but the lower-middle order played around Ali – who struck 45 off 40 balls – to help the hosts sneak home with 11 deliveries to spare.Man-of-the-Match Ali said the win was the result of positive cricket. “When I saw Karabo going out there and playing with a positive attitude, I decided that when I went out there [to bat] I would go with the same attitude and it paid off.”Norway registered their first win of the tournament, defeating Japan by 53 runs at the Botswana Cricket Association Oval 2, on the back of an excellent all-round performance by Shahbaz Butt.Japan inserted Norway in to bat, and were able to pick up wickets at regular intervals to begin with, leaving Norway 81 for 5 in the 22nd over. That’s when they came up against Butt, who put on 125 runs for the sixth wicket with Iftikhar Suhael. Patrick Giles-Jones, who finished with 4 for 48, took a return catch to get rid of Suhael for 53, but Butt carried on, steering Norway towards sizeable total before falling two short of his century. He continued to trouble Japan during the chase, running through their middle order with his maiden hat-trick. While a few of the Japan batsman got starts, only Ko Irie managed to build an innings of substance, remaining 56 not out as Japan folded for 191 in the 49th over.”I just knew I had to stay in there and make the runs for as long as possible and stay in the game for as long as possible which I did,” Man-of-the-Match Shahbaz said. “I was also really happy with the way I bowled. That’s not to say Japan didn’t challenge us today, they put up a good fight with both bat and ball but ultimately we came out on top.”

Guptill aims to tough it out to revive New Zealand

Nagraj Gollapudi01-Mar-2011Martin Guptill believes he can solve New Zealand’s top-order woes if he can recall the belief that helped him to a gritty century against Ireland in the warm-up match in Nagpur. Though Guptill did not need to break sweat in the massive drubbing of Kenya in New Zealand’s tournament opener, he fell cheaply against Shane Watson as the batting crumbled against Australia having struggled to 10 off 25 balls. His inability to force the pace encouraged Australia’s quick bowlers to cramp him for space with a tight line. It was not just him, though, as his partners forgot to rotate the strike as New Zealand ran only four singles in the first 15 overs. It was an appalling display and New Zealand were rightly thrashed by seven wickets, making the match, a marquee encounter on paper, a no-contest and at the same time conceded the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy.”It is just a matter of me being tough,” Guptill said about his own performance. “Just making myself kick on and go deep into the innings. I did it against Ireland so there is no reason I can’t do it against other nations. So I am looking to go back to what I did against Ireland and hopefully it works for me.”Guptill, who was New Zealand’s best batsman in the recent two-Test series against Pakistan, said that seven-day break between the two matches, will allow New Zealand to start afresh against Zimbabwe on Friday. The captain Daniel Vettori has an ongoing hamstring problem and is one of three players along with Scott Stryis (finger) and Kyle Mills (back) with injury issues but Guptill indicated they will all be fit. “We need to win here. The guys are working towards it. So we want to put up good performances,” he said.Guptill is well aware about Zimbabwe’s strengths, one of which is their reliance on their spinners, who have bowled virtually 40 overs in each of the previous contests against Australia and Canada. To combat the dangers of the slow bowlers, Guptill said the batsmen were training against the spin pair of Vettori and Nathan McCullum bowling with the new ball. He also has first-hand experience of facing spin early in an innings after facing R Ashwin during the warm-up match against India although Guptill didn’t last long against the offspinner.Guptill felt there was nothing wrong with his batting, instead it was just a matter of staying strong. He said that John Wright, the coach, and an opener during his playing career, had been a positive influence. “He hasn’t done too much technical work with me,” he said. “It is just a matter of him saying to believe myself and go out and do it really. I have been doing it reasonably well but I just go to do it for longer periods and that is what I am looking forward to do this week.”

Naved's seven gives SBP title

State Bank of Pakistan won the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy Division Two after Mohammad Naved’s seven wickets helped them bowl Khan Research Laboratories out for 159 and give them the first-innings lead in the final

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Jan-2011Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsState Bank of Pakistan finally won the Quaid-e-Azam Division Two final after what turned out to be a seven-day match against Khan Research Laboratories at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. There were only four days of play, though; that too two days were curtailed, and SBP ended up with a 144-run first-innings lead, and with it the victory. After there was no play on Wednesday due to the murder of the Punjab governor, KRL resumed their innings at 74 for 2 in response to SBP’s 303. They did not last long on the seventh-day pitch, losing their last eight wickets for 85 runs in 30.3 overs on Thursday. Fast bowler Mohammad Naved did all the damage for SBP, finishing with 7 for 61. He got an early wicket, dismissing overnight batsman, KRL captain Mohammad Wasim, before he could add to his score of 8.Opener Ali Naqvi battled at one end to reach a half-century, but Naved kept picking away at the wickets at the other. Only three of KRL’s last eight batsman got to double figures.SBP had scored most of their runs on the third day after little play was possible on the first two. The fourth day was also washed out. The rules of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy state the final must go on till the first innings of both sides are complete, which is why the game was extended into a seventh day.
