Everton fans on Twitter pine for Gylfi Sigurdsson strike to win Goal of the Season

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Everton fans on Twitter think there’s only one winner when it comes to picking the club’s Goal of the Season sponsored by Money Corp.

A Tweet from the club’s official account on the social media platform containing a video of the contenders was flooded with replies calling for Gylfi Sigurdsson’s strike at Leicester City in the Premier League to pick up the accolade.

The Icelandic international found himself with the ball in midfield during the 1-2 win for the Toffees at the King Power Stadium back in October, and turned past James Maddison before burying the ball in the top corner from ridiculous range.

Other front-runners for the prize included Lucas Digne’s precision hits at home to Watford and away at Burnley, Andre Gomes’ Wolverhampton Wanderers thunderbolt and Richarlison’s neat finish against the same opponent on the opening day of the campaign.

However, the majority of supporters were only interested in one strike collecting the crown, that of Sirgudsson with one even proclaiming that it’s “not worth debating.”

Check out a selection of the best Tweets pining for the 29-year-old’s Foxes screamer, below…

Leeds United: Bielsa too smart to fall for Wilder’s mind games

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder heaped praise on his Leeds counterpart Marcelo Bielsa, when he insisted the Argentine had “sprinkled his magic dust” on the team he considers as “the best team in the division”.

He was speaking ahead of the top of the table clash at Elland Road on Saturday lunchtime, in a game that could have huge connotations on the automatic promotion race.

According to the BBC Sport website, Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield: ” The manager [Bielsa] has worked at the highest level and they’ve gone all out to get him to turn their club around.

“He’s sprinkled his magic dust and they’ve got a good group of players.”

Bielsa, who could see his Leeds side open up a five point gap between themselves and their third-placed opponents with a win tomorrow, was mutually respectful of his opposite number.

He said: “I have learned a lot from Sheffield United, they are the one of the teams from which I have learned the most this season.

“They have a new style of playing and they have been faithful to that all season, each player is giving the best of themselves.

“When we played against them [earlier in the season] it was a hard win and probably we didn’t deserve to win. It’s a big challenge to try and beat them.”

But Wilder stressed that, although it is undoubtedly a huge game, it will not make or break the season for either club, following social media comments from Leeds defender Pontus Jansson who said that it would be “the biggest game of our lives” for many of the players.

Reacting to the comments, the Blades boss said: “I respect what he has to say as an international footballer and it gives a big boost to whoever gets the result but it’s not season-defining.

“I think that shows a total lack of respect for the teams we’ve got left to play. If we won it would claw back the deficit that we are in behind them and if they win then they stretch that lead.

“The way the Championship is at the moment all of the teams have got something to play for.”

It promises to be a great atmosphere between the Yorkshire rivals, and regardless of Wilder’s comments, a win for Leeds would surely see them in a virtually unstoppable position with just eight games to go.

Aston Villa Injury News: Tommy Elphick set to be out for 4-5 weeks

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith’s worst fears have been confirmed after it was revealed via the club’s official website that key centre-back Tommy Elphick will be out for “four or five weeks” with a heel injury.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Midlands outfit don’t have a plethora of centre-back options anyway, and it didn’t look good when the 31-year-old was substituted off during the second half of the 4-0 win against Derby County at Villa Park on Saturday.

Now the former Bournemouth man will definitely miss the second city derby against Birmingham City at St Andrew’s on Sunday after suffering a small tear, and may not be back in action until mid-April if the prognosis is correct.

The fact that the experienced defender has gone from being out in the cold and being sent out on loan to Hull City to becoming a key first-team player tells you all you need to know about Villa’s situation at the back.

Who could fill in?

With James Chester still recovering from a knee injury, Smith has some big decisions to make before the clash against the Blues this weekend.

Who do you want to see promoted this year? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have picked their 3 favoured teams in the video below…

Tyrone Mings looks to be a guaranteed starter following some impressive displays in recent weeks, but he could be partnered by any of Kortney Hause, Mile Jedinak or even Neil Taylor, who should be back after illness.

Six points adrift of the play-offs and two behind Birmingham this is a crucial period for the Villans, but they will have to get through the majority of it without a leader in Elphick.

Birmingham Injury News: Colin injury gives Harding chance to avenge Villa Park pain

[ad_pod ]

Birmingham City manager Garry Monk confirmed on Thursday that right-back Maxime Colin will miss the second city derby against Aston Villa at St Andrew’s on Sunday with a hamstring injury, and it gives Wes Harding a chance to avenge his Villa Park pain.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Monk announced via the official club website that the Frenchman will be missing for the visit of the Blues’ arch-rivals at the weekend, and it will be a big loss seeing as the boss said he considers the 27-year-old to be “one of the best full-backs in the league”.

Given Brum don’t have a huge squad or plethora of options to choose from it seems highly likely that Harding will step in at right-back, as he has done countless times over the past couple of months.

The 40-year-old City chief is confident that the 22-year-old can step up to the plate against Dean Smith’s men, telling bcfc.co.uk: “I have got no fears about any of the players, they have all shown they can contribute and they are all ready to go.”

That said, the 5ft 11in man will surely be looking to avenge the Villa Park nightmare he encountered during his side’s 4-2 defeat back in November.

Reaction time

While Harding has shown no signs of being affected by it, there is no doubt that his display in the reverse fixture wasn’t great.

Firstly he was asked to play in an unfamiliar left-back role, and he was torn apart by Albert Adomah time and time again – weirdly enough despite featuring on the opposite flank this weekend, he will likely come up against the same opponent.

His below-par display culminated in a late yellow card for a poor challenge on the Ghana international, and he will surely want to make up for it against their local neighbours at St Andrew’s on Sunday.

Arsenal: Club target Matty Longstaff in next step of Mikel Arteta’s master plan

According to TEAMtalk, Arsenal are targeting Matty Longstaff in what would be the next step of Mikel Arteta’s plan.

The reports claim that the north London club lead the way to sign the central midfield player but face competition from the likes of Everton, West Ham United, Borussia Dortmund, Ajax, Club Brugge, Inter Milan and Atalanta.

Longstaff is out of contract in June and would rather leave the Magpies than sign a new one, according to the article. As a result, the Gunners are the reported front-runners and signing the 20-year old could be a positive step in Arteta’s plan of building a more youthful team to hopefully dominate in the future.

The Spanish coach has turned to youth in his short spell not just as Arsenal manager but in his managerial career overall. The likes of Bukayo Saka, Matteo Guendouzi, Joe Willock, Gabriel Martinelli, Reiss Nelson and Eddie Nketiah have all enjoyed a fair number of appearances under the Spaniard, with the latter having his loan spell at Leeds United cut short to help the senior team out and the 20-year old has kept £54-million rated Alexandre Lacazette out of the starting eleven in recent games (via Transfermarkt).

The youngsters mentioned above have made 57 appearances between them in all competitions for the north London club under Arteta, scoring seven goals and providing a further six assists according to Transfermarkt.

Longstaff may be a decent addition to the Gunners midfield having been capped twice at England U-20 level and playing seven times in the Premier League this season, scoring two goals (via Transfermarkt).

Indeed, the central midfield department has arguably been a problem area for the Gunners given that Granit Xhaka was stripped of the captaincy in November (via BBC) and Lucas Torreira has not always started in this campaign, coming off the bench twelve times in all competitions (via Transfermarkt).

With that in mind, Longstaff could prove to be another handy youngster to have in Arteta’s armoury as he looks to build for the future, with the likes of Graeme Souness praising his ability to strike the ball, as well as Jamie Redknapp purring over how ‘tenacious’ he can be.

Arsenal fans, would Longstaff get into your starting eleven? Comment below!

Southampton interested in signing Newcastle & West Ham target Omar Colley

According to Goal, Southampton are interested in signing Sampdoria centre-back Omar Colley, who is also on the radar of fellow Premier League sides Newcastle and West Ham.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the 12-cap Gambia international is believed to be keen on a move to the Premier League despite his side’s battle against relegation to Serie B – Sampdoria currently sit just two points above the bottom three in Serie A.

The Italian side would reportedly prefer to keep hold of Colley in January as another centre-back of theirs, Alex Ferrari, has suffered a serious knee injury.

However, Sampdoria risk losing Colley for £15m according to Goal.

The Serie A side are also keen to find a replacement before sanctioning any departure for their No.15.

Colley recently managed to help his side record a clean sheet against AC Milan and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and expressed his happiness at shutting out the iconic Swede when saying: “We had three or four chances to score the winning goal. We are happy anyway, we made a point at San Siro against Milan, we prevented Ibrahimovic from scoring. We start 2020 in the best way”.

Not much better than what Southampton have

While it is a decent achievement to keep a player of Ibrahimovic’s quality quiet, it doesn’t appear as if Colley is any better than what Southampton have in the centre-back department if you judged him statistically.

The Zambian defender has averaged a WhoScored rating of 6.72, which is slightly below Jack Stephens’ rating of 6.8 – while Jan Bednarek admittedly has an inferior rating to Colley with 6.64, he is four years younger. It must also be noted that Stephens is two years younger than the 27-year-old Sampdoria man.

Additionally, Stephens and Bednarek both average more tackles per game in the Premier League than Colley does in Serie A, registering 2 and 2.1 respectively whereas the Saints transfer target only averages 1.3 tackles.

Furthermore, Colley also commits more fouls than the Southampton duo, upending the opposition 1.4 times per game in Italy’s top-flight while Stephens and Bednarek only commit 0.4 and 1 foul respectively.

Given the fact that Sampdoria want £15m, and also want to find a replacement first, it doesn’t seem as if Colley would be worth the fight with Newcastle and West Ham for Southampton if these numbers are anything to go by.

Yes to Davis, but Rangers must also seek to land Southampton’s Matt Targett in January

According to a recent report from The Scottish Sun, Steven Davis could be set for a move away come the New Year. The midfielder currently plays his football at Premier League outfit Southampton and has done so since leaving Rangers back in 2012, although a lack of regular game time this term has plunged his future at St Mary’s into huge doubt.

And reports suggest that new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl will allow the 33-year-old to leave the South Coast outfit in the January transfer window, with Steven Gerrard’s Rangers reportedly keen on luring the Northern Ireland international back to Ibrox.

And while a reunion with Davis would certainly bolster the Gers’ ranks, Gerrard must also seek to lure his Southampton teammate Matt Targett to the Light Blues in a bid to improve his flagging left back department.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, Gerrard’s side have given themselves a chance of winning the Scottish Premiership title heading into the second half of the season, although recent disappointments in losing at home to Aberdeen and drawing at bottom side Dundee suggests that they could do with some additions in the January window.

And 33-year-old Davis, who won three Scottish league titles with Rangers during his time at the club between 2008 and 2012, would no doubt add a huge amount to Gerrard’s midfield ranks, be it a bit more creativity as well as a vast amount of experience at the top level.

But it’s also clear that the club are in need of further reinforcements at left back, what with summer signing Borna Barisic the only natural left back at Ibrox, alongside the fact that he has spent the last few months on the sidelines.

And while midfielder Andy Halliday has done well deputising for the Croatia international, it’s a weakness that is only likely to get exploited as the season wears on – clearly, another accomplished option is needed in that area of the field.

And they should look no further than Southampton’s Targett, who has found regular first team football hard to come by at St Mary’s this term behind England international Ryan Bertrand.

The 23-year-old, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Fulham, has appeared just five times in the Premier League for the Saints so far this term to underline his lowly position in the pecking order, albeit three of those appearances have come in their last four matches.

Yes, opportunities may be even more forthcoming during the busy Christmas period, but overall one would expect former Chelsea ace Bertrand to regain his place as the number left back as the season wears on – yet at the age of 23, Targett is in need of regular football himself.

And that is why a move to Rangers makes sense for all parties involved – Gerrard’s side clearly need to strengthen that area of the pitch, while Targett clearly needs the regular football he may not get at Southampton.

Thus, while the Gers must seek to lure Davis to Ibrox, they must also try and lure his Saints teammate Targett to the club in the New Year.

Manchester United fans fume at Sanchez showing vs Watford

Loads of Manchester United fans have been giving their verdict on the 2-1 win at Watford, and they’re furious with the performance of Alexis Sanchez.

[ad_pod ]

When Manchester United secured the signing of Sanchez with their city rivals sniffing around, fans thought the tide was turning again in Manchester.

The Chilean’s arrival has been a total disaster though, scoring just twice in the Premier League for his new side.

Jose Mourinho’s side were dominant against Watford on Saturday evening, winning 2-1 courtesy of goals from Romelu Lukaku and Chris Smalling.

While the performance was mostly very good, fans aren’t happy with Sanchez, who managed just one shot, one key pass and one tackle.

The 29 year-old was absolutely unplayable at times for Arsenal, so the fact that he is not influencing games more is a huge concern.
