Man United in bid to sign Ousmane Dembele

Manchester United have submitted an offer for Barcelona’s 24-year-old French winger Ousmane Dembele.

What’s the word?

That is according to reports in Spain, via The Mirror, who claim that the Red Devils have offered the Blaugrana’s No.7 a contract worth €8.4m-€12.6m (£7m-£10.6m).

United have been able to approach the player directly, with his contract expiring this summer.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-man-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-more-nunez-ten-hag-nkunku-richarlison” title=”Read the latest Man United news!”]

With Xavi reported to reject the chance to sign Adama Traore permanently, it has been reported by Marca that the Barcelona coach will prioritise the re-signing of Dembele, who was signed for £135.5m.

A big risk

Since his move from Borussia Dortmund to Barcelona, Dembele has not lived up to hype that arrived with his inflated transfer fee.

In what is now his fifth season for Barca, Dembele has managed to turn a corner under Xavi and has registered 11 assists in 18 appearances. The arrival of Traore, signed on loan, seemed to provide an element of competition that has seen the 24-year-old raise his game at Camp Nou.

Though, having been with the Catalan side since 2017, he may well fancy a change of scenery.

His form this season is enough to understand why Manchester United would be willing to take on his huge wages, with Ten Hag’s possession-based system suiting him nicely.

The £287k-per week player who has been dubbed a “phenomenon” by former teammate Lionel Messi, poses a constant threat up top and it is no wonder why he has achieved 11 assists in just 18 appearances in La Liga this season.

Barca president Joan Laporta has described the forward as “better than Mbappe”, and with a match average of 5.23 shot-creating actions, he is indeed better in this metric than the PSG star who registers an average of 4.64 shot-creating actions per 90.

Whilst Man United have not exactly struggled to create chances this season, there is still a lot of room for improvement compared to the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City. United have created 64 big chances this season, whilst Liverpool have created 93.

Dembele’s threat in the opponent’s final third and penalty area would help to bridge the gap between the two sides, with his match average of 48.71 touches in the attacking third and average of 6.65 touches in the attacking penalty area much higher than the likes of Jadon Sancho who has started to find his feet at Old Trafford.

The wages of Dembele would present a risk, though a player of his potential who still has so much to give would appeal to Ten Hag and Rangnick.

Research is key to UDRS, says ball-tracking producer

MS Dhoni’s doubts about the Umpire Decision Referral System (UDRS) could be eased were he to take up an offer by the head of the Virtual Eye ball-tracker, and understand the technology now in use in international cricket. One of three mandatory requirements for the UDRS, the ball-tracker is the most contentious component, and Ian Taylor, CEO of Virtual Eye – in use for the current Australian season – told ESPNcricinfo last week that he wanted the technology shared with people it would affect. “We need to spend time with umpires and players, captains of teams, so that we can open up the entire Pandora’s box of the technology,” Taylor said. “I think people are right to question the technology, that is how we make it better.”Hawk-Eye and Virtual Eye, cricket’s two main ball-tracker cameras, use slightly different technology. Hawk-Eye uses vector graphics for projectile mapping like the kind used in missile technology. Paul Hawkins, managing director of Hawk-Eye Innovations, has also extended an offer to the Indian team to explain the technology. “I think it is mainly whether the Indian team has confidence in the technology,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “If the Indian players take some time to understand the system fully … those concerns would go away.”Virtual Eye, which was experimented with for the first time during India’s tour of Sri Lanka in 2008, uses fibre-optic cable leading to cameras producing higher frame rates per second. “This, they tell us, will add to the accuracy of the ball-tracking,” said Brad McNamara, executive producer of cricket at Channel 9, which will be using Virtual Eye for the first time in the upcoming Ashes.During the Ashes, Taylor said, four cameras would track balls at 160 frames a second, providing points of reference available to the third umpire to make a decision. When Virtual Eye ventured into ball-tracking cricket in 2006, the cameras they used operated at 110 frames a second, which at the time were suitable for television. The advent of the DRS and the use of the “predictive path”, Taylor said, meant that, “we have had to find way to up the game.”The DRS has suddenly increased the heat on the game’s graphics providers. “It was fine when we were just delivering for television, but the advent of the DRS and the use of the predictive path has meant we have had to find ways to up the game,” Taylor said. “The computer must now work out, like the umpire, where the ball would have gone had it not hit the pad. The more frames, or points of reference we can give it to do that – the better the prediction.”It takes 40 centimetres of camera track (15 inches or less than half a yard on a cricket pitch), at 100 frames a second to give the computer two points of reference. “The computer is making its best estimate as to where the ball will go after bouncing depending on the information it receives via the frames per second,” Taylor said. Increasing the frames per second thus increases the number of points available and while cameras that can work at 1000 frames a second are available, they are extremely expensive. “We are looking for a cost effective way of lifting the frame rate. That’s where the R&D has to go now.”Taylor shares players concerns, saying, “We may have a little more knowledge from a technical perspective but that is totally balanced out by the players’, and umpires’, practical knowledge of what happens out there on the pitch in real life.”

Everton: Pickford stole the show v Man Utd

Everton claimed a huge victory from their Saturday afternoon clash against Manchester United at Goodison Park, with the Merseyside club in a rollercoaster relegation battle this season.

Frank Lampard’s Toffees took all three points to record their eighth league win of the season, leaving Ralf Rangnick and his side stunned whilst bolstering their challenge to maintain their Premier League status ahead of their remaining seven Premier League fixtures.

Despite having less possession of the ball, fewer shots on target and fewer accurate passes over the course of the game, Everton were able to keep United busy with outstanding defensive play, winning more interceptions and tackles and making 35 clearances, ultimately snatching the win with a goal scored in the first half.

Anthony Gordon’s shot deflected off Harry Maguire into the back of the net behind David de Gea to give Everton the lead over their Mancunian visitors in the 27th minute, and they were able to keep a clean sheet over the rest of the game thanks to an outstanding performance for England number one Jordan Pickford.

According to SofaScore, the Toffees goalkeeper – who was hailed as “resilient” by Theo Walcott – was the highest-rated player on the pitch (8.0) today after putting in an important shift for his team. He won 100% of his duels, made four saves, two punches and two clearances and had more touches than Ben Godfrey during the match, proving that his presence played a huge part in the result.

The goalkeeper’s flawless display may have just saved Lampard’s job, as it was revealed earlier today by Football Insider that a source close to Everton had told them the club were plotting to sack the former Chelsea boss should he have lost against United in the early kick-off. However, with three points added to their tally, his job is surely safe for the time being.

The Toffees will need to keep the momentum going, and Lampard must keep the confidence and winning mentality in his team that we saw this afternoon as their upcoming fixtures do not favour them, with Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal all ahead of them before the season finishes.

Hopes predicts tough England test

James Hopes expects a more aggressive England to turn out in the one-day series starting on Tuesday than the one that was swept aside last year

James Hopes knows Australia will have to improve on their performance against Ireland•AFP

James Hopes expects a more aggressive England to turn out in the one-day series starting on Tuesday than the one that was swept aside last year. Australia, who relied on Hopes to escape defeat against Ireland on Thursday, breezed to a 6-1 victory in 2009, but lost the World Twenty20 final to England in the Caribbean in May.The allrounder Hopes said England’s new-look team would be a threat in home conditions, starting with the opening game at the Rose Bowl. “I’m sure they’re backing themselves to beat us,” Hopes said after the 39-run win in Dublin.”If you add Kevin Pietersen back into their team – he wasn’t there last year – I think they are going to be naturally more aggressive. We’re going to have to get better because if we bowl like we did at the start and the English team get into a position like the Irish team did, they probably would have put us away.”Ireland’s openers raced to 80 in 11 overs in their chase of 232 before Hopes stepped in to take 5 for 14 off nine to secure a victory that prevented an embarrassing result. Everyone but Hopes was rusty after a layoff and the side now heads to Lord’s to play Middlesex in their final warm-up before the England series.”It was good to play the Irish because they are a pretty good team,” Hopes said. “We have another practice match on Saturday and we know a five-match series against England is going to be different to the seven-match series we played last year when we beat them 6-1.”The performance of the Ireland team impressed Hopes and he expects more improvement if they can get regular games against the world’s best sides. “Every time they play a Full Member country, they’re not disgracing themselves,” he said. “They’re putting on a good show and giving teams a good run.”

Aston Villa: Fans react to Coutinho image

Aston Villa fan feed Villa Report has shared an image of new signing Philippe Coutinho seemingly on his way to Birmingham.

The screenshot, taken from the Instagram story of the 29-year-old’s wife Ainee, shows the player on the flight to England.

Villa announced on Friday that they had agreed a deal with Barcelona to take the Brazil international on loan until the end of the season. In the summer, they will then have an option, rather than an obligation, to buy him for a fee of £33m.

The excitement around Coutinho

This will be Coutinho’s second spell in English football after his earlier stint at Liverpool. The Brazilian scored 54 goals and provided 45 assists in 201 appearances across five years at Anfield.

His last loan move, which took him to Bundesliga outfit Bayern Munich in 2019/20, saw him win the Champions League.

Furthermore, Coutinho has previously been named in the PFA Team of the Year, the World Cup Fan Dream Team and the Europa League Squad of the Season, while Barcelona spent a cool £142m to bring him to La Liga four years ago, so that illustrates the stature of player that Villa are getting.

Here’s how some fans reacted to the image of the 29-year-old making his way back to England.

Tottenham could sign Chelsea ace Lukaku

An agent has claimed that Romelu Lukaku could now sign for Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Bust-up

The news of the bust-up between Lukaku and Thomas Tuchel over an interview that the former did claiming that he was unhappy at Stamford Bridge has been widely reported, and the German manager decided to drop him for their 2-2 draw at home to Liverpool in the Premier League because of it.

Of course, reports of unrest between the player and the club are always going to conjure up rumours of him potentially leaving this month, as the Blues may now look to cash in on the striker that they paid a whopping £103.5m to sign from Inter Milan in the summer.

The Latest: Conte reunion?

Speaking to Stadio Aperto (via TUTTOmercatoWEB), when football agent Giovanni Bia was asked if Lukaku could leave Chelsea, he claimed:

“It seems clear to me, this hustle and bustle is aimed at returning to his old coach Antonio Conte. But maybe I’m wrong…”

The Verdict: Get it done

If Conte continues to play his preferred 3-5-2 system at Spurs, like he did at Inter with Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez up top, then Lukaku would be a perfect fit alongside either Harry Kane or Son Heung-Min.

The Belgium international quite simply shone under him, scoring no fewer than 64 goals and making a further 21 assists in just 95 games in total over all competitions across two seasons at the San Siro (Transfermarkt).

Lukaku is ‘world-class’ on his day, as Tuchel has pointed out, and when he is in the mood, the striker can really bully defenders, as Alan Shearer has explained previously.

Nonetheless, reuniting the 28-year-old with Conte would be a match made in heaven, but it would all depend on how big of a hit the Blues are willing to take given the fallout from his explosive comments.

Sky Sports make Ighalo to Newcastle claim

According to Sky Sports, a fresh transfer claim has come to light involving Newcastle United and Odion Ighalo.

The Lowdown: Newcastle set for January moves?

Ahead of what looks likely to be a long and arduous relegation battle for Eddie Howe’s side, the Magpies and their new owners PIF have been linked with a plethora of January swoops to boost their chances of Premier League survival.

The likes of Ousmane Dembele and Kieran Trippier have been mentioned in recent weeks, with the Magpies aiming to maintain their top-flight status and kickstart a new era on Tyneside.

It appears that some players are even keen to be a part of Newcastle’s new age as Sky Sports now share news on former Manchester United marksman Ighalo.

The Latest: Sky make Ighalo claim…

According to their information, the 36-cap Nigeria international has now been asked by his current club Al Shabab whether he would agree to join Newcastle and Howe should they make a move for him.

Ighalo’s response was apparently that he would seriously consider a move to St James’ Park should the Magpies and PIF come knocking.

The Verdict: Should they swoop?

Once called ‘superb’ by Geordie legend and all-time Premier League top scorer Alan Shearer (via African Football), the 32-year-old has previously turned it on for his former club Watford. Indeed, Ighalo bagged 16 goals and five assists in 27 Premier League appearances for the Hornets over 2015/16, but that was his last great season at an elite level.

Prolific campaigns have followed in both the Chinese Super League and Saudi Professional League but this arguably isn’t enough to prove that he could come in and seriously bolster Howe’s chances of Premier League survival.

It remains to be seen whether Newcastle do make contact, but it’s arguable that Ighalo’s signing wouldn’t pull up any trees.
