Middlesex, who a month ago could not buy a win, secured their quarter-final berth with a six-wicket victory over bottom side Sussex at Hove. Steve Finn ripped through the Sussex middle order with three wickets in two overs, although they did recover to 151 for 7. Billy Godleman’s 69 anchored a perfectly-paced chase as Middlesex eased home with an over to spare.Hampshire and Essex tied at Southampton, a result which leaves them level in second, one point ahead of fourth-placed Kent. Essex needed three off the last ball but Danish Kaneira could only get two, which means the two teams will meet again on Friday to decide who makes it to the quarter-finals. Michael Carberry hit 51 off 42 balls and added 79 with Michael Brown to take Hampshire to 164. Jason Gallian directed Essex’s chase with an attacking 55 and was run out when his side needed 65 more to win. Essex faced a mini-collapse as James Foster fell in the same over, caught for 12 off Nantie Hayward, who conceded only 21 runs in his four overs. The match got exciting when Essex needed 18 off the last two overs and Chris Tremlett conceded only seven, while picking up two wickets, so that 11 runs were required off the final over. But Kaneira and David Masters held their nerve and managed to keep their side alive in the tournament.Surrey recorded only their second win to deal a major blow to Kent’s quarter-final ambitions in a close game at Canterbury. Surrey were given a good start by Ally Brown and Scott Newman before they wobbled to 91 for 4. Abdul Razzaq and Jonathan Batty added 53 in seven overs before Batty (26) was caught of a leading edge and then in the penultimate over Razzaq was caught by Robert Key. Kent were in deep trouble at 55 for 5, but Azhar Mahmood thumped 55 from 31 balls in a seventh-wicket stand of 68 off 36 balls with Yasir Arafat. They still needed 14 from the final over, and from the first ball Mahmood was caught in the deep. Seven were needed off two deliveries but Ryan McLaren was caught at deep midwicket to end their hopes.

Worcestershire finished any hopes Gloucestershire might have had of reaching the last eight with an easy 59-run win at Worcester. Daryl Mitchell was the star with 4 for 11 in a low-scoring game as Gloucestershire were bowled out for 93 in reply to 152 for 8. Mark Hardinges had earlier taken 4 for 30. Stephen Moore top scored for Worcestshire with 41, while no Gloucestershire batsman got more than 27.

Lancashire booked their place in the last eight with a 23-run win over Nottinghamshire at Old Trafford. Click here for John Ward’s report. An unbroken 93-run partnership between Dale Benkenstein and Albie Morkel pushed Durham to the top of the North Division points table with a comfortable seven-wicket win over Derbyshire at the County Ground. Poor sunlight had reduced the game to 18 overs a side after more than half of Derbyshire’s innings was through. Rikki Clarke and Dan Birch boosted the total to 118 after a slow start, adding 33 together. But Durham’s target was revised to 121 and they looked like making a hash of the modest chase when they lost their openers for ducks. But after the loss of another wicket, Durham were steadied by Benkenstein and Morkel, who raced to the target in 15.2 overs.

Alan Nixon drops Derby transfer update

Derby County are preparing contracts in order to bring a number of trialists to Pride Park on a permanent basis this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Alan Nixon, with The Sun journalist revealing in a post on Twitter that Wayne Rooney’s side are currently in the process of selecting the free agents in training with the Rams that the club are going to offer a contract to.

Nixon continues by stating that the EFL have approved these deals, although the signings nevertheless have to fit certain criteria set by the governing body.

In his tweet, the journalist said: “Derby County. Now selecting the free agents they want to sign. EFL approval but with strings, as usual.”

Music to the ears of fans

With Derby kicking off their Championship campaign against Huddersfield Town in a little over a week’s time, and Rooney currently having just 13 contracted first-team players – two of whom are injured – in his squad, the news that the Rams are finally set to add a number of bodies to their ranks is sure to be music to the ears of fans.

At present, the 35-year-old manager is currently casting his eye over Sam Baldock, Sone Aluko, Ravel Morrison, Phil Jagielka, Andre Wisdom, Richard Stearman, Tom Carroll and Ryan Allsop, with the Rams having been given permission to sign five of these players on free transfers by the EFL.

Rooney has also been informed he can sign four players on loan deals in the summer transfer window, while the possibility of being able to land a further 10 free agents ahead of opening day rests on the HMRC being satisfied Derby have paid off some tax debt – which is expected to be completed this week.

As such, while the Rams are by no means out of the woods just yet regarding their off-field issues, at least the fans look as if they will have some new signings to get excited about in the coming days.

The buck stops with me – Hussain

England captain Nasser Hussain admitted that he had been mistaken to put Australia in on the opening day of the first Test against Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane.Australia declared their second innings on 296 for five, leaving England a winning target of 464, but they collapsed to 79 all out off just 28.2 overs to lose by 384 runs.”We played poorly in parts and today was not very good,” Hussain said. “We’ve lost in places like Sri Lanka and come back before, but Australia are setting the benchmark in world cricket at the moment and this will be our toughest test to date. We’ve just got to work hard in the nets and turn it round ourselves.””I read the wicket wrong on the first day and the buck stops with me on thatone,” he added. “I just thought if there was anything in the wicket we needed our young bowlers to get something, but there wasn’t anything in it.”Menwhile the Australian captain Steve Waugh was full of praise for man-of-the-match Matthew Hayden, who added a rapid 103 to his first-innings 197.”Matty Hayden is batting almost as well as anyone in the history of the gameat the moment,” said Waugh.”It was a pretty special Test match obviously, especially playing in front of my home crowd,” said Hayden. “It’s wonderful that you can get an opportunity to represent your country and then to achieve a milestone like that is something special.”

Who will be in the World Cup final 15

On 27 December the 15 names will be announced to represent Zimbabwe in the World Cup

John Ward21-Dec-2002On 27 December the 15 names will be announced to represent Zimbabwe in the World Cup. Naturally there is much speculation as to who will make the final cut.Ten years ago, when Zimbabwe first started in Test cricket, there were about 12 or 13 names who were automatic selections, and then the question was, "Who else can we put in to make up numbers?" Nowadays we have about 20 players all pressing their claims, so it is more of a question of who to leave out. Ironically, though the quantity may have increased, the quality has somewhat diminished, certainly at Test level. Our players need to rediscover the passion and commitment our team had during its first two or three years of Test cricket. There are perhaps nine players who are definites for the World Cup (if fit). Recent selections and current form seem to show that the selectors have decided on them already. They are as follows:Andy Blignaut, Andy Flower, Grant Flower, Travis Friend, Douglas Hondo, Henry Olonga, Heath Streak (captain), Tatenda Taibu, Mark Vermeulen. That leaves six places. There are another nine who can be regarded as possibles:Gary Brent, Alistair Campbell, Dion Ebrahim, Sean Ervine, Craig Evans, Doug Marillier, Brian Murphy, Mluleki Nkala, Guy Whittall, Craig Wishart.Several other players have represented Zimbabwe recently who probably will not be considered. This excludes Pommie Mbangwa and Raymond Price, both of whom would still be in my short list, but were not even included in the 30 announced by the selectors. If any of them do make the final side, it will be a major surprise. They are:Stuart Carlisle – lack of form. If the selectors were still considering him, they would surely have given him a chance against Kenya.Hamilton Masakadza – struggling to find quality cricket at the University of the Free State, and considered a specialist Test player at the moment in any case.Stuart Matsikenyeri – opened against Wasim and Waqar, struggled, was perhaps unlucky with at least one umpiring decision, and dropped after two matches without being resuscitated against Kenya.Waddington Mwayenga – promising but too inexperienced; given only one game against Pakistan.Barney Rogers – had two chances against Pakistan but still not quite ready for top international cricket.Richie Sims – same as for Rogers. If the selectors still had them in mind for the World Cup, they would surely have given them another run against Kenya to build their confidence. To return to the possibles. One position I hold is that experience and consistency are important qualities at all times, but even more so in the World Cup. In 1999 our players choked more than once in matches, finding the pressure too hot to handle and lacking self-belief – this is Dave Houghton’s view as well as my own. We need a strong backbone of players who can both perform and who have played enough at the most intense level to be able to handle it and hold the side together. Hopefully those who went through the 1999 World Cup will be stronger and wiser players for that experience. The World Cup is not a place for raw youngsters who have still to make their mark on international cricket.Alistair Campbell has many calling for his head, and may well have been dropped from the team already had he not been named captain for both recent series. He has reached double figures twice in his last ten one-day international innings. I feel he must still go, though with a strong warning that he must produce the goods. Dave Houghton believes Campbell plays best under this sort of pressure. His experience is much needed; form is temporary but class is permanent, even if it doesn’t show in Campbell’s averages. I don’t believe we have so much experience that we can afford to drop him altogether.I personally would promote Doug Marillier to the definites, but I’m not sure the selectors agree. Douggie is a match-winner, as he showed in India earlier this year, and almost did in Australia last year. We have few enough of those. He is also a useful and economical bowler.Guy Whittall is another whom I would definitely send. He has the experience, he can hammer the ball around in the middle order when quick scoring is urgently needed, and his medium-pacers can take vital wickets as well as contain the opposition. But he should do as little bowling as possible between now and the World Cup to try to keep his legs working properly. The others are harder to select. I would reluctantly omit Dion Ebrahim, as he has not shown enough form against the top teams in one-day cricket. Exclude a century and a fifty against Bangladesh, and his top score is 42, in 36 matches.Sean Ervine is another I would reluctantly leave out. He is certainly a player for the future and he has great potential as both batsman and bowler. At the moment, he is not quite consistent enough with either, in my view, if more experienced players like Whittall and Marillier are available.Mluleki Nkala really has no credentials on current bowling form; he has just lost it. Geoff Marsh and Alistair Campbell believe they are putting him back together again, but he has no chance to show it before the 15 are announced. He does score useful runs, but unless he can bowl well he will not be worth his place. He is certainly part of Zimbabwe’s long-term future in the game and I suspect the selectors might just include him for that reason. On recent form, though, it would be a major surprise. That leaves four players for three places – batsmen Craig Evans and Craig Wishart, seamer Gary Brent and spinner Brian Murphy.Evans and Wishart are both potential match-winners, although they do not do it very often. But which Zimbabweans do? Aggressive middle-order players, they can tear apart any weak links in a bowling attack. Evans, on his return to international cricket, played one superb innings, but did not follow it up and was soon dropped. Wishart played against Kenya, but only briefly had a chance to show he could bat, when he did all that could be expected of him. Could we take them both? I suspect the selectors will not, but I would be inclined to try.So far we have Blignaut, Friend, Hondo, Olonga, Streak and hopefully Whittall in the side who bowl seam. Bearing in mind our injury record, is this enough? Gary Brent has not been quite at his best this season, and the selectors have tried him briefly and discarded him. He has the virtue of accuracy, but I’m not sure the selectors are thinking of him any longer. For spinners we have Grant Flower and Doug Marillier, both of whom have good fitness records. Spinners do not generally prosper in South Africa. Brian Murphy is still not quite in his best form and confidence, though he looked more assured against minnows Kenya. For most places in the world I would want a specialist spinner – which would have to be Murphy, since Raymond Price is regarded as unfit for one-day cricket. But, with reluctance, I would leave him out of my side for South Africa. My World Cup 15, then, would be: Blignaut, Brent, Campbell, Evans, Andy Flower, Grant Flower, Friend, Hondo, Marillier, Olonga, Streak, Taibu, Vermeulen, Whittall, Wishart.I am not, though, privy to inside information that the selectors and players might know, so I do not set myself up as an expert! I suspect the selectors may want to include Ebrahim, Nkala and Murphy, but to do so would go against their recent records. I doubt whether they will take both Evans and Wishart, and we wait to see whether they will heed calls to get rid of Campbell and Whittall. They may decide in favour of Ervine’s potential.Only seven of the players in my 15 have played in the World Cup before: the Flowers, Campbell, Streak, Whittall, Evans and Olonga. I think we will need all of that. Will any of them still be around in four years’ time for the next World Cup in the West Indies?

Darren Gough denies rift with England

Darren Gough today issued the following statement in response to media reports concerning his knee injury

Media Release25-Jul-2002Darren Gough today issued the following statement in response to media reports concerning his knee injury.Gough said: “Despite what has been written in some newspapers, I have not had a row with the England team management about my knee injury, neither was I forced to play in the ‘Roses match’ against my wishes.”After coming through the C and G quarter-final match last week, my knee felt OK and after talking to Nasser and Duncan, it was decided that I would play against Lancashire. To be honest, I wanted to play in the Championship match for my own peace of mind as much as anything. I needed to be 100 per cent sure that I could get through a four-day game rather than just a one-day game as I had slight reservations about my ability to do so.””It’s an absolute nonsense to suggest that my knee injury has been misdiagnosed or that I was rushed into the ‘Roses match’ ahead of schedule. I’ve had great support from the medical team since I was injured and it’s just frustrating that I haven’t yet been able to get back to full fitness.”Once the two weeks rest period is up, I’m looking forward to getting back into the nets and hopefully playing cricket for Yorkshire. It will then be up to me to prove to Nasser and Duncan that my body is ready for a five-day Test Match. That’s my target for this summer, and everyone who knows me knows that I’ve never been one to shirk a challenge.”

Leeds youngster hails Pascal Struijk

Leeds United youngster Charlie Cresswell has lauded centre-back Pascal Struijk, admitting he looks up to the ‘amazing’ Whites defender.

The Lowdown: Struijk shines for Leeds

Marcelo Bielsa’s sides enjoyed a superb season back in the Premier League, finishing ninth in the table and proving to be entertaining on the eye.

Struijk was one of many Leeds players who impressed throughout the campaign, appearing in 27 league games and rarely letting the side down.

At 21, he is already playing with great maturity and it appears as though his efforts are appreciated by those around him.

The Latest: Cresswell lauds centre-back

Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds Under-23s’ captain Cresswell heaped praise on Struijk, admitting he is someone the entire academy looks up to:

“Pascal has been brilliant this season, he has done amazing. All of the Academy boys here have just looked up to him and gone ‘wow’.

“If he can be given an opportunity like that in the Premier League then that is something for us to strive for too. He gives us all hope.”

The Verdict: Top-quality addition

Struijk has been a great signing since arriving in 2019, and while he isn’t necessarily a guaranteed starter, his age means that could become a given over time.

His versatility makes him an even more priceless member of the squad, shining at both centre-back and in midfield, and Leeds will be desperate to keep hold of him for many years.

Struijk averaged 3.1 clearances per game in the league last season, which was more than any other Whites player, highlighting his defensive quality despite not always playing in his primary position.

In other news, a reliable journalist has provided a key update on Leeds’ quest to sign one player this summer. Find out who it is here.

Everton eye Marcelo swoop

Everton are closing in on the appointment of Nuno Santo as their new manager and with that in mind, they can finally begin thinking about recruitment.

The Toffees’ plans were thrown into disarray after Carlo Ancelotti left the club so a new list of targets may well have to be drafted in order to suit the incoming manager.

What’s the word?

According to The Mirror, Everton are locked in a battle to sign Real Madrid’s Marcelo.

The Brazilian’s contract expires in the summer of 2022 so could be available at a cut-price over the next few months.

The defender’s asking price is around the £5m mark with Leeds thought to be interested in the Madrid legend as well.

That being said, it’s the Toffees who are believed to be in pole position to sign Marcelo.

A massive coup

The left-back is now 33 years of age but there is no denying the incredible accomplishments of his career and indeed his talent.

Marcelo is a genuine legend at Real Madrid and has racked up over 500 appearances for the Spanish giants.

In the process, he’s won an impressive haul of trophies; including five La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues. Clearly, luring him to Goodison Park would be a massive coup.

A flair player, the 58-cap Brazil international is not only a ruthless tackler but he’s also a rampant force when he goes forward.

He won 1.6 tackles per game in La Liga this term while he produced 2.5 challenges per match. Capable of beating players for fun, at his peak Marcelo completed 2.6 successful dribbles an outing.

Given his age, the defender would be a fantastic mentor for Lucas Digne and would be able to step in reliably for the Frenchman should he require resting or be injured.

He would also arrive in Merseyside with a high dose of praise from a certain Carlo Ancelotti.

The Italian commented in 2014: “Since the World Cup, Marcelo has been the best full-back in the world without a doubt.”

A canny operator, this would be a sign of the ambition Everton have. They want to get back in the Champions League and by adding characters like him to their squad, they will have a greater chance.

Spurs legend keen on transfer of Euro 2020 ace - Exclusive

Graham Roberts has been impressed with Leonardo Spinazzola’s performances at Euro 2020 and believes he would be a fantastic signing for Tottenham Hotspur.

Italy have emerged as one of the frontrunners for the competition after two genuinely terrific performances.

Roberto Mancini’s side opened their campaign with a 3-0 win over Turkey, and followed that up with an impressive 3-0 victory over Switzerland on Wednesday.

They subsequently became the first team to reach the knockout stages of the competition, with Roma’s Spinazzola an impressive performer.

The 28-year-old played in both games, emerging as an impressive performer with his continuous bursts forward, and while he has played at left wing-back, he is naturally right-footed which suggests he could replace the likes of Serge Aurier on the opposite flank.

Reports have suggested that Spurs are watching his performances, and new sporting director Fabio Paratici should be well aware of him given he has only recently left Juventus.

And Roberts thinks he would be a top signing; Transfermarkt value the full-back, who can play on the right or the left, at £23.4m.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Roberts said: “He was brilliant. He was really, really good.

“Left wing-back, he was really, really good. I think he did look good the other night, I liked him. He was always in and around the goal area, he was always back.”
