West Indies allrounder Andre Russell will retire from international cricket after the first two T20Is against Australia on his home ground at Sabina Park in Jamaica.Russell, 37, has been a T20I-only player since 2019 and currently has 84 caps. His retirement comes seven months before the next T20 World Cup, which will be staged in India and Sri Lanka in February 2026. He also played one Test and 56 ODIs.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“Words cannot explain what it meant. To represent the West Indies has been one of the proudest achievements in my life,” Russell said. “When I was a kid, I did not expect to get to this level, but the more you start to play and get to love the sport, you realise what you can achieve. This inspired me to become better because I wanted to leave a mark in the maroon colours and become an inspiration to others.””I love playing for the West Indies and I love playing at home in front of my family and friends where I get to showcase my talent and produce more high-quality performances. I want to finish my international career on a high while being a role model for the next generation of cricketers coming out of the Caribbean.”Russell will become the second high-profile West Indies player, after Nicholas Pooran, to quit international cricket in less than two months. It’s understood West Indies’ selectors were not expecting Russell’s announcement.Russell was a part of the West Indies squads when they won the T20 World Cup in 2012 and then in 2016, when he took the new ball and dismissed Alex Hales in the second over in Kolkata.”Andre has always been the consummate professional and a fierce competitor,” coach Daren Sammy said. “Whether I was captaining him or now coaching him, his hunger to perform and win for West Indies has never wavered. I wish him all the best on his next chapter, and I hope he continues to inspire generations to come.”Matthew Forde will be Russell’s replacement in the squad against Australia for the St Kitts leg of matches.Meanwhile, teenager Jewel Andrew and Jediah Blades, 23, earned their maiden call-ups to the West Indies T20I squad. In CPL 2024, at 17 years and 266 days, Andrew had become the youngest West Indian and second youngest overall to score a fifty in a major T20 league. Andrew is currently part of Guyana Amazon Warriors in the ongoing Global Super League (GSL) in Guyana. As for Blades, he has not played the CPL so far but had impressed with the new ball during the inaugural West Indies breakout league, a tournament that was held recently to identify emerging talent from the region. Shai Hope will continue to lead the side, which also includes Rovman Powell, who missed the GSL for Dubai Capitals.”Our goals and strategic plans are aligned to winning the T20 World Cup in 2026,” Sammy said. “We have continuity in the squad from the previous series and as a unit we will continue to fine tune our style and brand ahead of the World Cup.””Our previous two T20 series at home we were on the wrong end of the results but starting against Australia, we want to regain our form at home as we build momentum into next year’s World Cup with our exciting and dynamic group of players.”West Indies squadShai Hope (capt), Jewel Andrew, Jediah Blades, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Evin Lewis, Gudakesh Motie, Rovman Powell, Andre Russell, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd

Shreyanka Patil, Priya Mishra ruled out of India A women's tour of Australia

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Jul-2025Offspinner Shreyanka Patil and legspinner Priya Mishra have been ruled out of the India A women’s tour of Australia due to injuries. While the pair was initially included in the squad for the multi-format tour – Patil in the T20 and Mishra in the one-day and four-day squad – their participation was subject to fitness clearance. It has now been confirmed that they have not recovered in time and will continue rehabilitating at BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.”Both players remain under the care of the BCCI Medical Team at the Centre of Excellence and are currently undergoing their Return-to-Play protocols,” a BCCI statemen said.Patil has been out of action for a while now. She had suffered a finger injury during the women’s Asia Cup in July last year but played at the T20 World Cup in the UAE in October. Another injury, however, ruled her out of the WPL 2025. With Patil and Mishra out, Bengal batter Dhara Gujjar and Uttarakhand allrounder Prema Rawat have now been added to the squad across all three formats. Gujjar was earlier part of the one-day and four-day squads, while Rawat was only included in the T20 squad. In addition, wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia has also been included in the one-day squad. Bhatia played at the WPL 2025 for Mumbai Indians earlier this year and more recently participated in two tour games against ECB Development Women’s XI.India’s multi-format tour of Australia starts with the T20s from August 7 in Mackay, and will run until August 10. Jacks applies the muscle as Surrey see off Gloucestershire

Will Jacks led the way with an impressive half century as Surrey defeated Gloucestershire by 28 runs at the Seat Unique Stadium to move a step closer to quarter-final qualification in the Vitality Blast. The England international hit 57 from 35 balls with a four and 5 sixes and dominated a stand of 87 in 9.2 overs for the third wicket with Sam Curran, who posted 46, as the visitors scored 193 for 7 after being inserted on a used Bristol track. Josh Shaw claimed 3 for 41 as Gloucestershire fought back, but knocks of 32 and 31 not out from Tom Curran and Dan Lawrence respectively carried Surrey to a formidable total.D’Arcy Short kept Gloucestershire in the hunt by scoring an eye-catching 70 from 53 balls, but he lacked support and Jacks and Adam Zampa claimed 4 for 56 between them from seven overs of spin as Surrey restricted the home side to 165 for 9. Seamers Sam Curran and Chris Jordan took 3 for 32 and 2 for 26 respectively as the Londoners won with something to spare.Victory moves second-placed Surrey to within eight points of South Group leaders Somerset, who have played a game more, but defending champions Gloucestershire will need to win their remaining four games if they are to have any chance of making the knockout stages. The evening had begun in promising fashion for Gloucestershire. So often the scourge of Surrey batsmen in the past, left arm seamer David Payne removed Dom Sibley in the first over, Cameron Bancroft taking a catch behind via an inside edge. Unfazed by events at the other end, Jacks hit Shaw for six over square leg and Jason Roy drilled his first ball for four. He top edged his third high to Ajeet Singh Dale at third man as Shaw reduced the visitors to 14 for 2.Sam Curran and Jacks launched a recovery thereafter, advancing the score to 41 for 2 at the end of the powerplay and plundering 15 runs from an over of off spin from Ollie Price to afford the innings much-needed impetus. The 50 partnership occupied 33 balls as the third wicket pair found acceleration, but Curran enjoyed a slice of good fortune when dropped on 29 by Singh Dale at short fine leg off the bowling of Ben Charlesworth.By now timing the ball supremely well, Jacks fed off Singh Dale’s pace, sending successive deliveries for six over long-on and long-off as Gloucestershire came under sustained pressure. Surrey were well-placed on 90 for 2 at halfway and Jacks brought up his 50 from 31 balls in the next over as the partnership flourished. Jacks lifted Matt Taylor over cow corner for six, but perished when he attempted a repeat performance next ball, finding Price at long-on and falling for 57 with the score 101 for 3.That was the cue for Curran to pick up the pace and Surrey’s captain helped himself to a six behind square off van Buuren. But the slow left armer exacted revenge next ball, Curran hitting to Short on the cover boundary and departing for a 33-ball 46. When Laurie Evans played an ugly shot across the line and was bowled by Singh Dale, Surrey had lost three wickets in 16 balls and were 118 for 5.Lawrence and Tom Curran then came together in a restorative alliance of 55 in 4.5 overs as the Londoners re-established their credentials. Curran smashed a quickfire 32 from 15 balls, including 5 fours and a six, while Lawrence finished unbeaten on 31 from 24 deliveries as Surrey raised 75 from the last six overs. Shaw accounted for Tom Curran and Ollie Sykes in the penultimate over, while Payne’s figures of 1 for 18 set him apart.Short and Miles Hammond staged an opening stand of 40 in 5.1 overs to lay solid foundations, but the latter was caught behind for 14 attempting to reverse sweep Jacks as pace off paid dividends for Surrey. Buoyed by his match-winning innings of 83 against Middlesex three days earlier, Short was in good touch, helping himself to three fours and a brace of sixes in the powerplay. Unfortunately for Gloucestershire, fellow Australian Bancroft was unable to stay with him, pulling a short delivery from Jacks to deep backward square and departing for 14 as the home side reached 78 for 2 at halfway. That became 78 for 3 in the next over, Price carving Adam Zampa to backward point as Surrey’s spinners turned the screw. While Short remained at large, the home side were still in with a chance, and their overseas star went to 50 from 39 balls and then celebrated by smashing Zampa over long-on for a huge six.But England bowler Chris Jordan kept things tight and Gloucestershire reached the end of the 15th on 120 for 3, needing another 74 to win at 14.8 an over. Their task became still more difficult when Sam Curran had Short held on the long-off boundary in the 16th. The Australian had accrued eight fours and three sixes and, with him, went Gloucestershire’s last vestige of hope.

Alexander Isak's Liverpool nightmare goes on! Arne Slot gives £125m striker 0.1% chance of recovering from injury for Reds' next game

Alexander Isak start to life at Liverpool has been far from smooth, and Arne Slot has shared a disappointing injury update ahead of their Premier League fixture against Aston Villa. There were high hopes when Isak arrived to spearhead the Reds' attack after his British-record move from Newcastle United, but his battle with fitness issues has derailed those ambitions. The forward limped off during their 5-1 demolition of Eintracht Frankfurt and hasn't featured since.

  • Six defeats in seven: Slot's storm intensifies

Six losses in their last seven matches, the latest a humiliating 3-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup, have left Liverpool on the edge of crisis. Four consecutive league defeats have allowed Arsenal to open a seven-point gap to them at the summit. The manager's task isn't getting easier with mounting injuries. Alongside Isak, several key players remain unavailable for Saturday’s clash with Villa. Star goalkeeper Alisson Becker continues to recover from a muscle issue, while Jeremie Frimpong is sidelined with a hamstring injury. Midfielder Curtis Jones, who was forced off in the recent loss to Brentford, is also ruled out. Teenage defender Giovanni Leoni is still nursing a long-term injury, which might keep him out until the business end of the campaign if not the entirety of it. Amid the gloom and despair, there is a flicker of good news as Ryan Gravenberch has returned to full training. The Dutch midfielder twisted his ankle against Manchester United earlier this month and has missed three crucial matches, during which Liverpool conceded seven goals. However, there is a growing sense of optimism regarding his availability if he comes through training unscathed.

Slot provides injury updates on Isak & Gravenberch

Slot offered a mixed update in his pre-match press conference, outlining the fragile state of his squad.

"Ryan trained with us yesterday. The other two (Isak and Jones) didn't yet," Slot said. "In the end phase of the injury, things can slow down a bit or things can go faster but Ryan trained with us yesterday and he will train with us today and then we will make the call whether he is able to start. The other two are 99.9% sure not in the squad on Saturday."

  • Slot happy with Liverpool's squad depth despite previous comments

Slot made wholesale changes to his squad that bowed out of the Carabao Cup following the loss to Palace. However, despite the mounting criticism about his team selection, the Dutch manager remained defiant and hit back at suggestions that his squad lacks quality or depth. Instead, the former Feyernoord coach blamed the club’s injury crisis and the gruelling fixture schedule for the team’s collapse in form.

"We have enough to play the games, but I have to take care of a few of them, why I made the decision not to play seven or eight," he said. "I am happy with the team, the quality we have and convinced by the strategy and policy we have. But that makes it the issue, not all of them had a proper pre-season or have been injured, so when three or four are injured you go back to 15 or 16. I am convinced 20 is enough but we are struggling to keep them fit for obvious reasons.

"Alex came to us on September 1, and it has been harder to keep them fit, so if a few aren't available, it comes to the same players. Maybe last season we were lucky, and now unlucky? But we've had a few away games with only a few days' rest in between. No excuses, before people say…We have to manage the situation, three games in seven or eight days. So nothing to do with squad depth, more just injuries and availability of players."

Villa visit comes at a crucial time

With Isak sidelined, the stage is set for Hugo Ekitike to lead the Liverpool attack against Villa. The visitors have a few injury issues of their own. Andres Garcia, Youri Tielemans, and Emiliano Buendia are all doubts for the trip to Merseyside, while young midfielder Harvey Elliott, who is on loan from Liverpool, is ineligible to face his parent club.

Liverpool ready to pay £130m to sign Salah replacement, he can "do everything"

Liverpool are willing to once again break their transfer record in order to sign a player who can “do everything”, and he is seen as a replacement for Mohamed Salah.

Slot assesses another Liverpool defeat

The Premier League champions suffered their third defeat in a week on Saturday, losing 2-1 at Chelsea, with the Reds heading into the international break in worrying form.

Speaking after the game, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot offered an honest verdict, admitting there were still aspects of the performance that he liked.

“Another disappointing loss. That’s clear. Another game similar to the Palace game, although the game was completely different because the playing style of both teams are completely different. But not similar to the Palace game where in the first half I think we played not our best football but still were able to create three big chances.

“They’ve only had one and they’ve immediately scored it, which was completely different to the Palace game, where Palace created a lot of chances in the first half. And the second-half performance, like in Palace, I liked, we’ve created more than enough chances to score more than one goal – last week and today. I think there was a period of the game where I felt, ‘Now we’re going to win it.'”

Salah struggled badly once again, with the Liverpool legend in poor form, and a potential replacement for him has now been linked with a move to Anfield.

Liverpool willing to sign £130m Salah replacement

According to a report from Spain, Liverpool are preparing to pay £130m to sign Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise, breaking their transfer record again in the process, with the Reds seeing him as a replacement for Salah.

The Frenchman has grown into one of the best wingers in Europe currently, and Chelsea and Manchester City are also mentioned as options for him.

Writing Salah off feels far too premature, with the Egyptian simply not playing with his usual confidence, but at 33, it is clear that he can’t go on forever.

Finding a long-term successor to him at Liverpool has to be considered priority transfer business, and in Olise, the Reds could have the perfect option to take on the mantle.

The former Crystal Palace man can be a joy to watch, gliding in off the right wing onto his left foot, and he has been lauded by Bayern teammate Dayot Upamecano: “He’s a magician. His technical level is very high. He can do everything. He can score, set up, and even defend.”

Most importantly, Olise has substance as well as style, which will be needed to replace Salah, with four goals and assists apiece already coming his way for Bayern this season.

It didn’t go to plan for the Reds boss.

At 23 years of age, he has so much time to improve, and while £130m is an enormous amount of money, Liverpool signing the Frenchman could be a masterstroke as the years pass.

India 'leaning towards' playing Bumrah at Old Trafford

We return to the Jasprit Bumrah question once again: will India play him in the fourth Test against England in Manchester or will he be rested until the final game at The Oval? A definitive answer should come by the eve of the fourth Test, which begins on July 23, but on Thursday India hinted that they are “leaning” towards Bumrah playing at Old Trafford.”No, we’ll make that call [on Bumrah] in Manchester still,” India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said after the squad’s one-off training session in Beckenham before the visitors head to Manchester on Saturday. “We know we have got him for one of the last two Tests. It’s pretty obvious that the series on the line now in Manchester so there will be a leaning towards playing him.”But again, we have got to look at all the factors: how many days of cricket are we going to get up there, what do we feel is our best chance of winning that game, and then how that fits in together with The Oval. And looking at the last two games holistically as part of the series.”Related

Bumrah arrived in England for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy with a pre-determined plan, worked out in coordination with the BCCI medical staff, of playing only three out of the five Tests to safeguard his back, having undergone surgery on it in March 2023. He sat out of the second Test at Edgbaston after featuring in the series opener at Headingley where he picked up a five-for in the first innings and went wicketless in the second as England took a 1-0 lead. Bumrah not playing in Birmingham despite there being an eight-day break between the first two Tests attracted severe criticism, with former India coach Ravi Shastri telling that the decision should be taken out of the player’s hands with the team management taking the final call. Despite Bumrah’s absence, India bounced back at Edgbaston to draw level at 1-1.At Lord’s, where England won a closely-contested Test in the final session, Bumrah took seven wickets including another five-for in the first innings. With another eight-day break between the third and fourth Tests, the focus will be on Bumrah again. The challenge for India’s team management is that they now need to focus on managing not just Bumrah’s workload but also that of their second strike bowler Mohammed Siraj, the leading wicket-taker in this series with 13 at 32.00. Siraj has also bowled 109 overs, the fourth-biggest workload of any bowler in the series behind those of Shoaib Bashir, Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse. On Tuesday, all three fast bowlers who played for India at Lord’s – Bumrah, Siraj and Akash Deep – did not bowl while doing their basic fitness routines. Siraj batted, however, and seemed to have recovered from the agony of the Lord’s defeat, which was sealed when he defended Bashir off the middle of his bat only for the ball to roll back onto his stumps.Jasprit Bumrah has taken 12 wickets so far in the series at an average of 21.00•PTI

Rishabh Pant did not bat on Thursday, nor did he keep wickets, as he focused on light training. Pant is yet to recover completely from the injury he suffered to his left index finger while diving to stop a ball down the leg side during England’s first innings at Lord’s. Though he batted in both innings, Pant did not keep wickets after suffering the injury, with Dhruv Jurel taking his place on the field. There was no taping on Pant’s index finger on Thursday, but while his injury is healing, any impact on the finger remains painful. Ten Doeschate said India were optimistic Pant would play in Manchester, with the only question being whether or not he would keep wickets.”He [Pant] will bat in Manchester before the Test,” ten Doeschate said. “Look, I don’t think you’re going to keep Rishabh out of the Test no matter what. He batted with quite a lot of pain in the third Test and it’s only going to get easier and easier on his finger. And keeping’s obviously the last part of the process to make sure that he can keep. We don’t want to go through that again where we have to replace the keeper halfway through innings.”Does that mean India are potentially looking at having Jurel keep wickets with Pant playing exclusively as a batter? Ten Doeschate did not rule out that scenario. “Jurel’s in the equation, but I mean obviously if Rishabh’s fit, he plays the next Test and does both.”Meanwhile, left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh suffered a cut on one of his fingers on the bowling hand while intercepting the ball in his follow-through during training. Arshdeep walked out immediately and had his hand taped. Ten Doeschate said it was not clear yet whether Arshdeep would need stitches and how it would impact India’s planning including whether Arshdeep will be in contention to play in Manchester. “We’ll take a call on the combination we play, particularly given the Arshdeep situation as well. We’ll make that call closer to Manchester.”With the regular fast bowlers resting and Arshdeep walking off, India bowling coach Morne Morkel stepped in to fill in the breach. Delivering from in front of the popping crease, the former South Africa fast bowler tested all the batters not just with the steep bounce he was famous for but also seam movement in both directions, forcing edges or prompting polite enquires for lbw.India will travel to Manchester on July 19 and resume training on Sunday.

KL Rahul, the other centurion in the match, moved up five spots, as did Ravindra Jadeja, who notched fifties in both innings, including a stubborn 61 not out that went in vain in their chase of 193. Jadeja and Rahul went up to Nos. 34 and 35, respectively.Australia’s Steven Smith jumped above Yashasvi Jaiswal to go fourth on the charts after making 48 in the first innings of the low-scoring day-night Test in Jamaica. Jaiswal had scores of 13 and 0 at Lord’s – the first time he failed to go past fifty in a Test against England. While Jasprit Bumrah kept his place at the top of the bowling charts after a five-for against England, Scott Boland went up six places to sixth thanks to his six wickets, including a second-innings hat-trick, against West Indies.Mitchell Starc, who claimed figures of 6 for 9 as Australia bundled West Indies out for 27 in the fourth innings, stayed at No. 10 on the bowling charts, although he gained two spots in the allrounder rankings, which is still topped by Jadeja.

£86m striker who Harry Maguire called "world-class" now key target for Man Utd

A striker who Harry Maguire called “world-class” has now emerged as a key target for Manchester United, having made a fantastic start to the season.

Man Utd keen on new striker despite Sesko's improved form

There were some concerns about the way in which Benjamin Sesko started the season, given that the striker is among Man United’s most expensive signings of all-time, but the Slovenian has started to put in improved performances in recent weeks.

The 22-year-old scored United’s only goal in the disappointing 3-1 loss against Brentford, before going on to score the second in the 2-0 victory over Sunderland, finding the back of the net with a smart finish from inside the box.

Despite the uptick in Sesko’s output, however, the Red Devils remain keen on adding another striker to their ranks, with Ruben Amorim arguably a little light on options, given that Joshua Zirkzee, who scored just three Premier League goals last term, is the current back-up.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Man United have now identified Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane as a key target, although their chances of beating Tottenham Hotspur to his signature are dependent upon improving their current league standing.

United may struggle to convince Kane to move to Old Trafford, with the striker prioritising a move to a club playing in Europe and competing for regular silverware, and the 32-year-old’s emotional connection to Spurs could play a part in his decision-making.

The former Tottenham man, who joined Bayern Munich for £86m back in 2023, arguably has unfinished business in the Premier League, with Alan Shearer’s goal record within reach, although he has already established himself as one of the best strikers in top-flight history.

"World-class" Kane would be major coup for Man Utd

Man United are credited with a long-term interest in the Bayern star, and it is no surprise, given that he is England’s all-time leading goalscorer, with Maguire previously lauding the impact his teammate has made at international level.

The centre-back said: “He leads by example on and off the pitch and he’s a great person to have around the dressing room. He’s a magnificent, world-class player. He proves it year after year and his attitude to training is the reason why.”

The England captain has been a consistent top-level striker for more than a decade, but there are early signs the current campaign could be his best yet, having already bagged a whopping 18 goals in all competitions.

“It’s not good news for Bash,” Ben Stokes said after the match. “Very disappointing for us as a team and for him, a big shame.”The courage that he showed to go out there and bat at the end for us and willing to sit there on the bench waiting for his moment to come on and bowl just proves how much it means to everyone who gets the opportunity to put the shirt on, that not even a couple of breaks is going to stop anyone getting out there.”Bashir defied the pain to bat in England’s second innings, facing nine balls in scoring two runs before he became the last wicket to fall, Washington Sundar’s fourth, as England set India a target of 193.After he had spent much of the fourth innings off the field, Stokes called on Bashir in the 55th over as England sought the final two wickets they needed for victory and a 2-1 series lead with Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah in the midst of a stubborn 35-run partnership off 132 balls. With his ring and little finger splinted together and heavily bandaged, Bashir bowled three overs in an elongated middle session in which Stokes removed Bumrah to make it nine down.

In the field, Bashir held his left hand gingerly out of the way as he ran around from mid-off and dived to his right to cut off a boundary. But he returned to the attack immediately after the tea break and that’s when the moment Stokes described to as “written in the stars” happened. It was 2.5 overs into that second spell and it happened so fast, yet in slow-motion, the result elation, yet devastation. Bashir tossed one up above No. 11 Mohammed Siraj’s eyeline as he played back to some ferocious back-spin, the ball rolling down the bat face into the crease then dribbling onto leg stump, just one of the bails falling off gently, yet cruelly, to the ground.”What an amazing feeling for him to be able to take that wicket there and with his hand in the state that it’s in, amazing,” Stokes told his post-match press conference. “Very proud of the way that he went about the rest of the week after having to come off the field.”There would be a lot of people who might not necessarily have been brave enough to go out there and face Bumrah and then also put himself up for wanting to get out there and bowl and help his team.”Stokes and Bashir shared a long embrace in celebration, which was no doubt bittersweet given the bowler’s circumstances. England will name their squad for the fourth Test, starting at Old Trafford on July 23, in the coming days.Liam Dawson returned to international duty after more than two years last month•Getty ImagesDawson, Leach in contentionLiam Dawson made a successful return to international duty after more than two years in the first match of England’s T20I series against West Indies last month, returning career-best figures of 4 for 20, and is in contention as a replacement for Bashir, as is fellow left-arm spinner Jack Leach.”Every time I looked around at the bench and asked for a drink, I’d just see Bash’s little head peeking through there ready to go,” Stokes said. “We were told by the match officials that he could stay off the field when he wasn’t bowling, but if he was bowling he had to stay out there.”And look, we obviously threw a lot at their batting line-up today with seam so just breaking that flow of the game up with spin every now and again was something I was going to go to. We all thought it was a good option and it was great that Bash was able to get that last wicket with what he had to deal with this week.”Bashir finished with 1 for 59 from 14.1 overs in India’s first innings, where they equalled England’s total of 387, and his subsequent 1 for 6 from 5.5 overs took his tally for the series to 10 at an average of 54.10. That one wicket will give him plenty to smile about during the road ahead.
