West Ham keep tabs on teenage prodigy

West Ham will continue to monitor Kerr Smith after nearly signing him on transfer deadline day last month…

What’s the word?

That’s according to the ever-reliable ExWHUemployee, who delivered a fresh update on the situation on the recent episode of ‘The West Ham Way’ podcast.

He said: “A guy called Kerr Smith who we were close to signing on deadline day, he is one as well who we are keeping an eye on.”

The Irons were linked with the Dundee United gem during the summer, with The Sun’s Alan Nixon claiming that there was also interest from Premier League rivals Southampton and Crystal Palace.

It was even thought that manager David Moyes wanted the 16-year-old to come to London for talks over a potential move, which speaks volumes considering his age.

Moyes masterclass

The Hammers, and Moyes in particular, made some very smart signings throughout the summer, ranging from the arrival of Champions League winner Kurt Zouma to the addition of potential future star Thierry Nevers.

Smith would undoubtedly be a signing for the long-term but the fact that the 58-year-old would have liked to speak to him personally suggests that there is a first-team element in mind – and understandably so.

The young centre-back has already made his senior bow for the Terrors and has racked up a total of seven appearances since the start of last season.

It’s thought that Smith has a £500k release clause in his contract, which for a Premier League side like West Ham is peanuts. He has even trained with Aston Villa, Manchester United and Everton, as per the Courier, so he’s clearly caught the eye in recent years.

The vastly experienced Mark Connolly, his teammate at Tannadice Park, spoke glowingly about the teenager back in April this year.

“Kerr, who played beside me, was fantastic. He’s 16 years of age and it’s incredible,” he told reporters after a defeat to Kilmarnock. “It’s the way the football club wants to go, bringing young players through, and this boy’s ready.”

The 6-foot emerging talent would fit into the mould of what Moyes has been doing in recent times, having overseen the progression of academy talents like Ben Johnson.

If the Scotsman can secure one of the biggest talents from his home country, then he deserves to be lauded for pulling off another masterstroke in the transfer window, especially after being given the full authority over such decisions.

Mumbai's road to the final

Cricinfo traces Mumbai’s path to the final of the Super League of the 2008-09 Ranji Trophy

Round 1, v Rajasthan in Mumbai

Scorecard
After failing to enter the knockout round last season Mumbai needed a fresh start. They bounced back in resounding fashion with a 237-run win over Rajasthan at home. Dhawal Kulkarni fell short of matching Suru Nayak’s record of picking 10 wickets on debut as he lead Mumbai’s bowling on his bony shoulders admirably even as Ajit Agarkar went wicketless. Senior offspinner Ramesh Powar matched Kulkarni’s five-wicket haul in the first innings with his own, as the duo doused Rajasthan’s spirits in clinical fashion. Their hardwork was equalled by a quickfire in-a-session century by Rohit Sharma which put the game out of Rajasthan’s reach.Round 2, v Gujarat in Surat

Scorecard
This one was a tougher gambit. Gujarat had just overwhelmed Saurashtra by an innings. Mumbai’s challenge was increased by the departure of Rohit, who had left to play the ODI series against England. But Wasim Jaffer proved his credentials as a domestic giant, sharing a match-turning 218-run second-wicket partnership with Ajinkya Rahane. Both batsman cracked the season’s first tons respectively. Kulkarni displayed his prowess to strike early once again with four first-innings wickets and Gujarat were forced to follow-on. On return, the hosts suffered the second-worst defeat in their Ranji history, with Mumbai thundering to an innings-and-239-run win to establish their supremacy once again. Kulkarni, Agarkar and Powar picked three each as Gujarat were gobbled up for 44, which was just one run more than their lowest total in the Ranji Trophy, 43 against Bombay in 1958-59.Round 3, v Delhi in Delhi

Scorecard
The usual needle to this rivalry was somewhat in Mumbai’s favour: compared to their two outright victories, Delhi were languishing in the bottom half with just three points. The absence of regulars like Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, and Ashish Nehra hurt them further. Mumbai got off to an anxious start when they lost Jaffer early on (2 for 72) but Rahane showed his fast-growing maturity with the second straight hundred, as he combined well with Mumbai’s most senior batsman Amol Muzumdar in a 223-run stand for the third wicket. In a match stuttering towards a draw after Delhi conceded a 35-run first-inning lead, Mumbai gained some batting practice with Sahil Kukreja scoring a double-hundred. Mumbai retained top place in the group with first-innings points.Round 4, v Saurashtra in Rajkot

Scorecard
In the end Mumbai were left trembling on the precipice and the fall was avoided by the stiff resistance of their lower middle-order led by Ramesh Powar. After Saurashtra amassed 643 for 4 with centuries from the opening combine of Chirag Pathak, making his debut, Bhusan Chavan and Cheteshwar Pujara, another debutant, Balkrishna Jadeja, rattled Mumbai’s top-order forcing them to follow-on. Balkrishna returned to add Jaffer and Rahane on the final morning. At 89 for 5 Saurashtra were eyeing a big victory, but Powar refused to give up and his four-hour-long vigil gave Mumbai the solace of a single point.Round 5, v Hyderabad in Mumbai

Scorecard
Cricket returned to Mumbai after the metropolis was rocked by the 26/11 terror blasts. Just like its citizens were looking to return to normal life, the cricketers, too, wanted to bounce back after the damage wrecked by Saurashtra. Jaffer’s sparkling 256 and a record 335-run partnership with Rahane laid the foundation for the victory. Kulkarni’s 7-50, career-best figures, ensured that Hyderabad were crushed by an innings and 108 runs. Mumbai earned the bonus point for the second time.

Round 6, v Orissa in Cuttack

Scorecard
Virtually assured of a knockout berth, Mumbai decided to offer chances to rookies including debutant Rahil Shaikh, a tall, raw, left-arm fast bowler. On a skiddy pitch Mumbai were knocked out for 180, but the trio of Kulkarni, Kshemal Waingankar and Shaikh ran through the hosts quickly, helping Mumbai to a 72-run lead. Then Rahane turned the match on its head, blasting a run-a-ball double century, a career-best performance that gave Mumbai an ample lead and time to bowl out Orissa. A 315-run victory put Mumbai into the quarterfinals.Round 7, v Punjab in Mumbai

Scorecard
Muzumdar jumped ecstatically in the air, doffed his cap towards the dressing room to thank his team-mates after he recorded the season’s first century, thus putting to an end fits-and-starts-run in the previous rounds. His efforts had put Mumbai well ahead of Punjab, who were restricted to 202 after electing to bat. Though Uday Kaul delayed the inevitable with a stubborn 136 (unbeaten), Jaffer and Rahane blasted their way to the 149-run target to finish the league campaign on a victorious note, at the end of which Mumbai had the highest number of wins (5).Quarter-finals, v Himachal Pradesh in Ahmedabad

Scorecard
Though victory was achieved comfortably in the end this game once again exposed Mumbai’s bowlers’ inability to finish off the job. At 74 for 5 Himachal were reeling under severe pressure on the first day but they managed to get to 250. Jaffer then picked up his third century while Rohit missed his second by two runs; Mumbai scored 495. Once again Himachal were proving to be gritty customers, starting the final day on 200 for 5, but Agarkar, who had missed a couple of games previously due to bad health, returned to grab three quick wickets in seven balls. He went on to grab his first five-wicket haul of the season. Mumbai crossed the target of 43 easily to set up an enticing clash with Saurashtra.Semis, v Saurashtra, in Chennai

Scorecard
Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan returned to strengthen Mumbai’s resolve to settle the scores with Saurashtra. But despite the huge amount of experience in their ranks Mumbai once again had to sweat it out to topple their plucky opponents. Jaffer’s triple ton and Tendulkar’s spectacular century had helped Mumbai to a mammoth total. But a mixture of solid resistance from Saurashtra’s batsmen, sloppy fielding, aimless bowling and the impending scare of a cyclone almost spoilt Mumbai’s progress. Kotak once again erected a wall that none of the bowlers could break through, but once he flicked one into the hands of short fine leg at the end of the third evening, Mumbai found another opening to bounce back. It still took them a while, what with the lower-order pair of Kamlesh Makwana and Rakesh Dhruv surviving the first session, but Mumbai wrapped up the matter in the nick of time before bad light forced the game to be abandoned.

West Indies ease to 40-run win

ScorecardWest Indies made the perfect start to their tour of Sri Lanka with a win in the first ODI in Dambulla. Stacy Ann-King laid the foundation with her 70 and offspinners Afy Fletcher and Stefanie Taylor shared six wickets between them to ensure a comfortable 40-run win.Sri Lankan captain Shashikala Siriwardene looked to have made the correct decision to field first, as Sripali Weerakkody struck in the second over, trapping Deandra Dottin leg-before. Chamani Seneviratna then removed Juliana Nero as West Indies were reduced to 27 for 2 in the seventh over.As King held up one end, a steady trickle of wickets at the other saw West Indies struggle at 50 for 5. Weerakkody was the wrecker-in-chief picking up three wickets during the collapse.Useful stand with Danielle Small and Kiribyina Alexander saw King guiding the team to relative safety at 136, bringing up her half-century in the process. However, left-arm spinner Suwini de Alwis ensured there was no fightback by removing Alexander, Anisa Mohammed and King in three successive overs. King hit eight fours and two sixes in her 100-ball innings. It was Shanel Daley’s unbeaten 16 that helped West Indies to cross the 150-mark and finally finish on 167.Openers Dedunu Silva and Chamari Polgampola gave Sri Lanka a good start to their chase, but Fletcher dismissed Silva with 39 on the board; Siriwardene followed 12 runs later.Polgampola and Hiruka Fernando then looked to rebuild the innings, putting on 40 for the second wicket. But a dramatic collapse was to follow.Polgmapola was out lbw to Mohammed, who again struck in her next over, getting Fernando caught and bowled with the score 94 for 4. Taylor accounted for de Alwis and Eshani Kaushalya in successive balls as the momentum swung back in favour of the visitors.Taylor bowled Weerakoddy to end with figures of 8-2-10-3 as West Indies closed in on victory. Fletcher took the final wicket of Dilani Manodara to finish with 3 for 21 and wrap up the win, as Sri Lanka lost their last six wickets for 18 runs.

Sky Sports drop Zouma to West Ham claim

Speaking on live TV (via Football Daily), broadcast giant Sky Sports have made a West Ham United transfer claim involving Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma.

The Lowdown: West Ham in centre-back race?

Former central defender Fabian Balbuena’s exit from east London has left manager David Moyes with fairly few options in that position.

The Scotsman has just Issa Diop, Angelo Ogbonna and Craig Dawson as senior first team options, and with the August transfer deadline looming, time is slowly running out to strengthen.

Signing a new centre-half had been tipped as one of Moyes’ top priorities at the start of this window and Sky Sports have now brought news on their hunt.

The Latest: Sky Sports make Zouma to West Ham claim…

Speaking live on air (via FD), the broadcaster has dropped some pretty big news involving Zouma and West Ham.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments/” title=”West Ham latest developments…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, they claim that talks have now commenced over signing the 26-year-old from London rivals Chelsea.

“This involves West Ham, we’re told you’re in talks with Chelsea over the signing of defender Kurt Zouma,” Sky stated.

“West Ham, we’re told, are prepared to pay around £20 million for Zouma, now that would fall under Chelsea’s valuation.

“However, key to this is that Zouma is settled in London and, as it stands, would welcome that move over being part of a swap deal involving Sevilla’s Jules Kounde.”

The Verdict: Get it done…

If West Ham can secure a deal for Zouma, there is little doubt he would reinforce Moyes’ central defensive options.

The towering 6 foot 3 colossus has experience playing at the highest level of European football as well as the Premier League, and at 26-years-old, could still have many years ahead of him.

As well as this, the Frenchman averaged a cool 90.9% pass accuracy over 22 league starts for Chelsea last campaign (WhoScored) – perhaps indicating he could be the composed figurehead of West Ham’s backline.

Zouma also bagged five Premier League goals over 2020/2021, highlighting the fact he can also be a threat at the other end.

Given his credentials, there appear to be very few downsides to this possible move.

Inkersole: West Ham need a 10-15 goal per season striker

Football London writer Sam Inkersole believes that West Ham United need to add a goalscorer to their ranks this summer.

The Hammers finished a very impressive sixth in the Premier League last term, just two points off the final Champions League place which went to Chelsea.

West Ham scored 62 goals in the league last season which was an average of 1.63 goals per game. Michail Antonio and Tomas Soucek led the Hammers’ scoring charts with 10 goals each, but Inkersole believes the club need a goalscorer.

“They just need a striker that can give them ten, fifteen goals, I think that should be enough for them because they get plenty of goals from midfield in Bowen,” Inkersole told Football FanCast.

One player West Ham have been linked with is Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham, but they face competition from London rivals Arsenal, with The Sun reporting the Gunners are apparently leading the race for his signature.

Last season’s Hammers loan star Jesse Lingard is another name linked with a move back to the London Stadium.

After scoring nine goals in the second half of the season, which saw Lingard become West Ham’s third leading Premier League scorer, a full season for the club could see him become that ten-to-fifteen a season goalscorer Inkersole reckons the club needs, but a deal appears unlikely with the Manchester United man scoring a pre-season goal for his club against Queens Park Rangers last weekend.

Wolves transfer update on Dendoncker

Lots of Wolves fans have been left delighted as a transfer update emerged on Leander Dendoncker.

As per Calciomercato, the Belgium international is in the sights of AS Roma ahead of a potential move before the summer window shuts.

However, he is currently valued in the region of €25m (£21.2m), and the Serie A club are have been put off by that price tag.

Dendoncker came under some criticism from members of the Molineux faithful for some of his performances while in an Old Gold shirt in the 2020/21 season, and generally did not seem to offer much from midfield, managing to score just one goal and provide no assists in 37 games in total over all competitions (Transfermarkt).

Thus, selling him for a good price would be a wise idea by the Midlands club, as they can then reinvest that money back into the squad, with players wanted by new manager Bruno Lage.

Mumbai Indians’ physiotherapist Nitin Patel is likely to be appointed to the Indian team for the upcoming tri-series in Bangladesh and the Asia Cup in June. The BCCI has also decided to appoint Venkatesh Prasad and Robin Singh as the bowling and fielding coaches respectively until the Asia Cup on an ad-hoc basis.Prasad, who is also the bowling coach with the Bangalore franchise, confirmed his appointment to Cricinfo. “The BCCI told me they were appointing me as the bowling coach for the Bangladesh tri-series and the Asia Cup after which they will negotiate a contract,” Prasad said. Both his and Robin’s contracts expired on May 30.A BCCI official told Cricinfo that Patel was close to signing his papers, and if that happens he will replace Paul Close, who was a stop-gap physio for the home Test series against South Africa earlier this year.Niranjan Shah, the BCCI secretary, neither confirmed nor denied the news.Patel has already worked with the Indian team, when he replaced John Gloster during the tour of England in 2007. Gloster had fractured his elbow during a fielding session and had to undergo surgery, so Patel continued as the physio for the remainder of the series. The team was impressed by Patel’s performance and a BCCI official pointed out that even Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India’s one-day captain, was happy with his work. Before going to England, Patel was the physio with the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team for three years. The BCCI had to fill the positions of physiotherapist and physical trainer after the simultaneous exits of John Gloster and Gregory King after the CB Series in Australia. Close, who was appointed as the National Cricket Academy physio, was asked to fill the vacancy temporarily but it has been learnt that he injured his Achilles tendon and had to undergo surgery recently.Andrew Leipus, the former physio of the Indian team, and Ewan Speechley, a renowned South African physio who was with Bangalore Royal Challengers, were the other names discussed by the BCCI. Leipus came close to taking up the offer but he might be heading to the ICC’s headquarters in Dubai.
