Malik ton, Riaz aggression give Pakistan big win

Return of international cricket to Pakistan might have been fraught with threat of violence, but the first ODI in the country in six years brought about the most non-violent 375 you could imagine, setting up a 41-run win

A run feast at Lahore

The return of international cricket to Pakistan might have been fraught with threats of violence, but the first ODI in the country in six years brought about the most non-violent 375 you could imagine, setting up a 41-run win. In an incredibly cool and calculated innings, hardly a shot was hit in anger as Azhar Ali, Mohammad Hafeez, Shoaib Malik and Haris Sohail chipped and chopped an innocuous attack to the highest total in Pakistan. However, the thinness of Pakistan’s attack, the flatness of the pitch and the fact that Zimbabwe’s batting is much stronger than their bowling, became apparent in the chase with only Wahab Riaz looking like taking a wicket. Elton Chigumbura scored a chancy century, Hamilton Masakadza a fifty, but the chase only kicked into life towards the end, by which time the asking rate had reached 15 an over, a task too tall with four Wahab overs to contend with.Considering Mohammad Sami and Anwar Ali’s struggle with the ball, Pakistan will be thankful their batsmen posted the total they did. This was the first time all of their top four scored fifty or more, and the first Pakistan innings to feature two 150-run stands. Malik’s 112 off 76 was his fastest century. Pakistan hit 35 fours and 10 sixes in all, but that masked the lack of frenetic hitting and powerful strokes you associate such big scores with.Azhar and Hafeez began sedately before opening up in a 170-run stand, Pakistan’s third-highest opening partnership at home. The duo missed out on what looked like certain centuries, falling within eight balls of each other, but Malik and Sohail took over from where they left, and added some more intent as you would expect after a strong opening. Playing for the first time in two years, Malik posted his first score of more than 43 in five years, at once reminding you why he had been dropped and why quite a few have been disappointed with an unfulfilled career.Azhar and Hafeez were Pakistan’s fourth opening combination in their last five ODIs, and the tentativeness showed in their start – eight runs in five overs on a pitch that never misbehaved. In the sixth over though, Azhar, the captain playing his first international at home, took the first risk, playing across the line of a ball outside off, placing it wide of mid-on for three. That shot was the release as he raced away to 21 off 24 with Hafeez labouring to five off the same number of deliveries.Zimbabwe’s attack didn’t have the necessary threat to hold the openers back. Hafeez got going with pick-up shots for four and six off Tinashe Panyangara in the ninth over. Azhar reached his fifty first, and Hafeez was on his heels and when he hit the remodelled Prosper Utseya – now bowling little legrollers – for successive fours in the 22nd over, Pakistan’s run rate had crossed six an over never to come back down again. Those two shots summed up the touch play this partnership relied on: first a mere push between mid-off and extra cover, and then waiting for the expected flatter delivery and back-cutting it between point and short third man.Utseya managed to get both the openers out, but looking at how Malik and Sohail went he must be wishing he hadn’t. It was Malik in this partnership that made a slow start, but from the moment he skipped out and lofted Sikandar Raza for a straight six in the 33rd over, he galloped along. With Malik looking in rare touch, Sohail could take it easy and settle in. As with Hafeez and Azhar, it was more about clever placement and missing the infielders rather than manic hitting for Malik.Forty-one came off the Powerplay, and at 263 for 2 in 40 overs Pakistan were set to break the Lahore record of 357, what with 10 an over in the last 10 almost the norm in modern ODI cricket. Except Pakistan are one of the teams that usually buck the trend. Not here. In Malik and Sohail they had right amount of placement and power, in Zimbabwe they had a flat attack, and the two carried the party on. Clean hits cleared the fence, mis-hits fell to ground, Zimbabwe missed quite a few yorkers, the fielding was poor, and 112 came off the last 10. In the 49th over Malik raised the first international century in Pakistan in six years. Sohail, who relied on some power hitting over the leg side in his 89 off 66, ran out of time, but time was a bigger problem for Zimbabwe who were about 40 minutes behind schedule in finishing their 50 overs. They didn’t show much more urgency in the chase, looking for the most part content with batting out the 50 overs of their own. Chigumbura and Masakadza added 124 for the third wicket, but they did so in 20 overs, which meant the asking rate had reached 14.5 for the last 17. Chigumbura, who survived a plumb lbw shout and benefited from two dropped catches, brought brief interest to the chase. He raced away to a maiden ODI century, in the process hitting Sami for a hat-trick of fours and then for 22 in another over. Wahab, though, proved too good for him, troubling him with bouncers before cleaning him up with a quick yorker, and ending the game in the process. Pakistan, though, will be worried at how ineffective their second string of bowlers were.

Younis happy to draw level with Bradman

Younis Khan said that the Bangladesh decision to field was a good call as the pitch had some early help for the bowlers, but then it flattened out to aid strokemakers

Umar Farooq in Dhaka06-May-2015In the Khulna Test, Younis Khan had to wait for 71.5 overs for his turn to bat, but in Dhaka he had to come out in the 23rd over after Pakistan lost both openers for 58. However, Younis’ 148 that came in a little over three hours drove Pakistan into a position of advantage by the end of the first day. It was Younis’ 29th hundred, the same as Don Bradman.”It’s always good to stand equal with the likes of Bradman,” Younis said. “I am happy that I am still going on and scoring hundreds. If I was able go back and start my career again I would want to score hundreds at the average of Bradman and it could have been more satisfying for me.”Along with Azhar Ali, Younis put up a partnership of 250 runs for the third wicket. Both had looked uncomfortable early on and played out the first hour watchfully before finding fluency. Younis strike rate was brisk as he completed his half-century in 72 balls, and reached the hundred-mark in 142 balls. Frequently using the sweep, Younis scored 100 of his runs on the leg side.”I always insisted on building partnership and players like Azhar are the future of Pakistan cricket,” Younis said. “We chat a lot in the middle, rotate strike and allow each other to establish and with bigger partnership, the chances of win increase.”Younis said that the Bangladesh decision to field was a good call as the pitch had some early help for the bowlers, but then it flattened out to aid strokemakers.”Pitch was supporting both the bowlers and the batsmen and if you play properly you have a chance to score big,” Younis said. “The outfield was slow and if you bowl with pace and in good areas, there was some help definitely. We saw it worked well for them in the first hour.”The decision to field wasn’t bad. With grass on the pitch, captains want to make use of the moisture and it went well for them. The way they bowled the first few overs, they got Hafeez, who was in a very good nick, but when a partnership started to build for us they lost their way.”But Bangladesh bounced back strongly in the previous Test and it won’t be easy for us going forward. The first session (tomorrow) is crucial again and we got to have enough runs to put them under pressure.”Younis did provide a chance to Bangladesh. On 78, he was caught at short cover off Soumya Sarkar, but the replays showed the bowler had overstepped. After that lucky break, he went on to complete his fifth century in seven Tests. He was on 78 when he scoped it straight at short-cover to be caught but on reviewing the foot no ball by the third umpire, he got a luck lifeline. He was ‘lucky’ to have a chance to covert the inning into yet another hundred as this is his fifth hundred in last seven Test matches.A Younis century usually bodes well for Pakistan: Fourteen of his hundreds have comes in Pakistan wins.”It’s always good to have a chance,” Younis said with a smile. “I was in mood to score big and when you are at 70-odd runs it great to have a chance like that to convert the score into a century. It worked for me and I grabbed it.”

Kusal left out for NZ tour; Kulasekara recalled

Kusal Perera has been omitted from Sri Lanka’s squad for the one-day series against New Zealand, as they continue to search for a stable opening pair, while seamer Nuwan Kulasekara has been recalled

Kusal Perera has been omitted from Sri Lanka’s squad for the one-day series against New Zealand, as they continue to search for a stable opening pair, while seamer Nuwan Kulasekara has been recalled. Lasith Malinga has also been included and, as the coach Marvan Atapattu said recently, is expected to make his comeback from injury in the latter part of the seven-match series.Kusal has played 41 ODIs but has failed to secure his place alongside Tillakaratne Dilshan at the top of the order. In the recent series against England he scored 99 runs in five matches, including two ducks, following a poor tour of India.Sri Lanka one-day squad

Angelo Mathews (capt), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Lahiru Thirimanne, Dinesh Chandimal, Dimuth Karunaratne, Jeevan Mendis, Thisara Perera, Suranga Lakmal, Lasith Malinga (subject to fitness), Dhammika Prasad, Nuwan Kulasekara, Rangana Herath, Sachithra Senanayake, Shaminda Eranga

He was left out of the final two matches against England, with Mahela Jayawardene promoted to open, and Dimuth Karunaratne, who scored his maiden Test century in Christchurch, has been preferred in the 16-man squad. It means Dilshan could have his fifth opening partner in three series if Karunaratne is preferred to open ahead of Jayawardene.Angelo Mathews, the Sri Lanka captain, has previously been a supporter of Kusal but towards the end of the series against England there was a hint that patience was running thin. “We’ve given opportunities to Kusal,” he said earlier this month. “He’s fared pretty well, I thought, in a couple of games. He could have done better. We expect a lot from him because he is a good player. We’ve got nine more games to try and experiment with the opening slot.”Kulasekara missed the England series – his most recent ODI was when Rohit Sharma made 264 and he took 1 for 89 off nine overs – but produced some solid returns for Colts in Sri Lanka’s domestic 50-over tournament before Christmas.Meanwhile, Malinga is on track to return during the New Zealand series following ankle surgery. Shortly after Sri Lanka arrived in the country, Atapattu ear-marked the final two matches for his return as he builds up to the World Cup.The final World Cup squads need to be named by January 7 which means Sri Lanka will need to confirm their 15-man combination before the one-day series begins.

Tendulkar wants 'standardised' DRS

Sachin Tendulkar says he supports the use of technology in international cricket as long as a uniform referral system is implemented across the world. The DRS has been a controversial topic when it comes to India considering the BCCI has adamantly refused to use it in bilateral series.Tendulkar has said in the past that he supported the referral system as long as both Hot Spot and Snickometer were used in tandem. But N Srinivasan, the ICC chairman and the suspended BCCI president, had told ESPNCricinfo last year that India’s position on the DRS had always remained consistent, and called it a “faulty” system. “If India plays, DRS is not there, and if two other teams play and they want a faulty system, why should I stop it?” Srinivasan had said in the interview in October 2013.But Tendulkar said the technology need not be perfect as long as the ICC could “standardise” its implementation. “I don’t know right now what BCCI’s stance is. From an individual point of view I can definitely say that we can’t have bits and pieces in different, different parts of the world,” Tendulkar said in London on Friday. “One part of the world is using Snickometer. The other part of the world is Hot Spot. Somewhere else we are using something else. It’s got to be standardised.”Incidentally, most of India’s senior players, barring the captain MS Dhoni, have supported the DRS despite its inconsistent nature. Currently DRS is used only when there is a bilateral agreement between boards. Srinivasan has been stubborn in his resistance, saying resorting to referrals was just a gamble. “There are a lot of things wrong, apart from the technology – even the two referrals, the one referral in an ODI, how does it help? So there’s that luck element, and this was my position and it remains.”Tendulkar recognised that technology could never be perfect, but stressed it needed to be consistent. “Why should we settle for only 50% result? Why not get as close to 100%? It is impossible to get 100% right. There will be some errors here and there. It really does not matter if Zimbawe and Bangladesh are playing or England and Australia are playing. An international match is an international match. It is unfair on lesser teams who do not have the full package. We can definitely use technology as long as it is standardised.”Tendulkar expressed those views at the UK launch of his autobiography: , at Lord’s in the company of former England captain Nasser Hussain. Always viewed as reluctant to make his thoughts public, Tendulkar has become more forthright, particularly over the past week during which he has spoken openly about his differences within India’s dressing room with former coaches and team-mates.Asked to rate the favourites for next year’s World Cup Tendulkar had a ready response. “I can’t pinpoint one team, but there are a few competitive teams. I would like to name Australia, South Africa. New Zealand is a dark horse. India. These are my four semi-finalists.” Prompted to talk about England’s chances, Tendulkar said Alastair Cook’s team was not the strongest. “I don’t think so, sorry. Anything is possible in sport. But going by current form I don’t think England would be that competitive.”Tendulkar was more positive about India’s chances. “India can surprise a lot of guys. And also I believe the spinners will come into play. People only talk about the pitches being conducive for fast bowlers but because of the size of the grounds I think spinners will come into play.”Tendulkar agreed with the view that playing County cricket would help India’s players become more competitive overseas. He agreed with Hussain that the experience would aid in their own development and growth not only as players but also as individuals. “Most definitely. I remember Zaheer Khan was having a lot of injuries [in 2006]. There was a period when he was away from cricket for a while. That is when I told him: “Zaheer, for you there is no off-season. Whenever the monsoons are on in India you go to England and play. You will be transformed as a cricketer.” That is what he did. I thought county cricket was instrumental in transforming Zaheer as a bowler.”Tendulkar spoke about his own experience in 1992 at Yorkshire, where he became the first overseas player to represent the county. “It was a turning point in my career because it not just taught me more about the conditions but also taught me a lot as a person. To be able to travel around on my own in England at the age of 19 was an experience; not many 19-year-olds get to do that. I thoroughly enjoyed my stint at Yorkshire. Right from the president of the county to the groundsman were all supportive and welcoming. I can never forget that experience – the warmth and reception I got.”

Knights success not a surprise – Sodhi

Ish Sodhi, the Northern Knights legspinner, has said that the performances of his side in the Champions League T20 were along expected lines after their intense preparations before the tournament

While most of the attention in the Champions League T20 has been on the IPL franchises, Northern Knights have emerged as the team to beat after dominant performances in the qualifiers and a comprehensive victory in their first group game. The results may have surprised a few people but Ish Sodhi, the Knights legspinner, insisted they were the outcome of the team’s intense preparations in the run-up to the tournament.”We haven’t surprised ourselves at all. We have been preparing hard for this tournament for a long time,” Sodhi told ESPNcricinfo. “Most of our players had been busy playing some tournament or the other before we came here. And then we had an intense weeklong preparatory camp in Bangalore, which helped us get the best combination going. All sorts of combinations that we have tried have worked for us.”After thumping their opponents, including defending champions Mumbai Indians, in the qualifiers, Knights carried the form into the group stage and beat Cape Cobras in their first match. The core players – Kane Williamson, Scott Styris, Trent Boult and Tim Southee – have made crucial contributions, while others like Anton Devcich have supported their efforts well. Williamson has been the standout performer for the team, with 220 runs in four games, including a century [the fastest in CLT20] and two fifties and Sodhi said Williamson’s 49-ball 101 against Cobras was a “wonderful knock, especially with all the clinical strokes he played all over the ground”.If Northern Districts sign off their prolonged stay in Raipur with a fifth consecutive victory, against Hobart Hurricanes, they will boost their chances of making it to the knock-outs. Since 2011, when the qualifying stage was introduced to the Champions League T20, no team starting in the qualifiers has won the tournament. Sodhi said Knights were not too worried about that trend.”It’s too early to think about it. All that we are thinking is to keep delivering the way we have been and the results will follow,” he said. “We have a protocol of not thinking too much about the future.”In the last year, Sodhi has played eight Tests and two T20Is for New Zealand but has not yet cemented his place in the team and his bowling average of 47 in first-class cricket and 46 in Tests has come under scrutiny. The India-born spinner, however, said he was not bothered too much by criticism against him.”I think criticism is always going to be there. It’s not been that difficult to deal with and I don’t start to lose my sleep over it,” Sodhi said. “Hopefully I can continue and keep doing the things that I am and improve my stats. What matters more is what my team-mates think in the nets, more than anything else. That [criticism] doesn’t really bother me.”Sodhi admitted he is still a long way from becoming a “finished product” as a bowler and cricketer and hoped he could accomplish that goal over the next few years.”Being a part of three Test series victories, winning the Twenty20 competition with my domestic team and now being here for the Champions League has surely helped me start understanding my game a little bit better each day,” he said. “I am looking forward to keep improving and I hope I can be a finished product as a bowler and as a cricketer. It will not come for another few years.”

Coles helps Hampshire to third win

ScorecardKyle Abbott started the Leicestershire collapse on day four•PA Photos

Matt Coles starred with bat and ball as Hampshire returned to the top of Division Two by skittling Leicestershire for just 96 on the final day at Grace Road to complete a comprehensive 278-run win.Coles, who joined Hampshire initially on loan in the second half of last season, plundered 30 more runs in quick time the final morning, then claimed 3 for 24 with the ball as the Foxes slipped to a first defeat of the season with the kind of batting collapse that blighted their 2013.Hampshire had briefly been replaced at the top of the table when Worcestershire completed a three-day victory over Essex on Tuesday, but leapfrogged their promotion rivals after claiming 22 points from this match.Leading by 342 overnight, Hampshire elected to bat on first thing on Wednesday morning, Coles striking some lusty blows to extend his tally to 83 – his highest first-class score since 2012 – and the lead to 374 before being stumped by Niall O’Brien off the bowling of Jigar Naik. That prompted visiting captain Jimmy Adams to declare, setting the Foxes 375 for victory from a minimum of 91 overs but more realistically the task of batting out the day for a draw. But they could manage only 31.4 overs as Danny Briggs took four wickets in his first Championship appearance of the season.Leicestershire took 21 from the first two overs but were quickly in trouble as Kyle Abbott struck twice in as many balls at the start of his second over. Angus Robson edged behind for a duck to a delivery that rose sharply, then South African Abbott trapped Ned Eckersley leg before first ball.Leicestershire captain Ramnaresh Sarwan made 15 before being deceived by James Tomlinson’s change of angle – the left-armer coming around the wicket and pinning Sarwan lbw.Briggs extracted sharp turn from the slowing fourth-day wicket – one ball spinning past first slip for byes – before Josh Cobb missed one coming forward to fall lbw for four.Coles then wrecked any remaining ambition the home side might have harboured by taking two wickets in the last over before lunch. First O’Brien fell to a brilliant return catch by the bowler, then Rob Taylor became the fourth player to be out for a duck in the innings when his thin edge down the leg side was taken by tumbling wicketkeeper Michael Bates. The procession of wickets continued after the break; Coles snaring opener Smith lbw for 39 and Briggs having Naik caught at second slip by James Vince.England left-arm spinner Briggs then bowled Anthony Ireland and Nathan Buck to wrap up proceedings and finish with figures of 4 for 13, leaving Leicestershire winless in the Championship since September 2012.
