Liverpool will need luck on their side for a seventh Champions League triumph

Twenty-six teams qualify for the Champions League Group Stage, but only one can go on to win the trophy. Liverpool were that side in the 2018/19 season, overcoming Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid to lay claim to Europe’s biggest prize for a sixth time.

Jurgen Klopp’s Anfield natives will need luck on their side once again if they are to make it lucky number seven, though, as the Reds are currently seen as the underdogs, while their Premier League nemesis Manchester City get the backing of Sports Betting Dime and Sporting Life.

The Champions League has not been favourable for the Etihad Stadium side in recent years, and it remains the one trophy to escape their clutches, despite dominating the English landscape to become the first men’s side to record a domestic treble.

Liverpool know all about suffering heartbreak on the continent, too, having seen their hopes of a sixth European crown shattered in Kyiv, when Loris Karius had a night to forget. But dropping the German for Brazilian summer signing Allison Becker changed the Reds’ luck for the better, and Klopp finally held aloft his first major trophy in charge of the Merseyside outfit.

The Reds still had to ride their luck during their mission to Madrid, mind, as Paris Saint-Germain and Napoli were thrust into their path in the Group Stage. Bayern Munich and Barcelona then followed, with their clash in Catalunya leaving their dream in tatters.

No one would have expected what was to come on May 7, as a Divock Origi double inspired one of the greatest comebacks of all time, to send Lionel Messi’s Barcelona crashing out of the Champions League in shambolic fashion.

Yet one fairy-tale moment was not enough, as Tottenham travelled to Amsterdam the following night chasing a one-goal deficit, and things only got worse when Matthijs de Light and Hakim Ziyech fired past Hugo Lloris. Pochettino’s men would stun the giant-slaying youth of Ajax, though, as Spurs clawed their way back into the tie with Lucas Moura catching the hosts cold, only to better his efforts as stoppage-time expired to shatter the local’s hearts.

But it was not to be for Spurs, as Liverpool went on to lift the trophy in Madrid thanks to a Mohamed Salah penalty and a late strike by Origi. They now have to wait until September before they can go again, and face an even greater challenge to reach back-to-back Finals.

Their opposition in last year’s Round of 16 Borussia Dortmund are one of many European heavyweights to strengthen this summer, with Julian Brandt and Thorgan Hazard brought to the Signal Iduna Park for less than they sold fringe star Christian Pulisic to Chelsea for. The Bundesliga runners-up are also slightly favoured by Sports Betting Dime in the stakes, whilst narrowly falling short of German rivals Bayern Munich.

Bayern last won a continental honour in 2013, and even the work of Guardiola failed to see the Bavarian side add their number six. Niko Kovac is in charge now, and has brought youth and talent to the Allianz Arena to replenish an ageing defence in Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard. Liverpool had the better of them in last season’s Round of 16, and they will be longing for better results in the future alongside Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona.

PSG are desperate to take a European honour to justify their high-spending summers acquiring the likes of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, but the Champions League is the one competition their money cannot conquer, and Thomas Tuchel will be getting hot under the collar if they collapse on the continent again following March’s debacle at home to Manchester United.

The German will have to hope his luck is in, even if it means hitting the market again to find the winning formula. One that was evidently not there against the Red Devils.

Fans can test their luck throughout the tournament, as well, by backing the side they feel can go on to lift the trophy in Istanbul, and not just through traditional bets, but football-themed online slots. It is always best to find new slots sites through websites which compare different bonuses, though, as they provide a wider range of choice and the best rewards. And who knows, you too could be celebrating the result in Turkey, like Chelsea were in Azerbaijan when they lifted the Europa League.

The Blues are now chasing a new manager following Maurizio Sarri’s return to Italy, though, yet cannot be ruled out from putting on a show in the Champions League once they find their next leader.

A show is always guaranteed when it comes to the 13-time Champions League winners Real Madrid, who were a shadow of themselves in their latest quest having lost Cristian Ronaldo. But a new Los Blancos is on the horizon as young superstar Luka Jovic descends on the Santiago Bernabeu alongside Ferland Mendy and the £150million man Eden Hazard.

Europe has been where Real Madrid have shown their true colours in three of the past four seasons, and cannot be overlooked when it comes to their chances of adding a 14th crown to their collection.

Manchester City may be the favourites, but the Citizens’ struggles to turn domestic dominance into continental glory will ensure there is no easy ride for Guardiola and his men. It is the missing piece of their masterpiece, and one that needs to be filled sooner rather than later, yet it could easily continue to be a black hole with so many giants standing in their way.

Liverpool, too, once again face a mountain in front of their European mission, and it will be no easy route to another Champions League triumph. Klopp has the winning ingredients in his locker, but will have to play his cards right to see the desired results again. One thing’s for sure, though, the Champions League will be full of fireworks once more.

Transfer Focus: Spurs interested in signing Leicester star Maddison

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Leicester City attacking midfielder James Maddison this summer, per Football.London.

What’s the word?

Spurs are attempting to sign their first player since January 2018 this summer.

They have been linked with a number of midfield players and the aforementioned report claims that both Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele, of Real Betis and Lyon respectively, are targets.

However, they also state that Spurs hold a “big interest” in Maddison, who enjoyed an exceptional season at the Foxes in 2018/19.

He scored seven goals and registered seven assists in the Premier League but the report claims Spurs do not believe that he would be affordable in this transfer window.

A major mistake

Spurs were linked with a swoop for Maddison last summer, when a number of clubs circled the Norwich City star.

A Daily Mirror report claimed at the time that the Canaries had slapped a £25m asking price on their prized asset.

He ultimately moved to Leicester for a fee of around £20m, as Spurs kept their powder dry.

Now, he may well be worth treble that after a season in which he took to the Premier League like a duck to water, with the report from Football.London claiming his displays may have put him out of range for the Lilywhites.

He has been called up to the England squad, though he is yet to play, and has dazzled those at the King Power Stadium with his dribbling and his eye for goal.

Indeed, Maddison’s WhoScored stats show that he averages 2.8 key passes per game along with 1.4 dribbles and 2.3 shots.

Christian Eriksen, by comparison, averages 2.1 key passes, 0.5 dribbles and 2.4 shots.

He may have been regarded as something of a punt last summer but Leicester are now reaping the rewards; Spurs, meanwhile, are being punished for their inactivity.

Pundit View: Noel Whelan’s worries about Kemar Roofe are well-founded

[ad_pod ]

Speaking to Football Insider, Noel Whelan has expressed concerns that Kemar Roofe could be on his way out of the club this summer.

The former Leeds player is worried that Roofe’s agent could turn his head this summer and push him out the door at Elland Road.

What’s been said then?

The 44-year-old believes that the Whites’ top scorer could be swayed into leaving the club in the upcoming transfer window.

“If the player wants to leave, then there is a good chance he will,” Whelan said.

“The agent will be whispering in his ear and thinking about the pound signs.

“He will be telling him he can double his salary at a new club this summer, or he can see out his contract and get a bumper deal and signing-on fee next year, with Leeds losing out on a £10million transfer fee. That would be terrible business for Leeds.”

Right to be concerned

Whelan has every right to be concerned about this one. Phil Hay has previously speculated that the 26-year-old will want a hefty payrise so that he earns as much as Patrick Bamford, but if Leeds are unwilling to offer that type of pay packet, he could be tempted to leave.

Footballers have short careers, and with Roofe well and truly in his prime, he will want to earn as much money as he can and play at the top level.

Last year he proved that he is one of the most effective strikers in the Championship, and if a Premier League team come calling he may not be able to afford to turn them down.

Aston Villa are reportedly interested in the striker. His departure would certainly sting Whites fans, but you can’t blame him for wanting to capitalise on his rising stock after an incredible season.

The Chalkboard: Liverpool caught out by Manchester’s City’s irrepressible pace

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool beat Huddersfield Town 5-0 to return to the top of the Premier League on Friday but their destiny remains out of their hands.

Manchester City face Burnley on Sunday and a win would see them return to the top, in this, the most pulsating of seasons.

On the chalkboard

The Reds moved onto 91 points as a result of their victory on Friday.

Such is the irrepressible pace of this title race, City can leapfrog them and move onto 92 points if they beat the Clarets.

With two games of the season remaining thereafter, City can reach a maximum of 98 points. Liverpool can reach 97.

That would have won Liverpool the league in all but one Premier League season – 2017-18 – when City reached a century.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have already bettered the tally of Manchester United’s treble winners, by 12 points. They are already one clear of Arsenal’s Invincibles of 2003-04. Sir Alex Ferguson’s United side, that won three Premer League titles on the trot between 2006-07 and 2008-09 never topped 90 points.

United in 1993-94 collected 92 points, Chelsea in 2004-05 collected 95 and then picked up 93 in 2016-17. All three of those tallies will be beaten if Liverpool win their remaining two games.

Throughout this season, they have scored 84 goals and conceded just 20. Only four teams have scored more – United’s 1999-2000 vintage scored 97, Chelsea in 09-10 scored 103, City in 13-14 scored 102 and then topped that with 106 in 17-18. More impressively, only one side have conceded fewer than 20 goals across an entire season, Chelsea in 04-05. Two clean sheets in the run-in is not difficult to foresee, with Liverpool facing Newcastle and Wolves.

The Premier League, then, is constantly evolving, and Liverpool could become the very best runners-up of all time. Indeed, no runners-up have ever collected more than 89 points, since United saw City win the title in final minute of the 2011-12 season.

Right team, wrong time

This Liverpool team is electric.

They are absolutely brilliant in both attack and defence and yet they could end the season empty-handed.

That speaks to the talent of Pep Guardiola’s City side, who have set an astonishing pace.

It is remarkable that Liverpool have lost just one game all season and yet could be runners-up to a team that have been beaten four times.

The target now, it seems, is to get as close to 100 as possible. Liverpool can’t do that this season, nor can City, but the target has been set and the Reds are mightily close.

It feels as though they are simply the right team – Anfield has been crying out for a genuinely world-class team, to thrill and excite again – at the wrong time.

They are up against Guardiola’s side and there will be no shame whatsoever in finishing second to perhaps the best team English football has ever seen. The stats, though, paint a rather depressing picture; if only Klopp had arrived earlier, perhaps Liverpool would have already won that elusive Premier League title.

Man United fans starting to change their tune on Solskjaer after Barcelona loss

[ad_pod ]

When Manchester United announced on March 28 that they had appointed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on a permanent basis following a successful period in caretaker charge, the following Red Devils fans were clearly delighted.

It would be fair to say things haven’t really gone to plan for the Norwegian in just under three weeks since then though, with their 3-0 Champions League quarter-final second leg defeat against Barcelona on Tuesday night their third loss in their previous four matches in all competitions.

It was also their fourth successive defeat away from home – the first time that has happened since Solskjaer was playing for them in 1999 – as the cracks begin to appear.

Selecting a clearly out-of-sorts Ashley Young backfired as his mistake led to Lionel Messi’s opener for the La Liga leaders, while previously in-form players such as Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford are now struggling.

Things need to turn around quickly if they are to secure qualification for Europe’s elite club competition next season, as they currently lie two points outside of the top four in the Premier League standings.

Man United supporters on Twitter were certainly beginning to question their manager via social media during their most recent defeat, to suggest some are already changing their tune and doubting the decision to keep the 46-year-old on.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Liverpool: The Premier League title will go to the wire, and Reds aren’t slipping up anytime soon

Another Premier League weekend and neither Manchester City nor Liverpool blinked yet again in the race for the title, but it’s safe to say the Reds had the better time.

City had to rely on goal-line technology to seal a narrow 1-0 win against Burnley at Turf Moor whilst Liverpool absolutely decimated Huddersfield 5-0 in one of their most comfortable performances of the season and a result that hugely benefited their goal difference in the league table.

If you were to look at the two performances, Liverpool’s thumping win compared to City’s narrow victory is something that can give Reds supporters some belief going into the final games of the season, and if you are to genuinely ask neutrals which team look more likely to slip up in the remaining matches, Manchester City would be the most common answer.

With the Premier League title race heading right down to the wire, it’s looking likely that Liverpool are for once not going to be the side that slip when the pressure mounts with each passing game, and Jurgen Klopp’s side can benefit from this.

Journalists and fans are already acting like City have already retained the title, yet from what we have seen this season Pep Guardiola’s side have a mistake in them and had to rely on technology to get the win against Burnley.

Liverpool will need some luck from City’s final opponents if they are to win the Premier League, but one thing is for certain, the Reds will be confident in themselves to get their end of the bargain done and hope the likes of Leicester and Brighton surprise the league with an unexpected result.

Liverpool fans, will the Reds win their final games of the season? Let us know!

Newcastle United: James Ward-Prowse surely the ideal Mike Ashley buy

Newcastle are looking more likely to be plying their trade in the Premier League again next season, after another post-Christmas magic trick performed by Rafa The Great.

There are many comparisons between this season and last, but the one constant is that neither would have been possible without their Spanish wizard Rafa Benitez.

It is imperative that the club convince him to sign a new contract at St James’ Park, and they should be pulling out all the stops to do so.

The best way to extend his stay is to let him know that their vision for the future matches his.

One way to do that is to make signings that are a statement of intent.

The Newcastle transfer blueprint has long been known — buy talent under the age of 25, and see their value increase as they are nurtured by one of the best coaches and tacticians in the game.

While this philosophy has some merit, it is which talent they bring in that will ultimately prove whether it works or not.

This summer sees Newcastle likely to lose Mo Diame on a free, Jonjo Shelvey for a modest fee and Isaac Hayden, who has requested a move all season for family reasons.

With a midfield overhaul on the cards, Newcastle will need someone to partner their academy graduate, and now key member (when fit) of their midfield, Sean Longstaff.

James Ward-Prowse would be the perfect fit for Newcastle and their transfer policy. He is 24-years-old, English and a rising star in the Premier League — as recognised by his call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad this week.

Southampton are still in serious danger of going down, and with Ward-Prowse now getting a sniff of international football, he will surely not be keen on playing Championship football, should the worst happen to the Saints.

He has scored six goals in 21 appearances for the South coast club this season, and his ability to control games from the middle of the park is exactly what Newcastle need.

The last time Newcastle made (and tried) such an ambitious signing was Shelvey himself back in 2016 from Swansea – prizing a talented fairly young England international from a fellow Premier League struggler – and look how well that turned out.

Why not give it a go? With talk of a potential marquee signing coming in (as per the Chronicle) to appease Benitez, a player of Ward-Prowse’s profile would be excellent.

What would you make of Newcastle bringing in a player like James Ward-Prowse? Would he be the perfect fit? Let us know what you think…

Marcel Brands must seal shock deal for Fekir

It’s safe to say that Marco Silva hasn’t really made the most of his resources in the current campaign as his team selection continues to raise eyebrows. Indeed, leaving Richarlison on the substitutes’ bench is something that’s starting to get on the nerves of supporters.

The Merseyside club will inevitably already have one eye on the summer transfer window after struggling for consistency for large parts of the current campaign.

According to Calciomercato (via HITC), Everton are interested in Lyon’s Nabil Fekir.

Interestingly, Lyon president Jean Michel Aulas told Telefoot this week that the French side could be forced to sell Fekir in the summer with one of he or Houssem Aouar expected to leave the Stade OL.

Indeed, the France international has established himself as one of the hottest topics in Europe in recent years and it’s safe to say that he has all the ingredients to become a superstar. He could produce plenty of fireworks in the Premier League and he still has his best years ahead of him, so the sky is the limit.

Fekir has produced 12 goals and seven assists in the current campaign and he’s not even hit top form, so that just goes to show how special he really is. His explosive power on the ball and incredible finishing ability could help cure the Toffees’ attacking woes and he has the vision to improve Everton’s productivity in the final third.

Bringing him to Goodison Park would be a complete shock as he’s been linked with Real Madrid, Spurs and Liverpool already this year. The fact that the Toffees are currently struggling in the race for a European spot adds to the shock, as it would take a miracle to persuade him to join a club who could fail to secure a place in Europe. Marcel Brands could pull off an unbelievable piece of business with his value at £63 million (by Transfermarkt) as well.

Everton fans, do you think you could lure Fekir to Merseyside? Surely it’s going to be near enough impossible in the summer…
