Malik does a U-turn on Shoaib

Two days after seemingly calling time on Shoaib Akhtar’s international future, Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik has backtracked on his views that the team needed to “move on” beyond the fast bowler, who lacked commitment during their 129-run defeat to Sri Lanka in the second ODI at Karachi.Malik had called into question Shoaib’s commitment in the field and his fitness in maintaining speeds over ten overs. But ahead of the final ODI in Lahore, Malik surprisingly denied he had singled out anyone.”I don’t get personal against anyone,” he said. “I don’t think I named anyone individually. I definitely spoke about whoever could not field for 50 overs. It could be me or anyone who is selected in the 15-man squad.”Malik acknowledged that Shoaib’s lengthy absence from international cricket – he got his first taste of one-day cricket in 14 months during the two games in Karachi – had played a part in his sluggishness. Shoaib, who bowled only 13 overs, conceding 88 runs and taking only one wicket, also looked limited while fielding.”He is definitely struggling to get back into rhythm after spending so much time on the sidelines,” said Malik. “But he is the same Shoaib who used to run through batting line-ups in one spell of bowling.”Cricinfo has learnt that Malik’s initial comments had the backing of members of the team management. In discussions thereafter, with the management and selectors, Malik is said to have once again made clear his original views on Shoaib’s commitment. However, it is believed that senior board officials have chided Malik for his comments during the middle of a series, which would explain the subsequent backtracking in Lahore.Shoaib has so far refused to respond to the statements but appeared jovial during training before the series decider, joking with Muttiah Muralitharan and reporters.

It has not been a particularly encouraging day for cricket’s minnows. First Bangladesh were routed by an innings-and-129 runs in Bloemfontein while, in Harare, Zimbabwe capitulated to their fourth-lowest ODI score of 67 against a clinical Sri Lanka who, with depressing inevitability, are heading for a 5-0 series win.It was Zimbabwe’s second collapse in three days. They lost their last seven wickets for three runs in the first ODI, and showed no sign of improving today as Ajantha Mendis took 4 for 15, taking his series-tally to seven.Farveez Maharoof’s three early wickets helped reduce Zimbabwe to 34 for 4, a position from which they were ill-equipped to recover, particularly with Muttiah Muralitharan and Mendis yet to bowl. Tatenda Taibu, playing in his 100th ODI, dropped anchor in an attempt to stabilise a listing ship, but he became Mendis’s first victim when he misread a straighter delivery which shot through his defence. That he top-scored with 12 tells the sorriest of tales.Elton Chigumbura lasted 27 balls before he too was beaten by Mendis’s clever arm-ball. At 48 for 6, Zimbabwe were sliding fast, and Thilan Thushara grabbed two wickets to ensure there were no tail-end frolics. Mendis wrapped things up with his fourth wicket, that of Sean Williams, the returning allrounder, as Zimbabwe crashed to their fourth-lowest total in one-dayers.Sri Lanka took their time chasing 68, and Zimbabwe’s bowlers did their best to gloss an otherwise dismal performance. After eight overs they had Sri Lanka 20 for 1 – Mahela Udawatte drove loosely at a fine outswinger from the economical Tawanda Mupariwa – but, that small blemish aside, Sri Lanka cruised home. Kumar Sangakkara carved five crunching fours in his unbeaten 28 – three in one over off Chigumbura – and was well supported by Upal Tharanga’s 29.To compound Zimbabwe’s depression, an ICC fact-finding delegation are currently in Harare to assess their suitability for returning to Test cricket. On the evidence of the first two matches, they are barely fit to play ODIs.

Rangers predicted XI against Dundee Utd

Rangers head into their second fixture of the new Premiership season looking to make it two wins out of two, but manager Steven Gerrard will be without several key players for their trip to Tannadice.

Both Ianis Hagi and Joe Aribo missed the Gers’ midweek defeat to Swedish outfit Malmo in the first leg of their Champions League third-round qualifier through injury, and the pair are expected to remain on the treatment table in today’s early kick-off.

Alfredo Morelos is set to join them on the sidelines as he searches for match fitness following his return from Colombia, while key midfielder Ryan Jack is still a few weeks away from a return to action.

“We will be without Ianis Hagi. Roofe is available to return to the group. Kamara will return to the squad. Morelos is available but he will need a couple of sessions on his return. Ryan Jack will be another couple of weeks all being well,” Gerrard revealed in yesterday’s press conference.

The positive news surrounding Kemar Roofe and Glen Kamara, who also missed Tuesday night’s defeat through European bans rather than fitness concerns, will be a big positive for Gerrard, though.

With that in mind, we take a look at how the Gers could line up against Dundee United this afternoon, with three changes from the midweek defeat in Sweden…

Gerrard looks set to rotate his goalkeepers between domestic and European games, so Jon McLaughlin should come back into the starting XI for this one.

The back four is likely to remain unchanged from Rangers’ midweek exploits, although there’s expected to be some alterations in the middle of the park.

Kamara will almost certainly return from the off against the Tangerines, leading to Steven Davis taking a place on the bench, with the ageing £18k-per-week maestro unlikely to be able to play two games in such quick succession.

Summer signing John Lundstram and experienced campaigner Scott Arfield should complete the Rangers engine room.

In attack, Ryan Kent is likely to be accompanied by former Aberdeen winger Scott Wright after the 23-year-old made a fast start to life at Ibrox with a goal against Livingston, and the returning Roofe could get the nod over Cedric Itten and Fashion Sakala up front.

Bobby Duncan set to leave Derby County

Derby County striker Bobby Duncan looks set to leave the club this summer, according to an update from journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Duncan struggles at Derby

The 20-year-old joined the Rams on a three-year deal last summer, but has struggled to make his mark at the club.

Duncan made seven appearances for Derby’s Under-23 side, failing to score a single goal, and didn’t play once for the first team in the Championship.

The Latest: Striker set for exit

According to O’Rourke on Twitter on Tuesday, Duncan is in Denmark looking to complete a summer move to Vejle Boldklub.

It isn’t stated whether or not the potential move would be temporary or permanent, but given Derby’s use of him, it could well be the latter.

The Verdict: Career stalling

Duncan’s career has stalled badly after being seen as such a bright emerging talent at Liverpool, leaving on bad terms to join Fiorentina and not kicking on ever since.

For his sake, a move away from Derby could do him the world of good, with the youngster in need of playing regular football and finding his feet again – an inferior league could help him find his form.

His exit could hopefully generate some modicum of transfer funds for Wayne Rooney if it is a permanent deal, should the Rams’ transfer embargo be loosened.

In other news, some Derby fans have bemoaned an update regarding manager Wayne Rooney. Read more here.

Wolves: Atletico eye Rafa Mir

Atletico Madrid are considering a move for Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Rafa Mir, according to Spanish newspaper AS (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

Mir has only ever made four senior appearances for Wolves, and none of those have come in the Premier League. He spent the 2020/21 season on loan at La Liga outfit Huesca, and even as they unsuccessfully battled relegation, he netted 13 goals.

That’s as many as Barcelona’s Antoine Griezmann, who moved to the Camp Nou for a full £107m, could manage.

Mir, who will represent Spain at the Tokyo Olympics, has one year left on his contract at Molineux and is valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt.

The latest

AS claimed(via Sport Witness) that Atletico have been admirers of Mir for a ‘long time’ and could escalate their interest. They are looking to sign a striker who can provide cover and competition for Luis Suarez.

It’s not just Atletico in the frame, though, with Mir’s exploits at Huesca apparently catching the eye of ‘multiple teams’, but Diego Simeone’s side could look to tap into their ‘great relationship’ with Wolves after they struck deals for Diogo Jota and Jonny Castro Otto.

The verdict

New Wolves manager Bruno Lage has shown a preference for a 4-4-2 formation. If he adopts that shape at Molineux, you’d think the returning Raul Jimenez would guaranteed one of the two starting spots given his goalscoring record prior to fracturing his skull.

Does Lage go with teenager Fabio Silva, or consider bringing Mir back into the fold? The latter’s goal return was impressive considering Huesca’s struggles, but it should be noted that he considerably under-performed on his xG tally of 16.5.

Perhaps Wolves should look at that concerning figure and take what could be their final opportunity to cash in on Mir, whose stock is quite high after a prolific season.

In other news, Wolves are expected to bid for another young forward.

Pundit tips Vieira to bring aggressive style to Crystal Palace

Marcus Bent expects Patrick Vieira’s aggressive playing style to rub off on his Crystal Palace players.

Vieira has taken over as the Eagles’ new manager, succeeding former England boss Roy Hodgson on a three-year deal.

The Frenchman made his mark in the Premier League during a trophy-laden spell with London rivals Arsenal, with his tough-tackling and leadership qualities being a key reason for the Gunners’ success under then-chief Arsene Wenger.

Vieira, who captained Arsenal during their Invincibles campaign in 2003/04, has inherited a threadbare Palace squad after a large number of last season’s squad saw their contracts expire.

As a result, Vieira will have the chance to develop a new-look outfit and instil his philosophy at Selhurst Park.

Vieira’s appointment comes after being sacked as Nice’s boss last December, following a five-match losing streak.

But Bent, who featured for Palace during the early days of his playing career, feels Vieira will make Palace a tough team to beat if he can keep Wilfried Zaha on board and make some key signings.

The former striker exclusively told Football FanCast: “I think the players Palace have got are aggressive. They have always been a tackling side that likes to put their foot in. It’s been cultured into them since when I was there. It’s a club where you wear your heart on your sleeve and make sure you make a tackle.

“That was Roy Hodgson’s style of play in a sense. Now I think it’s a style of play where Vieira can implement his traits. Wilfried Zaha, going forward, is skilful and a little bit like Thierry Henry, who Vieira played with for Arsenal and France. Maybe Vieira can bring Zaha into a different world of his own if he doesn’t move.

“Vieira needs those sorts of players to stay and bring players in to help him. The back four are solid to a certain extent but it depends on whether they can tweak it a little bit to have a good squad and season.”
