Better contracts, no discrimination, open transfers: Bangladesh players' demands

A look at some of the most critical demands made by Bangladesh’s male players ahead of their strike that began on Monday

Mohammad Isam21-Oct-2019At the heart of the Bangladesh players’ discontent that led to the boycott, is their financial situation: Six out of the eleven demands made by the players are for better pay in some form or level of cricket. The BCB, the players feel, has squeezed their income through salary caps, drafts, and other restrictive practices. There are three major sources of income for the professional Bangladeshi cricketer – the Dhaka Premier League, Bangladesh Premier League and the National Cricket League. The fourth source, the BCB’s central contract for the national team, is the most lucrative, but it is only for a handful. Here are the key financial demands made by the players, and their rationale for those demands:Open market transfer in DPLThe DPL is the highest level of the four-tiered Dhaka league structure. Originating in the early 1960s, it provides opportunities to the maximum number of players and is considered the country’s top domestic competition. It had always operated in an open market system for the players’ inter-club transfer, meaning a player was free to choose which club they wanted to play for and to negotiate their pay for the season.Since Nazmul Hassan became BCB president seven years ago, though, apart from one season, the BCB has used a draft system in which clubs have chosen their players, with a salary cap for each category. For the 2018-19 season’s Dhaka Premier League, the board had set a draft with different categories that paid cricketers between BDT 3.5 to 35 lakh (approx. USD 2,700 to 27,000). Seven years ago, the market was – at a conservative estimate – between BDT 5 to 60 lakh (approx. USD 5,900 to 70,000).Hassan’s board agreed with the clubs’ complaints that players were demanding too much money, even though the board already subsidises the clubs’ operations. Most of the BCB’s members and directors are from these Dhaka clubs, which hold a huge say in the board’s matters.Return of the franchised BPL The BPL, which began in 2012, has had its share of difficulties with payment but it was a godsend for domestic players at a time when the DPL clubs were already applying the squeeze through BCB. Even though salaries were delayed in the first couple of seasons, there was a measure of regularity since 2015.The problem here is the difference in salaries between Bangladeshi and foreign players. Most overseas players get a much higher valuation in the draft, even though local cricketers like Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah and Mashrafe Mortaza have been the BPL’s top performers.

In the 2019 BPL, Mushfiqur earned between USD 47,000 to 88,000 after being put in the A+ category. The same category for the overseas players – which included Shahid Afridi, Imran Tahir and Evin Lewis – was for USD 200,000. The rest of the categories, too, see huge differences – up to five times – between the domestic and foreign players. The demand, read out by Mushfiqur, was for domestic players’ payment to be closer to that of overseas players. Also for every player to be able to decide which category he wants to be in, like other franchise-based T20 leagues.First-class squeezeOne of AHM Mustafa Kamal’s last contributions as BCB president was to fix a monthly stipend for 105 first-class cricketers. The salary was paid in three categories, in which players got between BDT 15,000 to 25,000 per month. This salary remains the same even today, while they have reduced the number of players from 105 to 70.Match fees are a bargain too, as they get BDT 35,000 (approx. USD 413) per match, and the daily (BDT 1,500 = USD 17) plus travel allowance (BDT 2,500 = USD 29) is not enough.Shakib said on Monday that the match fees should be at least BDT 100,000 (approx. USD 1,180), while cricketers must be given more money for food and assurance of an airline ticket rather than find bus and train routes to reach first-class venues.More players, better pay in central contractsThe sixth point, read out by Enamul Haque jnr, was to increase the number of centrally contracted players to 30, and for the retainers to be hiked. Currently, the best-paid player in Bangladesh, in the A+ category, earns USD 52,500 per year after tax. It has been the same since 2017 when the salary was increased for the last time. The amount, as reported two years ago, remains one of the lowest player central contract in world cricket. Bangladeshi cricketers are paid less than that of Zimbabwe’s and Ireland’s, leave alone Sri Lanka, West Indies or other Full Members.Interestingly, the players didn’t demand a percentage of the BCB’s revenue, sponsorship, broadcasting or the amount provided by the ICC each year, as happens in some other countries.

Michael Slater retains World Cup commentary role after flight altercation

ESPNcricinfo understands he was spoken to by host broadcasters and reminded of the behavioural standards all commentators must uphold

Daniel Brettig24-May-2019Michael Slater, the former Australia opening batsman and now commentator, will be heard on Channel Nine’s World Cup broadcast after the ICC confirmed he remains a part of the world broadcast feed for the event, due to begin on May 30.Following a highly publicised incident on Sunday when Slater was escorted from a Qantas domestic flight from Sydney to his hometown of Wagga Wagga, after becoming embroiled in a heated argument with two female fellow travellers, ESPNcricinfo understands he was spoken to by host broadcasters and reminded of the behavioural standards all commentators must uphold. However, Slater is set to return to Australian television screens with Nine, his former network, as well as Fox Sports, the pay television broadcaster that will air all the tournament’s matches. Nine has the free-to-air rights to screen Australia’s nine round-robin matches, plus the semi-finals and tournament final at Lord’s on July 14.Last year Slater moved from Nine to Seven, following the latter’s winning of broadcast rights for matches in Australia in a combined deal with Fox Sports worth A$1.18 billion to Cricket Australia. A central figure in Seven’s broadcast, particularly for the Big Bash League, Slater did not continue his role throughout the summer, missing from the back-end of the season and the BBL finals series in early February. It is believed this decision was made mutually between Slater and Seven for personal reasons, though he is still under contract with the network for another season and may yet return.Since then, Slater has commentated on the Indian Premier League, and will soon be heard again on Nine and Fox Sports for the World Cup. In a statement to , a contrite Slater confirmed the incident on the plane: “I did have an argument with two friends whilst boarding a flight to Wagga and I apologise for the inconvenience this caused other passengers on the flight.”Nine, which lost its rights as the host broadcaster for Australian cricket for the first time since Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket breakaway more than 40 years ago, will ironically broadcast the returns of the previously banned Steven Smith and David Warner in the wake of the Newlands scandal, after Seven and Fox Sports suffered by their absence over the 2018-19 summer. The network’s World Cup coverage will be hosted by Rebecca Maddern, alongside former national team captains Mark Taylor, Ian Healy and Lisa Sthalekar.Seven recently unveiled the former New Zealand captain and Brisbane Heat batsman Brendon McCullum as a new addition to its commentary team for next summer. McCullum will also be heard on the World Cup broadcast.

Farke could land dream Ampadu partner in Leeds swoop 5 ft 11 "machine"

Leeds United have the opportunity to bolster their playing squad this month as the January transfer window officially opened for business last week.

It is not easy to get deals over the line at this time of the year as teams may not want to part ways with their top talent midway through a campaign.

This means that the Whites could find it difficult to improve their team immediately with permanent signings, which opens the door to the loan route.

Chief executive Angus Kinnear revealed back in October that the club had deliberately left two loan spots free ahead of the January window to do business this month.

ByLuke Randall Feb 1, 2024

Two has since become three as Leeds decided to exercise a break clause in Djed Spence's loan from Tottenham Hotspur, which sent the defender on his way back to the Premier League side.

Leeds could, in theory, bring in three more players on loan to add to the group and one star who could arrive in such a move is Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos.

Leeds transfer news – Andrey Santos

The Whites have recently been touted with a possible swoop to sign the Brazilian prospect on loan until the end of the season from the top-flight outfit.

Speaking on CaughtOffside's YouTube channel earlier this month, journalist Ben Jacobs claimed that Leeds could be in the race to land his signature before the end of the window.

The reporter stated that Premier League side Crystal Palace are also interested in a deal to land the former Vasco da Gama star this month.

Jacobs also named Ipswich Town, who are currently second in the Championship and ahead of Daniel Farke's men, as a team to watch out for in regard to Santos' immediate future.

The central midfielder looks set to be available after Chelsea decided to recall him from his loan with Nottingham Forest during the first half of the campaign.

Andrey Santos in action for Brazil

Santos was one of 14 first-team signings for the Tricky Trees last summer and found game time difficult to come by in Steve Cooper's bloated squad.

The young talent played 12 minutes off the bench against Liverpool in October 2023 and that was his only Premier League appearance for Forest in his short time there.

His failure to establish himself as a regular in the top-flight suggests that a loan down to the Championship would be a logical next step for him in his development.

Playing week-in-week-out in the second tier could help Santos to push on and then be ready to make the step up to top level football next season.

Farke must now push for the club to secure a deal for the talented youngster, who showcased his potential in Brazil, as he could be a dream partner for Ethan Ampadu in the middle of the park as an alternative option to Glen Kamara for the German head coach.

Ethan Ampadu's season in numbers

The Whites splashed out an initial fee of £7m to sign the Wales international from Chelsea on a permanent deal last summer and he has been a terrific addition to the squad.

Farke has relied on the defensive midfielder week-in-week-out in the Championship as he has selected the impressive ace in every single match so far this season.

Leeds midfielder Ethan Ampadu.

Ampadu has started all 26 of the club's league matches and averaged 90 minutes played per match, which illustrates how important he has been to the side.

The 23-year-old enforcer was not given a rest against Peterborough in the FA Cup and proved his worth to the team once again with two goals and one assist in a 3-0 win.

It has been the other side of his game, however, that has caught the eye this season. Ampadu has been a superb defensive screen in front of the back four for Farke.

As you can see in the table above, the former Chelsea starlet has been an above-average performer in the Championship in terms of the defensive actions he makes per 90.

His 1.5 interceptions per game in the league also tops the Leeds squad and this highlights how important the gem has been to the defensive structure with his ability to cut out opposition attacks on a regular basis.

The statistics that show why Leeds should sign Andrey Santos

Farke could now land a dream partner for Ampadu by striking a deal to sign Santos as the Chelsea youngster can provide combative performances alongside him whilst also being able to carry an attacking threat.

Glen Kamara has been an impressive performer in midfield for Leeds but has never scored more than three goals in a league season and is yet to get off the mark for the club.

Andrey Santos Chelsea

Santos, who talent scout Jacek Kulig once hailed as a "pressing machine", has the potential to offer more at the top end of the pitch to provide the Whites with a boost in the final third.

The 19-year-old whiz produced two goals and one assist in five matches at the U20 World Cup for Brazil last year and caught the eye with eight goals and four 'big chances' created in 33 Serie B games for Vasco da Gama in 2022.

These statistics suggest that the teenage dynamo could chip in with goals, whilst also being able to create chances for his teammates, from a defensive or central midfield position, which is something Kamara and Ampadu – with zero league goals this term – do not offer.

As you can see from the table above, Santos, who was once described as "wonderful" by Kulig, also has defensive quality and could provide steel in the middle of the park to go along with his attacking prowess.

No Leeds player has made more than 2.4 tackles per match in the Championship this season, which suggests that the 5 foot 11 gem could be an outstanding performer at both ends of the pitch for Leeds if he can recapture that form from 2022.

He could, therefore, be a dream partner for Ampadu by being able to break forward from midfield to make an impact in attack whilst also having the defensive quality to sit in alongside the Welsh ace to shut out opposition teams.

AB de Villiers' 50-ball ton wipes out Dhaka Dynamites

The former SA batsman strung together a devastating stand of 184 with Alex Hales to lift Rangpur from 5 for 2 and see them home in 187-run chase with ten balls to spare

The Report by Peter Della Penna28-Jan-2019

How the game played outThe Rangpur Riders runaway train whistled past Dhaka Dynamites at breakneck speed in a thumping eight-wicket win with 10 balls to spare. AB de Villiers and Alex Hales were joint conductors during a rollicking 184-run partnership, the highest of BPL 2019. De Villiers, who had simmered in his first two innings of BPL 2019, finally exploded for a 50-ball unbeaten century, while Hales clubbed 85 not out off 53 balls, including the winning runs.Rangpur’s rampaging Powerplay, which they ended on 63, made the Dynamites effort look tame by comparison, especially considering that the Dynamites took until their 21st ball to score a boundary after having chosen to bat first. The early crawl cost them on a batting paradise that produced two centuries on the day, first from the bat of Evin Lewis of Comilla Victorians in the afternoon’s first game, before de Villiers capped off the night with his match-winning ton for the Riders.Turning points Shakib Al Hasan was scoring at over 200, but went too far across his stumps while attempting to scoop Farhad Reza in the 12th over, to be bowled for 25. Reza pulled off his second dramatic catch of the day in the 14th over, running 20 yards left at deep midwicket, before extending his body full tilt and hurling himself to clutch onto a skier from Andre Russell just inside the boundary. After Russell dismissed Chris Gayle and Rilee Rossouw in the second over, de Villiers hooked the hat-trick ball for six, and then proceeded to torch Shakib, Russell and Sunil Narine for 22 more off his next seven balls, all of them through boundariesStar of the dayDe Villiers showed why he’s a modern great with a typically audacious counterattack. He didn’t flinch in hooking Russell first up, and never looked back thereafter. He took 24 balls to reach his half-century, and another 26 to reach three figures in a chanceless effort, all while the Chattogram crowd chanted “A-B! A-B!”The big missPerhaps sensing the need to have a big finish on a flat pitch, Dynamites allrounder Kieron Pollard decided before the start of the 20th over that he would face everything. While he hit two boundaries against Shafiul Islam, he also turned down three singles, before chipping a yorker for one off the innings’ last ball, failing to provide the desired boom at the end of the Dynamites innings.Where the teams standRiders moved into a three-way tie for first place on 12 points with Comilla Victorians and Chittagong Vikings, though Riders hold the edge over both on net run rate. Dynamites remain tied for fourth with Rajshahi Kings on 10 points, but Dynamites have a game in hand as well as a massive net run rate advantage.

Arsenal’s £280k-p/w star dropped a "monster performance" vs Luton

And breathe. Arsenal's match with Luton didn't look like a classic on paper but it gave us one of the most memorable games of Premier League football we'll see all season.

It was an end-to-end thriller at Kenilworth Road as the Gunners amazingly visited a ground where they hadn't won in their last ten outings. That run looked like extending on Tuesday evening, only for Declan Rice's last-gasp heroics.

Luton were dogged and caused Mikel Arteta's men plenty of problems. Twice the Hatters went behind, only to pull things back to 3-2. They couldn't hold on, however, as the north Londoners rallied to fight back themselves.

David Raya hadn't covered himself in glory prior to that, failing to claim a corner and ending up in no-man's land for Luton's second, before allowing Ross Barkley's shot to squirm under him for the third. It's safe to say Arsenal's goalkeeper debate isn't dying down anytime soon.

Fortunately, Kai Havertz was on hand to prod home and then Rice was there at the death to score a late winner in particularly remarkable fashion.

Declan Rice vs Luton Town in numbers

How many times are Arsenal going to score late winners this season? A week and a half ago Havertz arrived right on cue at the back stick to rescue all three points at the death against Brentford.

This time out, it was Rice – scorer of another late goal against Manchester United earlier in the season – who performed the vital rescue act.

With the clock ticking into its 98th minute, Martin Odegaard swept a ball into the area. The £105m summer signing got ahead of his marker and rose highest to glance the ball into the bottom corner. Cue pandemonium in the away end as Rice and his colleagues dashed off to celebrate moving five points at the top of the league.

The former West Ham man's performance was about much more than his goal, however.

Rice is certainly a man of the big occasion and he rose his performance level to an incredibly high level in Luton on Tuesday, winning four of the eight duels he contested during the encounter.

Furthermore, the England international made seven ball recoveries – the highest of anyone in Arsenal colours – and nine passes into the final third. That stat was only bettered by Odegaard for Arteta's side.

It was a titanic performance from a player who since signing a few months ago has very rarely delivered a bad moment.

That said, there was another in fluorescent colours who deserved just as much praise; Havertz.

Kai Havertz vs Luton Town in numbers

At long, long last Havertz has arrived at Arsenal. During the opening few months of the campaign, debate was rife as to why exactly the Gunners had spent £65m to acquire him from Chelsea.

Indeed, prior to the November international break, the German had only found the net on one occasion, from the penalty spot against lowly Bournemouth.

However, since the break ended, the £280k-per-week midfielder has revived his career in some style.

That late winner against Brentford appears to have kickstarted his time at the Emirates, notably then scoring against Lens in the Champions League a week later.

He then netted his third goal in four games versus Luton on Tuesday, scoring a vital third strike in the tie. Bukayo Saka looped a ball forward which Gabriel Jesus was then able to manoeuvre into the path of Havertz. His finish was simple but tidy, steering it into the net from close range.

Like Rice, though, the German's display was about more than his goal. Arsenal reporter Connor Humm suggested it was a "monster performance" and that it was from a player who won ten duels throughout his time on the pitch, the most of any Gunners player.

The league leaders weren't shy of chances but his four key passes, as per Fotmob, happened to be the second-most of any Arsenal man, behind only Jesus and Odegaard with five each. Coincidentally, those two were the only players from the visiting side to have more touches in the opposition's penalty area than Havertz.

Truth be told, Arsenal did get away with it against the Hatters. Offensively, they were at their best but defensively it was a night to forget. Either way, Arteta will have to take the positives, and Havertz was certainly one of them.
