Tahir's dream debut halts Northants

The pick of his strokes a thunderous drive through cover point. He shared 79 in 9.3 overs with Michael Lumb as Notts extended their unbeaten run in all competitions against Northants to 15 matches. The win kept up Notts’ pursuit of a home quarter-final with Northants made to wait before confirming their place in the knockout stages.Victory was lead by Tahir in the first innings after Notts won the toss. He appeared to have a mesmeric hold on the Northants batsmen as first Steven Crook, lbw trying to sweep, Alex Wakely, lbw playing back, and then Richard Gleeson, tamely chipping to midwicket, all fell in a superb spell. In partnership with Samit Patel – whose own 2 for 27 in four overs was excellent – the spinners helped collapse the Northants innings from a strong Powerplay of 59 for 1.The innings had lurched to 107 for 5 before Mullaney was introduced in the 15th over – his second ball brought a return catch from Ben Duckett – the left-hander falling for 29 in 23 balls ended any chance of Northants posting a competitive total. The lower order then fell away as Northants left 10 balls unused having lost 9 for 62 in 12 overs. It was a remarkable turnaround after Richard Levi and Adam Rossington had given the home side a bright start having lost the toss. Levi lifted two sixes over square leg to ruin Harry Gurney’s second over, another followed in the sixth over but the reintroduction of spin brought his undoing with Patel winning an lbw decision with Levi well placed 35 from 20 balls.Rossington began with a carved drive over point for four and added a second boundary with a sweetly timed straight drive. But he fell in the final over of the Powerplay, swinging at Jake Ball and losing his middle stump for 22 from 15 balls. It was a sign of things to come from the hosts’ batting.

Allardyce Could Unleash "Class" £5m Leeds Teen

Desperate times call for desperate measures, with Leeds United having made the decision to appoint Sam Allardyce – who has been out of work for almost two years – in order to help secure their Premier League survival.

Despite having already parted ways with Jesse Marsch earlier in the campaign, the Whites have opted for one more roll of the dice by showing Javi Gracia the door, with the club still in a perilous position with just four games of the season left to play.

With the end of season fast approaching, the incoming Englishman will have little time to work his magic in an attempt to revive the struggling Elland Road outfit, with it yet to be seen whether it is merely a case of too little too late in the bid to stave off the drop.

The 68-year-old will be taking charge of a side that is currently on a run of five league games without a win following the weekend defeat away to Bournemouth, with the current crop of senior stars having undoubtedly been well below-par of late.

With that in mind, it may be wise for Allardyce to turn to the Yorkshire side's pool of exciting youngsters in order to find a potential relegation solution, with 19-year-old Darko Gyabi seemingly one such talent who could provide a much-needed lift the floundering first-team.

Who is Leeds United's Darko Gyabi?

With Leeds having forked out around £5m to sign the highly-rated teenager from Manchester City last summer, the England U19 international has gone on to feature just three times at senior level since then, having rather bizarrely been overlooked by both Marsch and his successor.

Despite a potential slot in the squad having emerged amid Tyler Adams' injury woes, the departing Gracia has still favoured a midfield pairing of Marc Roca and Weston McKennie in recent times, despite the latter man, in particular, having looked "out of his depth", according to pundit Jon Newsome.

Signed on an initial loan deal from Juventus in January, McKennie has been unable to have the desired impact at Elland Road thus far, with Newsome also stating the game merely "passes him by", such are his woes.

Leeds United's Darko Gyabi

The United States international can "comes across as lazy" and "look slow" when he's "not playing well" – as per transfer insider Dean Jones – with those shortcomings having been evident against the Cherries last time out, as the 6 foot dud was a 'complete passenger' according to Leeds Live's William Jackson.

As such, there is nothing really to lose from giving young Gyabi a chance to shine moving forward, with the London-born gem having shown his quality in the youth ranks so far this season, notably contributing two goals and three assists in 17 Premier League 2 games.

The exciting talent only recently 'showed his class' in the defeat to West Bromwich Albion's U21 side – as per Jackson – having also been branded as "class" by journalist Joe Donnohue after putting in the "most complete midfield display" of any Leeds player "at any level" this season against Derby County back in March.

While there's no guarantee that the former Etihad starlet would be able to replicate such standout displays amid an intense scrap for survival with the first-team, the woes of McKennie and co should ensure that Allardyce at least contemplates a promotion for the youngster.

Liverpool: Klopp pushing for Milner deal

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is personally pushing the board to offer James Milner a contract extension, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Out of contract

The Premier League giants have Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita, Arthur Melo, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Adrian all out of contract this summer alongside the 37-year-old.

The Reds midfielder is the most experienced player at Anfield having served 21 seasons in the English top-flight, but with age and experience eventually comes the end of a career, when the physical side of things becomes too much to handle.

The Mirror recently reported that England’s former international has the ball in his court when it comes to deciding whether to put pen to paper on fresh terms, but it would appear that the boss has already made his stance crystal clear.

The Latest: Milner set to stay?

According to Football Insider reporter Pete O’Rourke, Klopp is ‘pushing the board’ to place a new deal on the table for Milner at the end of the season.

The German is claimed to be a ‘huge admirer’ of his veteran and is trying his best to get the hierarchy to ‘replicate’ the one-year extension offer that was made to him last summer.

The Merseyside manager views his star’s on and off the field presence to be ‘crucial’ to his side’s dressing room atmosphere and thinks it would be a ‘huge loss’ should he depart.

Negotiations are ‘yet to be opened’, but it’s stated that FSG are ‘optimistic’ that an agreement can be reached should talks eventually take place.

The Verdict: Fully deserved

Milner has been dubbed a ‘workhorse’ by journalist Leanne Prescott and Liverpool offering him an extension would be nothing less than he deserves, even despite his age.

The Wortley-born talent has clocked up 72 goal contributions in 321 Anfield appearances, with this being the club he’s spent the longest period of time at throughout his career (Transfermarkt).

The Reds talisman is also strong in the defensive aspect of his game, where he currently ranks in the 92nd percentile for most blocks and the 86th percentile for most tackles made per game (FBRef).

Manchester City’s former ace offers excellent versatility having already operated in five different positions this season whilst doing an impressive job at right-back when filling in for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Finally, Milner is Liverpool’s vice-captain and possesses some amazing leadership qualities alongside Jordan Henderson, so it would be a massive coup should they get him to commit his future.

West Ham: Predicted XI vs AEK Larnaca

West Ham will be looking to seal their spot in the Europa Conference League quarter-finals when they take on AEK Larnaca at the London Stadium this evening.

David Moyes' side lead 2-0 after their win in Cyprus last week and are comfortable favourites, despite their disappointing form in the Premier League so far this campaign.

How should West Ham line up vs AEK Larnaca?

Although the Hammers don't have a Premier League game this weekend due to Manchester City's progression in the FA Cup, Thursday still represents an opportunity for Moyes to unleash some of the academy talents and fringe players available to him at the London Stadium.

Here is how Football FanCast expects West Ham to line up on Thursday evening, with eight changes from the team that started against Aston Villa over the weekend.

With Lukasz Fabianski still sidelined through injury, Alphonse Areola looks likely to keep his place in goal, and the Frenchman will no doubt be targeting another clean sheet against the Cypriot minnows this evening.

There are three changes in defence, as only Kurt Zouma keeps his place as the former Chelsea man continues to regain his match fitness following his injury problems.

Nayef Aguerd is rested with Angelo Ogbonna replacing him in the heart of the defence, while Ben Johnson and Aaron Cresswell are handed starts at right-back and left-back respectively, with Thilo Kehrer and Emerson dropping out.

Declan Rice might be West Ham's best player, with Moyes labelling him an "exceptional" talent earlier in the season, but if there were any game to rest him for, it would be this one.

This frees up 18-year-old academy talent George Earthy to start alongside Tomas Soucek in the middle of the park, with the 18-year-old boasting four goals and eight assists in just nine appearances in the U18 Premier League this season.

Forgotten men Pablo Fornals and Manuel Lanzini are also given a chance to impress after underwhelming league campaigns which have returned just one goal and one assist between them, while Maxwel Cornet also earns a start after returning from his long-term injury in recent weeks.

Finally, Gianluca Scamacca starts as the lone striker, in what could be one of the last chances for the former Sassuolo man to win over Moyes, with the Italian having dropped down the pecking order at the London Stadium following a series of poor performances, as well as the January addition of Danny Ings.

Liverpool had a transfer howler on Carroll

Liverpool have earned an exemplary reputation for their transfer business since the arrival of Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards at Anfield, with the combined elite football brains developing and building one of the most successful teams in the world over the last half-decade.

The Reds have enjoyed success across the board with their fantastically assembled Anfield powerhouse with the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup won since the 2018/19 season.

Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Fabinho, Roberto Firmino and Georginio Wijnaldum are just a handful of the players who have become household names since their arrivals on Merseyside, all becoming trusted components under Klopp during his reign at Anfield

However, carefully crafted and well-thought-out transfer business hasn’t always been the culture for the Merseyside giants, especially when a short period of transition in the early 2010s became a memory that many Liverpool supporters try to etch from their memory.

The January 2011 transfer window is fondly remembered for the arrival of arguably one of Liverpool’s best players in the Premier League era when Luis Suarez came to Anfield, but it will also be one to forget with the £35m signing of Newcastle United’s highly-rated young striker Andy Carroll.

It was nothing short of a disastrous panic buy after selling Fernando Torres to Chelsea on deadline day and will forever haunt Carroll’s short-lived legacy at the club, with the mid-season swoop being voted the worst-ever signing in Premier League history during a survey in 2022.

Despite penning a five-and-a-half-year deal, the striker only made 58 appearances for the Reds, scoring 11 goals and registering six assists until he was finally offloaded just two-and-a-half years later when he joined West Ham United for £15m – a huge £20m loss on what Liverpool had paid the Magpies.

Where is Andy Carroll now?

Since his move to east London in 2013, the former England international has become a journeyman in the aftermath of his six-year spell with the Hammers.

Carroll – who Scott Groom suggested was the Reds’ “worst” signing – went full circle to make a shock return to his boyhood club Newcastle after becoming a free agent in 2019 and going without a club for the start of the 2021/22 season. That has been followed by a stint at West Bromwich Albion and two spells at Reading, for whom he currently plays in the Championship.

It’s safe to say the now 34-year-old never reached the heights in his career that he would’ve hoped, with his failure to prove himself at Anfield the catalyst in his footballing misfortunes.

However, the player has spoken out and hints that he doesn’t regret his transformation from hometown hero to generational flop, saying: “Listen, I would have rather stayed at the time and all the way to the helicopter I’m thinking, ‘What is happening? What am I doing?’. But looking back, and how it shaped me as a player and a person, I would honestly still do it. I probably needed to get out of the city to grow up.”

With that being said, the former recruitment team at Anfield will probably not carry the same sentiment in hindsight, and the signing of Carroll remains a transaction over which Liverpool and their supporters will have nightmares.

Leeds interview Nuno Espirito Santo

Leeds United have interviewed former Wolves and Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo ahead of a potential return to the Premier League.

The Lowdown: Skubala and co

The Whites haven’t been able to bring in Jesse Marsch’s long-term successor, which has left Michael Skubala, Chris Armas and Paco Gallardo in caretaker charge.

The trio took both fixtures against Manchester United last week and will continue to lead the first team for the club’s upcoming fixtures. That leaves Leeds still on the search for a new manager, with Nuno seemingly still of interest to those at Elland Road.

The Latest: Nuno update

The Times shared a story on Tuesday regarding Leeds and a new manager, claiming that Nuno has been interviewed for the role and “is a surprise contender to return to England with Leeds”.

No offer has been made to the 49-year-old yet, with the report adding Leeds will need to pay Saudi club Al-Ittihad £5.3 million in compensation to extract Nuno from his contract.

The Verdict: Get it done?

Nuno, who likes to play a 4-2-3-1 system, has plenty of experience in England, something that could come in extremely handy in the final games of the season with Leeds currently in another relegation battle.

In total, he has won 210 of his 427 games as a manager, with 48 victories coming in the Premier League. He may not have been the club’s top target from the off, but you could argue that Leeds could do a lot worse than Nuno at this moment in time, despite the fact they’d have to pay a relatively large fee for his services.

Chelsea should’ve sold Conor Gallagher

In January, Chelsea had one of the most incredible, record-shattering transfer windows of any club in the history of football, comprehensively rewriting the script at the club and continuing a lucrative spending spree since Todd Boehly assumed ownership less than a year ago.

Indeed, since the opulent American businessman took control of the Blues, he has spent approximately £545m, with the £52.4m release clause of RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku having also been met.

Despite this remarkable outlay, Chelsea have been rather modest with their outgoings, with roughly £60m collected through player sales, and the squad at Stamford Bridge now requires some considerable trimming.

Despite selling 31-year-old Jorginho to Arsenal for £12m – an admirable deal considering that his contract was set to expire at the end of the campaign – there must now be an emphasis on relieving the Blues of squad excess to make way for further incomings in west London over the summer.

One player who was subject to attention in the closing stages of the January transfer window is Conor Gallagher, with Chelsea’s industrious midfielder of interest to the likes of Everton before the deadline, with the Toffees having been willing to pay £45m for the 22-year-old.

The end of the season might offer Chelsea a more feasible opportunity to sift through the ranks and highlight players who are deemed expendable, ready to move on and continue the systematic restructure at the club. However, Blues boss Graham Potter should still have pushed to let Gallagher leave, especially given the amount that Everton were willing to play for someone who hasn’t been a fixed presence at Stamford Bridge.

The midfielder has made 25 appearances this season, although he has only started nine of the Blues’ 20 games in the Premier League and might find his game-time further restricted following the £107m signing of Enzo Fernandez, with N’Golo Kante also expected to return to full training this month following his lengthy hamstring injury.

The £17k-per-week ace’s quality was on full show following a successful loan spell with Crystal Palace last season, where he served as a focal point for the Eagles and forged an impressive Sofascore rating of 7.08, scoring eight goals and supplying three assists to complement his 81% pass success rate and match averages of 1.1 key passes and two tackles.

While there is no questioning that the 22-year-old is a talented and diligent figure who could continue to blossom into a reliable player as he nurtures his way into prominence, it looks increasingly unlikely that Chelsea will offer him the platform that he requires in order to truly flourish.

Technical director Christopher Vivell was also actively pursuing a move for Brighton & Hove Albion’s Moises Caicedo, who was subject to a £55m bid from Chelsea in the days leading up to January transfer deadline day, with the Seagulls starlet burgeoning into one of the Premier League’s most capable pivots, a position that Gallagher also likes to occupy.

SunSport remarked in a recent Twitter post that Gallagher is a player who “struggles for Chelsea minutes”, and despite his evident quality, the chances that he will fit into Potter’s first-choice XI become more tenuous by the week, especially given the relentless pursuit of fresh options by Boehly, who ought to have cashed in on the England midfielder last month.

Everton rejected by Marcelo Bielsa

Everton owner Farhad Moshiri held talks with Marcelo Bielsa about taking over as the club’s new manager, but the Argentine is believed to have turned down the opportunity.

The Lowdown: Lampard sacked by Everton

After a run of seven losses in his last eight competitive games, Frank Lampard was dismissed as manager on Monday, with Paul Tait and Leighton Baines being placed in temporary charge of training until a permanent successor is found.

The Toffees are 19th in the Premier League table with more than half of the season now gone, so it is absolutely critical that Moshiri gets his next appointment right, and he is reported to have held talks with Bielsa about the vacant role.

The Latest: Bielsa snub Everton approach

It was claimed that the 67-year-old is the first choice of all the available candidates, as Everton officials believed that the Argentine’s attack-minded football philosophy could have helped galvanise the team in the second half of the season.

However, Football Insider reported on Tuesday morning that he has now turned down Everton’s advances, in what is a significant blow to their pursuit of a new manager.

The Verdict: Blow for Everton

It would’ve been ideal for Everton to appoint a manager with an attacking focus, given that their record in front of goal this season has been very poor, scoring the joint-second fewest goals of any team in the top flight.

Also, the former Leeds United manager has previously enjoyed success in English football, taking the Whites up from the Championship in 2020 and keeping them in the top flight with an impressive ninth-placed finish in their first season back at the highest level.

Bielsa has been spoken about in glowing terms by many people in the game, with Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone stating that his compatriot taught him “the most” of any manager, while Fernando Llorente has labelled his former Athletic Bilbao boss a “genius”.

It is of the utmost importance that the Everton hierarchy make the right decision with their next managerial appointment, and they could now turn their attentions to other proven Premier League coaches, including the likes of Sean Dyche and Nuno Espirito Santo.
