A guide to every chip on Fantasy Premier League (2024/25)

As a Fantasy Premier League manager, you have plenty to think about, from planning your squad in pre-season to selecting a starting XI, picking a captain and making transfers each week.

However, there are also a number of chips that can be used throughout the FPL campaign which can earn you more points or transform your squad, and a brand new Assistant Manager chip has recently been revealed for 2025.

But how and when can you use the new chip and all the rest that are available? Football FanCast takes a look at all the FPL chips and what they mean.

Players with the most FPL bonus points this season

Bonus points are a key feature in FPL, but which players are the best at picking them up?

ByBarney Lane Nov 1, 2024 Bench Boost

There is nothing worse than having loads of points left on the bench while your starting squad fails to perform. However, the ‘Bench Boost’ chip allows you to earn those points at one point during the season.

Should you activate it before the gameweek, the points scored from your benched players will be included in your total points score, with many FPL bosses waiting until later in the season for a double gameweek to activate the chip.

The 10 most popular FPL players this season

Here are the players everyone has picked for their fantasy teams this year.

ByBarney Lane Oct 31, 2024 Free Hit

Had enough of your team and want to change it up completely for one gameweek only? Then the ‘Free Hit’ chip is what you’re after.

If you have a number of injuries, suspensions or tricky-looking fixtures in your squad, then you can make unlimited transfers without losing points for one gameweek.

Again, double gameweeks are a decent time to deploy the Free Hit chip. Alternatively, some weeks see only a few teams in action, usually when cup commitments clash with Premier League weekends. A Free Hit could come to your rescue if most of your squad becomes unavailable.

Triple Captain

As you’d expect, the ‘Triple Captain’ chip results in your captain scoring triple points for one gameweek only.

Man City superstar Erling Haaland has been the go-to skipper for FPL bosses so far in 2024/25, scoring a number of hat-tricks early in the season.

However, holding on to your Triple Captain chip for the final stages of the campaign can also pay off, especially if there is an eye-catching double gameweek for your star man.

Every Premier League club's penalty-taker

Here’s who you can expect to be lining up from 12 yards.

ByBarney Lane Nov 15, 2024 Wildcard

The ‘Wildcard’ chip is arguably one of the most important in FPL, with managers getting two to use during the season.

If you’ve had enough of your current squad, using the Wildcard allows you to make unlimited permanent transfers without suffering any points deductions.

Previously, managers would only get one Wildcard chip and one during January. This year, you can now use one before Christmas and one after 29th December.

Assistant Manager

The new Assistant Manager chip – formerly teased as the Mystery Chip – now allows FPL bosses to use the Premier League’s actual managers to get them more points.

The chip can be activated once from January and your chosen assistant will add to your points in three successive game weeks after becoming live.

However, they will come at a cost and are set to be ranged between £0.5m-£1.5m. Assistant managers will earn points for wins, draws, clean sheets and goals scored, whereas bonus points are on offer if they defeat a team ranked five places higher in the Premier League table.

Thomas Tuchel must follow Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham blueprint to get the very best out of England's most gifted player

The Three Lions manager should look to the Spanish giants and Carlo Ancelotti's tactics in order to get the best out of a truly generational talent

Thomas Tuchel's first two fixtures as England manager provided a tale of two Judes. In the first game, a 2-0 win over Albania, there was Bellingham the attacking midfielder, all drive, purpose and pace. In that one, he was a joy to watch, providing a delightful assist for Myles Lewis-Skelly and making the game look remarkably easy.

In the other, a 3-0 win over Latvia, there was Jude the box-to-box madman. He did a bit of everything, and didn't get lots of it right. Neither his effort nor his on-ball quality could be criticised. But he looked frustrated, even over-excited. A couple of silly tackles saw him fortunate to avid a red card. Tuchel admitted after that he was lucky to stay on the pitch and removed him not for his performance – but because he might be sent off.

And what to make of this? The first Bellingham is the best Bellingham in most ways – the midfielder getting into the areas he is most effective in, deadly on the ball and full of all of those creative traits that make him one of the best in the world. This was the player that carried Real Madrid in the 2023-24 season. But then there's the appeal of the second. That one might be lacking in attacking areas – or less involved – but he offers bite and tenacity in midfield, the kind of do-it-all energy that can be vital in the big games, when stakes are at their highest.

Tuchel could probably use a bit of both. But for England to be at their best – and stand a chance at the 2026 World Cup – Bellingham simply has to be given the freedom of the No.10 role he was so effective in for Madrid.

GettyA successful yet underwhelming week

Tuchel spent most of his post match press conferences talking about what England could have done better. Sure, his Three Lions won twice, scored five goals and conceded none, but the German showed no hesitation in calling out shortcomings. England didn't move the ball quickly enough. Their wingers didn't attack with any intent. There was little movement off the ball. Individual mistakes at the back – the players were never called out – led to glimpses of hope for opponents who really shouldn't have a sniff.

This is what England qualifiers look like – and have done for years. Sir Gareth Southgate was very good at qualifying. England routinely did away with the kind of teams they should beat, strolling through games and navigating the kind of easy fixtures that teams with major tournament ambitions should run away with. Someone could probably do with telling Tuchel that this is how these games are.

But that doesn't mean that the new manager can't have ideas, and some things were suggested here. The wingers stayed high and wide in both games. Lewis-Skelly inverted. Declan Rice made runs into the box. Harry Kane dropped deep and looked for passes in behind. Yes, at times, it was predictable, but it was also ultimately effective.

AdvertisementAFPBellingham, the creator, vs Albania

It's worth examining, at this point, where Bellingham was against Albania. That time, on Friday evening, he stayed high, and sort of floated between the defensive and midfield lines – not that there was much space to work with. The opponents were always going to come to Wembley and sit in a turgid, low block. Pushed away from the centre of the pitch, he did most of his work in the half spaces. He drifted left and right to receive the ball, and unlike under Southgate at the Euros, seldom got in Kane's way.

England passed Albania to death, and Bellingham played a role. He managed 102 touches, completed 92% of his passes, created two chances, and provided the assist that broke the game open. But then there were the kind of marks that reflect what the game looked like. Bellingham managed just nine touches in the Albania box, and only nine of his passes were sent into the final third. He completed just two dribbles.

And therein lies the issue with playing Bellingham so high against these teams. He's on the ball a lot, but never quite in the right area, and never quite with the space he needs to be among the world's best.

AFPBellingham, the destroyer, vs Latvia

It makes sense, then, to try him in a deeper role. It is both a curse and blessing for Tuchel that England have so many gifted attacking players who are a mix of No.10s and wingers. The list, when everyone is fit, is both impressive and exhaustive: Bellingham, Phil Foden, Eberechi Eze, Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Jack Grealish. Realistically, just one of the six can get into any given team.

Well, against Latvia, Tuchel tried two. His rationale against the more defensive – and admittedly far weaker – opponent was to play Bellingham as more of a No.8, with Rogers handed the creator-in-chief role, just behind Kane. The result was an imperfect, rather unbalanced showing. Rogers never quite found a foothold in the middle. Bellingham rather toiled in a deeper role. The groans were just starting in Wembley when Reece James curled in a free kick to make it 1-0 after 30 minutes.

Zoom out, and everything went as expected. England started poorly, won 3-0, but never really impressed. And Bellingham was at the centre of all of that frustration. Once again, he was on the ball a lot. Once again, he was efficient in his passing. From a deeper role, he was able to drive forward and, at times, find some clever angles. He created four chances this time, and a favorable bounce or two might have seen him come away with a couple of assists. But then there was the less attractive stuff. There is something to be said for tenacity, but Bellingham perhaps exercised it a bit too much. He really should have been sent off after a few silly fouls. You could see it, too, the frustration starting to boil over. It is of little coincidence that when he was removed – and the game loosened up – that England began to play.

Getty Images SportMimicking Madrid

Ultimately, this all comes down to a sense of balance. It was Southgate's downfall that he tried to fit too many good players into one team. There was no right combination, and no tactical idea that made it all work. Bellingham isn't a panacea, but he's about as close as it can get. This is not to say that it should be a case of Jude and 10 others. Ignoring the impact of Kane up front, or Rice's drive from midfield, would be silly. The same goes for Trent Alexander-Arnold's passing range from deep. But Bellingham simply has to be receiving the ball in the final third to do what he does best.

At Madrid this year, he's played sort of a hybrid role – responding to the various situations that each game brings. But for his best goalscoring period, he was playing behind a rampant front three of Vinicius Jr, Kylian Mbappe and Rodrygo. Bellingham had to do more than just create and score there – the Madrid midfield is painfully exposed due to the apathy towards the general concept of defending from their forwards. Still, he was getting into all of the right areas, while a base of Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni behind him offered a solid structure. Tuchel, with Rice and perhaps Curtis Jones deep, and Kane up front – with willing runners on either wing – might just be able to mimic that.

A aposta será justamente nessa experiência.

IPL 2022: Ravindra Jadeja to lead CSK after MS Dhoni decides to step down

Franchise confirms that Dhoni will continue to represent them “this season and beyond”

Nagraj Gollapudi24-Mar-202212:25

Jaffer: ‘Dhoni has passed on the baton to the right person’

Ravindra Jadeja will lead Chennai Super Kings in the upcoming IPL 2022, after MS Dhoni, who has led the team since the first season of the tournament, in 2008 – bar the two years when the team was banned – announced his decision to step down from the leadership position. In a statement, the franchise said that “Dhoni will continue to represent Chennai Super Kings this season and beyond”.Related

Absence of Chahar could give CSK selection headache

FAQs: Seven-day isolation for positive tests

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan said that Dhoni wanted the leadership “transition to be smooth” and felt Jadeja was ready to take up the mantle for the team, which won its fourth IPL title last year. Viswanathan said that Dhoni had announced the decision on Thursday at the team meeting before the squad left for training – the defending champions will play the tournament opener against Kolkata Knight Riders on March 26 at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.”MS Dhoni was thinking about it,” Viswanathan said. “He felt it is the right time to hand over captaincy to Jaddu [Jadeja]. He feels Jaddu is also in prime form of his career and it is the ideal time for him lead CSK. What will be good for the franchise must be [in the] back of his mind.”Jadeja, who has been with the franchise since 2012, will become the third player to lead the Super Kings side, after Dhoni and Suresh Raina.Speaking to the Super Kings’ social media team, Jadeja said, “Feeling good. At the same time, I also need to fill in big boots like Mahi , [he] has already set the big legacy so I need to carry [that] forward. I don’t need to worry too much because he is here so whatever I have a question to ask, I’ll definitely go to him. He’ll be my go-to person. He was and still he is today, so I’m not worried too much.”

Viswanathan said that while Dhoni had not personally informed him of his decision in advance, it was not a surprise to the franchise, and they had discussed the subject – the succession plan – even before the 2021 IPL and had alerted Jadeja at the time. “He [Jadeja] has been talked to earlier. Even last year, there was a proposal. We knew he would be the best person to succeed MS.”For the past two IPL seasons, there had been speculation around Dhoni’s future. Last November, at a function organised by Super Kings in Chennai, Dhoni had assured his fans that he would continue playing for the franchise for at least one more season.Viswanathan reckoned that Dhoni was waiting for the opportune time, just as he had when handing over the reins of the Indian team to Virat Kohli. “It is similar to when he handed Virat the captaincy after having groomed him for a few years at international level. Similarly, he wanted the transition to be smooth.”Viswanathan added that the franchise had immense confidence in Jadeja’s leadership. “Jaddu has the potential to do well for the franchise,” he said. “[He is a] good all-round cricketer, playing his best, he can get the team around. And MS’ guidance will always be there. This will be a good induction programme.”ESPNcricinfo LtdRecognised as one of India’s great all-format captains, Dhoni’s leadership legacy at Super Kings is similarly phenomenal. After he led India to the title at the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, former Tamil Nadu captain, the late VB Chandrasekhar, had told Super Kings owner N Srinivasan about Dhoni’s worth as a leader. Srinivasan had then asked Chandrasekhar, who was at the Super Kings table at the inaugural IPL auction, to acquire Dhoni at any cost.Dhoni has, over the years, repaid that faith with interest. In the 213 matches in which he led Super Kings – in the IPL and the now-defunct Champions League T20 – there were 130 wins, 81 losses, and, crucially, six titles: four at the IPL and two at the CLT20.Jadeja – new to captaincy, but no lack of leadership experience
As for Jadeja, he is totally inexperienced as a captain. Jadeja, 33, has never led a team at the senior level; he was the captain of an India Under-19 team in 2007.But Jadeja is recognised now as one of the finest all-format allrounders. In terms of fielding, there are few better than him in international cricket, but it his desire to keep improving that has become his biggest strength. Recently, Jadeja climbed to the No. 1 spot for allrounders in the ICC Test rankings after his match-winning performance in the Mohali Test against Sri Lanka, where he scored 175 and then returned a nine-wicket match haul. Jadeja is also in the top ten among ODI allrounders, and is also a crucial member of the T20I side.In the last two years at Super Kings, Jadeja has been the key finisher with the bat, a role that Dhoni had played for a long time. Between the 2020 and 2021 seasons, Jadeja scored 459 runs at an average of 57.37 and a robust strike rate of 157.73. That included two half-centuries, the only times Jadeja has reached the landmark in a career of more than 270 matches. During this period, he also bagged 19 wickets in 30 matches at an economy of 7.78.While he might not have clocked enough captaincy hours, Jadeja has immense experience playing alongside Dhoni at Super Kings – 131 matches, since joining the team in 2012. And that, Viswanathan said that Dhoni felt, made Jadeja the best successor for him, considering he has the heft as a player, as a leader, as an allrounder, and as a matchwinner.

Chelsea could soon unleash their incredible Cobham star over Reece James

Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea continue to soar in the Premier League, beating Leicester City 2-1 this weekend, and remaining in third place after 12 games played.

One factor that has been a heavy cause for discussion is Chelsea’s squad building in recent years, whether it was good to build a strong squad with depth, or if it was going overboard.

This Christmas period is bound to tell us a lot, with games coming thick and fast, injuries, players needing rest, and tactical decisions for many different types of games.

But right-back could be the first issue Maresca has to solve, as both his senior options missed out against Leicester, leaving Wesley Fofana to cover in that position.

Chelsea's right-back situation

Reece James has been ruled out with another hamstring injury and will undergo a scan to check the severity of his latest setback. Malo Gusto, on the other hand, missed the game against Leicester due to illness, but this shows how quickly things can change in the right-back department, with both senior full-backs missing.

Chelsea’s captain has been absent for 50 games since the start of the 2023/24 campaign, missing 38 games last season with multiple hamstring injuries (undergoing surgery for this too), and has now suffered his second hamstring injury of 24/25.

The metrics above tell us the role of a Maresca full-back, often having to contribute to all phases of play, defend 1v1s in their channel, but also often invert into midfield, help with progressive duties in the build-up, and even supply the team with creativity in the final third.

Gusto has been an extremely important part of Maresca’s system this season, playing a variety of positions, inverting into deep midfield and advanced midfield positions (sometimes as a number ten), allowing Maresca to platform his best players such as Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez in their best positions.

Malo Gusto in action for Chelsea

In the absence of James and Gusto, Fofana filled in at right-back for the Blues, putting in a strong performance and becoming that wide centre-back in possession.

This is something we have also seen from Axel Disasi this season, but Chelsea does have a special talent for this role in the academy too.

Reece James injury history: Every game missed by Chelsea star since 2021/22

The defender has endured a torrid few seasons at Stamford Bridge.

ByBen Browning Nov 22, 2024 Chelsea's academy solution

18-year-old, Josh Acheampong, is a right-back/right-sided centre-back who has come through the Cobham ranks, making his senior debut last season, and already making one appearance this campaign for the senior side in the EFL Cup.

However, recently the young defender was frozen out from both the U21 and senior squad, whilst Chelsea tried to come to a new contract agreement with Acheampong.

Many top clubs are said to be monitoring the 18-year-old, believing they can offer him a better pathway into regular first-team football, which could be of interest to the young talent. Acheampong has been described as “brave” by Maresca, who has mentioned the youngster on a number of occasions this season, as a player he likes.

However, with Acheampong now in a deadlock with the Chelsea board, being frozen out and awaiting a contract decision, sadly Maresca doesn’t have the choice to use him as a right-back solution, despite the fact he would be an ideal replacement for both James and Gusto. This simply has to change.

Corberan must instantly drop West Brom star after Oxford display

West Bromwich Albion must have thought they were heading to the Championship summit away at Oxford United, with a slim 1-0 win in their favour as the clock ticked nervously down.

The hosts had other ideas right at the death, though, as a scramble in the box managed to evade a number of Baggies shirts before Tottenham Hotspur loanee Dane Scarlett fired home instinctively to secure a 1-1 draw for the U’s.

Whilst Des Buckingham’s home side celebrated coming away from the game with a share of the spoils in dramatic style, Carlos Corberan would have been enraged at his own team’s last-gasp collapse, as many of his usual star performers had an off-day at the Kassam Stadium.

West Brom underperformers away at Oxford

There were a number of culprits on the Baggies’ end that put in lacklustre displays, especially towards the end of the game as the away side presumed the three points were safely in the bag.

But Scarlett pounced at the perfect opportunity to seal a 1-1 draw to capitalise on lax West Brom defending, and players such as Tom Fellows for Corberan’s men were also way off the pace compared to his usual blistering best in attack.

Away from helping himself to an impressive five assists from ten Championship clashes so far this campaign, the homegrown Baggies product never got going at the Kassam, compared to his partner down the left flank in Karlan Grant who scored West Brom’s only goal of the lunchtime kickoff.

Fellows would only amass 25 touches of the ball from his uneventful 70-minute showing, with the 21-year-old also failing to register a single shot or a successful dribble as the game ended up simply passing him by.

Corberan will want Fellows to get back to what he’s capable of in important Championship fixtures to come, with West Brom now winless in league action since the end of September, which will have made that late Scarlett goal an even more bitter pill to swallow.

The goal could well have been avoided if West Brom didn’t allow for a needless throw-in to happen, after one poor defensive performer in Semi Ajayi kicked it out of play for Scarlett to then become a last minute hero for the U’s.

West Brom defender Semi Ajayi.

Ajayi's numbers vs Oxford

The ex-Rotherham United defender, despite coming in at a towering 6 foot 4 frame, would also lose out when pinball ensued after the throw-in, failing to get tight to the header that then fell to the young Spurs starlet’s path to fire home.

It was a less than convincing display from Ajayi across the full 90 minutes too, seen in Express and Star journalist Lewis Cox dishing out the 30-year-old with a sub-par 5/10 rating post-match, labelling his performance as ‘mixed’ away from his ‘costly’ decision to gift the home side a chance from a throw-in.

Failing to register a single interception or block a shot in the 1-1 draw, on top of missing out on three duels being successfully won, Ajayi will just hope he can bounce back when he next has an opportunity to showcase his quality.

Corberan will be thinking about potentially changing things up in the heart of defence moving forward, to try and tweak areas of his side to kickstart a positive run of form again, and must instantly ditch the centre-back from the starting XI after this shocking display.

Still, he won’t go overboard for the mid-week trip to Ewood Park, as West Brom continue to hunt for an elusive win in league action after experiencing a slight sticky patch.

McKenna must drop Ipswich man who made 12 passes

Ipswich Town fans will be starting to get worried about their side’s lowly standing in the Premier League, with back-to-back abject displays souring the mood at Portman Road.

The 4-1 defeat to West Ham United away from home was a sobering watch, but that was reserved for the Tractor Boys faithful that made the trip to the London Stadium.

This more recent 2-0 loss to Everton was, however, the main viewing that all home sections of Ipswich’s ground had to endure, as a number of under performers struggled to ever get going for Kieran McKenna’s men against Sean Dyche’s victorious Toffees.

Ipswich underperformers vs Everton

It was a flat showing in truth from the Tractor Boys, who just need to pick up a win from somewhere in the league to boost confidence, having managed to evade victory in the Premier League now for eight matches on the spin.

The hosts did register 13 shots on Jordan Pickford’s net but it was to no avail, as the Ipswich defence unfortunately put in a shaky display, alongside no goal popping up next to their name.

Iliman Ndiaye’s opener saw Ipswich fail to deal with a Jack Harrison cross into the box, before the ex-Sheffield United man powered home, whilst Michael Keane’s game-clinching second saw a corner not be effectively cleared away which then allowed the Everton number five to confidently slot an effort past Arijanet Murić to make it 2-0.

Dara O’Shea was visibly weak in asserting himself into the contest at the back for McKenna’s men, with the former Burnley defender only managing to win a meagre one duel all afternoon, alongside also misdirecting a pass in the second half which nearly saw Ndiaye grab a brace.

Jack Clarke was wasteful from an attacking point of view, away from Ipswich’s defensive frailties, with the former Sunderland star skying an effort way over the bar early on in the contest which could have changed the complexion of the game if it had cannoned in.

He did win his side a penalty in the first 45 minutes when his tricky feet saw Dwight McNeil tangle with him in the box, but that decision was overturned by VAR in the end, in what was a frustrating afternoon to be associated with the Tractor Boys.

Clarke wasn’t the poorest performer in an attacking sense, however, as experienced Ipswich head Wes Burns continues to struggle to adapt to the bright lights of the Premier League.

Burns' performance vs Everton

Away from what he offered going forward, Burns’ indecisiveness to clear the ball away before Ndiaye’s opener set the Toffees on their way to picking up the three points, with the ball bouncing before the Senegalese attacker scored past Muric.

Moreover, the 29-year-old winger amassed fewer touches when on the pitch compared with the former Manchester City shot-stopper, accumulating a paltry 22 touches next to the ‘keeper’s 30, as the ex-Fleetwood Town man continually failed to leave his mark on the contest.

It was a day at the office for Burns where nothing really went to plan, with zero accurate crosses and zero accurate long balls registered, alongside also failing to win a single duel from four attempts.

He could also only complete 12 accurate passes, with Burns thankful to be substituted off just after the hour mark to put an end to his dire display.

There will be an inquest now as to who should start down this right flank moving forward, with the below-par Ipswich number seven needing to be dropped for someone else to get a chance, ahead of the Tractor Boys travelling to Thomas Frank’s Brentford next in the league.

The 29-year-old did very much play an important role in Ipswich unbelievably making it to the big time, having scored on the final day of the Championship season to secure automatic promotion bragging rights for his team, but the likes of summer recruit Chiedozie Ogbene could now be better suited as a fresher option in his place.

McKenna might well even rejig his main XI and opt to start Omari Hutchinson down this wing again, with the Ipswich manager in need of changing things up soon to avoid more and more defeats being notched up.
