Amorim can replace Amad & unleash Man Utd teen who wasn’t on bench vs Spurs

Manchester United have struggled under Ruben Amorim so far. The Red Devils have so far been led in 21 matches by their new manager, but have managed to win just ten of those games, losing nine times and drawing two along the way.

There have been some incredibly disappointing defeats in there, too. They include a 2-0 defeat away from home against Wolverhampton Wanderers and a loss by the same scoreline at Old Trafford against Crystal Palace.

There have been some high points, including a win away to Manchester City and a draw at rivals and Premier League leaders Liverpool.

However, they will now be without the man who scored the crucial goals in those games, Amad.

Amad’s impact under Amorim

In a season of huge disappointment for the Red Devils, one of the only good things has been the performances of Amad. The Ivorian forward was described as “unstoppable” after his Derby Day heroics by United legend turned Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville.

Despite a big impact in the tenure of former manager Erik ten Hag, Amad found opportunities sparse under the Dutchman. However, that cannot be said for his time under Amorim. The Portuguese manager seemingly loves the attacker, and has, at times, relied on him to dig his side out of a hole.

In 20 appearances under the former Sporting CP boss, the United number 16 has managed six goals and five assists, with nine of those coming in games where his side won or drew. Amad’s contributions have been massive this season.

So, for United to be without Amad for the rest of the season, is a huge blow. Amorim confirmed last week that the Ivorian damaged his ankle ligaments and will miss the remainder of the campaign.

It leaves the Portuguese manager with the unenviable task of finding an in-house replacement.

Perhaps the answer could lie in United’s ever-productive Carrington academy.

United’s in-house Amad replacement

Sunday afternoon’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur was a memorable day for several of United’s academy players. Amorim named eight of them on the bench, bringing Chido Obi onto the pitch for the final throes of the game, for his first-team debut.

However, the solution to his Amad problem may not lie in the players he selected on Sunday afternoon in North London, but in the form of Shea Lacey, an attacker who was not involved against Spurs.

Lacey is an attacking player who is held in high regard and is believed to have a “huge future ahead”, according to football talent scout Jacek Kulig. The youngster has struggled with injuries in the last few months but is finally back to full fitness and playing weekly for United’s academy.

His record for the Red Devils youth side is impressive. He has played 30 times for the under-18s and the under-19s in the UEFA Youth League, scoring five goals and grabbing seven assists in that time.

Just like Amad, Lacey is a left-footed right winger, who excels in the half spaces and has exceptional close control. He is also comfortable cutting inside on his left foot and trying his luck from range, as this strike against Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2023 shows.

The Liverpool-born winger is a player who can have a big impact in a short space of time. His stats on Sofascore from a 26-minute cameo against Galatasaray in the UEFA Youth League last season show this.

In that short time, he created one big chance and won four out of seven ground duels.

Perhaps Lacey is the solution to replacing Amad. He is of a similar profile and excels in the same areas of the pitch as United’s Ivorian winger.

At 17 years of age, he is perhaps too young to be thrown into the deep end and start every week, but opportunities off the bench may be there.

In The Pipeline

Lacey certainly seems like a player United fans can get excited about. Who knows, maybe a first-team debut isn’t too far out of the picture.

Will Sutherland's maiden first-class hundred leads Victoria's recovery

Marcus Harris also played a vital innings after South Australia had made early inroads

Will Sutherland’s maiden first-class hundred helped Victoria fight back•Getty Images

Allrounder Will Sutherland posted his maiden Sheffield Shield century to keep Victoria in the contest against South Australia at Karen Rolton Oval. They were in all sorts of trouble at 4 for 54 and 6 for 137 before Sutherland came to the rescue with the finest knock of his young career. The 22-year-old struck 100 off 168 balls, including nine fours and three sixes, to lift Victoria to 9 for 264 at stumps on day one.His heroics were all the more surprising given he entered the match with a first-class average of just 14.33 from 21 matches and with a top score of 34 not out.Sutherland was also left shaken by a big hit to the helmet when he was yet to score. He was given the all clear to continue after an on-field medical assessment, and he gained in confidence the longer his innings went.Related

Paine falls cheaply on first-class return as Queensland take charge

South Australia’s tactic of bowling short to him soon came unstuck as Sutherland began to unleash a series of lusty blows.Sutherland’s knock came on the same day that his sister, Annabel Sutherland, posted 68 off 76 balls in Victoria’s WNCL win over Tasmania. She posted a century two days earlier in what has proven to be a magical week for the talented family.”It’s what Alex Carey was saying out in the middle – saying the Sutherlands are in good form,” Sutherland said. “I’ve got a long way to go to catch up with her and the way she’s batting. But it’s good to be in the runs. I do work very hard on my batting, so it’s good to see some reward.”Although Will Sutherland was able to cash in, Will Pucovski missed out completely. He survived a strong lbw shout from Harry Conway on the first ball of the innings. Three balls later he was out when he edged behind. It was one of five catches for wicketkeeper Alex Carey across the day.Peter Handscomb, Nic Maddinson and Matt Short all fell cheaply before lunch, while Sam Harper was dismissed after the break to leave Victoria reeling at 5 for 92.The damage would have been far worse if it wasn’t for Marcus Harris, who kept his calm amid the carnage to post a finely-crafted 85 off 170 balls. Once he departed, Sutherland took over in dominant fashion to further drag Victoria to safety. His innings was eventually ended by a mesmerising Jordan Buckingham delivery that dramatically swung back in to clip the off stump bail.Buckingham finished the day with figures of 3 for 52, while David Grant and Wes Agar also enjoyed success.Pucovski scored an unbeaten 193 for a Victorian second XI last month in his return from his latest concussion. Although he was dismissed cheaply on Thursday in his first Shield hit-out of the season, he will get another chance to shine in Victoria’s second innings.

Better than Ferguson: Chelsea looking at signing "the hottest CF in Europe"

Heading into the final 48 hours of the window, Chelsea have been sitting ducks up to now in the transfer market, waiting for their opportunity to strike.

Enzo Maresca’s side have suffered a poor drop-off in form in recent weeks, and fans are now expecting their goal-scoring issues to be addressed in this window, either adding a direct left-winger or a box dominant centre-forward to the squad.

Any additions could also see some departures, with João Félix and Christopher Nkunku both potentially facing the exit door having played understudy to Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson so far this campaign.

Chelsea monitoring new striker

According to reports from The Telegraph, Chelsea are “making checks” on Sporting striker, Viktor Gyokeres, along with a list of other players including Ipswich’s Liam Delap, Brighton’s Evan Ferguson and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Chelsea’s only natural senior centre-forward is Jackson, with Nkunku playing as a deputy striker so far this season despite preferring to play as a number ten, and Marc Guiu, who is just 18-years-old, getting the odd chance to prove himself in Conference League games too.

Gyokeres has made 33 appearances for Sporting so far this season, scoring 34 goals and, providing seven assists, proving himself to be “the hottest striker in Europe”.

How Viktor Gyokeres compares to Evan Ferguson

Ferguson has been linked with a big move away from Brighton since breaking through in the 2022/23 season, where he scored six Premier League goals in 19 appearances, aged 17.

When comparing Gyokeres to Ferguson, the metrics are night and day. Gyokeres is already the finished article, creating for himself and others, providing instant output and still being effective in all phases, dropping to help link play and running the channels.

Ferguson has shown he can be a clinical finisher, averaging 0.22 goals/shot in the 2022/23 season, and winning more aerial duels with 0.85 per 90 in that term. Whilst the Irishman has plenty of potential as a box-dominant striker, Gyokeres offers an instant solution, whereas the Brighton ace remains a slightly unknown quantity due to his injury problems over the past few seasons.

Brighton & Hove Albion'sEvanFergusonlooks dejected after Wolverhampton Wanderers' Matheus Cunha scores their second goal.

Portugal head coach, Roberto Martinez, has labelled Gyokeres “one of the best signings in Europe” signings in Europe, joining Sporting from Coventry in 2023 for around £20m. The Sweden international has gone on to score 77 goals in 83 appearances, providing 22 assists.

Thus, Chelsea would be getting an elite finisher in the Sweden international, someone who has a track record of scoring at an incredibly high rate, which could be the difference between the Blues getting three points in some games, instead of one. The extra physicality would also help in regards to creation, allowing wingers to cross with more of a target than Jackson in the box.

Blackburn now ready to make move to sign striker who has 44 career goals

Blackburn Rovers are ready to make a move to sign a 25-year-old striker in what remains of this January transfer window, according to a new report.

Blackburn Rovers news and updates

John Eustace’s side fell to back-to-back defeats on Tuesday evening, as they were beaten 2-0 at Ewood Park by Coventry City. Despite the two losses, Rovers remain in the play-off places, but given they have lost 10 games, the most of any top six side this season, Eustace will have his eyes on ways of improving his team in the transfer market.

Blackburn now offer £1.75m to sign new forward instead of Brereton Diaz

Rovers are keen to add more attacking firepower to their ranks this month.

ByBen Browning Jan 15, 2025

One player that Blackburn are interested in signing is Lewis O’Brien from Nottingham Forest. The 26-year-old has been playing in the MLS but has now returned to the City Ground and is expected to leave on loan once again before the window closes on February 3rd. But Blackburn are not alone in their pursuit, as Hull City have joined the race to sign O’Brien and are planning to make a move soon.

Signing a new midfielder may have just become even more important for Rovers, as Eustace confirmed this week that Sondre Tronstad is facing up to six weeks on the sidelines due to picking up a significant hamstring injury: “We have had Sonny [Tronstad] scanned, and he’s going to be out for six weeks, unfortunately. He has been a magnificent performer for us, and he’ll be a big miss.”

Blackburn to make move for striker who has 44 career goals

But a new midfielder isn’t all that Eustace wants, as according to TuttoMercatoWeb, Blackburn are looking to rekindle their interest in striker Augustus Kargbo in the remaining days of this transfer window.

Rovers made contact with the 25-year-old during the summer transfer window, but a deal never worked out. This report states that interest has remained from the Lancashire side, and they are now ready to make a fresh move this month.

Kargbo, who has won 17 caps for Sierra Leone, currently plays for Serie B side Cesena and has done so since August 2023. The forward has spent the majority of his career in Italy and has done well since moving to Cesena, as he scored nine goals and recorded 10 assists last season, taking his tally to 44 career goals in senior football.

It is unclear how much Kargbo could cost Rovers in this transfer window, but the striker is only under contract until 2026, meaning there shouldn’t be a massive price tag.

Blackburn currently have Makhtar Gueye, Yuki Ohashi, Andreas Weimann, and Harry Leonard as their forward options. Weimann and Gueye are their top goalscorers with five goals, but if Rovers are going to last the distance in the play-off race, there is going to be a need for more goals in the team.

Kargbo’s flexibility in the sense that he can play on the left as well as behind the striker means his arrival may not guarantee he replaces one of the current ranks but instead partners them at the top end of the pitch.

ICC ODI rankings: Ismail, Wolvaardt, Khaka consolidate top-five positions

South Africa’s dominating 3-0 ODI series victory over Ireland has resulted in big gains for their key personnel in the latest update of the ICC ODI rankings. Shabnim Ismail reached her career-best rating of 755 points after an 11-wicket haul in the series to consolidate her position at No. 2 for bowlers, while fellow seamer Ayabonga Khaka moved up to No. 5.

Laura Wolvaardt’s 89 in the final ODI has lifted her one place up to No. 4 on the batters list, pushing Australia captain Meg Lanning to No. 5. However, Australia’s Alyssa Healy continues to be the world’s top-ranked ODI batter with Nat Sciver and Beth Mooney still holding on to positions two and three.Ismail has only England spinner Sophie Ecclestone – the world No. 1 in both white-ball formats – ahead of her in the ODI rankings. Her match haul of 5 for 8 in the final ODI though has extended the gap between her and the Australian duo of Jess Jonassen (No. 3) and Megan Schutt (No. 4) on the rankings table.Laura Wolvaardt, briefly No. 1 during the Women’s ODI World Cup, has moved up to No. 4•Cricket Ireland/Keniry Photography

The ACC Women’s tournament in Malaysia and the Kwibuka Women’s Tournament in Rwanda also brought in some upward movement in the T20 rankings. United Arab Emirates’ Esha Oza rose three places to a career-best 33rd rank in the T20 batters list that still has Australians Mooney and Lanning, and Indian teenager Shafali Verma rounding up the top three.Uganda’s Sarah Akiteng went up 14 places to 66th on the T20I bowlers rankings list that features Ecclestone at No. 1, followed by England’s Sarah Glenn and Ismail at Nos. 2 and 3.England’s Sciver remains the world’s No. 1 allrounder with Australia Ellyse Perry behind her. The culmination of the Ireland ODI series did see Marizanne Kapp drop to No. 4 among allrounders with West Indies’ Hayley Matthews now holding on to the No. 3 position.

Karunaratne, Oshada fifties lift Sri Lanka after Bangladesh post 365

The visitors made steady headway on the second day, first through Rajitha and later through their openers, after Mushfiqur’s unbeaten 175

Andrew Fidel Fernando24-May-2022StumpsSri Lanka made steady headway on day two of the second Test in Mirpur, first through Kasun Rajitha, who completed a five-wicket haul, in the first hour, then later through Dimuth Karunaratne and Oshada Fernando, who hit half-centuries in response to Bangladesh’s 365.By stumps, Sri Lanka were 222 runs behind, eight wickets in hand, and Karunaratne still going strong on 70 not out. Although Bangladesh could yet take control of the Test, Sri Lanka perhaps ended the second day in a stronger position than they had begun it. They conceded only 90 further runs as their seamers hunted down the last five Bangladesh wickets. And, they now have a base for their own first innings, with in-form batters still to come. There were times in the morning in which Bangladesh frustrated Sri Lanka, however, and this was largely down to Mushfiqur Rahim. Having lost overnight partner Litton Das early, Mushfiqur doggedly pressed his team’s total forward in the company of the tail, himself striding to an unbeaten 175. He was especially effective in a 49-run eighth-wicket stand with Taijul Islam, in which Mushfiqur scored 34 off 42 deliveries. He crossed 150 during the course of that partnership – the fifth occasion he had passed that mark, out of nine trips to triple figures.Related

Kasun Rajitha and Asitha Fernando, Sri Lanka's unlikely new-ball pair, show their mettle

As had been the case on the first day, it was Rajitha who set the major events in motion, when he dismissed Litton in the seventh over of the morning. The seamers having conceded only two boundaries in the first six overs, Rajitha delivered a length ball in the channel outside off, which Litton prodded at and sent off the outside edge to second slip. Kusal Mendis, who had recovered from the chest pains that saw him hospitalised on day one, took an excellent catch diving forward to end Litton’s innings on 141.Three balls later, Rajitha struck again, shaping the second new ball away from left-hander Mosaddek Hossain to have him caught behind. Rajitha had easily been Sri Lanka’s best bowler in the innings, probing the channel consistently. Mosaddek’s wicket completed a much-deserved five-for.With his last recognised batting partner now out, Mushfiqur kicked into a busier gear. He searched proactively for scoring opportunities, resorting even to the reverse sweep he had shunned for much of his innings. The first 127 runs of his innings had come off 277 balls; the last 48 off 78.Mushfiqur Rahim remained unbeaten on 175 as Bangladesh were bowled out for 365•AFP via Getty ImagesAsitha Fernando struck twice with bouncers to take two tail-end wickets, before last man Ebadot Hossain frustrated Sri Lanka for the extra half-an-hour the umpires granted the visitors beyond the scheduled lunch. But Bangladesh could only add four further runs after the break before Ebadot was run out at the non-striker’s end, attempting a second run to keep Mushfiqur on strike early in a Rajitha over.In response, Sri Lanka’s openers began confidently enough. Oshada survived a review for caught behind down the legside in the first over, but got early boundaries away to get himself into the innings. Karunaratne was more assured at the other end, both batters progressing busily against the new ball. Oshada survived another review – this time for lbw – on 39, but Taijul’s excellent, straightening delivery was projected only to hit the outside of off stump, resulting in umpire’s call. Soon after, he came down the track and smashed one back at Shakib Al Hasan, who got both hands to the tough chance to his right, but could not hold on. Oshada charged Shakib again shortly before the tea break, this time to launch him for a straight six that took him to his fifth Test half-century.Karunaratne was content for Oshada to have the majority of the strike early on, but took more control once his opening partner had edged Ebadot to slip for 57. As usual, he rarely went after the big boundary shots, but did not miss out on the chance to pick up singles square of the wicket on either side.He had some fortune too. On 36, a full Ebadot delivery hit him on the boot as he missed a clip to the legside, and although the lbw appeal was turned down, it would have been overturned had Bangladesh reviewed. Shortly after, he was dropped at short leg off Taijul’s bowling on 37, although this was a ball that travelled rapidly to the fielder, off the middle of the bat as Karunaratne whipped square. The rest of his innings was uneventful, however, as he made his way to his 29th half-century and onwards. Through the late stages of the day, he watched Kusal’s laboured 11 off 49, before Shakib trapped Kusal in front. Karunaratne went to stumps in the company of nightwatchman Rajitha, who had faced 11 balls and not scored a run.

Mumbai beset with problems; squad depth gives Super Giants most solutions

There have been some good signs of late for the five-time champions, who will have to win most of their remaining games to have a chance of making the playoffs

Himanshu Agrawal15-Apr-20222:25

How can Mumbai Indians fix their weakened lower order?

Big pictureMiracles do happen in sport. In cricket too. Pakistan took home the 1992 World Cup after only one win in their first five matches, and closer home, Kolkata Knight Riders won nine games in a row on their way to a second IPL title in 2014.Why talk about that now? Well, Mumbai Indians must win eight of their remaining nine league matches to have a fair chance of making the playoffs, after losing five in a row to begin with. One of Mumbai’s problems is that their senior core of Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard and Jasprit Bumrah have not contributed a lot. But count the positives, and you will note Bumrah’s yorker-laden spell against Punjab Kings, which could be a sign of things to come, Suryakumar Yadav has continued to deliver runs, and youngsters Tilak Varma and Dewald Brevis have shone on the big stage.Live in the USA

Watch the match on ESPN+ in English and in Hindi.

Mumbai have begun their race against time already, but must start running faster, and fast.On the other hand, Lucknow Super Giants have such luxury in their ranks that they could afford to not bowl any of Krunal Pandya, Marcus Stoinis and Deepak Hooda against Rajasthan Royals. Such is the richness of their batting order that they could send Stoinis in at No. 8, allowing themselves to have two left-handers at the crease against spin, while keeping their batting order flexible in strategic battle against Royals. It didn’t work out on that occasion, but three wins in five games isn’t too shabby. In a reality that may pinch their opponents, it is Mumbai’s ex-enforcer Quinton de Kock who has been leading the way for Super Giants with the bat, especially in quick knocks of 61 and 80 set the tone for his side’s successful run chases against Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals. There have been many other significant contributions. With the bat from Hooda, KL Rahul and the impressive Ayush Badoni, and with the ball from Avesh Khan, Ravi Bishnoi, K Gowtham and Pandya. They would back themselves to put the narrow loss against Royals behind quickly. In the newsThis tournament has been a lot about the new and young faces, three of whom feature in this contest: Badoni, Tilak and Brevis. Who knows if one of them will spur their team on to a win – Mumbai, especially, would hope that happens.5:05

Should Stoinis have come in earlier against Rajasthan Royals?

Likely XIsSuper Giants are unlikely to tweak with their side despite coming off a loss, since that XI provides batting depth as well as multiple allrounders. But Stoinis’ batting position could be rejigged.Lucknow Super Giants: 1 KL Rahul (capt), 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Marcus Stoinis, 4 Deepak Hooda, 5 Ayush Badoni, 6 Jason Holder, 7 Krunal Pandya, 8 K Gowtham, 9 Dushmantha Chameera, 10 Avesh Khan, 11 Ravi BishnoiShould Mumbai bring Tim David back? Should they give Fabian Allen a chance? Should they stick with Basil Thampi and M Ashwin? Something. Anything.Mumbai Indians: 1 Ishan Kishan (wk), 2 Rohit Sharma (capt), 3 Dewald Brevis, 4 Suryakumar Yadav, 5 Tilak Varma, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Tymal Mills/Tim David, 8 Jaydev Unadkat, 9 Mayank Markande/M Ashwin, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 Basil Thampi/Fabian AllenStrategy punt Bishnoi has been Super Giants’ trump card this season, bowling quicker and with more googlies than legspin. Across all T20s, the highest strike rate that any of Rohit, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar and Pollard have against him is Kishan’s 118. Bishnoi has also dismissed Rohit and Kishan once each, and Suryakumar twice, with the in-form batter striking at just 89 against the legspinner. And although Bishnoi is yet to get Pollard, the explosive batter goes even quieter against him with a strike rate of 79. Thus, with Rohit, Kishan and Suryakumar forming Mumbai’s top three, Super Giants can employ Bishnoi in the powerplay, aside from using him against Pollard at the death. None of Thampi, Ashwin and Jaydev Unadkat has ever dismissed de Kock in a T20. Moreover, his strike rate against them reads 173, 153 and 145, respectively. Bumrah, too, has never got the Super Giants opener, although he has bowled only six deliveries to him, being Mumbai team-mates for the longest time. And against Pollard, de Kock has fallen only once while going at a strike rate of 122. With that record and with his recent form, de Kock might just end all hopes of Mumbai’s revival if he gets going in the powerplay.Stats that matter Since 2018, Rahul has the most runs in the IPL – 2680 at an average of 53.6. Just like this year, Mumbai had also lost five matches to start the 2014 IPL. But they won seven out of the next nine and made the playoffs, where they lost the Eliminator to Super Kings. However, IPL was an eight-team tournament at the time. Dushmantha Chameera has dismissed Rohit six times in T20Is, the most times the India and Mumbai captain has fallen to an individual. The No. 3 position hasn’t yielded Super Giants the results yet. In five innings this season, that spot has given them only 21 runs at a strike rate of 62, both by far the lowest among all sides.

Rangers loan flop is now a "superstar" & similar to a £100m sensation

A few weeks ago, it looked as though Glasgow Rangers were going to remain in the vicious cycle which had seen three managers depart before December over the previous three years.

Philippe Clement was teetering on the edge after a dismal start to the season. Premiership defeats to Celtic, Aberdeen and Kilmarnock ensured the Gers’ title challenge was over before it really began.

Wins over Nice and Killie recently have slightly eased the pressure, but the next seven days will likely define the season. The Light Blues face Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League, before a League Cup final clash against Celtic three days later.

If Clement can somehow win both of these, he may just remain in the Ibrox hot seat beyond 2024, which seemed unthinkable a few weeks ago.

Michael Beale and Giovanni Van Bronckhorst weren’t so lucky, with the Dutchman perhaps sacked slightly too hasty.

Giovanni Van Bronckhorst’s record at Rangers

The former Feyenoord manager arrived in November 2021 following Steven Gerrard’s departure to Aston Villa.

Having spent three years at Ibrox as a player, the Dutchman knew all about the club, which was looked on as a major advantage.

Former Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Domestically, the Gers struggled in the title race, eventually blowing a lead to let Celtic sneak through and win the Premiership. They did win the Scottish Cup, but it was scant consolation.

The greatest success came in Europe. Having secured qualification from the group stages in the Europa League, Van Bronckhorst led the Light Blues to wins over Borussia Dortmund, Red Star Belgrade, Braga and RB Leipzig before succumbing to Eintracht Frankfurt in the final.

The next step was Champions League qualification, and the club got it after an aggregate win over PSV Eindhoven. They ended up finishing bottom of the group with zero wins from six games, however, and soon after, Van Bronckhorst was sacked.

He didn’t enjoy much success in the transfer market, but one of his signings has since gone on to make the breakthrough at Manchester United – Amad Diallo.

Amad Diallo’s Rangers statistics

In January 2022, the Gers made three loan signings which the manager hoped would give his side a boost during the second half of the season.

James Sands failed to make an impact, so did Aaron Ramsey, who missed a penalty in the Europa League final shootout. The final signing was that of Diallo, who arrived from Man United.

He was looked upon as a wildcard option given his tender age and lack of experience in the game. Indeed, prior to this loan spell, the former Atalanta gem had played just nine times for the Old Trafford side and a temporary move would help him secure more game time.

The youngster took just two minutes to make his mark, scoring on his debut against Ross County, and it looked like the club had a wonderful gem ready to spark their title challenge into life.

Unfortunately, this was about as good as it got for the Ivorian, as he scored just twice more for the club. Diallo did win the Scottish Cup, but failed to make it off the bench in the Europa League final.

Since then, however, the winger has gone on to make his mark at United.

Amad Diallo now looks like a £100m player

Another loan spell during 2022/23 at Sunderland saw Diallo showcase his true talents, scoring 14 goals and grabbing four assists as the Black Cats just missed out on securing a place in the Premier League.

Injury issues hampered his 2023/24 campaign, but the 22-year-old did net the winner against Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-final and this was the catalyst for the player to finally star for United this term.

Diallo has featured in 20 games for the Red Devils this term, registering eight goal contributions in all competitions, and he could go from strength to strength under Ruben Amorim, that’s for sure.

Dubbed a “superstar” earlier this year by journalist Liam Canning, Diallo looks like he is on the right path towards greatness.

Not only that, but he is similar in style to one of the finest wingers on the continent in Bukayo Saka.

The Arsenal star has registered 126 goal contributions – 65 goals and 61 assists – during his time with the Gunners, proving to be one of the most consistent attacking talents in the Premier League.

This is the level that Diallo will be looking to reach, and he certainly isn’t far from it, especially after a positive start to the season. According to FBref, Saka is the seventh-most comparable player to Diallo in Europe’s top five leagues, which proves that the duo are alike in many ways.

Furthermore, the pair have registered similar statistics across a variety of metrics domestically this season with regard to assists (five vs ten), shot on target percentage (31.3% vs 37.5%), shot-creating actions per 90 (4.84 vs 6.76), goal creating actions per 90 (1.02 vs 1.77) and successful take-on percentage (46.9% vs 41.4%) which suggests these two wingers enjoy plenty of success in the final third.

Saka is in a league of his own right now, and he is currently valued at €140m (£116m) according to Transfermarkt, and this value will continue to rise as long as the winger is delivering for Arsenal and Mikel Arteta on a consistent basis.

Diallo could become a player who is valued at over £100m, as it looks like he could emerge as a key player under Amorim’s leadership.

While he may not have enjoyed the most productive of spells at Ibrox, Diallo did manage to secure a Scottish Cup winners medal while gaining experience in a league that thrives on how physical it is.

This may well have made the winger stronger, being able to cope with a lot more on the field, which appears to be evident in his performances for United this campaign.
