39 y/o Not Considered For Spurs Sporting Director Job

Journalist Alasdair Gold has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are not considering a move to hire Brentford's Lee Dykes as their new sporting director.

Who will Tottenham appoint as their next sporting director?

With Fabio Paratici leaving the club around the same time as Antonio Conte, Daniel Levy has a big job on his hands this summer as he makes not one but two vital appointments at Spurs.

And it had seemed as though the north London were potentially going to raid their Premier League rivals to bring in Dykes from the Bees.

Indeed, earlier on in May, journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed that the "highly rated" executive was on Tottenham's list as a target.

However, while speaking about the latest on it all on YouTube channel, Gold suggested that Dykes was actually no longer being considered.

The journalist explained (0:56): "There was also, I know, a lot of talk about Lee Dykes at Brentford.

"From what I understand, he's not a candidate being considered.”

Who has Dykes signed for Brentford?

Dykes has done a great job working with Brentford, helping them establish themselves as tricky Premier League opposition – as Spurs found out this weekend in the 3-0 loss.

Indeed, as the club's head of scouting since 2019 – before becoming technical director last summer – he was presumably an important figure in landing Ivan Toney from Peterborough for just an initial £5m.

He was also around when the club paid the same price to sign David Raya from Blackburn Rovers, which will be of note to Spurs fans as they have been strongly linked with a move for the goalkeeper this summer.

Brentford goalkeeper David Raya.

With that being the case, it may well come as a bit of a blow to learn that Dykes isn't on the club's radar and Spurs won't be hiring the 39-year-old.

And so it remains unclear who the primary target is for this role, just as it's still not known who the Premier League club want to appoint as manager either.

On that front, a fresh update from The Times claims that Julian Nagelsmann is back on the radar again but this goes against conflicting reports which suggest the opposite.

All in all, it would take a brave individual to place any bets on a name for either vacant position but you can at least be pretty sure that it won't be Dykes to come in as sporting director.

Sutherland stresses ICC big picture

Cricket Australia’s chief executive James Sutherland has stressed the need to view proposed changes to the structure of international cricket in their entirety, after the BCCI expressed its opposition to the concept of two-tier Test cricket.ICC chief executive David Richardson has advocated what he calls a “proper competition structure” for Test cricket, which could see a top division of the seven highest-ranked Test nations and a lower division including the sides ranked eight to ten, as well as new Test teams from the Associate nations. The concept was discussed at the ICC’s annual conference in Edinburgh in June, along with other potential changes to the structure of international cricket. However, the boards of both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh expressed their opposition to two-tier Test cricket, a stance that has now been backed by BCCI president Anurag Thakur.”In the two-tier system, they will lose out on a lot, including revenue and the opportunity to play against top teams,” Thakur said of lower-ranked Test sides. “We don’t want that to happen. We want to work in the best interests of world cricket and that is why our team plays against all the countries.”However, Sutherland said nothing under the new proposal would prevent top teams such as India playing against the lower-ranked sides in bilateral contests, and the overall raft of proposed changes would add greater context to international cricket.”I saw the headlines about that and I saw some comment that that was about India wanting to play against the other countries,” Sutherland told ESPNcricinfo. “Well, frankly there’s nothing that I’m aware of that stops India from playing against whoever they want to.”But creating some sort of structure around Test cricket is one small part of what’s a number of different components to a major review of the structure and format of international bilateral cricket, something that we believe is really important to ensure the sustainable future of international cricket.”Whether there are two divisions is one small component. There’s a whole lot of other things about what the financial model looks like, how teams that may be in the second division are protected and supported to ensure they’re given the best financial backing and other opportunities to bounce back from the second division.”But we’re only talking about Test cricket there. That’s one small component of the whole package or raft of things that includes T20 league, one-day league, and competition that adds context and structure to international cricket, and hopefully makes it more sustainable as a fan proposition, which is ultimately the most important thing.”Sutherland said it was too early to speculate about the future of proposed ICC changes, despite the apparent opposition expressed by Thakur last week.”We’ll have discussions about that in time,” Sutherland said. “It’s hard to gather exactly what people are thinking from headlines or limited media reports. Until you actually get with people and understand what they’re thinking it’s very difficult to rationalise and probably inappropriate to make too much comment.”

Newcastle Hit The Jackpot On World-class £40m Machine

Newcastle United have scarcely fired wide of the mark since the affluent PIF takeover in October 2021, and no deal encapsulates the winds of change at the club better than Bruno Guimaraes.

Signing in January 2022 from Lyon for £40m, Guimaraes joined a struggling Premier League outfit that was battling to preserve top-flight status, but his impact has exceeded expectations and then some.

Making 17 divisional appearances across the second phase of the 21/22 campaign, the 25-year-old would score five goals and register one assist, integral in ushering in a new level of performance and a new sense of belief, with manager Eddie Howe blown away by his engine's technical ability and hailing him as "magnificent" as the threat of relegation swiftly became a fleeting and poignant memory.

Recording a spectacular seasonal Sofascore rating of 7.25, complementing his direct output with an 86% pass success rate and an average of 2.6 tackles per match, the £120k-per-week gem carried his form into the new footballing year and has been the centrepiece of the outfit's resounding exploits, having reached the Carabao Cup finale and perching comfortably inside the league's top-four with just five matches to play.

How much is Bruno Guimaraes worth?

Few would've expected the Magpies to ascend to the front of the game as swiftly as they have done, but it is all down to manager Howe's tactical aptitude, the pinpoint success in the market alongside technical director Dan Ashworth, and the implementation on the field.

Guimaraes was the perfect signing; as per FBref, the midfield monster ranks among the top 16% of positional peers for rate of assists, the top 20% for progressive passes, the top 15% for successful take-ons and the top 15% for tackles per 90, confirming the dynamism of his trade that has left him held in such high regard.

According to a recent report stemming from Spain, Liverpool are considering attempting a swoop for the gem, with a seismic fee of €100m (£88m) being touted. Real Madrid are another who have been noted as suitors for the midfielder.

This value represents a staggering 120% increase from the fee paid for Guimaraes' signature last year, and is a testament to the Magpies' resounding success in such a short time.

Newcastle United's Bruno Guimaraes in pre-match action against Brentford.

Hailed as "world-class" by his teammate Dan Burn, Guimaraes will undoubtedly continue to see his value balloon over the coming months, with the Toon poised for that coveted spot in the Champions League.

And while Jurgen Klopp's Reds may hold a vested interest in the ten-cap ace, there is a feeling that Guimaraes has scarcely scratched the surface of his potential on Tyneside, and despite the lucrative fees his name is being touted at, it would be ludicrous for Howe and co to imagine anything other than a future with the Brazilian at the heart of the plans. Indeed, they truly struck gold when bringing him to the club last year.

Rangers Must Unleash "Immense" £8.3k-p/w Sensation

Michael Beale will be hoping Glasgow Rangers bounce back from their Old Firm defeat last weekend as their underwhelming season continues today at Ibrox.

St Mirren are the visitors and with the Premiership title race pretty much over after the recent defeat to Celtic, its time Beale makes a few changes and unleashes players who are in urgent need of some game time.

Speaking in his pre match press conference, Beale confirmed that there will be six players missing for the St Mirren tie, saying:

"A few missing for the weekend.

"Connor Goldson is still unavailable. Ridvan, Colak, Wright, Jack, and Kent are also unavailable for the weekend.”

This could be a blessing in disguise for the Englishman as he will now be forced to maybe start a few players who otherwise wouldn’t have gotten a look in due to these injuries.

One player who could benefit from the absence of Kent will be that of Fashion Sakala, who has had to make do with appearances off the bench recently due to the form of Todd Cantwell, but he can take full advantage this afternoon.

Will Fashion Sakala start for Rangers against St Mirren?

The Zambian forward has turned a corner under Beale’s reign, having barely featured under Giovanni van Bronckhorst during the first few months of the season.

He has scored six goals and grabbed seven assists since mid-December and even though the majority of these displays came from a spot on the right wing, his finest performance this season was on the left-hand side, tearing apart a Hibernian side who quite simply didn’t know what to do with him.

The 26-year-old received a Sofascore rating of 9.6/10 for that performance which included a goal, two assists, seven key passes and four successful dribble attempts, terrorising the Hibs backline.

Fashion Sakala for Rangers

There was plenty of praise for the £8.3k-per-week sensation from pundits James McFadden and Steven Thomson following the match, with the former dubbing him a “constant threat” while former Gers striker Thomson stated that he had been “immense” against the Easter Road outfit.

His unpredictability is arguably his greatest strength, confusing defenders as they never know if he will try to take a shot, dribble past them or use his pace to cut inside and tee up a chance for someone else.

Against the Buddies earlier this season, Sakala scored and registered an assist, so could it be time for him to run riot against the Paisley side once again?

Only time will tell.

Leeds Make Contact To Sign Teenager

Leeds United are working on a move to bring Hamilton Academical teenager Josh McDonald to Elland Road, Football Insider report.

What’s the latest Leeds transfer news?

The Whites are currently in a battle to avoid the drop in the Premier League under Javi Gracia, however, sporting Victor Orta already appears to be looking at potential summer transfers.

He has confirmed that the club are keen on bringing in Barcelona teenager Ilias Akhomach when his Nou Camp contract expires in the summer, whereas Leeds also made a late move to hijack Aston Villa’s deal for Celtic youngster Aidan Borland.

Adding to the club’s Thorp Arch academy appears to be high on Orta’s agenda over the coming months, with a move for McDonald seemingly of interest to those in Yorkshire.

Football Insider shared a story regarding McDonald and Leeds in the last 48 hours. They revealed that the Whites have already been in contact with the 16-year-old midfielder and his family, looking to tempt him to move south. Leeds aren’t alone, though, with Rangers and other Premier League sides eyeing the teenager.

Could McDonald be a future first-team star at Leeds?

Orta has brought in several youngsters during his time at Leeds, with many getting their chance on the first-team stage in the Premier League. The likes of Illan Meslier and Pascal Struijk are now considered first-team regulars after joining as teenagers, whereas Crysencio Summerville and summer signing Wilfried Gnonto have also made a positive impact in Yorkshire.

The Whites even became the first team in Premier League history to hand eight teenagers their debuts in a single campaign last season, with Leo Hjelde being one of those after arriving from another Scottish side in Celtic. McDonald could be well aware of the pathway through to the senior side at Leeds, and it looks as if the Whites are keen on getting a deal done after approaching the teenager and his family.

Described as an “exceptional talent” by coaches, McDonald could well be the next player to try and breakthrough at Elland Road. He has already made seven caps for his nation at U18 level, two years above his age group, and a move south to Leeds could well be one to keep an eye on following this update.

Everton leading the race to sign Abraham

Everton are leading the race to sign AS Roma striker Tammy Abraham this summer, according to reports.

The Lowdown: January contact made

Sean Dyche failed to bring a single player to Goodison Park during the short amount of time he had available to him at the start of the New Year but it sounds like he’s already identifying his targets for the upcoming window.

Abraham’s contract at the Stadio Olimpico isn’t set to expire until 2026, but having recently dropped off in form under Jose Mourinho, he could be on the move at the end of the season.

The Yellow and Reds forward is no stranger to Premier League football, having worked his way up through the ranks from being an academy graduate to a senior first-team squad member at Chelsea.

iNews report that the Toffees had an approach for the 25-year-old turned down in January, but having made contact, it’s believed that the Italian giants would be willing to listen to offers.

The Latest: Everton in pole position

According to Forzaroma.info (via Sport Witness), Everton are in the ‘front row’ to sign Abraham with several clubs, including the Merseysiders, ‘ready to present important offers’.

Roma have already ‘fixed’ their asking price and are set to demand a fee of €75m (£66m) in order to sanction his sale.

Dyche’s side are ‘in the picture’ to land England’s former international, who could ‘part ways’ with the Serie A outfit should his form not improve between now and the conclusion of the term.

The Verdict: No-brainer

Abraham has been dubbed a ‘goal machine’ by former professional Stephen Elliot and should the opportunity to sign him arise this summer, Everton have a no-brainer of a decision to make.

Mourinho’s striker has posted a remarkable 202 goal contributions (159 goals and 43 assists) in 355 career appearances, highlighting how prolific he can be in the final third.

The Camberwell-born talent would also be the ideal target man up top standing at 6 foot 2 where he’s currently averaging 2.2 aerial wins per league game.

Chelsea’s former star offers excellent flexibility with his ability to operate out wide on both the left and right wings alongside his natural centre-forward position, making him a valuable player to have in the building.

Finally, Abraham has bagged three senior trophies during his career so far, including winning the Champions League with the Blues, so he would be able to bring a much-needed winning mentality to Goodison Park.

Spurs: Luka Modric would replace Bentancur

Tottenham Hotspur were dealt a hammer blow mid-way through February, as one of their star midfield generals Rodrigo Bentancur was ruled out for the foreseeable future, and more recently underwent successful ACL surgery.

The Uruguayan had established himself as a stalwart in the engine room for the Lilywhites and struck up a fine partnership with the ever-present Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

They will now go without his talents, leaving a gaping hole to potentially be filled by one of their younger prospects.

However, it may leave fans reminiscing of days when they boasted a wealth of midfield talent, and, little did they know it, a player who would go on to become one of the best central midfielders of all time.

Luka Modric has starred for Real Madrid ever since his move, and would be the undisputed perfect man to replace the injured 25-year-old.

How did Luka Modric play for Spurs?

Despite enduring a slow start to life in north London, the Croatian soon became a mainstay under Harry Redknapp operating from left or central midfield.

Even Andre Villas-Boas, who was the Chelsea boss at the time, seemed to recognise the sparkling future he boasted as he branded him “one of the greatest talents in the world.”

Despite this, it took two years for him to truly ignite his career, which would only continue to improve. This culminated in his £30m move to the Spanish capital, where he would later win five Champions Leagues, three La Liga titles and a Ballon d’Or whilst also leading his country to a World Cup final.

Those exploits with Croatia led journalist Usher Komugisha to label him “a legend of the game”. This was supported by Liam Canning, who also wrote that he: “Makes football look so easy. World-class.”

The 37-year-old accomplished such feats with immense class and finesse, maintaining a metronomic presence in the engine room.

When compared to other midfielders across Europe he ranks in the top 1% for assists, 10% for shot-creating actions, 5% for passes attempted and the top 4% for progressive passes, via FBref.

There are few better to have graced the field than Modric in recent years, and to pair him with the 1.5 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per 90 of Hojbjerg would be a match made in heaven.

The mere idea of him gracing Spurs’ starting side again is tantalising with the Bentancur-shaped hole that now desperately needs filling. Indeed, had he still been at the club, he would have undoubtedly fixed the issues facing Conte and Stellini this term.

For now, however, they will have to continue to watch on as the Croat dazzles in the Spanish capital.

Leeds: Corberan can revive Bamford

Leeds United seem to have identified their top managerial target…

What’s the word?

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who issued an update on the Whites’ search following yesterday’s dismissal of Jesse Marsch.

The Italian journalist took to Twitter to write:

“Leeds United have included West Brom coach Carlos Corberan in the list as one of the candidates to replace Jesse Marsch as new manager. #LUFC Understand Leeds want coach for long term project and conversations are now ongoing.”

With the Spaniard boasting history at Elland Road as ex-U23s boss and as Marcelo Bielsa’s first-team coach, plus impressive pedigree following his work in the Championship, he could mark a fine appointment to help drag them out of their current predicament.

Corberan can revive Bamford

The 39-year-old has not been in management long but is already extremely well thought of among the wider football community, particularly in England.

His exploits in nearly promoting Huddersfield Town were initially impressive, but having since gone on to completely transform a previously relegation-threatened West Bromwich Albion now too, his accolades only grow.

During his short stay at the Hawthorns, arguably his biggest feat was to sort out their goalscoring issue.

Taking over from Steve Bruce, the Baggies had only scored over two goals in a game once and sat in the relegation zone.

Since Corberan’s arrival, his side have lost just four times in 16 matches in all competitions, winning 11 and scoring 26 times. He boasts a stunning points-per-game average of 2.13.

This was in no small part to the way in which he nurtured Daryl Dike back to health, with the American having suffered greatly from injuries before Corberan arrived.

The former Olympiakos boss was patient, and now with two goals in his last four games, the 22-year-old is seeking to repay the favour.

Should he join Leeds, there will be hope that he can reignite Patrick Bamford, who too has seen his recent years blighted by various ailments.

Whilst he seems to have somewhat recaptured that fitness of late, getting him confident and up to speed is another thing entirely. His goalscoring form could be imperative in the retention of their Premier League status, with the 29-year-old likely hopeful of emulating his 17-goal and eight-assist campaign from the 2020/21 season.

Having already been lauded as “outstanding” by former Portsmouth and Huddersfield Town boss Danny Cowley, Corberan could once again prove this by taking up the offer of a move to Leeds and firing them to safety.

He fits the mould of an exciting young coach poised for a long-term role at a club like the Yorkshire outfit and given his ties to Bielsa his connection only grows. He is the obvious appointment, but he must look to first revive Bamford to give himself the best chance of success.
