Pollard and Cottrell blow Lahore Qalandars away

Earlier this week, Lahore Qalandars coach Aqib Javed told ESPNcricinfo about how other teams in the PSL prioritised power hitters, while Qalandars wanted to go for the best bowlers. Here, Multan Sultans demonstrated to them the value of power hitters lower down the order, as Kieron Pollard and Tim David dug deep against an imperious Qalandars bowling showing to post 160. Sultans then went about taking apart the defending champions’ batting line-up in astonishing fashion, with Sheldon Cottrell blowing away the top order as Qalandars folded for 76, the third-lowest total in PSL history. It sealed Sultans’ place in the PSL final for the third successive season – the first team to do that – while Qalandars drop down into Friday’s eliminator to keep their title defence intact.Chasing a total down against Qalandars’ bowling line-up has become the most daunting challenge in the PSL, and Sultans were sensible enough to be flexible. They won the toss and batted first for the first time this season, and just the fifth time in their history. But they tend to pick these moments well; they won three of the previous four.Related

  • Aqib Javed: 'We wanted the best bowling unit, everyone else is after the best hitters'

  • Miller: 'I've really enjoyed challenging myself against the PSL death bowlers'

That victory seemed anything but assured for much of the first innings, with Qalandars at their imperious best with the ball, stifling Sultans in the first 15 overs. The average first innings score this season here was 193, but it became obvious fairly soon the Sultans wouldn’t get anywhere near that. They managed just 46 in the powerplay, and while Qalandars hadn’t picked up any wickets, it didn’t seem as if they needed to.Haris Rauf, at his fearsome fastest, struck the first blow, though the ball he cleaned Usman Khan up with was a slower one. Zaman Khan got rid of a scratchy Rilee Rossouw cheaply, a huge wicket, particularly given Rossouw’s imperious record against Qalandars. Rashid Khan prised Mohammad Rizwan out with a wrong’un to reduce the Sultans to 90 for three, and Qalandars only tightened their grip on the game.Sheldon Cottrell celebrates with his signature salute after a top-order wicket•PCB

It was a sensational lower order counterattack from Pollard that dug his side out of a hole, though it wasn’t without its chances. Sam Billings dropped a skier fairly early on in the onslaught, with Shaheen Afridi and Hussain Talat missing chances to get rid of him. In the meantime, he was grinding through the gears, pushing up Sultans total to a defensible level, never more so than when he powered three sixes off Shaheen in the penultimate over; the 20 the Qalandars captain conceded made it his most costly PSL over. It also brought up a 33-ball 50 for Pollard, winning him the Player-of-the-Match award.Haris hit back with a scintillating final six balls, hitting speeds in excess of 150 regularly and cleaning up both Pollard and Khushdil Shah. It saw just six runs scored and clawed a bit of momentum Qalandars’ way, turning the task over to the batters. But Cottrell, newly arrived at the PSL, wrenched the game out of Qalandars’ hands before they’d even had the opportunity to get the chase off the ground. A double-strike in his second over, making prodigious use of inswing to the right-handers, put paid to both Mirza Baig and Abdullah Shafique, while Anwar Ali from the other end seamed one beautifully to knock back the top of Fakhar Zaman’s off stump. Cottrell wasn’t done with the ambush yet, returning to dispatch Shaheen with a wild swing off the second ball he faced finding Usman Khan at cover. There was more trauma about to be inflicted on a shell-shocked Qalandars. Pollard, their tormentor in chief with the bat, saw two wickets fall in his first over, sloppy running catching Talat out before a sensational running catch from Abbas Afridi brought the curtains down on Sikandar Raza.Qalandars’ thoughts were already turning to Friday’s eliminator. Billings and Rashid fell in quick succession, before a few lusty blows from David Wiese and Rauf gave a packed, partisan home crowd something to cheer for. It was to be ephemeral, however, with Abbas Afridi delivering the knockout blow as Haris feathered one through to the keeper.Sultans were thrashed in last year’s PSL final by this very opposition. But this was a step towards ensuring they might not even need to meet them at that stage one more time.

Value soared 1,823%: Leeds hit the jackpot with star they signed for £1.3m

Leeds United are currently on course to seal automatic promotion to the Premier League from the Championship at the second attempt under Daniel Farke.

A win over Sheffield United on Monday night will take them five points clear of the Blades in second place and seven points clear of Burnley in third.

Pascal Struijk’s heroics against Sunderland last time out ensured that the West Yorkshire outfit remained at the top of the division, as he came off the bench to strike twice late on at Elland Road.

Leeds’ form in the Championship this season is a credit to Farke, his coaching staff, and the recruitment team after the club lost several key players last summer.

Crysencio Summerville, Georginio Rutter, Archie Gray, and Glen Kamara, who were all regular starters last term, were sold ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, and the Whites have adjusted brilliantly, as shown by their position in the table .

Despite losing four brilliant players, Leeds have managed to build a squad that still has a number of incredibly valuable assets – and one that is thriving on the pitch.

Leeds United's most valuable players

The Championship leaders may have lost the likes of Summerville and Rutter but their respective departures provided other stars with the chance to step up and show their value to the team.

Dan James, for example, has stepped up with an excellent return of ten goals and six assists in the Championship so far this season, and he is among the team’s most valuable players.

The Wales international is currently valued at £13.2m by Transfermarkt and only one player, Wilfried Gnonto, is worth more than him within the current squad.

£13.2m

Ethan Ampadu

£13.2m

Pascal Struijk

£13.2m

Illan Meslier

£13.2m

As you can see in the table above, all five of the most valuable players in the squad at the moment are stars who were already at Elland Road prior to this season, which shows that previous investments made by the recruitment team are now paying off.

The Whites have made millions by investing in young talent and then selling them on for a significant profit in recent years, with Raphinha possibly being the best example of that.

Spanish giants Barcelona swooped in to secure his services for a fee of £55m in the summer of 2022, two years after Leeds had snapped him up from Rennes for a fee of £17m.

In the same summer that they signed Raphinha, in 2020, the Whites also made a move to bring a teenage forward to Elland Road from Dutch club Feyenoord as a signing for the U21 squad at first.

That player was, you guessed it, Crysencio Summerville and the young dynamo had to fight to make his way into the first-team in West Yorkshire.

Crysencio Summerville's development at Leeds United

The Whites reportedly paid a fee of just £1.3m to sign the 18-year-old attacker from Feyenoord, which meant that it was a relatively low-risk investment for the club.

Summerville linked up with the U21s in the 2020/21 campaign and caught the eye with his performances at the top end of the pitch, as he contributed with six goals and six assists in 12 appearances in the Premier League 2.

Leeds winger Crysencio Summerville

The Dutch magician was then handed his senior Premier League debut for Leeds against Newcastle in September 2021, and went on to make six appearances in the top-flight in the 2021/22 season.

Jesse Marsch made him a first-team regular, with 28 league outings, in the 2022/23 campaign but it was a year to forget from a club perspective, as they were relegated to the Championship.

As you can see in the table above, Summerville then starred in the second tier for the Whites in the following season, as he showcased his quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals on a regular basis.

The dynamic forward’s incredible form in the Championship propelled Leeds to third place in the league and to the final of the play-offs, only for the team to lose 1-0 to Southampton at Wembley – costing them promotion.

Once Leeds failed to earn promotion, via the automatic spots or the play-offs, it seemed inevitable that Summerville would be on his way out of Elland Road, which is exactly what happened.

Leeds struck gold with Crysencio Summerville

Last summer, after the Whites lost to the Saints in the capital, Premier League side West Ham United swooped in to sign the Dutch ace for a reported fee of £25m, with further add-ons that could earn Leeds more money.

Market Movers

Excluding any potential further add-ons in the future, the club made a gigantic profit on Summerville as his value soared by a staggering 1,823% during his time at Elland Road – going from £1.3m to £25m.

This shows that Leeds hit the jackpot when they signed the teenager from Feyenoord back in the summer of 2020, as they landed a brilliant player who performed superbly in the Championship, and they made a significant amount of money off his talent.

Unfortunately, though, Summerville has only scored one goal in 19 appearances in the Premier League so far this season for the Hammers, which shows that the 23-year-old star has yet to translate his second tier form over to the top-flight.

As you can see in the table above, the former Leeds magician has ranked poorly among his positional peers in the division in several key attacking statistics.

Summerville, who has been described as an “exciting” talent by pundit Frank McAvennie, still has plenty of time on his hands, at the age of 23, to develop and improve, though, and he could go on to be a success for West Ham in the future.

For now, however, Leeds have hit the jackpot with Summerville because they made a huge profit on him and, on current form, it does not look likely that the Hammers will go on to sell him for even more than the £25m they paid for his services.

NCL Week 4: Zakir Hasan double-hundred keeps Sylhet on top

Musfik Hasan becomes the third quick to take an eight-for in Bangladesh domestic first-class history

Things are even tighter in Tier-2 where only six points separate three teams. Rajshahi Division went back to the top with an innings-and-68-run win over Barishal Division while Dhaka Metropolis defeated Khulna Division by four wickets.Best batters
Zakir Hasan became the first wicketkeeper-captain to score a double-hundred in domestic first-class cricket in Bangladesh. He made 213 in Sylhet’s drawn game against Chattogram, having struck 18 fours and two sixes during his seven-and-a-half-hour stay. Zakir added 176 runs for the fifth wicket with Asadulla Al Galib.Veterans Jahurul Islam and Junaid Siddique struck centuries as they added 333 runs for the first wicket for Rajshahi against Barishal. It is the fourth-highest opening stand in first-class cricket in Bangladesh, with Jahurul top-scoring with 177 that included 17 fours and a six. Junaid made 149 with 15 fours and a six, while Pritom Kumar also added 101 off 89 balls with five fours and a six. Rajshahi’s 508 for 8 declared is the highest total so far in the 2022-23 season.Best bowlers
Musfik Hasan became only the third fast bowler in Bangladesh domestic first-class history to take an eight-wicket haul. His figures of 8 for 73 helped set up Rangpur’s victory over Dhaka. Before Musfik, only Talha Jubair and Ruyel Miah had taken eight-fors.Sohel Rana, too, helped Rangpur with his five-wicket haul, while Dhaka’s Sumon Khan also took a five-for in this game.Offspinner Mahedi Hasan took career-best match figures of 10 for 105 in Khulna’s defeat to Dhaka Metro. Sylhet’s veteran left-arm spinner Nabil Samad continued his excellent form with eight wickets in the match against Chattogram. Meanwhile, Rajshahi’s seamer Nahid Rana took 5 for 62 against Barishal.Best match
Rangpur’s 73 all out is the second-lowest total in Bangladesh after which a team went on to win a first-class game. Rangpur first bowled out Dhaka for 84 but themselves fell eleven runs short in the first innings. But Musfik’s eight-wicket haul in 17.5 overs got Dhaka bowled out for 199 runs, with only Mahidul Islam making a half-century. Rangpur, however, had the experienced Suhrawadi Shuvo, who made a patient 72 as they overhauled the fourth-innings target of 211 runs in 65.3 overs.Points to ponder
Sylhet are holding on to the lead in the Tier-1 points table, with two rounds of matches remaining. Rangpur could pose a last-minute threat to their maiden title aspirations. In Tier-2, Rajshahi regained pole position with Barishal behind them, but the big news is giants Khulna only have two points, having been bowled out for 64, their second-lowest total in NCL history, against Dhaka Metro.Players to watch
Musfik, the tall hit-the-deck bowler from Rangpur, is attracting a lot of attention with his style of bowling. He was not really impressive in the Under-19s and in the Dhaka Premier League last season, but has also taken17 wickets in the NCL so far, including the eight-wicket haul in this round.

He’s better than Archer: Leeds chasing late move for "exquisite" star

The January transfer window, despite it already being February, officially slams shut on Monday and this means that Leeds United are running out of time if they want to make any additions to their squad.

Yorkshire Evening Post reporter Graham Smyth revealed before kick-off on Saturday that the Whites remain interested in a deal to sign Cameron Archer from Premier League side Southampton.

The journalist stated that the club are hoping for a domino effect that will lead to the former Aston Villa centre-forward ending up at Elland Road before the deadline.

Leeds, however, are now eyeing another Premier League number nine who could come in as an even better option than the Southampton man.

Leeds chasing Chelsea striker

According to the printed edition of The Sun, as relayed by MOT Leeds News, the Whites are chasing a late move for Chelsea centre-forward Marc Guiu.

The report claims that the Spanish striker, who joined the Blues on a permanent deal from Barcelona last summer, is set to move on from Stamford Bridge on loan before Monday’s deadline.

Marc Guiu

It states that Leeds are keen on a swoop to bring the teenage marksman to Elland Road, whilst West Bromwich Albion and Middlesbrough have also been linked with an interest in him.

Daniel Farke and the board must, now, push to win the race for the 19-year-old star’s services before the end of the window, because he could be an excellent addition to the group.

Why Guiu would be even better than Archer

Archer has struggled badly in the Premier League for Southampton so far this season, with a return of two goals from 4.44 xG in 21 league appearances.

This comes after the English attacker scored four goals from 5.62 xG in 30 appearances in the top-flight on loan at Sheffield United in the 2023/24 campaign, which means that he has scored six goals from 10.06 xG since the start of last season.

Guiu has only made two substitute appearances for Chelsea in the Premier League, with Nicolas Jackson, but he has proven his quality in Europe, shining in the Conference League.

The Spanish marksman, who scored one goal in three games in LaLiga for Barcelona last term, has shown that he can offer more than Archer with his clinical finishing in Europe.

As you can see in the table above, Guiu has been on fire in the Conference League as a ruthless number nine for Chelsea, outperforming his xG by almost three goals.

The Leeds target, who was hailed for an “exquisite” goal earlier this season by Joe Cole, appears to have the finishing quality to make the most of the chances that come his way, whilst Archer has consistently underperformed in front of goal over the past 18 months.

Therefore, Guiu could be an even better signing than the Southampton man because he has the clinical finishing ability to thrive in a Leeds team that creates plenty, as shown by the 7-0 win over Cardiff on Saturday.

Stead hails 'pretty special' Phillips and power-packed middle order

Since the start of 2020, no middle-order batter (Nos. 4 to 7) has scored more runs in men’s T20Is than Glenn Phillips’ 746. And of the 16 middle-order batters who have scored 500 or more runs in this period, he has the second-best average (39.26) and the third-best strike rate (151.62).Phillips has scored three fifties in his last seven T20I innings, most recently on Friday when he made 76 off 41 balls to set up a crushing New Zealand win in their second T20I against West Indies in Kingston. New Zealand coach Gary Stead has been hugely impressed with Phillips’ contributions, not just with the bat but also his catching – he’s taken four catches in the first two T20Is – and speed across the outfield.Related

“Glenn burst on to the scene a year or so ago now, and scored a great hundred at Mount Maunganui versus West Indies, and since then just keeps making every post a winner. His batting’s been fantastic, he’s got good power, but then you couple that with what he can do in the field, it’s pretty special as well. He’s taken a lot of catches this tour, but the speed he has saves us runs on the field too.Glenn Phillips scored 76 off 41 balls in the second T20I against West Indies•Associated Press

It isn’t just Phillips who has sparkled in New Zealand’s middle order during this West Indies tour. James Neesham and Daryl Mitchell have also played vital finishing knocks in the first two T20Is.”It’s a nice luxury when you look around [the dressing room],” Stead said. “Guys like Jimmy Neesham, the way he finished that first game was fantastic, coming in and scoring 33 off 15. Daryl Mitchell showed his power in the second game, striking at 200 or a little bit more [48 in 20] as well. We’ve got Michael Bracewell, who played the last game, who adds power, and [we’re] yet to see Mitchell Santner [show his skills on this tour], and we saw what he can do in the Netherlands as well [where he scored an unbeaten 42-ball 77 in the second T20I].”In both their matches on this Caribbean tour so far, New Zealand batted first and scored 180-plus totals, finishing with a flourish after solid starts anchored by Devon Conway (43 and 42). Stead was pleased with the way New Zealand’s batters have handled slow, turning conditions in Kingston.”The wickets have been interesting,” he said. “They look like they take a wee bit of turn, and they’ve sort of held a wee bit. The way our guys have come in and batted around usually one person in the innings has been great, and the thing that’s been pleasing that we’ve done is our match-ups have been very good and we’ve taken those on wholeheartedly.”

Alex Hales' 91 fires Nottinghamshire to thumping win over Derbyshire

Opener hits 12 fours and five sixes to leave home side’s total looking underpowered

A stunning display of muscular hitting from Alex Hales powered Notts Outlaws to a seven-wicket Vitality Blast win over Derbyshire Falcons at Derby.Hales demolished the bowling, smashing 12 fours and five sixes in a superb 91 which came off only 33 balls. He dominated an opening stand of 119 from 51 balls with Joe Clarke as Outlaws chased down Falcons’ 178 in the 18th over.Leus du Plooy top scored with 51 and Wayne Madsen made 40 but Jake Ball pegged the Falcons back by taking three wickets in the final over to finish with 4 for 40.Falcons started slowly after being put in but took flight when Luis Reece pulled James Pattinson for two sixes in the fourth over which cost 20. Shan Masood relied on pure timing to ease Matt Carter through the covers for four and the Falcons skipper scored three more boundaries when Ball returned in the last over of the powerplay.Falcons were motoring at 60 for 0 but Outlaws slammed on the brakes when Calvin Harrison bowled Masood for 33 from 23 balls as he stepped away to cut.the legspinner.Reece went for 27 in the next over, stumped charging Samit Patel, and the spinners conceded only 24 from four overs to leave Falcons on 84 for 2 at the halfway point of the innings.Pattinson and Steven Mullaney kept up the pressure but Madsen reverse swept Matt Carter for six before du Plooy drove the offspinner over the ropes at long on with 17 coming from the 14th over. du Plooy went to 50 off 33 balls before he failed to beat Dan Christian’s throw from cover but Madsen drove and pulled Ball for three consecutive fours in the 18th over.Ball responded by bowling Madsen but Harry Came lifted Pattinson over the midwicket boundary as 15 came from the penultimate over.Ball took three wickets and conceded only four runs in a superb final over to keep Falcons under 180 but what looked a competitive total was shredded by Hales. He launched the chase by driving Sam Conners for two fours and then swept Mark Watts for six before tucking into George Scrimshaw. The fast bowler was pulled for six and driven for three fours with 20 coming from the fourth over and another 18 came from the next over as Hales raced to 50 off only 18 balls.Hales took Conners apart in the sixth over, smashing a six and four fours to take Outlaws to 95 for 0 at the end of the powerplay. He drove Matt McKiernan for two more sixes but the legspinner broke the stand in the ninth over when Clarke swept him to deep square leg.Hales’s brutal innings ended when he skied Scrimshaw to long leg but Outlaws now needed just 52 from the last 10 overs. Scrimshaw removed Ben Duckett but Patel completed 25,000 career runs in all formats as Outlaws cruised home with 17 balls to spare.

Amad 2.0: Amorim could unleash Man Utd teen who’s outscoring Obi-Martin

Ruben Amorim has been an instant hit during the opening few matches of his Manchester United tenure, winning two of his first three outings in all competitions.

His 3-4-2-1 system has quickly been taken on board by the first team, leading to their upturn in results over the last couple of weeks.

The 39-year-old’s tactical tweaks have allowed many players to reignite their careers at Old Trafford, with the side looking a completely different proposition to what they did under former boss Erik ten Hag.

Erik ten Hag

Bruno Fernandes has been operating in a more advanced number 10 role behind the lone striker, a shift that has benefitted his goal combinations dramatically already.

The Portuguese has starred under his compatriot, registering two assists in the recent win over Everton, taking his tally to two goals and five assists in the Premier League.

However, it’s the form of one player who has dramatically improved, now looking to be a bargain at his price tag after failing to gain a consistent run of matches under the former regime.

Amad Diallo’s stats since Amorim’s appointment

Ivorian winger Amad Diallo joined United in a £37m deal way back in 2021 but has had to bide his time before making an impact on the first team at Old Trafford.

He’s been on two separate loan spells to Rangers and Championship side Sunderland, before returning last season – with his most memorable moment coming in the FA Cup clash with rivals Liverpool, scoring the winner in extra time.

The now 22-year-old has only made three league starts this season, but two of which have come since the appointment of Amorim in matches against Ipswich Town and Everton.

However, the new manager’s trust in Diallo has been massively rewarded, with the youngster taking to his new right wing-back role like a duck to water.

In his first two matches in the aforementioned position, he’s registered three assists, taking his tally of goal contributions to eight in all competitions – with Fernandes only achieving a higher tally to date.

His ability to work tirelessly down the flank has made him the perfect fit for the new boss’ philosophy, as demonstrated with his pressure leading to Joshua Zirkzee’s second strike at the weekend.

However, there’s another reason to be excited for the supporters, especially considering the club have another talent in their academy who can emulate Amad’s rapid rise under Amorim.

Man United's next Amad Diallo

Striker Chido Obi-Martin has caught the eye in recent months for his goalscoring talents after his move from Arsenal in the summer.

The 17-year-old has starred for the club’s U18 side despite his tender age, dominating opposition defenders and causing havoc, helping the Red Devils youngsters sit top of their division.

He registered a total of 32 goals in 18 matches for the Gunners last season, before scoring a hat-trick on his debut for United against Nottingham Forest a couple of weeks ago.

Obi-Martin has since added two more goals, with his latest against Stoke City breaking the record for the most goals scored by a player in the U18s Premier League, previously held by Ellis Simms.

However, the form of teammate James Scanlon has seen him already outscore the impressive Obi Martin this season, despite operating in a wide role rather than a central position.

The winger, who’s previously been dubbed as “terrific” by journalist George Smith, has already notched ten goals and four assists in his nine U18 outings – five more than Obi-Martin – which has seen him earn an international call-up.

Scanlon, who’s made 10 appearances for Gibraltar despite being just 18, has showcased excellent talents in attacking areas, similar to that for Diallo before his shift in position to a wing-back role.

Given the form of Fernandes in the central attacking position, should he be given the opportunity to star in the first team, he could feature in a wide role and follow in the footsteps of the Ivorian.

The youngster’s versatility in being able to feature on either wing, coupled with his ability with both feet could make him a valuable option for Amorim in the years to come.

A left-sided role has been a problem position for various managers at Old Trafford, but instead of dipping into the transfer market, they could delve into their youth system with Scanlon having the tools to make a positive impression on the side.

The teenager may have to make his first impression count should he make the jump, but given his impressive form since his transfer from Derby County in 2021, he could well be ready to star in the Premier League in the near future.

Shelley Nitschke named Australia's interim head coach as Matthew Mott leaves with 'heavy heart'

Shelley Nitschke has been named interim head coach of the Australia women’s team after Matthew Mott’s era-defining stint came to an end with “a heavy heart” to take the white-ball role with the England men’s set-up.Nitschke will take charge for the T20I tri-series in Ireland in June which also features Pakistan then the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. It buys CA time to appoint a new full-time coach ahead of the home season although Nitschke will be well placed to take the job.She was appointed assistant coach of the Australian women’s team in 2018, having previously spent time with South Australia and Adelaide Strikers. In 2019, she took charge of Perth Scorchers in the WBBL, leading the team to its maiden WBBL title last summer. On leaving his position, Mott said he felt “honoured” to have been in the Australia role for a seven-year period which in recent years has brought unprecedented success with back-to-back T20 World Cup titles and the ODI World Cup last month in New Zealand.”I leave with a heavy heart but with so many wonderful memories,” he said. “The on-field success is well documented but it’s the lifelong friendships that I’ve formed that resonate most with me.
