Ish Sodhi, the Northern Knights legspinner, has said that the performances of his side in the Champions League T20 were along expected lines after their intense preparations before the tournament

While most of the attention in the Champions League T20 has been on the IPL franchises, Northern Knights have emerged as the team to beat after dominant performances in the qualifiers and a comprehensive victory in their first group game. The results may have surprised a few people but Ish Sodhi, the Knights legspinner, insisted they were the outcome of the team’s intense preparations in the run-up to the tournament.”We haven’t surprised ourselves at all. We have been preparing hard for this tournament for a long time,” Sodhi told ESPNcricinfo. “Most of our players had been busy playing some tournament or the other before we came here. And then we had an intense weeklong preparatory camp in Bangalore, which helped us get the best combination going. All sorts of combinations that we have tried have worked for us.”After thumping their opponents, including defending champions Mumbai Indians, in the qualifiers, Knights carried the form into the group stage and beat Cape Cobras in their first match. The core players – Kane Williamson, Scott Styris, Trent Boult and Tim Southee – have made crucial contributions, while others like Anton Devcich have supported their efforts well. Williamson has been the standout performer for the team, with 220 runs in four games, including a century [the fastest in CLT20] and two fifties and Sodhi said Williamson’s 49-ball 101 against Cobras was a “wonderful knock, especially with all the clinical strokes he played all over the ground”.If Northern Districts sign off their prolonged stay in Raipur with a fifth consecutive victory, against Hobart Hurricanes, they will boost their chances of making it to the knock-outs. Since 2011, when the qualifying stage was introduced to the Champions League T20, no team starting in the qualifiers has won the tournament. Sodhi said Knights were not too worried about that trend.”It’s too early to think about it. All that we are thinking is to keep delivering the way we have been and the results will follow,” he said. “We have a protocol of not thinking too much about the future.”In the last year, Sodhi has played eight Tests and two T20Is for New Zealand but has not yet cemented his place in the team and his bowling average of 47 in first-class cricket and 46 in Tests has come under scrutiny. The India-born spinner, however, said he was not bothered too much by criticism against him.”I think criticism is always going to be there. It’s not been that difficult to deal with and I don’t start to lose my sleep over it,” Sodhi said. “Hopefully I can continue and keep doing the things that I am and improve my stats. What matters more is what my team-mates think in the nets, more than anything else. That [criticism] doesn’t really bother me.”Sodhi admitted he is still a long way from becoming a “finished product” as a bowler and cricketer and hoped he could accomplish that goal over the next few years.”Being a part of three Test series victories, winning the Twenty20 competition with my domestic team and now being here for the Champions League has surely helped me start understanding my game a little bit better each day,” he said. “I am looking forward to keep improving and I hope I can be a finished product as a bowler and as a cricketer. It will not come for another few years.”

O Botafogo segue buscando maneiras de preencher a lacuna deixada pela saída de Erik, que assinou com o Yokohama Marinos-JAP na última sexta-feira. Este fator explica a importância de Rhuan para a equipe sub-20. O camisa 10, atuando preferencialmente pelos lados do campo, é um dos principais jogadores do time e se destaca pelos dribles curtos e cobranças de falta, uma de suas especialidades.

É importante ressaltar que o fator de Rhuan ter sido promovido não impede que ele retorne de forma esporádica ao time de base. O meio-campista pode ‘descer’ e jogar pelo time sub-20 toda vez que o departamento profissional entender que é importante manter ritmo de jogo ou em jogos cruciais do time, como, por exemplo, esse duelo diante do Flamengo.

Eduardo Barroca já elogiou Rhuan publicamente e, enquanto a diretoria analisa o mercado em busca de uma oportunidade de contratação, o atleta vai, pelo menos, treinar com mais frequência no time principal, podendo aparecer em lista de relacionados em jogos do Campeonato Brasileiro no futuro.

نجح فريق الكرة الأول بنادي مودرن فيوتشر، في تسجيل الهدف الثالث أمام نظيره سينيجيدا التنزاني ببطولة الكونفدرالية.

المباراة تقام الآن على ملعب استاد السلام في إطار مواجهات جولة الإياب من دور الـ32 ببطولة الكونفدرالية الإفريقية.

ويشارك فريق مودرن فيوتشر في البطولة القارية، بعد أن نجح في احتلال المركز الرابع في سلم ترتيب بطولة الدوري الموسم الماضي.

وسجل هدف فيوتشر الثالث، الظهير عمر كمال عبد الواحد، بعد تدرج رائع بالكرة وتسديدة من داخل منطقة الجزاء في الدقيقة 66.

وكان فيوتشر قد تقدم بالهدف الأول في الدقيقة الخامسة من عمر اللقاء، عن طريق المهاجم أحمد عاطف مستغلًا تمريرة أحمد رفعت.

The board has put out a call for a national assistant coach and a national team physiotherapist, posts which were left vacant by the promotion of Stephen Mangongo in July and the resignation of Amato Machikicho in January.Although Mangongo has only gone two months without an assistant, Machikicho, was not replaced previously, leaving the set-up without a key medical staff member. Machikicho had worked with ZC for 18 years since 1996, initially only as a travelling physiotherapist and then permanently from 1999. His departure, which he, at the time, told was “for family reasons and just to move away and secure other opportunities elsewhere”, fuelled speculation that ZC’s cash-flow crisis was taking its toll.In July, when Peter Chingoka stood down after more than two decades as ZC’s chairperson and a restructure had the captaincy split between Brendan Taylor and Elton Chigumbura, and Andy Waller moved to an overseeing role while Mangongo was named head coach, ZC’s shifting sands pointed to more financial instability. But, with central contracts signed, domestic player contracts also confirmed and ZC sending out a call for applications, they appear to be on steadier ground but could still encounter difficulty in finding suitable candidates.An insider previously told ESPNcricinfo that one of the toughest challenges cricket in Zimbabwe faces is a lack of local coaches, which is the likeliest place they would search for Mangongo’s assistant. Grant Flower and Heath Streak, who worked as batting and bowling coach respectively, have both moved on to jobs abroad. Flower is Pakistan’s batting coach while Streak is with Bangladesh and has also started his own academy outside Bulawayo. Gary Brent, who was coaching at Zimbabwe’s academy, was not offered a renewal on his contract until after he had found other employment.ZC may yet to be able to attract international applicants as they did when a cash-injection in 2009 allowed a selection of big names, including Jason Gillespie, Alan Donald and Monty Lynch, to coach at franchise level but the organisation’s reputation for late and non-payment may scupper those ambitions. Many people who became involved with Zimbabwean cricket during its revival are still owed money and with ZC still deeply in debt to Metbank – one of Zimbabwe’s leading banks – their ability to offer security is compromised. But the recent advertisements hint better days may lie ahead, which will only bode well for Zimbabwe as they continue preparations for next year’s World Cup.

Dale Steyn has said he doesn’t mind going wicketless in the World Cup as long as South Africa win the tournament.”We are just trying to be a part of that puzzle, that when it’s finished, it has a big W on it,” Steyn said on Monday. “It’s nice to have inspiring guys like AB de Villiers and Vernon Philander. Watching AB bat, watching Hashim Amla bat, watching Vern and Morne Morkel perform, it makes you want to be a better player yourself.”I don’t want to be better than them, I just want to be able to participate in a winning side. If I can win that World Cup without taking one wicket, I can still have a winner’s medal around my neck.”Australia and New Zealand will co-host the World Cup, which begins in February, and South Africa will by then have made limited-overs tours of both countries. Looking ahead to both these tours, Steyn recalled South Africa’s defeat to New Zealand in a low-scoring quarter-final at the 2011 World Cup.”New Zealand are a dark horse team whenever there is a tournament around,” he said. “We all know Australia is a good team – they’re in your face all the time, it’s pretty annoying really. New Zealand are one of those teams that can be nowhere for three years and get to a World Cup and they just suddenly turn it on.”For us it’s important that guys like Quinton de Kock go there and familiarise themselves with those conditions, and the players they’re going to be playing against.”Steyn was enthused by the return of Vernon Philander to the ODI team after he had missed South Africa’s tour to Zimbabwe with a hamstring injury.”Vern has that attitude that he’s better than everybody. He does that with the ball, he does that all the time with his ability and skill.”South Africa’s bowling attack at the World Cup is unlikely to include more than one specialist spinner at a time, considering the pitches tend to favour the quicker bowlers, but Aaron Phangiso, the left-arm spinner, has backed himself and the legspinner Imran Tahir to perform even if chosen to bowl in tandem.”We’ve both been doing well,” Phangiso said. “If the coach decides to play both of us, that will be great. Those conditions are known for suiting the fast bowlers, but if both of us play I’d back us to do the job for the team.”We’ve been working on trying to contain as much as possible. It gives the other guys like Dale Steyn a chance to get wickets.”Phangiso played four games in South Africa’s last ODI assignment, a triangular tournament involving Australia and Zimbabwe, and was the team’s most economical bowler, giving away just 3.84 runs an over while picking up five wickets. In the final, he helped South Africa restrict Australia to a total of 217, giving away just 36 runs in his ten overs.”That tour was important for me,” Phangiso said. “It was a real confidence-booster. I’ve been travelling with the side a lot and not getting a lot of opportunities to play. Playing sides like Australia and doing well, and playing a role in beating them in the final meant a lot to me.”
