Battling Zimbabwe hope for turnaround

ESPNcricinfo previews the second ODI between Zimbabwe and New Zealand in Harare

Big PictureAfter the joyous celebration of their victorious return to Test cricket against Bangladesh at the beginning of August, Zimbabwe have awoken in the harsh light of the morning after. Bleary-eyed, smoke-stained, and in possession of an earth-trembling hangover. New Zealand’s examination of their deficiencies has been clinical and unforgiving, and a mid-series turnaround is about as likely as a thunderstorm in the Atacama. Three wickets in three matches is a rather stunning indictment of a bowling attack, even allowing for inexperience, and New Zealand’s middle order batsmen will be beginning to wonder why they were brought on this tour.Or perhaps that is a little harsh on Zimbabwe. A couple of borderline decisions have gone against them on this tour, and with a little more luck they may well have at least been competitive. But patience is an increasingly rare commodity in a fast-paced sport, and Zimbabwe need something inspirational if they are to rise above this familiar plateau. Brendan Taylor’s century on Thursday was apparently not enough, leaving the hosts in serious danger of a second successive series whitewash.Against Bangladesh they were a team inspired, bristling with a sense of belief against well-known opponents. Pakistan’s own flaws and inconsistencies helped give the impression that, even though they might not win, Zimbabwe could well slug it out with some of bigger teams. New Zealand have given them no such quarter, however, and have no reason to expect that Saturday’s match will be any different. The one danger for the visitors is, should Zimbabwe somehow hustle a few wickets, a middle order with little game time under their belts might struggle to assert themselves. That’s hardly the most pressing of problems, though, and the feeling that this series is nothing more than a glorified warm-up for their challenge against a resurgent Australia in December is hard to shake.Form guide(most recent first)
Zimbabwe: LLLLL
New Zealand: WLWLWIn the spotlightIt wasn’t so long ago that Hamilton Masakadza appeared to be just the sort of top-order anchor that Zimbabwe were pining for. Albeit against largely weaker opposition, he scored over 1000 runs in ODIs in 2009 at an average of 43.48. That’s exactly the sort of consistency missing from Zimbabwe at the moment, and after a run of single-figure scores Masakadza will be anxious to make a contribution.Ross Taylor has faced just five deliveries in the three international matches on this tour so far, and will be itching to fill his boots against an increasingly deflated bowling attack. He will also want to make his mark on his first extended run as the full-fledged New Zealand captain. He needs runs as well as wins to do so.Team newsTo whom can Zimbabwe turn? Dropping batsmen would only dent their confidence further, but it might do to tweak the bowling line-up in search of a wicket-taker. Keegan Meth picked up eight scalps in his last match for Matabeleland Tuskers, and could be brought in to take the new ball with Kyle Jarvis.Zimbabwe: (probable) 1 Hamilton Masakadza, 2 Vusi Sibanda, 3 Brendan Taylor (capt), 4 Chamu Chibhabha, 5 Tatenda Taibu, 6 Forster Mutizwa (wk), 7 Elton Chigumbura, 8 Keegan Meth, 9 Prosper Utseya, 10 Ray Price, 11 Kyle JarvisNew Zealand have no real cause to tinker with what has proved a winning combination, and it would be a little unfair to re-shuffle their middle order with hardly any of their batsmen having had a good run in the middle. They will, in all likelihood, look to secure the series before experimenting too much with their line-up.New Zealand (probable) 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Brendon McCullum (wk), 3 Jesse Ryder 4, Ross Taylor (capt), 5 Kane Williamson/Rob Nicol, 6 James Franklin, 7 Nathan McCullum, 8 Jacob Oram, 9 Doug Bracewell, 10 Kyle Mills, 11 Luke WoodcockStats and trivia Brendon McCullum now averages 117.50 against Zimbabwe, across formats. He’s been dismissed just once in his last five international innings against them, while helping himself to 282 runs. His average against them in ODIs is now a whopping 168. Zimbabwe have not won an ODI against New Zealand since January 2001, when their victory at Eden Park also sealed their first away limited-overs series win.

Cosendey celebra espaço no time principal e espera evolução do Vasco

No segundo semestre, o Vasco disputará duas frentes: Copa Sul-Americana e Campeonato Brasileiro.

Another Asif agent shows up at court

Another agent claiming to represent Mohammad Asif was present in court on Tuesday, in a bizarre twist after the court had been led to believe the tainted Mazhar Majeed was his sole representative

Another agent claiming to represent Mohammad Asif was present in court on Tuesday, in a bizarre twist after the court had been led to believe the tainted Mazhar Majeed was his sole representative.Asif, and his former captain Salman Butt, were handed guilty verdicts on what was the 20th and most explosive day of the trial as the jury ruled they had committed both criminal acts with which they were charged – conspiracy to cheat and conspiracy to obtain and accept corrupt payments following the Lord’s Test in August last year. They conspired with agent Mazhar Majeed, teenage fast bowler Mohammad Amir and other people unknown to bowl pre-determined no-balls.Throughout the trial the jury heard evidence that Majeed had managed Asif for a few months before the Lord’s Test. Asif revealed that although Majeed had pestered him to sign the management agreement offered him on the 2010 England tour, he never did. But he also did not reveal any other agent acted for him.Asif also revealed that he was managed by Mazhar’s older brother Azhar from 2006, but said neither brother made him a penny. Asif never did reveal that Majeed was his exclusive global agent but that was the impression that was given. But in an interesting twist on the day of the verdicts, Lahore-based sports agent Salman Ahmed addressed the media on Tuesday outside of Court No.4 and revealed that he was in fact the manager of Asif and also had an understanding with Butt that he could bring him commercial opportunities.”Asif signed a contract with my company (called Portfolio) in December 2008 for three years and that is due to expire in December this year,” Ahmed told ESPNcricinfo. “Obviously there is not much room any more to do any business so it looks like it is the end of the contract effectively.”I had never even heard of Mazhar Majeed or Azhar Majeed until all this fixing stuff came up. I found it really amazing that Majeed was claiming to be his manager yet he never did anything for him. It was my company that assisted Asif getting paid by the Delhi Daredevils and when he had other troubles to deal with.”He added: “Since I realised some time ago that Pakistan players don’t have agent values, I don’t expect any of them to stay loyal to any one agent.”

Vamos continuar com time competitivo.

Australia name unchanged side for Hobart

Daniel Christian will have to put on hold his dreams of a baggy green after Australia named an unchanged side for the second Test in Hobart

Daniel Christian will have to put on hold his dreams of a baggy green after Australia named an unchanged side for the second Test in Hobart. Australia’s captain, Michael Clarke, confirmed on Thursday that the selectors had chosen the same XI that comfortably accounted for New Zealand at the Gabba. The Australians trained on Thursday morning and were greeted by an extremely grassy pitch, which could make batting difficult on the first day. Including Christian would have altered the balance of the team; although he is one of the Sheffield Shield’s leading run scorers this summer, it was his medium-pace bowling that could have swayed selection in his favour in the absence of Shane Watson.”There’s probably a concern there that if your frontline bowlers don’t do the job with the new ball it could be quite a long day,” Clarke said. “But I’m confident. I thought we bowled really well at the Gabba in both innings. I’m confident I can get some overs out of Michael Hussey, myself and David Warner as part-timers. I’m just going to have to make sure I rotate the bowlers the right way and hope we bowl well and field well with the new ball.”[Christian] has had a really good year in first-class cricket, especially with the bat, but we know what he can do with the ball as well. We had a long debate. We feel the team played really well in Brisbane. I’m very keen to stay consistent with a winning team for this second Test match against New Zealand.”Had Christian been included, the two possible scenarios would have been to drop one of the openers – Phillip Hughes has scored 9, 9, 88, 11, 10 and 7 from his past three Tests – and promote Usman Khawaja to open, with Christian to bat at No.6, or to leave out the offspinner Nathan Lyon on a pitch expected to offer plenty for the seamers. However, Clarke was keen to keep Lyon, Australia’s leading wicket taker in the Brisbane victory with match figures of 7 for 88.”The wicket has a lot more grass on it than I have ever seen at Hobart,” Clarke said. “It looks better today than yesterday, no doubt. But I still think there’s a lot of grass on that wicket. I’m looking forward to seeing what it’s like tomorrow morning. I think day one is going to be quite tough for the batters if it’s overcast. Then I’m hoping it will turn into a pretty good wicket. I still see Lyon playing a big part for us as our spinner, probably later in the game than on day one.”Australia 1 Phillip Hughes, 2 David Warner, 3 Usman Khawaja, 4 Ricky Ponting, 5 Michael Clarke (capt), 6 Michael Hussey, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Peter Siddle, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 James Pattinson, 11 Nathan Lyon.

Rod Marsh to coach the coaches

Rod Marsh, the Australia selector, will “coach the coaches” in a newly created Cricket Australia role designed to ensure a unified approach to mentoring players across the states

Rod Marsh, the Australia selector, will “coach the coaches” in a newly created Cricket Australia role designed to ensure a unified approach to mentoring players across the states. In a mild divergence from the Argus review, Marsh will have the oversight originally intended for the head coach, Mickey Arthur. However the duo will work closely on the formulation of strategies to ensure that players emerge through the states with messages about their development that are consistent with those of the national team.”I’ve basically taken one page out from the Argus review in terms of the national coaching system, effectively to say we need to make sure our coaching pathway, or accreditation, and how the coaching philosophy and how it is drilled out throughout the country, is done well,” Pat Howard, the team performance manager, told ESPNcricinfo.”Part of that involves someone that could engage former players and mentoring capacities and where appropriate coaching capacities. There weren’t many blokes I could think of that could do that better than Rod Marsh. His ability to engage with players at all levels is pretty high.”Marsh’s role will also allow him to call in consultants from far and wide when needed, as befits a man with one of the deepest contact books in world cricket. He will work closely with the Centre of Excellence, the subject of much criticism from the states in the interviews that led to the Argus review.”He’s verymuch engaged with trying to connect that, working with Troy Cooley who he’s worked with before at the England academy,” Howard said. “He will work closely with Mickey, he will work closely with Troy Cooley, and hopefully supplementing that his coaching guys with those former players.”The coaching overseer’s position follows on from similar roles Marsh held at the Cricket Academy in Australia in the 1990s, then with England from 2002-05 and more recently with the ICC global academy in Dubai.”I’m looking forward to this role and believe that it will be a nice fit with my position on the National Selection Panel,” Marsh said. “I’ve been coaching cricket for more than 20 years and this is a great opportunity to work with the elite coaches around the country.”It’s important that we develop our coaches as well as our players and this role will include developing a clear coaching pathway from junior teams, to representative teams, right through to the national team level.”
