Crystal Palace: Mitchell a doubt v Chelsea

Crystal Palace left-back Tyrick Mitchell could miss the FA Cup semi-final with Chelsea through injury, according to The Evening Standard.

The Lowdown: Mitchell goes off

Labelled as ‘popular’ by former Eagles boss Roy Hodgson, the defender was forced off against Leicester City in his team’s 2-1 defeat on Sunday.

The 22-year-old has been a key member of Patrick Vieira’s squad during his first season in charge, starting every Premier League game.

However, he had to make way against the Foxes after just 34 minutes with what appeared to be a calf problem, and along with Michael Olise, he could now be in a race against time to feature at Wembley.

The Latest: Nervous wait

The Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick shared a story regarding Mitchell on Monday.

He revealed that the full-back was due for scans on the problem on Monday, with Palace facing a nervous wait on the extent of the damage.

The Verdict: Fingers crossed

As mentioned, Mitchell has been an ever-present figure at Selhurst Park this season, so it would be a major blow if he is unable to feature at Wembley next weekend.

The Palace academy graduate has been their best-performing defender, as per WhoScored, and he is the only senior out-and-out left-back on the books for the Eagles.

Vieira will be keeping everything crossed that Mitchell can recover in time, as otherwise he will have a few selection headaches over the coming days.

In other news: Vieira now wants Parish to bring 25-assist star to Palace; club preparing to lose their player.

Mazhar and players on ACSU lists

It has emegered that “several” of Pakistan’s players have been monitored by the ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) for some time

Less than a day after the sent Pakistan cricket heading towards another crisis more skeletons were tumbling out of the closet as it emerged that “several” of Pakistan’s players have been monitored by the ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) for some time. Cricinfo understands that Salman Butt and Kamran Akmal are part of a group of players the watchdog has been keeping a close eye on.Added to this, influential sources close to the Pakistan team have said Mazhar Majeed, the man at the centre of the spot-fixing scandal that erupted at Lord’s, has also been on the ACSU watchlist but investigations were hindered because he is an agent. “He has been under the scanner for some time. But he is the commercial agent to various players,” said the source. “They are their official player agents who are doing all these endorsements. In that case nobody can question their presence.”And the source added: “There are a number of Pakistan players that have been under the ACSU scanner for a while now.” He pointed out that the exercise was not only a reaction to Pakistan’s ignominious tour of Australia earlier this year where they lost every match, including the controversial second Test at Sydney. At one stage Australia were just 49 ahead with only two wickets in hand, but managed to extend their advantage to 176. Pakistan then floundered badly and raised more than a few eyebrows by the manner in which they folded.Kamran had also managed to drop four catches along with a missed run-out opportunity during Australia’s second innings, and during the post-tour inquiry committee set up by the PCB Inthikab Alam and Aaqib Javed, the head coach and the assistant coach on the tour, raised doubts over Kamran’s gloverwork. That lead to suspicions of match-fixing and Lord Paul Condon, the former head of the ACSU, said that series was being investigated.”We are satisfied that that was a totally dysfunctional tour from a Pakistani point of view, and that dysfunctionality in the dressing room led to players not performing well, and maybe making them potentially underperform deliberately,” Condon told Cricinfo before he retired. “What we still need to establish is whether that was because rival camps wanted to do down captains or potential captains, or whether it was something more serious, doing it for a financial fix.”As disclosed by the NOTW, Majeed allegedly said that Sydney was the last instance where he was involved in fixing a match. “Let me tell you the last Test we did. It was the second Test against Australia in Sydney,” he told the undercover reporter. “Australia had two more wickets left. They had a lead of 10 runs, yeah. And Pakistan had all their wickets remaining. The odds for Pakistan to lose that match, for Australia to win that match, were I think 40 to 1.”We let them get up to 150 then everyone lost their wickets,” Majeed revealed. ”That one we made £1.3 [million]. But that’s what I mean, you can get up to a million. Tests is where the biggest money is because those situations arise.”

Ruthless Raina takes Chennai to final

Suresh Raina more than compensated for the loss of a Powerplay over in an electrifying innings that sealed Chennai Super Kings’ place in the final in Johannesburg

A steady drizzle, a slippery ball, a wet outfield and a shortened game did nothing to dampen the action-packed tenor of the Champions League semi-final between two Indian heavyweights. Suresh Raina more than compensated for the loss of a Powerplay over in an electrifying innings that sealed Chennai Super Kings’ place in the final in Johannesburg. Capitalising on a significantly weakened Royal Challengers Bangalore attack which was deprived of Dale Steyn due to a lower back injury, and with support from M Vijay, Raina treated the sporting crowd to an air show. It propelled Chennai to a massive score and put the game beyond the reach of a line-up even as power-packed as Bangalore’s.The turning point was Steyn’s injury off a superbly-judged catch in the fourth over. Michael Hussey, looking to force the pace after a 153-minute rain delay, tried to loft Vinay Kumar over mid-off where Steyn was stationed. The shot was mistimed and Steyn back-pedalled several yards to snap the catch over his head, but fell backwards in the process. The impact of the fall left him gasping in pain and he had to be helped off the field, robbing Bangalore of the short-ball barrage he would have unleashed in the middle overs, a strategy that had served them well.Raina had little time to settle in with the Powerplay overs running out and the game reduced to 17 overs, but set about getting into his groove against a generous offering of length and short deliveries. Bangalore captain Anil Kumble had to resort to Virat Kohili’s dibbly-dobblies and the medium pace of Dillon du Preez, who was himself a replacement for Jacques Kallis, out due to a neck injury. Raina’s response was ruthless, one that forced Vijay to cede the floor after he had himself set the tone with a couple of imperious pulls off the opening seamers. The onslaught began, ironically, in the over after the Powerplay as two of Kohli’s pitched-up deliveries disappeared over Raina’s favourite zone on the cricket field – the deep-midwicket region. du Preez met the same fate and his attempt to show any spunk with the short ball, as his injured fast-bowling team-mate had so successfully done in previous attempts, was laid to waste. Raina pulled him into the stands over deep square leg. There were a couple of moments when Bangalore could have rebounded against the psychological setback that Steyn’s loss had dealt them. Raina slog-swept Kumble to deep midwicket in the seventh over and Manish Pandey attempted an acrobatic catch but couldn’t hold on. The effort was praiseworthy but incurred Kumble’s wrath as Pandey had walked in a fair distance for that delivery rather than standing at the edge of the rope. In the 11th over from Kumble, Raina attempted the same shot, only to top edge it towards short-fine where Rahul Dravid simply lost the ball and backed out of what would have been a sitter. Kumble, this time, could only react with a cold stare.Vijay’s supporting role in the partnership had its moment in the sun when he smashed du Preez for a six over midwicket. Bangalore’s woes did not abate even after he was dismissed by Vinay in the 12th over; Raina slapped the next ball ferociously into the crowd to bring up his half-century.It only got worse for Bangalore from there, and the helplessness was evident amid further catching lapses, missed run-outs, byes conceded by Robin Uthappa and the spate of no-balls and wides. Cameron White had bowled just once in 37 Twenty20 games but Kumble had no option but to turn to him. Bowling seam-up, White conceded two wides and as many no-balls in an over that yielded 13. The result was worse when Kumble reposed his faith in the final over where Raina deflated White with three fours, all off long-hops.Nor was Kumble spared. On a track and in conditions where he could only hope to skid the ball through, his variations were less potent and Raina cashed in. Two short balls were dispatched for fours in the 15th over and, as if to not deny the Bangalore captain of the treatment meted out to the rest, Raina gave him the customary swipe over cow corner. Kumble’s spell was acrimonious one, Raina’s victory sweet and Bangalore’s woes endless. Not long after, Kohli injured himself taking a catch but he did come back to bat in what soon developed into a hopeless chase. The signs were ominous for Bangalore in the first over of their response. Albie Morkel moved the ball prodigiously, beating the bat with a frequency normally witnessed on the first morning of a Test. The bounce was uneven and amid the mounting pressure, a wicket looked seemingly inevitable. Doug Bollinger snared Dravid off his first ball to an unconvincing drive, Morkel got Uthappa to produce a top-edge and Bollinger returned to undo Ross Taylor with some extra bounce. Kohli fell soon after and at 35 for 4 in the eighth over, there was no coming back. Manish Pandey and Praveen Kumar, though, did display some pyrotechnics of their own to give Bangalore some consolation on an otherwise dispiriting day.

Leeds: Orta plotting Brereton Diaz swoop

Leeds United are interested in a deal to bring Ben Brereton Diaz to Elland Road in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by TEAMtalk, who claim that Leeds United, Brighton & Hove Albion and West Ham United are all keeping a very close eye on the situation of the Blackburn Rovers centre-forward ahead of a potential move at the end of the season.

However, the report goes on to state that, despite the interest of a number of Premier League clubs, the 23-year-old could instead be heading for LaLiga, with Sevilla said to be closing in on a £20m deal for the Stoke-on-Trent born Chile international – although Rovers want slightly more than this figure.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

Speaking about the potential sale of the striker earlier this season, Blackburn manager Tony Mowbray said: “I’m never worried about selling players. What do you think he’s worth, £30m? £40m?

“If a Premier League or LaLiga club, somewhere Ben wants to go, comes and offers us the money that we think is right – I’m not saying we’re in the market to sell Ben Brereton because we hope to keep him here, he helps us stay near the top end of this league and keeps scoring goals – but he’s still only a very young boy.”

“An extraordinary talent”

Considering how impressive Brereton Diaz has been for both Blackburn and Chile over the past 12 months, it is easy to see why Victor Orta would be interested in a deal to bring the striker to Elland Road this summer.

Indeed, over his 34 Championship appearances this season, the £9m-rated forward has been a revelation in the Rovers attack, scoring 21 goals, registering one assist and creating three big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.8 shots and making 0.6 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the £6.5k-per-week hitman who Mowbray dubbed “an extraordinary talent” average a SofaScore match rating of 6.94, ranking him as Blackburn’s seventh-best player in the second-tier of English football.

Furthermore, since being rather surprisingly called up by Chile ahead of the Copa America last summer, the 23-year-old has since gone on to establish himself as something of a national hero, scoring four goals and providing one assist over his 12 appearances for the South American country – something which has seen him become the “face of Pepsi” in Chile.

As such, it is clear to see that Brereton Diaz would make an exceptional addition to Jesse Marsch’s current attacking options at Elland Road, leading us to believe that Orta must do all he can to beat the likes of Brighton, West Ham and Sevilla to the centre-forward’s signing this summer – even if it means spending £20m+ of the club’s transfer budget.

WAPDA complete facile win against Sialkot

A round-up of the third day of the opening round of matches in Division 1 of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Oct-2010

Hammad Azam’s efforts with bat and ball kept National Bank of Pakistan in the running on day three•Getty Images

Water and Power Development Authority completed a thumping innings and 151-run victory against Sialkot at the Jinnah Stadium with a day to spare.Ali Azmat and Ahmed Said, who had stalled Sialkot’s surge with a doughty resistance on the second day, continued their effort well into the third morning. Azmat, who was on 112 overnight, progressed to 130, while Said crossed triple-figures as well, and remained unbeaten when the innings was declared closed at 429 for 8.Trailing by a mammoth 303, Sialkot’s second innings was only marginally better than their first. Sarfraz Ahmed wreaked havoc with a five-wicket haul, while Naved-ul-Hasan and Umaid Asif chipped in with two apiece to derail Sialkot, who were shot out for 152.Habib Bank Limited’s bowlers put their side on course for victory by stumps on the third day, after their batsmen piled on the advantage to finish with a mammoth first-innings lead of 361 against Faisalabad at the Iqbal Stadium. Ahmed Shehzad, unbeaten on 207 overnight, powered along to 254, but Salim Elahi was unable to drive home the advantage as HBL lost three wickets in quick succession following the marathon 371-run association. Their captain Hasan Raza, however, ensured that his side maintained full control, with a quick 69, inclusive of three fours and three sixes, before declaring the innings closed at 533 for 7.Farrukh Shehzad settled into a defensive mode as Faisalabad fought to save the game, accumulating an unbeaten 46 in his near three-hour stay, but HBL made regular breaches from the other end. Qaiser Iqbal departed early, before spinners Danish Kaneria and Mohammad Aslam snared two more wickets to leave Faisalabad 248 runs in arrears with only seven wickets to survive the final day.Islamabad held a slight upper hand against National Bank of Pakistan at the end of the third day’s play at the Diamond Club Ground. Beginning the day at 201 for 5 – 151 short of Islamabad’s first innings effort – NBP’s lower order was unable to make a reasonable dent in the deficit. Nasrullah Khan and Shehzad Azam finished with four wickets each, while Hammad Azam held one end up for with his 61, but NBP still fell 63 runs short of the lead.Hammad was at it again with the ball, snaring two early wickets in Islamabad’s second innings. Mohammad Talha then got into the act, and at 52 for 3, NBP had a strong chance of running through the middle order. Ameer Khan and Ali Sarfraz, however, scuppered their hopes with a crucial 96-run stand to build the lead. Talha struck late in the day, removing both batsmen to give his side an opening, but unless NBP can strike early on the final day, this will be Islamabad’s game to lose.Rawalpindi’s lower order authored a stirring fightback to neutralize Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited’s advantage from the first two days, and leave the game interestingly poised going into the final day at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Resuming at a wobbly 117 for 4 – still three runs short of wiping the first-innings deficit – Rawalpindi were propelled by weighty contributions from Nos. 6, 7 and 8, Babar Naeem, Zahid Mansoor and Adnan Mufti, into a position of strength.Naeem began the resistance along with opener Shoaib Nasir who went on to make 73, before Mansoor took centre-stage. He struck 19 fours and a six in his attractive innings, and added 116 with Mufti, who made 65 off 98 balls. Mohammad Khalil dismissed Mufti to complete his five-wicket haul, but there was no respite for ZTBL who ran into a determined No. 11 in Sadaf Hussain. He played out 101 minutes and 55 balls, helping Mansoor add 65 runs, and take the overall lead to 296. ZTBL have a tricky final day ahead of them, and Rawalpindi will fancy their chances of setting a 300-plus target and pushing for a win.Multan’s lower order failed to capitalise on the strong foundation laid by their top half, and conceded a 72-run first-innings advantage, before their bowlers, led by left-arm spinner Ahmed Raza’s seven-wicket haul, redressed the balance to leave the match against Sui Northern Gas Pipelines delicately balanced at the Multan Cricket Stadium.Resuming their first innings at 226 for 5, Multan ran into a rut as they lost their last five wickets for the addition of only 40 runs. Kashif Naved, unbeaten on 44 overnight, did the bulk of the scoring on the third day but fell six short of a well-deserved hundred. Adil Raza and Yasir Shah were the pick of the bowlers, picking four wickets each as Multan were bowled out for 286.Ahmed Raza got into the act thereafter, continuing from his six-wicket haul in the first innings as SNGPL floundered against his wiles once again. Barring Usman Arshad and Yasir Shah, no one managed to cross 30 as they were bowled out, two short of 200, setting Multan a target of 271. There was to be one final twist in the day’s play, as opener Babar Ali fell to Asad Ali in the three overs of play remaining in the day. With 269 runs to get and nine wickets standing, it is anybody’s game going into day five.
