Vasilis Barkas set to leave in January

Celtic goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas is set to leave Parkhead in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Sky Sports, who claim that a number of Turkish clubs are interested in signing the 27-year-old shot-stopper in the winter market, with Ange Postecoglou believed to be more than happy to part ways with the Greece international.

A further report by The Scotsman also suggested that Celtic are looking to offload the goalkeeper on a permanent basis this January, however, go on to claim that the Bhoys will have to stomach a considerable financial hit on the player they signed for £5m just last summer.

Stealing a living

When Barkas arrived at Parkhead back in the summer of 2020, the expectation surrounding the former AEK Athens goalkeeper was that he would go on to become Celtic’s long-term number one option between the sticks.

However, this has proven to be far from the case, with the £2.52m-rated man failing to impress over his 15 Premiership appearances last season, conceding an average of 0.7 goals and making just one save per game – with these metrics seeing the shot-stopper earn an extremely disappointing seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.79.

Things have not improved for the 27-year-old this season, making just one appearance under the management of Ange Postecoglou, something that would lend weight to Tam McManus’ claim that the £5m spent on the ‘keeper has been a considerable “waste of money” for Celtic.

And, when taking into account Barkas is reported to be earning a whopping £20k-per-week at Parkhead, even if the Bhoys make a loss on his sale this winter, Postecoglou simply must do all he can to rid himself of the goalkeeper, as there is no way around the fact that the Greek goalkeeper is stealing a living in Glasgow.

Mohammad Rameez derails Sialkot

A round-up of the first day’s action of the seventh round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2009-10

Cricinfo staff15-Nov-2009Group BAn astonishing 16 wickets fell on the opening day at the Jinnah Stadium as the Rawalpindi right-arm seamer Mohammad Rameez took 6 for 43 to send Sialkot crashing to 107. The hosts found themselves at an embarrassing 53 for 9, but Naved Arif scored 49 at No.10 to push the score past 100. Only three Sialkot batsmen went past double figures as Rameez wreaked havoc. Rawalpindi made a more assured start but lost four wickets – Arif chipped in with two – and took the first-innings lead. The opening day at the National Ground between the hosts Islamabad and Peshawar was all about three players – Ali Sarfraz, Riaz Afridi and Azam Khan. The ball dominated the bat with 12 wickets falling, and the only batsman to make a significant contribution was Sarfraz, who scored 96 in Islamabad’s total of 256. Afridi, the right-arm seamer took five wickets while Azam, another right-armer, took four to support Afridi. Islamabad’s lower order chipped to beef up the score after a disappointing 111 for 6. Peshawar lost their openers in reply and ended the day at 47 for 2.A combined bowling effort by Lahore Ravi helped bowl out Quetta for 220 at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground. Shahzad Tareen top scored with 68 but he didn’t get decent support from the rest. His knock came off 110 balls with nine fours. Mohammad Irshad was the leading wicket-taker with three wickets while Waqas Ahmed, Junaid Zia and Aamer Hayat took two each. The Lahore openers were unbeaten at stumps.Continuing his good form from the previous game, where he scored an unbeaten 200, Abbottabad captain Adnan Raees made an unbeaten 101 as his team finished on 279 for 9 against Multan in Okara. Opener Fawad Khan also made a significant contribution – 89- and shared a stand of 97 for the third wicket with Mohammad Kashif, before Raees joined him for a bigger stand of 112 for the fifth. When Fawad was dismissed by Ansar Javed, Multan fought back to pick up quick wickets. Javed ended the day with 3 for 65.Group AHabib Bank Limited grabbed the advantage on the first day against Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited in Islamabad. Half-centuries from opener Naeemuddin and captain Azhar Shafiq had taken SNGPL to a comfortable position at 149 for 2, but a collective bowling display from HBL saw to it that the opposition was bowled out for 245. Left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman starred with 4 for 59, and was backed up by fast bowler Sarmad Anwar (3 for 47) and Mohammad Aslam (2 for 37). The trio, with their burst of wickets, caused a collapse, as eight wickets fell for 96 runs. In reply, HBL were in a spot of bother, with opener Shan Masood retiring hurt and Saleem Elahi falling to Asad Ali; they were 10 for 1 at stumps.Water and Power Development Authority held the edge against Karachi Whites at the National Bank of Pakistan Sports Complex. In an admirable bowling effort, WAPDA bowled out Karachi for 170, thanks to three-wicket hauls from fast bowlers Shabbir Ahmed and Azharullah. It could have been worse for Karachi, for they were reeling at 101 for 8 at on stage. A 67-run stand between Akbar-ur-Rehman (58) and No.10 batsman Tabish Khan (21) saved their blushes somewhat. It was Tabish again who led the fight in the WAPDA reply, taking three wickets to put them in a spot of bother at 86 for 4. However, Jahangir Mirza (34 not out) and Ali Azmat (25 not out) stabilized the innings in an unbeaten 42-run stand to steer their team to 128 for 4 at stumps, still 42 runs adrift.Khan Research Laboratories reached a comfortable position against National Bank of Pakistan in Rawalpindi. Driven by half-centuries from Saeed Anwar jnr, Bazid Khan and Zahoor Elahi, KRL reached 319 for 7 at stumps. NBP, boosted by Wasim Khan’s three-for, had limited KRL to 115 for 4, but a 165-run stand between Bazid and Elahi turned the balance in their favour. However, KRL received a setback towards the end of the day, for they lost three wickets for 21. But with Elahi still at the crease on 76, and Jaffar Nazir (14 not out) supporting him in an unbeaten stand of 18, KRL are in with a chance of extending their advantage much further.Sui Southern Gas Corporation dominated Lahore Shalimar on the opening day at the Gaddafi Stadium. Opener Azeem Ghumman smashed an unbeaten 143, laced with 11 fours and a six, to mark a productive day for SSGC, who were boosted by four important partnerships. The lowest stand of the day was between the openers, and it yielded 59 runs. Ghumman then added 79 with Imran Abbas, followed by 65 with Bilal Asad. He signed off day one with an unbeaten partnership of 94 with captain Saeed Bin Nasir (57 not out) to take his team to 297 for 3 at stumps. Lahore face the possibility of an imposing first-innings score, and will have to strike early on the second day to give themselves a chance.Pakistan Customs walked away with first-day honours against Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited at the Marghzar Cricket Ground. Debutant Ahmed Jamal (4 for 61) and Tahir Mughal (3 for 46) shared seven wickets between them to leave ZTBL at 224 for 8 at stumps. The pair got into the act from the outset, with Mughal dismissing opener Inam-ul-Haq for a duck. Opener Zohaib Khan resisted with a 175-ball, barring a 55-run stand for the fourth wicket, there wasn’t much support from the other end. But the lower order stepped up to the task after Zohaib fell; Mohammad Khalil chipped in with 22 and Kashif Daud made a handy 18 to rally around wicketkeeper Zulqarnain Haider, who remained unbeaten on 59. From a precarious position at 116 for 6, ZTBL recovered to a more respectable position, though Pakistan Customs still hold the cards going into the second day.

Aston Villa predicted lineup v Liverpool

Aston Villa will be looking to make a statement on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool, for whom their manager Steven Gerrard made more than 700 appearances as a player.

The 41-year-old has been an instant hit at Villa Park, with the Midlands side winning three of their four league games under the Englishman. The one exception was a 2-1 defeat to reigning champions Manchester City, a game in which Villa massively impressed despite the outcome.

Judging by the lineup which started against Pep Guardiola’s side recently, Gerrard won’t make wholesale defensive changes despite facing the league’s top scorers in Liverpool with 44 goals in 15 games. However, the Villans will be boosted by the return of one of their top performers of late in Matt Targett.

Here’s what Football FanCast are predicting in terms of the starting XI as Gerrard looks to get one over on his former club.

After an impressive 2-1 win against Leicester last Sunday, there is little need for Gerrard to make wholesale changes, with the 41-year-old seemingly starting to discover his best side. The only change is in the defence, with left-back Targett returning from the head injury that ruled him out of the Foxes clash.

As for the remainder of the back five, all have been solid so far under Gerrard, conceding four goals in four games as well as Ezri Konsa (two) and Tyrone Mings (one) scoring three goals combined under the new boss.

In the midfield, John McGinn has certainly been a standout performer, with SofaScore giving the Scotsman an average rating of 7.95 under the 41-year-old. Douglas Luiz and £34k-p/w earner Marvelous Nakamba have also impressed, with the midfield trio becoming more of a given as each game passes.

In terms of the front three, with the injury to Leon Bailey, Jacob Ramsey keeps his place in the side. The 20-year-old found the net against the Foxes last week but the goal was ruled out by VAR in bizarre circumstances.

Emi Buendia set up Konsa’s first goal against Leicester and has been the first-choice left winger under the new boss, whilst Ollie Watkins has two goals in his last four games.

The Englishman will be particularly vital if Villa are to leave Merseyside with a result, as Gerrard’s side are likely to be limited to few chances. If an opportunity appears, the striker will need to be clinical at Anfield today.

Então eles compraram a ideia – explicou Eduardo.

Tendulkar, Gambhir, dead pitch frustrate Sri Lanka

Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, and a dead Ahmedabad pitch (21 wickets and seven centuries in five days) put paid to Sri Lanka’s dream of a first Test win in India

Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, and a dead Ahmedabad pitch (21 wickets and seven centuries in five days) put paid to Sri Lanka’s dream of a first Test win in India. Gambhir played out 110 deliveries for 40 runs, and Tendulkar 211 for 100 runs; both of them looked entirely at home in the role of saving a Test, not letting dot balls affect their minds.By the time the final session of the match arrived, the only question left unanswered was whether Tendulkar would get to his 88th international century. Kumar Sangakkara didn’t seem pleased with being kept on the field in the mandatory overs while Tendulkar moved towards the ton. The bowlers started bowling way outside off stump, and Tendulkar retorted in his own inimitable manner. He walked across to a delivery so wide it would have been called in an ODI, and flicked it to the square-leg boundary to get into the 90s. He had to work similarly hard for the rest of the runs too. As soon as he got there, the captains agreed to call off the match with six overs still to go.Sri Lanka started the day 144 ahead, and needed eight Indian wickets to force a result, but met a docile pitch and determined batting. The only break in concentration came in the second session when Gambhir stepped out to launch Rangana Herath out of the ground, and ended up losing his wicket. That was not before he had reached his seventh century: four of them, including his last three, have come in the second innings, two of them in match-saving scenarios. He now averages 59.55 in the second innings, against 54.22 overall.Sri Lanka were not helped by the hamstring injury to Dammika Prasad, who didn’t bowl in the first session, and Muttiah Muralitharan’s ineffectiveness: he didn’t take a wicket in 38 second-innings overs. Previously Murali had gone wicketless in the second innings of a match only six times; the most he had bowled in such scenarios was 17 overs. Their problems on the unhelpful pitch were summed up by how Amit Mishra, nightwatchman from yesterday, got to his personal best score and frustrated them for 26 deliveries on the fifth morning.Smart Stats

Gautam Gambhir’s 114 was his fourth century in the second innings; he averages 59.55 in the second innings, significantly higher than his overall average of 54.22.

Sachin Tendulkar’s 43rd Test century was 11th in the second innings; he averages 54.79 overall but it dips to 42.40 in the second innings.

A total of 1598 runs were scored in the Test, the second-highest aggregate for Tests in India.

The Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad ranks fourth in the list of Indian venues with the highest average runs per wicket. Each wicket averages 34.88 at the venue, but the list is headed by the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi with 35.88.

Muttiah Muralitharan was played cautiously but was kept at bay by each of the batsmen. Gambhir took him for 31 off 73, Amit Mishra made 2 off 22, Tendulkar scored 32 off 50 and Laxman 25 off 50.

Gambhir, at the other end, was in his Napier-like mode from earlier this year, when he batted 643 minutes for 137 runs to save the Test. Even today, he was not interested in scoring, or in other words he didn’t let being stuck at one end bother him much. Angelo Mathews bowled well in Prasad’s absence, hitting good lengths consistently, getting some of them to stay low and getting the odd one to seam away off the rare crack on the pitch. But Gambhir took most of the strike to him, playing 30 consecutive balls from Mathews for no run in the first hour, certain in his judgement outside off, and coming forward to straighter deliveries to negate the odd shooter.Against spinners, Gambhir preferred to stay back, or jump out of the track and get close enough to the delivery. He did pull out the big hits in the 90s, as he is used to doing because he prefers to get the 90s done with quickly. He took 61 deliveries to move from overnight 74 to 90, but then hit three boundaries in six balls to reach his century quickly. And then scored two runs in 25 deliveries. The approach in the 90s was similar to that in Napier, when he stepped out and lofted Daniel Vettori and Jeetan Patel for fours in consecutive overs.Post lunch, when Gambhir played his only rash shot, he left the saunter towards safety in Tendulkar’s hands. Tendulkar had started off fluently, driving Murali against the spin for two boundaries, and punching Mathews for one, and once he got comfortable in the middle he too opted to play for time. Between them Gambhir and Tendulkar played out 24 overs. The latter had reached 32 off 75 deliveries, and slowed down even more after that.Sri Lanka tried one of the last rolls of the dice, taking the new ball and getting Prasad to bowl despite the injury. But neither Prasad nor Chanaka Welegedara could find enough from the pitch to disturb Tendulkar or VVS Laxman. For a while Tendulkar shut shop completely, scoring three runs in 26 deliveries. By that time he had reached 30,000 international runs, and it seemed torturous to make the fast bowlers keep bowling on this pitch. The spinners came back on, the match started moving towards a slow draw again. By tea Tendulkar had crossed 50, India had erased the deficit, and Tendulkar and Laxman had played out another 24 overs. Post the interval, both Tendulkar and Laxman batted with more intent, in the knowledge that the game had been saved. Sri Lankan bowlers tried various angles of attack, but there was little left to play for, and both the batsmen duly reached personal milestones.

Sri Lanka 'chickened out', says DDCA vice-president

Former India Test player Chetan Chauhan has said that Sri Lanka “chickened out” out of the final ODI against India after finding themselves in trouble at 83 for 5

Cricinfo staff28-Dec-2009

Chetan Chauhan: ‘I don’t think the match would have been called off had it been in Australia or South Africa.’•AFP

The Delhi & Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) vice-president and former India Test player Chetan Chauhan has said Sri Lanka “chickened out” out of the final ODI against India after finding themselves in trouble at 83 for 5 in the 24th over. He also questioned the officials’ decision to call off the game and said the pitch was neither unplayable or dangerous.Chauhan’s comments, to the Indian news channel , are likely to add to the controversy surrounding the match, and appear ill-timed given that the matter is currently with the ICC – which could, as punishment, keep the Kotla ground out of the 2011 World Cup.He claimed while the match at the Feroz Shah Kotla was held up, with the officials pondering whether it would be wise to carry on, the ICC match referee Alan Hurst told him that the visitors were reluctant to carry on.”The match referee told me unofficially that one side did not want to carry on and he could not force them,” Chauhan said. “It could not be India since [MS] Dhoni was willing to continue. Sri Lanka were at 83 for 5 and that’s why they backed out… it was the Sri Lankans who chickened out.”Play was called off after 23.3 overs after the match officials decided the pitch was of “extremely variable bounce and too dangerous for further play”. Chauhan though, questioned why the match continued till the 24th over and wasn’t called off much earlier. “Everybody involved with the game is to be blamed for the fiasco, including the match referee,” he said. “I don’t think the match would have been called off had it been in Australia or South Africa. Had the pitch been dangerous for play, the match would have been called off inside five overs and it could not have gone on to the 24th.”I agree this was not ideal for international matches but this was neither unplayable or dangerous. I’ve played on similar tracks, even on worse. I never realised a match could be called off so easily.”Hurst, in his statement on Sunday, said the decision to abandon the match had been taken in consultation with both captains and the on-field umpires Marais Erasmus and Shavir Tarapore, after they had given it enough time to see if the pitch would settle down. “It was clear that the pitch had extremely variable bounce and was too dangerous for further play,” he said. “I’d like to commend the on-field umpires and captains for continuing as long as they did in the hope that the pitch may settle down. Unfortunately, this did not happen.”Chauhan also contended that the adjacent strip had been offered to ensure a new match. “We offered another wicket and said ‘give us one hour and you would have it ready’,” he said. “But he [Hurst] decided to call it off.”The match should have continued because some 45,000 people were in the ground and another 2-3 crore were glued to the television. An honest effort should have been made to save the match.”But Hurst said, “Before abandoning the match, consideration was given to shifting the match to a secondary pitch. However, it was deemed impractical as the secondary pitch was not adequately prepared.”

AVFC Predicted XI vs Chelsea

After a stellar start under Steven Gerrard, picking up four wins from six games, Aston Villa host a Chelsea side in mixed form in what proves to be both a tricky test, but also an opportunity to record a significant scalp.

Here is how Football FanCast believe Villa will line up against the Blues as Gerrard makes two changes to the win against Norwich City.

In goal, there are no surprises as Emi Martínez makes his 17th league start of the campaign whilst the back four of Matt Targett, Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa and Matty Cash avoids any tinkering.

There is one change in the midfield as 18-year-old Carney Chukwuemeka is handed his first Premier League start since August and just his second in total.

With Marvelous Nakamba set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines, the English midfielder has an opportunity to impress and fill the void left by the Zimbabwe international.

The £2.25m-rated midfielder has already made three appearances off of the bench under Gerrard, assisting in the Villans’ last game against Norwich.

Furthermore, having been dubbed “a big game player” by a previous coach, the game against Chelsea could prove the perfect opportunity for Chukwuemeka to state a claim.

Chukwuemeka’s presence means that Jacob Ramsey moves onto the right-wing. Having scored against Norwich last time out, the 20-year-old deserves to maintain his place in the starting lineup.

Emi Buendía keeps his spot in the team on the left flank whilst Danny Ings replaces Ollie Watkins upfront on a precautionary basis.

With Villa set to contest a hectic festive schedule, Gerrard will need to manage his squad effectively and therefore may be tempted to rest some key players, such as Watkins, with nearby fixtures in mind.
