Australia's tail did a 'bloody good' job – Martin

Chris Martin, the New Zealand fast bowler, still held out hope of a “little miracle” despite his side losing six second-innings wickets

Two costly dropped catches on the third day basically ended New Zealand’s chances of toppling Australia, but Chris Martin, the fast bowler, still held out hope of a “little miracle” despite his side losing six second-innings wickets. Opener Simon Katich was missed twice before Australia’s lead reached 230 and they went on to set the visitors an unlikely 327 for victory.”They were crucial,” Martin said of the catches. “For many touring teams that come to Australia, how you field seems to define whether you win or lose. We did put a couple down, but for the majority of the game we have fielded well.”In the first innings the catching was very sharp as Australia were dismissed for 214, but the young side was unable to stay in touch and finished the third day at 6 for 143. Ross Taylor was strong off both feet during a sensible 67 not out while Daniel Vettori will start in the morning after Grant Elliott was bowled offering no shot to the final ball.”We still think we have a chance,” Martin said. “We’ve got Roscoe [Taylor] out there playing very well and we just have to keep the faith in our captain and hope the sort of the performance the Australian tail did today, we can potentially put on ourselves. It is going to be a big ask, it is going to be a little bit of a miracle, but it’s something we will be trying hard for.”Martin captured 3 for 69 to lead the New Zealand attack but they were unable to replicate their penetrative displays earlier in the game as the pitch flattened out. “I was happy actually,” Martin said of his bowling. “Last night was one of the more memorable evenings I’ve had. We got our tired and worn bodies out there [on Saturday] and did our best, but to get that many runs with the tail was a bloody good effort.”After Australia were dismissed, Stuart Clark, who was dropped in Nagpur, returned to wicket-taking form with 3 for 23 off 12 overs. He finished with the crucial dismissal of Elliott after picking up a contentious lbw against Brendon McCullum and a sharp caught-and-bowled to dismiss Aaron Redmond.Brett Lee had started the innings by breaking through with his third ball to remove Jamie How and capture his 300th Test victim. “It was great, a sweet feeling, to know you’ve achieved that milestone,” he said. “You don’t play for those reasons, but it’s a nice pat on the back for the hard work.” Aged 32, he has readjusted his sights on 400.After being sick in India and struggling with his form, Lee was excited to be back on bouncy home surfaces and will continue his push to regain full fitness. “I want to touch the 150kph barrier, as I get strength back,” he said. “I’m still fighting as hard as I can to get the strength back that I lost in India, but now I feel a billion times better.”He said his recent experiences, with his form struggles and family troubles, were different to overcoming an injury. “I’ve been up against a brick wall the last couple of months,” he said. “Now I feel like I’m back to where I want to be bowling.”

Vieira made mistake over Jeremie Boga

Crystal Palace have just enjoyed the most exciting transfer window in their recent history, but one target who got away may give new manager Patrick Vieira some sleepless nights as the season unfolds.

What’s the story?

The Eagles have added the likes of Marc Guehi, Odsonne Edouard and Joachim Andersen to their ranks in recent weeks as they effectively overhauled their first-team squad.

However, they were also heavily linked with a €20 million (£17.1m) move for Sassuolo winger Jeremie Boga on Deadline Day before Vieira decided against the deal following Edouard’s arrival, according to Football.London.

“Football.London understands that deal is now unlikely with Palace’s spending complete after signing Edouard…Patrick Vieira seems to think his side have enough forward players to compete and score goals this season,” the report read.

Crystal Palace fans may be concerned

Boga has cultivated a career full of promise and potential since leaving Chelsea for Sassuolo back in 2018. The former Rennes, Granada and Birmingham City loanee made a solid contribution during his maiden campaign in Serie A  before backing it up with 11 goals and four assists in his second.

The tricky forward’s productivity dropped slightly throughout 2020/21, though, after he bagged four goals and provided two assists in 27 Serie A appearances, but his overall game was more impressive than the numbers suggest.

Boga completed 3.2 dribbles per game last season, far more than any of his Sassuolo teammates achieved and also successfully dribbled past 91 opponents, the third-highest number in the Italian top division.

With Palace set to be without their most prolific dribbler Eberechi Eze until the new year through injury, and with their fourth-most fruitful dribbler Andros Townsend joining Everton, the arrival of Boga would certainly have eased the blow of their absence.

Although Palace found the back of the net twice to salvage a 2-2 draw against West Ham United last time out, Conor Gallagher’s goals were the first strikes of Vieira’s four-match reign.

Therefore, despite Edouard’s arrival, the decision to turn down the opportunity to sign a proven goalscorer and creator such as Boga is a choice that Vieira may come to regret in the weeks and months ahead.

The lack of replacement for Townsend has left the south London outfit without a natural right-winger in the first-team squad, something which could prove to be problematic for the Eagles this season, possibly leaving the club’s supporters with some serious concerns.

UK culture secretary critical of 20/20 for 20

Andy Burnham, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, has added his voice to those critical of the England board over the Stanford 20/20 for 20

Andy Burnham, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, has added his voice to those critical of the England board over the Stanford 20/20 for 20.Speaking at the FT Sport Industry Summit in London, Burham said the ECB had misjudged the mood of the public. “The event made me feel slightly uneasy and I felt the occasion was something of a hollow one,” he said. “We all understand the relationship between sport and business but if you get these two things out of their proper equilibrium, then it can turn people off at home.”I just think cricket fans want to watch games where national pride is at stake, not where money is at stake.”I just think sport has an integrity when it is sporting objectives first and national pride first. When those things are seemingly playing second fiddle to money, I don’t think that’s what makes sport sellable and gives it its appeal. It starts to detract from those things and that worries me.”ECB chief executive David Collier had earlier defended the board’s decision. “We would have had huge regrets if we had turned it down,” he said. “Here is an opportunity to protect and bolster Test cricket at a time when we are going through a global recession and when we have heard government funding has been hit.”But ECB chairman Giles Clarke, whose role in the affair has been slammed, got some much-needed support from Nigel Hilliard, the Essex chairman. “The Stanford week may sound like a failure if you are sitting in London reading about it, but it has made the ECB some useful money and got the whole of the West Indies talking about cricket again,” he told the Daily Telegraph.”We knew Clarke was always going to be a rocky ride, but he was the right man and he has done a good job. We couldn’t go round kowtowing to the Indians all year. I can only think of four people who would vote against him if the chairmanship election was held today.”

Spurs facing double blow ahead of PL return

Nuno Santo could be without two members of his first-team squad after the international break, according to reports…

What’s the latest?

The Daily Mail claim that Argentina duo Giovani Lo Celso and Cristian Romero are facing over three weeks out of action after it emerged that they were under investigation for breaching Brazil’s quarantine rules.

It’s thought that the Spurs pair are facing 14 days of quarantine in Brazil following their World Cup qualifying clash before another ten days upon their return to the United Kingdom.

They have been accused of failing to declare on official documents that they had travelled from the UK when they arrived in Sao Paolo on Friday.

This would, in turn, rule them out of at least three Premier League matches, one Carabao Cup clash and one UEFA Europa Conference League group game, too.

Hammer blow

After the start Spurs have had to the new season, this latest development should leave Nuno absolutely furious as he’ll be without two key squad members for some very crucial encounters.

These fixtures include games against arch-rivals Arsenal and Chelsea, and a trip to Rennes, where they will undoubtedly want to start well to try and win that inaugural competition.

Neither player has featured for many minutes so far this season but given the congested calendar in September, they would have been handed plenty of opportunities to get game time.

The Portuguese head coach was even against the duo travelling abroad during this international break, so for them to get caught up in a saga will only leave him more angry.

“Yes, it’s a big problem, not only for our players, it’s a problem for all the South American players playing in the Premier League because they have to obey the government laws,” he revealed to reporters, via talkSPORT. “But we must be aware that saying no to our national team is very difficult. It’s very difficult, so we’ll see how things go.”

He later added: “It [is] clear – as a club we don’t approve of the situation. What we want is a solution for everybody because this will be a big problem.”

Nuno may well struggle to keep up Spurs’ 100% in the top-flight and continue their fine form into other competitions without having the full depth of his squad available to him.

This will surely come as a hammer blow heading into Saturday’s clash with Crystal Palace.

Everton have future star in Charlie Whitaker

Rafa Benitez has overseen an impressive start to the season as the new manager of Everton.

There were significant worries over the Spaniard’s credentials when he first entered Goodison Park but those fears have been quashed with aplomb.

Everton have gathered seven points from their opening three matches but there is one controversy that continues to rage on.

That surrounds one of Benitez’s former players; James Rodriguez.

The 61-year-old took charge of Rodriguez during his spell at Real Madrid but it doesn’t seem as though their relationship has blossomed.

He wants to leave Merseyside behind and came so close to departing for good this summer. However, after failing to seal a switch away, he’s now back in training for the Toffees as they prepare to face Burnley.

James has immense quality in his locker, something that ten Premier League goal involvements last term testifies.

Yet, does he really deserve to play for Everton again? Arguably not. Benitez will presumably give him a second chance at Goodison but if he continues to strop, there are young players waiting in the wings.

One of them is Charlie Whitaker. The attacking midfielder joined Everton at the age of 12 and has risen through the academy ranks with some stellar contributions.

He scored six times for the U18 side but since making an early transition to the U23s, has been catching the eye even more.

Whitaker has scored eight goals in nine outings at the highest academy bracket, three of which have come in four Premier League 2 outings this term.

A central midfielder by trade, David Unsworth has found a new position for him as a second striker, picking up small pockets of space in the hole and carving out goal scoring opportunities.

Speaking about the 17-year-old back in May, Unsworth commented: “We have tried to get someone up there with him and he has been sensational. He is a great trainer, great to work with and a great lad. He does the hardest thing in the game, which is score goals, and he makes it look really easy.

The boss continued: “For the size of him, he is good in the air, he is brave, we just need him to link play and the future is bright for him. I’m not getting over-excited, because you can’t, it is too early. But the signs are very, very good.”

Versatile, dynamic and exciting, Whitaker isn’t the first attacking midfielder to come through the production line.

You only need to think of Kieran Dowell, a similarly tricky player who failed to make the grade at Everton and is now plying his trade for Norwich after several loan spells away.

However, if James does depart, then an opportunity to thrive in the first-team set-up has to come Whitaker’s way.

His ability to transition with such perfection through the age groups at youth level, coupled with his ability to score goals, makes him an appealing option for Benitez.

AND in other news, Rafa must ruthlessly axe “sloppy” £69k-p/w Everton liability, he’s “regressed awfully”…

Edwards looks for 100 wickets

Fidel Edwards, the West Indies fast bowler, is eager to reach the 100-wicket landmark during the first Test against New Zealand starting in Dunedin on Thursday

Fidel Edwards, the West Indies fast bowler, is eager to reach the 100-wicket landmark during the first Test against New Zealand starting in Dunedin on Thursday. Edwards has had to wait since June to get another chance at taking the five wickets he needs to reach the milestone.”It is something I have been thinking about and this Test match is a chance to get there,” Edwards said. “We have not played Test cricket since June [against Australia], so I have had to wait.”I’m a fast bowler, so I’m here bowl fast and make the batsmen uncomfortable. But I’m here to get wickets as well. My rhythm has been very good and the aim is to get wickets and make a contribution to the team. I have been trying to stay fit and stay focused on my job.”Edwards last toured New Zealand in 2006 and picked up seven wickets in two Tests including 5 for 65 in the first innings in Wellington. He said since then he had developed the ability to bowl consistently. “I had a few injuries along the way, but I’m feeling stronger. I will be looking for big performances.” Since then Edwards has taken 35 wickets at 35.65 from 11 Tests.Edwards said he would bank on swing to pick up wickets in New Zealand. “I watched the New Zealand team when they played against Australia, and I saw the Aussies getting the ball to swing and the results followed. If the conditions stay this way the ball should do quite a bit. We are here to win the series, we know the Kiwis can be a tough team, but we believe we can win.”John Dyson, the West Indies coach, said his team would use New Zealand’s recent 2-0 loss to Australia to its advantage. “You just have to look at the number of allrounders they [New Zealand] have picked to bolster their batting and that tells you that they are a bit worried about their batting,” Dyson said. He was happy with West Indies’ preparation for what he felt would be a ‘hard series’.”We expect our leading players to do their jobs, they are well known for that. What we are also looking for is for some of the lesser known players to put their hands up and say ‘count me in too’.”
