Michael Clarke, the Australian vice-captain, has warned a split between the game’s administrators in Asian and Western nations might have disastrous consequences.”It’s a concern for us, a concern for cricket and we can’t afford that [split],” he told a Sydney-based radio station 2KY. “Cricket in general can’t afford it. I think it will be the end of cricket if that ever happens and I really hope that isn’t the case.”There have been tensions between members of the ICC over the conduct of the Champions Trophy in Pakistan, with Australia, England and New Zealand having doubts over the security situation in the country. Players from these countries as well as South Africa have expressed concerns about the visit. Another conflict is the one between the BCCI and the ECB over the Twenty20 Champions League, with both boards now slated to conduct their own version of the tournament in October.A recent move initiated by the ECB and Cricket South Africa to revoke Zimbabwe’s status as a Full Member at the ICC annual meet also ended in a stalemate, with the Asian countries supporting Zimbabwe’s membership.Steve Waugh, the former Australian captain, said boards needed to strengthen relations and avoid a fallout. “I think they have to work at that relationship because there’s definitely the potential there for something like that [a split] to happen,” Waugh said. “The Champions Trophy is coming to a head and certain teams not wanting to go will cause some issues in itself.”Whether some teams go or they don’t, the differences of opinion might have wider repercussions.”Peter Young, Cricket Australia’s general manager of public affairs, denied the chances of any split in world cricket. “We’re certainly not thinking about any split and our relationship with the subcontinent is important.”At the moment there are a number of issues facing world cricket. There are the Twenty20 concepts in England and India, and the issues dealing with Pakistan and the Champions Trophy are frighteningly difficult.”It’s important for world cricket that Pakistan cricket is strong, and the only way they can stay strong is if the likes of Australia visit there regularly,” he said. “Pakistan have said they want us there, we’ve made it clear we want to come, but it has to be safe.”Young said Australia is likely to make its decision on visiting Pakistan around August 10.

Chingoka slapped with EU sanctions

The European Union has widened sanctions against Zimbabwe, publishing a list of 37 more individuals and four businesses subject to visa bans and asset freezes … and the list includes Peter Chingoka

Cricinfo staff23-Jul-2008The European Union has widened sanctions against Zimbabwe, publishing a list of 37 more individuals and four businesses subject to visa bans and asset freezes. One of those included on the list for the first time is Peter Chingoka, the chairman of Zimbabwe Cricket. The additions take the total number of targeted individuals to 168.The EU release included Chingoka with the following short explanation. “Chief of the federation of cricket of Zimbabwe, having publicly supported the terror campaign carried out before and during the elections”.An important aspect of the action is that Switzerland and other European Free Trade Association countries also support it, so Chingoka will not be able to transit through any EFTA or EU countries.Chingoka has steadfastly denied that he has any links to the ruling regime of Robert Mugabe, and a decision last October to deny him a visa to enter the UK was shrouded in confusion. While government sources told Cricinfo that the visa had been refused because of evidence of links to the Zanu-PF government, the ICC apparently never asked Chingoka himself why he had been barred. A consequence was that the ICC annual conference earlier this month was moved away from London for the first time in 99 years as it was felt that Chingoka would be denied entry, even though he never actually reapplied for his visa. However, his inclusion on an EU list will weaken his standing, and will also undermine claims by his supporters within the ICC that the original ban was an unwarranted unilateral action by the British government. It is possible that the US authorities will extend their own list of individuals subject to sanctions in the coming weeks.”The sanctions … are designed very much to reinforce the drive for the transitional government that reflects the democratic will of the Zimbabwe people as expressed in the election in March,” David Miliband, the British foreign secretary, said.

Pundit says Man City must pay Tottenham £160m for Harry Kane

Graham Roberts has told Manchester City to pay £160m or they simply won’t sign Harry Kane this summer.

The Premier League champions have made just one bid for the England captain of around £100m, which was rejected by Daniel Levy, who values him in excess of £150m.

Tottenham want to keep their star striker despite his off the field actions having missed training in a bid to push a move to City.

Kane later came out and denied missing his return to Hotspur Way but was then left out of Spurs’ opening day victory over Pep Guardiola’s men, although his lack of a pre-season could have been the reason for his exclusion – with the 28-year-old only joining the rest of his teammates on Friday.

Reports from The Times believe that City are set to return with an improved offer, although it’s still less than Tottenham’s asking-price, which means it’ll most likely be rejected by Levy.

Several Manchester City plays have seen their names thrown into the ring as part of a possible deal to bring Kane to the Etihad Stadium.

But Roberts exclusively told Football FanCast that City simply must pay the money or look elsewhere:

“All they have to do is pay £160m, that’s it. There’s no good throwing in Sterling, Silva, Laporte, those players are on mega wages. Sterling hasn’t signed a new contract because he wants £400,000 per-week.

“Pay us what Harry Kane is worth, Pep Guardiola should stop talking about players who aren’t his. If he wants him, come up with the money, and I’m sure the club will sell him to you.

“But are you going to pay what he’s worth? He’s worth £160m, pay it.”

Liverpool: Woodburn exit ‘almost done’

Hearts manager Robbie Neilson says a loan move for Liverpool’s Ben Woodburn is ‘almost done’ as the Reds prepare to take on Burnley at Anfield on Saturday.

The lowdown

Woodburn wrote himself into the Liverpool history books on just his second senior appearance. His goal in the 2-0 League Cup win against Leeds United at Anfield in November 2016 made him the club’s youngest-ever scorer, eclipsing Michael Owen’s record (via BBC Sport).

He’s made nine further appearances for the Reds’ first team and also earned ten Wales caps, though he did miss out on their squad for the European Championships (via Transfermarkt).

Woodburn, who will turn 22 in October, is now set for his fourth loan spell away from Anfield after previous stints at Sheffield United, Oxford United and Blackpool. He’s now into the final 12 months of his contract, and it’s unclear if he’ll remain on Liverpool’s books beyond next summer.

Club legend and former youth team coach Steven Gerrard has showered praise on Woodburn in the past, labelling him an ‘excellent’ player with a ’10 out of 10′ attitude.

The latest

Speaking ahead of Hearts’ Scottish Premiership clash with Aberdeen on Sunday, Neilson revealed the transfer is on the verge of completion and expressed his excitement.

“We are still negotiating with Liverpool,” he said. “We are almost done with it, it’s just a case of trying to get things finalised.

“He is still a Liverpool player at the moment and he is one we are really interested in taking here.”

The verdict

Woodburn will hope to build on an impressive pre-season when he heads to the Scottish capital. Above all, he looked physically stronger than ever before, ready to truly thrive in the men’s game.

It seems unlikely that he’ll forge a career at Liverpool, having been leapfrogged by fellow youngsters like Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott, but there should be plenty of opportunities available elsewhere.

With the World Cup coming round pretty soon after the Euros – it’s pencilled in for the end of next year – Woodburn’s focus in the short to medium term should be on forcing his way back into Wales contention.

In other news, this Liverpool squad player has been tipped to make a ‘very difficult’ decision.

An embodiment of county cricket

A tribute to Graeme Hick, who has announced his retirement in his 25th year in county cricket

Andrew Miller03-Sep-2008

Graeme Hick leaves the field to a standing ovation•PA Photos

“One day I’ll just get out of bed and come down to the ground and think ‘I’ve had enough’. Whether that comes in July, August, September or while in a gym in October, who knows, but I’ve always hoped that’s the way it will happen.” That was Graeme Hick on the eve of his 40th birthday, two years and three seasons ago, and his prophecy has proven to be spot-on. Aside from a niggling elbow injury that has hindered his participation this summer, there was no obvious sign that the end – finally – was nigh. Had Hick taken guard for one more season in 2009, no-one would have been the slightest bit taken aback, except perhaps the county bowlers who must now be breathing a wistful sigh of relief that their 25-year sentence has been lifted. There is still the best part of a month of the 2008 season remaining, and with Worcestershire sitting at the top of the second division of the Championship, Hick has the chance to sign off with a measure of the glory that his lengthy service deserves. But win or lose, he will soon be gone, and while those whose judgment derives solely from feats achieved at the highest echelons will size up his Test record and shrug, countless others will rightly mourn the passing of one of the gentle giants of the game.More than any other cricketer, Graeme Hick has come to embody – for better and for worse – the fading magnificence of county cricket, a version of the game that has existed since the early 1800s but whose relevance in this 100mph world of Twenty20 cricket seems to face new questions on a daily basis. But those that live fast, die young, and leave little for the memories. Hick chose instead to slow down and endure – like a stately galleon, he proved ill-equipped for the iron-clad warfare of modern Test cricket, but his billowing sails patrolled the calmer waters of the shires for a full quarter of a century.Does it matter that he was found wanting at the very highest level? Of course it does, and doubtless retirement will afford him plenty of time to dwell on the moments that might have made a difference. If only he could have adopted a less cluttered mindset when facing Curtly Ambrose during that traumatic debut series in 1991. If only he could have read the match situation better at Sydney in 1994-95, and hustled to his hundred instead of compelling Mike Atherton to leave him high and dry on 98 not out.If only the security of the central contract system had arrived ten years earlier, and bonded him to a team ethic that was palpably lacking for much of his piecemeal international career. Whatever the reasons for his shortcomings, the limelight never suited him. Instead the definitive period of Hick’s career was not his turbulent decade in and out of the England team, but the 15 languidly brilliant years at New Road that bookended his time at the top. His six Test hundreds are mementoes he’ll doubtless treasure, but for his county he scored no fewer than 106 – out of a grand total of 136 that places him eighth on the all-time list of first-class century-makers.That list, however, is already a living anachronism. Mark Ramprakash, whose career mirrors Hick’s in so many ways (and whose England debut came in the same Headingley Test in 1991) became the 25th man to reach 100 hundreds earlier this season, but the chances of anyone ever emulating that feat are as good as non-existent. From WG Grace through Frank Woolley to Geoff Boycott and Graham Gooch, there once was a common narrative to the game of cricket. All that is changing at a frightening pace, and the notions of love and loyalty that sustained Hick throughout his Worcestershire career are fast being replaced by the quest for a quick buck. And perhaps, tragically, that fate has also been forced upon Hick himself, because as he conceded in a tearful farewell to the media, the prospect of him signing for the rebel Indian Cricket League has not been entirely ruled out. At the age of 42, but with the fitness of a man half his age, who could begrudge him the chance to secure a nest egg for retirement, especially in a form of the game for which his bold strokes might have been invented? But in the light of the woes that befell Kent this season, there’s no alternative but for a complete severing of Hick’s cricketing umbilical cord. But those that live fast, die young, and leave little for the memories. Hick chose instead to slow down and endure – like a stately galleon, he proved ill-equipped for the iron-clad warfare of modern Test cricket, but his billowing sails patrolled the calmer waters of the shires for a full quarter of a century. That means tearing himself away from Worcestershire, the one team to which Hick truly belonged during his days as a professional in his adopted country. With its bucolic river-frontage and cathedral backdrop, it’s not hard to understand why Hick, the modest son of a Rhodesian tobacco farmer, felt at peace in such surroundings, and he repaid them with the finest days of his life. The bright lights were never his scene – except, perversely, for the occasions in which he batted under them in one-day internationals for England, when instinct was able to surplant circumstance, and the full array of his talent was given a chance to breathe.Hick never had such problems being his own man on the county circuit. When he arrived at Worcestershire as a callow 18-year-old in 1984, he stunned the old stagers with the uncomplicated certainty of his strokeplay – that season he made 84 unbeaten runs on debut against Surrey, and in 1986, became the youngest player ever to pass 2000 runs. England recognition followed the moment he completed his qualification period in 1991, and though we’ll never truly know why he couldn’t reproduce his county form for his country, that inevitability of selection, coupled with the anxiety of waiting, surely helped to turn him into a marked man.The scars of his England experience have long since healed, and the Hick who heads for retirement is a man who knows he gave his all for the sport – and the club – that he loved. Quite what he leaves behind him, however, is another matter entirely. Perhaps his very longevity has perpetuated the era that he helped to define, but without his totemic presence in the first-class averages, there’s suddenly a void that may never be adequately filled.
