To be honest, I wanted to play in the Championship match for my own peace of mind as much as anything. I needed to be 100 per cent sure that I could get through a four-day game rather than just a one-day game as I had slight reservations about my ability to do so.””It’s an absolute nonsense to suggest that my knee injury has been misdiagnosed or that I was rushed into the ‘Roses match’ ahead of schedule. I’ve had great support from the medical team since I was injured and it’s just frustrating that I haven’t yet been able to get back to full fitness.”Once the two weeks rest period is up, I’m looking forward to getting back into the nets and hopefully playing cricket for Yorkshire. It will then be up to me to prove to Nasser and Duncan that my body is ready for a five-day Test Match. That’s my target for this summer, and everyone who knows me knows that I’ve never been one to shirk a challenge.”

Newcastle United have suffered a potentially significant blow in their pursuit of Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer.

What’s the story?

According to The Athletic, the Hoops have shocked potential suitors of the 23-year-old by suddenly increasing their asking price to £20 million, forcing talks to collapse with interested parties.

With Ajer having less than a year to run on his contract at Celtic Park, many sides are unlikely to see the new figure as value for money, making any deal extremely difficult to justify at that price.

During his five-year stint with the Glasgow giants, Ajer has often caught the eye with his impressive performances, winning eight major trophies with the Hoops.

His standout displays have earned several plaudits, including from former Scotland boss Alex McLeish, who praised the 6 ft 4 beast during the recently concluded campaign.

“I go back to that St Johnstone game, you see sometimes when it’s not going for Celtic, and the game’s in its dying embers, and then all of a sudden you see Ajer striding up the pitch trying to inspire like Roy of the Rovers, ” said McLeish.

“Running from defence, augment the attack and then it leads to a goal – these are inspirational moments, and he is an inspirational, influential player for Celtic. Like Virgil van Dijk, he came to Celtic, and we all know what happened next.”

It, therefore, came as little surprise when the Norway international was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League with Newcastle in recent weeks, with Steve Bruce keen to build on some impressive end-of-season form.

However, the Magpies boss will be gutted at the shock increase in Ajer’s valuation, potentially pricing the St. James’ Park outfit out of a deal.

With the impact of the ongoing pandemic continuing to negatively affect football club’s finances, and Newcastle owner Mike Ashley not exactly known for his free-spending nature, Bruce is expected to be working on a tight budget this summer.

As a result, any move for Ajer may have to be put on hold as a consequence of this latest revelation, handing Newcastle a setback in their plans for the current window.

An update has emerged on Everton forward Richarlison, regarding Real Madrid’s interest in his services.

What’s the talk?

According to the Echo, there is a belief at Everton that Real Madrid are preparing an offer for Brazilian forward Richarlison this summer. Carlo Ancelotti is a big admirer of the man he managed at Goodison Park and could launch a bid to bring him to Madrid.

The report claims that the La Liga side value him at £90m, but it remains to be seen whether or not they are willing to make an offer in that region.

Fans would be livid

Marcel Brands must avoid a nightmare scenario by keeping Richarlison at the club this summer. The attacker is a key player for the Toffees and losing him, having already lost Ancelotti to Real, would be a bitter blow that would leave fans livid heading into next season.

Supporters would be furious if Richarlison departed from the club to go and join Madrid, unless a ridiculous transfer offer came in for his services. It would need to be a mega fee, possibly the £90m touted, for fans to understand Brands cashing in. Therefore, anything less than that would be a disaster for the Toffees chief and should be avoided at all costs.

Earlier this year, whilst he was still in charge at Goodison, Ancelotti lavished praise on the Brazil international.

He told GOAL:

“Richarlison is a modern striker, a complete striker, because he works really hard. His physical statistics are really high, like a midfielder – but he has speed and he is really clinical in the box.

“He is fantastic with the head and clinical in front of the goalkeeper and his movement without the ball is really good.

“I think he can be one of the top strikers in Europe. I’m sure he can because he has all these kind of qualities and he doesn’t have a specific position on the pitch. He is really complete.”

This shows how highly the Madrid coach rates the £90k-per-week gem and illustrates why he now wants to bring him to Spain. Richarlison managed seven goals and three assists in the Premier League last term for Everton, having provided 13 goals and three assists in the previous campaign.

His first appearance at the Olympic Games also showed the confidence running through his veins as he scored a hat-trick in the opening 30 minutes of a 4-2 win over Germany.

This proves that he can perform at the top level and be a threat in the final third, which is valuable for what the club want to do next season. Therefore, fans will want him to be kept hold of and that means Brands needs to reject any offers from Real, unless they reach truly dizzy heights.

Sheffield Wednesday have been handed a boost in their bid to bring Bailey Peacock-Farrell to Hillsborough this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Birmingham Live, who claimed that, with Birmingham City having secured the loan signing of Wolves goalkeeper Matija Sarkic, the Blues are now no longer pursuing a deal for the Burnley shot-stopper.

A further report by Yorkshire Live claimed that this puts the Owls in a much more favourable position to land the 24-year-old this summer, although Championship side Bournemouth have also been credited with an interest in the Northern Ireland international.

Great news for Wednesday

While Peacock-Farrell’s game-time has been limited so far in his Burnley career, with the ‘keeper having played second fiddle to the likes of Nick Pope and Joe Hart at Turf Moor, there is still plenty to suggest that the 24-year-old would be a fantastic signing for Wednesday this summer.

Indeed, in the season prior to his Burnley move, he made 28 Championship appearances for Leeds, over which the £900k-rated man kept 10 clean sheets, as well as averaging 2.1 saves and conceding just 1.1 goals per game.

These returns saw the man Noel Whelan dubbed a “fantastic” player earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.76, with his eye-catching performances leading to Sean Dyche splashing out £2.5m in order to purchase the youngster.

Furthermore, with Keiren Westwood having left Hillsborough at the end of last season, and the 36-year-old having been the club’s number one for the last seven years, there is very much a spot to be filled between the sticks at Wednesday.

As such, should the Owls go on to secure a deal for the £18k-per-week man this summer, and he subsequently manages to replicate his form while playing in the second tier with Leeds, it would certainly appear as if Darren Moore will have pulled off a huge coup for the club.

With Birmingham now out of the picture for Peacock-Farrell, it looks as if Wednesday’s chances of landing the 24-year-old have significantly increased, something which should come as great news for the club’s supporters.
