Together in academics – together in sports
Nike Cricket Nursery (NCN) is a non-profit, community project for 7-9 year olds. The idea is to develop basic cricket skills in a healthy, fun-filled environment. This encourages them to learn tolerance and teamwork as children who play together. The initiative for Nike Cricket Nursery (NCN) was well conceived by renowned Pakistani cricket commentator and critic, Omar Kureishi who has always been a guiding light for the promotion of cricket at grass root level here. Lt Gen Tauqir Zia, Chairman – Pakistan Cricket Board, immediately approved Nike Cricket Nursery on behalf of the PCB. Nike runs the program in association with Pakistan Cricket Board.

“Nike Cricket has been conceived as a community project and the accent is on participation. I hope the children will achieve excellence but that will be a bonus. It will be sufficient if they begin to learn the fundamentals of a game that has so much to teach not only on the field but off it as well.” These are the views of Omar Kureishi, the man who visualized the community project and launched it last November.

Omar Kureishi adds, “It’s my good luck that we were able to get a sponsor like Nike. When I approached Ghous Akbar (MD Nike) for sponsorship, he agreed without any hesitation. Neither he nor I can take any credit. The credit belongs to the children themselves. They have taken to Nike Cricket enthusiastically and are having a lot of fun.”True to Omar’s words, the children have responded overwhelmingly.

On February 10, 2002, the PCB Chairman witnessed the children from 7-11 years being taught the basic skills of the game at National Stadium Karachi and immediately approved of it promising to help take Nike Cricket nationwide. He said that PCB has hired coaches including former Test and First Class cricketers to provide their assistance and coaching for the Nursery’s future programs. An interesting point is that Nike is holding the cricket nursery at NSK for the past three months and coaching more than 200 children aged 7-9 free of charge.

PCB Chairman lauded this decision to promote cricket at grass root level and assured them of all possible cooperation for organizing more of such camps. He said that PCB intends to promote the sport at grass root level, open to all without any discrimination as is evident from this camp where children from public sector schools, special schools and SOS Villages are participating. He appreciated the fact this idea of coaching was conceived by Omar Kureishi and PCB always pays high regard to his good guidance and suggestions. Tauqir Zia also lauded the services of MD Nike, for promotion of cricket.

Omar Kureishi also addressed the ceremony, which was attended by participating children, their parents, teachers and a large number of cricket enthusiasts. The Nike Cricket Nursery simplifies the game of cricket. Rules are modified according to conditions. Played on a grassy ground (National Stadium Karachi) with specially designed equipment made from high quality moulded plastic, light enough for small hands. The equipment is light, tough, hardwearing and safe, so there is no need for any protective wear.Presently there are about 200 children enrolled and the highlight is children from low income groups are trained free of charge and also provided free transport.

Parents and teachers provide a lot of support and being cricket enthusiasts themselves often join the children on the ground for a few overs. Children play five days a week at the Stadium. The program is not just meant to coach but train them into developing basic cricket skills and to have fun while doing it.

Forget Nuno: Spurs need to hire Mancini

Tottenham Hotspur appear to be edging closer to finally ending their managerial search but it’s not too late for them to appoint one particular candidate…

What’s the word?

According to The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath, former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo has held talks with the north London outfit over the vacant manager’s role. However, it is also claimed that the club admire three other managers, in which current Italy coach Roberto Mancini features.

The 56-year-old, who has won 13 major trophies throughout his coaching career, has been out of the domestic game since 2018 when he took the national team job. His Italy side currently remain unbeaten at Euro 2020, so it remains to be seen how soon he could come into contention.

Forget Nuno

It does seem like Spurs are closing in on Nuno, who left their Premier League rivals by mutual consent at the end of last season following a dismal 13th-place finish.

To be fair, the 47-year-old did have to deal with several blows, such as losing Diogo Jota to Liverpool and the cruel injury suffered by Raul Jimenez. Truth be told, it’s no wonder they struggled to score as few as 36 goals.

However, if Mancini is being considered by the Spurs hierarchy, then he should absolutely be considered instead. New sporting director Fabio Paratici should know all about him and his managerial ability.

He has won three Serie A titles and numerous league cups, whilst his previous time in England is also hugely encouraging, having secured Manchester City their first Premier League title in 2011/12.

What makes the Italian such an interesting candidate is his recent transformation of the national team. Italy are the only team at Euro 2020 to have won all their group games without conceding a goal. They boast the best goal difference and have recorded the most shots and through-balls at the tournament, as per Sky Sports.

It’s now 30 wins in all competitions for a team which failed to even qualify for the World Cup in 2018, while Mancini has guided them to the knockout stages of a major tournament for just the third time in 13 years, too.

This change in fortunes is something Spurs can only dream of after recording their lowest top-flight finish in over a decade. If there’s anyone that can reinvigorate a sleeping giant, then it is Mancini who seems well-equipped.

In the past, the Italian has been lauded as an “excellent coach”, whilst he once dubbed himself “the best manager in England” back in 2013.

Paratici and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy must look to Mancini before it’s too late.

BOWLING STYLE: Wicket-keeper
OCCUPATION: CFX Academy studentFIRST-CLASS DEBUT: 10-12 March 2000, Matabeleland v Manicaland, at HarareSports Club
TEST DEBUT: Still awaited
ODI DEBUT: Still awaitedBIOGRAPHY (updated April 2002)Wisdom Siziba, one of the products of the township development scheme in Zimbabwe, shares in a rare record in first-class cricket. He is only the tenth player in the entire history of the first-class game to carry his bat, as an opening batsman, through a complete innings on his debut. This he achieved in Matabeleland’s first Logan Cup match of the 1999/2000 season, played against Manicaland on neutral ground at Alexandra Sports Club in Harare. He batted for exactly four hours to score 40 not out of a team total of 150, but his effort was not enough to save the match. He showed great determination and powers of concentration, and a good defence, but few attacking strokes. Later in the season, against the CFX Academy at Country Club, he recorded his first fifty, an innings that took him 230 minutes and 196 balls.Wisdom owes his interest in cricket to his grade five teacher at Mtshingwe Primary School in the western townships of Bulawayo, Nicholas Sisingo, who invited him to come along in the afternoons and learn how to play. Nicholas has guided him throughout his career, at high school and at club and Matabeleland practices, sometimes helping him with transport as well, as it is difficult for Wisdom to travel the long distances from the high-density suburb in Bulawayo where he lives to the club grounds.Wisdom’s highest score at primary school was 87 against Helemu School, and he did well enough to attend the Matabeleland primary schools trials. He was selected for the provincial team to play in the national primary schools cricket week. He progressed to Emakhandeni High School, but there was no cricket there, so he had to be content with playing in the provincial development team. After leaving school Wisdom did not take up regular employment, preferring to live on a presumably meagre income doing part-time coaching for the Zimbabwe Cricket Union. His normal daily programme was to train in the mornings and coach at schools in the western townships of Bulawayo during the afternoon, and attending club and Matabeleland practices. He attended trials for the national Under-19 team in 1999, but did not win selection.Derrick Townshend, the Matabeleland manager, paid tribute to Wisdom’s dedication, describing how he often had to catch several buses to travel the 15 or so kilometres required, an attribute sadly lacking in many more affluent Matabeleland players. He played for the Bulawayo Sports Club, but most of their matches were in the lower leagues. However, he was noticed and chosen for a Matabeleland development side, and his 149 against the McDonald Club second team doubtless helped to propel him into the Matabeleland side. He only learned of his selection for the match in Harare through his friend Clement Mahachi, then a student at the CFX Academy. He did not even have a good bat to play with, and before the match the Matabeleland Cricket Association bought him a new one.Wisdom scored just three runs in the first innings and felt he had allowed himself to be distracted by the talking in the field. He determined that he would not make the same mistake second time round, when Matabeleland went in again 59 runs ahead. "I took my patience, my concentration and said I am not going to get out," he says. "That’s what Mr Townshend told me; he said, `I want you to bat through to lunch,’ and that’s what I did, I batted through to lunch. When he came at lunch he said, `I want you to bat to tea,’ and I did, through my concentration and patience."Wisdom pays tribute to the help he has received from Heath Streak and Bill Flower, father of Andy and Grant, in his batting. Heath bowled very fast at him, but he told Wisdom not to hide, but to be patient, play the short balls down and when the bowler pitches up to place the ball in the gap. Bill encouraged him to look for singles, to work the ball around the field and keep the score moving, although he did not find that easy in Logan Cup cricket.Wisdom was selected for the national Under-23 development team to tour Kenya in August 2000, but ws prevented from going due to illness. However he was a natural selection for the CFX Academy in 2000/01, Nicholas Sisingo again encouraging him to apply, and he began with a sound forty against Mashonaland at Harare Sports Club. The development of his game was obvious, as he showed much greater ability to work the ball around and keep the score moving, even on a pitch and outfield that made scoring difficult. "I was working very hard during the off-season," he said. "I was trying hard to score off each and every ball, and when the season started I started scoring runs."Former Academy players Mecury Kenny and Sanyo Nyakutse gave him a great deal of help and advice, and helped him develop his pull and cut in particular. But Wisdom soon realized that these were not profitable strokes under the prevailing conditions, and concentrated instead on picking up ones and twos by careful placement of the ball. "Eddo [Brandes] was swinging the ball a lot and bowling very straight. I said to myself, I am just going to stay here, I am going to play my shots. If he bowls short I will pull him, but I will keep my shot selection to what I am good at doing."The Academy had begun their year with a retreat in the Chimanimani Mountains, on Zimbabwe’s eastern border, and Wisdom told of what he learned there. "We were told that when you walk out to bat, you have to be focused, you have to concentrate. We watched a tape of Vivian Richards, and I told the guys I want to be like him. I played against Zimbabwe A and scored 24, and it was a tough game, with the bowlers moving the ball."Wisdom has not yet scored many runs in one-day cricket, admitting that he is too slow. "It seems that I’m a Test player, but it’s coming now," he says. Wisdom’s hallmarks are dedication and commitment, and it will be interesting to see how far they will get him in the game.Wisdom remembers his year at the Academy with affection, talking about all the hard work and good advice he received, in wicket-keeping as well as batting, although his keeping is still far from polished. He returned to Matabeleland for the remaining two years of his contract, where the selectors preferred him as an opening batsman without having to don the gauntlets as well.In the second Logan Cup match of the season, he became only the second black Zimbabwean after Hamilton Masakadza to score a first-class century, 103 out of 192 in four hours against Midlands. He almost carried his bat again, being last out. He found the pace bowling of former Academy colleague Campbell Macmillan a real challenge, but he triumphed.Wisdom is currently living in Bulawayo with his parents again and played his club cricket in 2001/02 for Macdonald Club. He scored only two fifties for them in the national league, though, saying, "I’m not used to the one-day game; I’m used to the longer version of the game, like the Logan Cup." However, with his skill and dedication he will no doubt learn to adjust, and is already showing a wider range of strokes in first-class cricket. He has become more consistent and is losing his tag of being a second-innings batsman.Cricket heroes: Sachin Tendulkar, `for the way he moves his feet, the way he hits the ball’. Sir Donald Bradman.Toughest opponent: Heath Streak. "The bowlers who give me the most problems are those who swing the ball away from me, like John Vaughan-Davies from Midlands. I can handle the guys who are quick."Proudest achievement: Selection for the Matabeleland provincial side and for the CFX Academy.Best friends in cricket: "Everyone is my friend, the whole Academy."

Should Celtic sign Finn Ole Becker?

This summer is one of the biggest in recent history for Celtic as new manager Ange Postecoglou desperately tries to repair the rubble from a disappointing campaign.

The Hoops have already welcomed Liam Shaw and Osaze Urhoghide to the club but they need to press on and welcome more new faces to Parkhead.

On the chalkboard

One of the biggest areas of concern this summer is in the middle of the park. Scott Brown has departed Celtic after exiting for a player-coach role with Aberdeen and that has left a significant void not just in terms of his technical and physical ability, but also in terms of his leadership skills.

Shaw could fill in for Brown in the middle, while Ismaila Soro is a name who should now earn more minutes, but both players are still particularly raw.

The Ivorian caught the eye on a number of occasions last season, prevailing in 2.2 tackles per game and winning as many as ten successful challenges against Lille in the Europa League. However, like Brown in his formative days, he still lacks tactical discipline.

The Bhoys have been linked with a move for somebody who Postecoglou knows well in Aaron Mooy, but their perfect Brown replacement lies elsewhere.

The solution

Speaking on the Cynic podcast about midfielders Celtic should have on their shortlist, they suggested St Pauli youngster Finn Ole Becker as a potential acquisition.

The midfield general is just 21 years of age but has all of the qualities which would enable him to thrive in Glasgow.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-news-doig-nketiah-mccann” title= “Read the latest Celtic transfer news!”]

Described as “very exciting” on the podcast, the German started 27 times last term in Bundesliga 2, combining progressive ball carrying with eye-catching defensive work.

The Cynic lists one of Becker’s strengths as defensive positioning, something which can be seen in his 1.3 tackles per game last season.

Although he lacks a huge physical presence, his slight and agile frame allows him to move about the pitch in a swifter way compared to Brown in his final few campaigns at Celtic.

Pivotally, he also possesses the ability to progress the play. Becker ranks in the 78th percentile across similar leagues for dribbles per 100 passes (7.7) and is in the 84th percentile for key passes per 90 minutes.

The German’s decision making is intelligent, something which sets him apart from Soro, who has a tendency to be erratic with his choices.

Becker wouldn’t be a like-minded Brown replacement but he’d still be able to provide a similar screening in front of the back four. His ability to roam forward could also be important when transitioning between defence and attack.

Valued at £2.5m to £4m, he’d be a bargain for Postecoglou to snap up in the coming weeks.

AND in other news, Celtic open talks to sign £8.5m gem of the “highest quality”, Ange will love him…

West Indies still hold whip

The third Cable & Wireless Test went through a succession of contortions on the third day yesterday but it would have taken the elasticity of an Indian yoga master to have turned it on its head

Tony Cozier05-May-2002The third Cable & Wireless Test went through a succession of contortions on the third day yesterday but it would have taken the elasticity of an Indian yoga master to have turned it on its head. For all the sudden twists and turns, the West Indies remained as strongly placed as when they routed India for 102 on the opening day. They extended their lead to 292 before lunch after captain Carl Hooper and Shivnarine Chanderpaul duly completed their second centuries and their second double-century stand of the series and in spite of the customary collapse of their tailend, the last six wickets falling for 18.Inevitably, they had to contend with more tenacious resistance from the Indian batsmen on an ideal pitch than in the feeble first innings. But they recovered their composure after a chaotic second session to remove the top four in the Indian order for 169 by close, called seven overs before schedule, just past 6 p.m.It left India, with a tail as negligible as their own, still 123 short of avoiding another heavy defeat at Kensington Oval where they have been beaten in six of their previous seven Tests.Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar, the two whose records place them in the elevated company of modern batsmen with averages above 50, have already gone cheaply. And India’s chances of protecting their 1-0 lead in the series now lies with the last of their specialist batsmen, captain Saurav Ganguly and V.V.S.Laxman.They spent the last 23 overs of the day together in a partnership of 51 and resume this morning. But had Ramnaresh Sarwan been able to cling on to sharp chances at short-leg before either had scored neither as difficult as one he held earlier in the same position and had Laxman’s edged catch to the ‘keeper off Pedro Collins at 15 not been negated by a no-ball, the match might well have been over already.India’s slim hopes of getting back into contention flickered more than once as they summarily despatched Ridley Jacobs and the four fast bowlers after removing Hooper for 115 and followed with their best opening partnership for the series of 80 between Shiv Sunder Das and Wasim Jaffer. The three-quarters of an hour in which the West Indies’ first innings folded and the two hours of the second session provided an anxious period for the home team that again raised doubts over whether they have the resources and resolve to make the most of an advantage, even one as overwhelming as this. The diminutive Das, shell-shocked after his several failures on tour, was alarmingly dropped off Dillon’s chest-high lifter by Stuart Williams, low down at fourth slip, when three. While Cameron Cuffy kept the pressure on with maiden after maiden his figures at close, 18-15-3-0, were scarcely believable Collins especially fed Jaffer’s obvious strength off the backfoot through the off-side.The slim right-hander kept peppering the boundary between point and extra-cover and, even when he slapped a Collins long-hop low to the swooping Sarwan at extra-cover, third umpire Billy Doctrove wasn’t persuaded by the television replays that the catch had carried.Jaffer was then 35 and it took Das’ misplaced optimism over a single to cover and Chanderpaul’s swift pick-up and direct underarm hit to end his innings with a run out.India were 85 for one at tea but the West Indies clearly regrouped during the interval. The remarkable Cuffy, the aggressive Dillon and the more accurate Collins pinned down Das and Dravid to such an extent on resumption that they could only eek out 16 from 13 overs. The pressure duly told.Das’ dismissal might have been freakish but Dravid and Tendulkar were victims of the new West Indian intensity. In the second over of a new spell, Adam Sanford drew a drive at a wide ball from Dravid and Jacobs lunged to his right to gather a difficult catch.Right away, Ganguly stabbed his second ball into and out of Sarwan’s grasp but the miss was quickly forgotten in the cacophony from 10 000 voices that greeted another cheap Tendulkar dismissal.Defending on the back foot against Dillon, he was taken on the pad and not even the Mormon Tabernacle Choir could have matched the decibels when umpire Ashoka deSilva nodded his head and raised his finger on the appeal.Tendulkar has now had scores of nought, nought and eight in his last three innings. It was to be the last West Indian success for the day but their stranglehold had been scarcely eased. It was loosened briefly after Hooper was out an hour and a half into the day.The skipper, 70 at the start, finally fell to a skied off-side catch from off-spinner Harbhajan Singh for 115, while the left-handed Chanderpaul was unbeaten 101 before Jacobs and the bowlers capitulated in familiar fashion. It was a continuation of the prolific form the two Guyanese brought into the series with a stand of 293 in the drawn first Test in Georgetown when Hooper compiled 233 and Chanderpaul 140, the highest Test scores for each. Now they recorded their second hundreds in a series for the first time, Hooper also passing 400 in a series for another first.Hooper had overcome an uncertain start and a lucky break from the third umpire on a television replay for run out at 15 the previous day. Since then, not much missed the middle of the bat.He proceeded to his 12th Test hundred with three rasping off-side boundaries in the same over off the left-arm swing bowler Asish Nehra whose inconsistency was punished by both batsman.Chanderpaul was 91 when Hooper’s innings of five-and-three-quarter hours was ended as his attempt for a 19th four skewed off the leading edge.Recent experience would have alerted him to the necessity of gathering the nine runs needed for his fourth Test hundred as quickly as he could. The last six West Indian wickets in the series had contributed 38, 65 and 51 and he just managed to get to his landmark before his partners deserted him.Jacobs continued the batting woes of wicket-keepers in the series by edging his fourth ball to the keeper off Nehra, who soon bounced out Dillon.Harbhajan, otherwise ineffective on the true pitch, then removed Pedro Collins and No.10 Adam Sanford with successive balls.Cuffy denied him his second Test hat-trick by edging a single past slip, but he promptly and comically ran himself out at the non-striker’s end, scampering for a run that Chanderpaul refused and then stumbling as Harbhajan broke the stumps. On the ground where he recorded his first Test hundred in the corresponding Test against India five years ago, Chanderpaul’s innings of six hours, 10 minutes were chanceless and authoritative. The West Indies won then in a tight finish. They should so do again with much more comfort.
