Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, John Hartson has revealed Manchester United are in dire need of a major rebuilding job.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have endured a difficult start to the season, picking up just eight points from their opening six Premier League games.
Last Sunday, Chris Sutton insisted in his Daily Mail column that it would cost around £1bn to sort out the current United squad, and now Hartson has echoed his former Celtic teammate’s sentiments.
He said: “I’ve got to agree with Chris. They need a real shuffle of the pack and you’ve got to wonder whether Solskjaer’s the man to do it or whether they’ll bring somebody else in. It just doesn’t look good enough. It doesn’t look good enough. All the way through.
“I think they’ve got three four very, very good players. But you look at Rashford who’s in awful form right now. He’s not hitting his peak at the minute.”
This is exactly what happens when you don’t appear to have a structure to your transfer policy. You get pulled around left, right and centre by managers who simply ask for what they want, rather than what the club needs.

The Red Devils’ limp defeat to West Ham encapsulated everything that is wrong at United. From the abject performance on the pitch, to the frankly unbelievable interaction between Ed Woodward and Phil Jones in the stands, the situation is a complete mess.
Hartson’s honest assessment on the size of the task at hand makes for worrying reading. This is no longer a squad that just needs a little tweaking here and there.
Major surgery is needed, and that could well spell the end of Solskjaer’s time at the club too.

West Ham will look to continue their six-game unbeaten run in the league when Crystal Palace visit on Saturday but Aaron Cresswell will have to keep Wilfried Zaha quiet if they are to achieve that.
On the chalkboard
The Hammers have looked a different proposition so far this season and the fact they have conceded only four league goals suggests they are more difficult to beat, and the left-back has played a role in that.
Cresswell found himself out of the team at the start to season but has made the most of his chance to impress, responding to his exclusion with two well-executed goals against Manchester United and Bournemouth.

However, another man beginning to find his best form is Zaha, who has taken longer than usual to spark into life after a frantic summer which saw endless speculation about the prospect of him leaving Selhurst Park.
If the 29-year-old manages to deal with the winger he will add to the contingent of supporters who continue to back him, and in doing so help to silence the doubters who believe he is past his best.
Palace have begun the season in good form but it is away from home where they have faltered, with both of their league losses coming against Sheffield United and Tottenham on the road.
Zaha didn’t affect either of those matches and he often finds life difficult against West Ham, with only two goals in ten matches against the Hammers, and only one win in that time too.
That means if Cresswell performs to the standards he has set so far he could negate the 26-year-old’s threat, with an average of one interception per game showing he is able to cut out the supply to the winger – and that could be key.
WhoScored also record that he has made a total of six tackles across his three matches, but not many opponents he will have faced possess the same dribbling quality of the Cote d’Ivoire international.
Zaha’s average of four successful dribbles, as per WhoScored, underlines the threat he has with the ball at his feet – even when not at his best.
However, if he can turn that threat into productivity in the final third, as he did last time out to assist Andros Townsend against Norwich, then Cresswell and his defensive teammates will have a very difficult task to contain him.
Steven Gerrard’s Istanbul heroics. Tony Adams’ “would you believe it” volley against Everton. Terry Butcher with a strapping around his head. Iconic moments from iconic footballers.
Leading by example off-the-pitch, consoling dejected teammates after a heart-breaking loss, and inspiring the team to a dramatic victory. Footballing history is littered with great captains, both domestically and abroad. But as we continue to move into this modern age, the influence of the man with the armband is dying.
Much to the chagrin of Alan Hansen’s old-school mentality, the Premier League’s biggest sides aren’t home to screaming warriors, bellowing words of encouragement, pumping their fists in the air, and throwing around expletives when they’ve lunged in for a two-footed tackle from 50 yards away. It’s over Alan, settle down now.
This new era is perhaps most typified by events in London over the past couple of weeks. Arsenal and Chelsea are two clubs who have been blessed with some of the league’s greatest ever captains – Patrick Vieira and John Terry to name just two. But their current managers’ comments on two much-maligned midfielders symbolises just how much the landscape has shifted.

First, Unai Emery made the bold decision to appoint Granit Xhaka his full-time Gunners captain – the Swiss star, whose biggest highlight this season was crunching into Son Heung-min to give away a penalty in the north London derby. Then Frank Lampard hailed Maurizio Sarri puppet Jorginho for his ”leadership’ qualities. What? You really have to rub your eyes to make sure it’s true.
The duo are not amongst the most popular with their fans, and Xhaka in particular received jeers from the Emirates faithful after he was hooked during the second-half of the 3-2 win against Aston Villa earlier this season. Despite acknowledging it after the game, Emery still went on to give the 27-year-old the honour of being the club’s skipper.

If you thought that decision was questionable, then Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirming that you could “probably” call Ashley Young the Manchester United captain takes the cake. The make-shift full-back – who isn’t first-choice at Old Trafford – and was booed on the club’s pre-season tour earlier this summer, sees his name join the likes of Roy Keane, Nemanja Vidic, Bryan Robson and Wayne Rooney in the list of United players to wear the armband. Yes, very understandable.
Captains used to be figures who fans and players could rally around. Now, managers are happy if only the latter are satisfied. As long as their choices retain the respect and admiration of the dressing room, then why on earth does it matter if Joe Bloggs expresses a personal vendetta against them on social media? They’re not there to appease the supporters. All the important work goes on behind the scenes, where the majority of people don’t have access to.
To put things into context in just how little the role means nowadays, look no further than Arsene Wenger’s truly comical verdict on whether Arsenal didn’t have a captain for the second-half of their clash against Manchester City, after Laurent Koscielny’s substitution at the break.
“Err, I don’t remember. No it is a good question. Nobody asked me who is captain.”
Cue uproar? Nope, not quite. It was just brushed off as ‘oh, silly old Arsene’. The bigger picture was something that people failed to grasp. In the end, a side that were 2-1 down at half-time, and with their captain off the pitch and questions over whether the armband had been passed on, equalised just eight minutes into the second-half to earn a point at the Emirates. They didn’t exactly fall apart.
The comeback encapsulated everything about how insignificant the captaincy has become.
Just like the Queen, it’s purely ceremonial. Going into the referee’s office before the game and handing in a team-sheet. Other than that, they are very much just like the rest of the ten players they head on to the pitch with.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen produced another awful performance in his side’s 3-0 defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday, and it’s got to the point now where the contract rebel’s exit can’t come soon enough.
Having found himself on the substitutes’ bench for the 7-2 horror show against Bayern Munich during the week, the Denmark international was back in the starting XI at the Amex, but he – like the majority of his teammates – ultimately failed to show up as Spurs fell 13 points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool despite only being eight games into the season.
It isn’t the first time the 27-year-old has disappointed in recent weeks either, picking up a measly 3/10 rating from Football London for his display on the road against Olympiacos.
He actually fared even worse in the same publication at the weekend, with a 2/10 score being accompanied by the verdict that this was “possibly his worst performance in a Spurs shirt”.
Not exactly a glowing endorsement of him, and it’s hard to argue when you look at some of the attacking midfielder’s statistics against Graham Potter’s men.
According to SofaScore, he lost possession on 19 occasions, while he failed to produce a single accurate cross from the four he attempted – perhaps part of the reason why the visitors failed to get on the score-sheet.
In addition, he was dribbled past by an opposition player on one occasion and failed to make a key pass against the Seagulls.
Marca reported recently that Eriksen has rejected every contract he has been offered by Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy as he waits on a proposal from Real Madrid, and that he has no intention of committing his future to the north London club.
While he has clearly been an important player throughout the last few years for Spurs, scoring 67 goals and providing a further 87 assists in 288 matches in all competitions according to Transfermarkt, he is anything but right now.
On this evidence the quicker his exit comes around the better, for everyone involved.
Leeds United could look to sign another couple of players on loan in the January transfer window, that is according to a report from Football Insider.
[ad_pod ]
It is thought that they will look to do so if some of their current loanees are recalled by their parent clubs.
Two players who are currently on loan at Leeds could be recalled in January.
Jack Clarke could be taken back by Tottenham Hotspur after failing to make a single appearance in the Championship this season.
He was signed by Spurs in the summer but sent straight back to Elland Road on loan. However, with the club having six players on temporary deals and only being allowed to have five of them in the matchday squad, the young winger has often been left out.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are thought to be considering recalling Eddie Nketiah, who hasn’t started at all in the league. The striker has often impressed in his cameo appearances, scoring twice and providing an assist but Marcelo Bielsa has stuck with Patrick Bamford as his first choice centre-forward.
Should they lose the duo, they will look to replace them with more loan players, as per Football Insider.
Owner Andrea Radrizzani has admitted that the club cannot afford to buy players due to their high wage bill, but he will allow Bielsa to bring in a couple more loan players as they look to seal automatic promotion.
There is no doubt that Leeds could lose both Nketiah and Clarke in the January transfer window. Neither are getting the amount of game time that their parent clubs would want, and in Nketiah’s case there are other clubs who would be interested in taking him for the second half of the season including Bristol City.
If the duo do go, then the Whites will almost definitely need reinforcements in the January transfer window as they would be left with just 20 first team players and that includes youngsters Leif Davis and Jordan Stevens.
Leeds fans would almost certainly not be happy to see Nketiah leave, with many of them believing that he should be in the team ahead of the misfiring Bamford. But at this point, it is hard to see Arsenal allowing him to stay given his lack of opportunities.
Leeds fans, should Eddie Nketiah and Jack Clarke be given more first team opportunities? And who would you sign if they are recalled by their parent clubs in January? Let us know in the comments below…
