There appears to be a bit of excitement building up over at the Hawthorns after Matt Wilson of Express & Star provided a more positive update on West Brom’s pursuit of Basel striker Albian Ajeti.

After previously claiming that West Brom were put off by the wage demands of the 22-year-old, he now states that talks between the two remain ongoing with the striker’s wage demands not as incompatible as first believed.

Ajeti scored 21 goals in 43 appearances for Basel last term, including goals in both the Champions League and Europa League qualifying stages.

The Swiss league is already well underway for this season and the 6 foot forward has made his presence known, bagging a goal and two assists in his only appearance so far.

A number of fans took to social media to share their opinion on the potential arrival with one supporter declaring the Switzerland international was the exact kind of striker the club needed and that if they can pull it off he would be more than happy with the signing.

Others labelled him a top-class player and a goalscorer with one fan describing Ajeti as good in the air with stamina. Another member of the Baggies faithful said that he will fit right in if he joins.

Liverpool fans were impressed with Joe Gomez’s performance as the Reds lost to Manchester City in the Community Shield at Wembley.

The former Charlton Athletic defender played at both centre-back and right-back during the game against the Premier League champions and for periods was matched up against Raheem Sterling at the national stadium.

Sterling, of course, scored against his old club but fans were still impressed with Gomez’s performance.

Of course, the 22-year-old has enjoyed a rapid rise at Anfield, making a total of 67 appearances for the club. He can play at both full-back and at centre-back – making 51 appearances at right-back and 36 in the heart of defence.

His excellent showings for the Reds have seen him earn a total of seven England caps to date and fans have praised Gomez after his performance on Sunday afternoon.

Jack Clarke played 70 minutes of Leeds United’s 3-0 win over Salford City in the first round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday night.

The 18-year-old has not been involved in the Championship this season but was named in the starting XI at the Peninsula Stadium.

Clarke is, of course, now only on loan at Leeds having completed a move to Tottenham Hotspur during the summer transfer window.

Indeed, the teenager has signed a deal with Spurs until the summer of 2023 but was immediately loaned back to the Whites for the 2019-20 campaign.

It will be very interesting to see how involved the teenager is this season when considering that he will be moving on next summer.

A number of Tottenham fans closely watched the attacker’s performance against Salford and there were some mixed views on how he performed on the night.

Former Rangers star Neil Murray believes that the Europa League games are the nerviest of the season and could have an impact on Steven Gerard’s side.

What’s he said?

Speaking to The Scottish Sun, Murray believes that qualification to the Europa League group stages will be important for the club as they look to build for a successful season, and it will be nervy.

The Light Blues face FC Midtjylland in the penultimate round of Europa League qualification, knowing they face either Legia Warsaw or Atromitos in the final round should they defeat the Danes.

Murray thinks it’s important for a club like Rangers to be in European competition, stating: “Without a doubt, these are the nerviest games of the whole season. There is a lot of prestige and finance attached to reaching the group stages of Europe.”

Do Rangers need European football this season?

Murray’s claims that the “prestige and finance” of getting to the group stages of the tournament is correct for a club like Rangers. Yet, is that what the club need just now?

Obviously, all money earned is welcome and it’s a nice experience to play in front of packed stadiums across Europe but the club should have their eyes on a different objective this season.

Last year was a season of two halves, the form in the second half of the season was brilliant, with results a bit more patchy in the opening half of the campaign. While a number of factors aided to this (Gerrard getting more experienced as a manager and the arrivals of Jermain Defoe and Glen Kamara in January) not having to play Thursday-Sunday must’ve helped, as they dropped out of the group stages of the Europa League in December.

Last season’s split in results from the first half of the campaign and the new year could be reason enough to suggest that dropping out of the Europa League wouldn’t be terminal for the Gers’ season.

Swansea moved up to second in the Championship with their win over QPR on Wednesday evening, and fans were blown away by the performance of Newcastle loanee Freddie Woodman.

The Swans came away from Loftus Road with all three points, as goals from Bersant Celina, Borja and Sam Surridge gave the visitors a 3-1 victory.

It’s not the goalscorers who are getting all the attention however, as Woodman dropped a goalkeeping master-class on the night.

He did concede just after the hour mark to a Jordan Hugill header, but the hosts produced a whopping 22 shots and seven corners, barraging the youngster’s goal all night.

The 22 year-old produced a brilliant save early on to deny Eberechi Eze and added a couple more stops after the break, but it was his command of his box that was really impressive.

Magpies goalkeeper Martin Dubravka attracted a shock link to Juvenus this summer, so could Woodman be the man in line to replace the Slovakian if he does eventually leave Tyneside?

According to La Nazione (via Calcio Mercato), Fiorentina are lining up a summer swoop for Manchester United midfielder Fred.

What’s the word?

The Brazil international has yet to feature under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season, and has struggled to establish himself in the Red Devils’ first-team since his big-money move from Shakhtar Donetsk last summer.

Now, the report claims Fiorentina are contemplating make a move for the 26-year-old and the Italian side value the midfielder at €30m (£27.2m).

It adds that whilst the Viola have made an enquiry about his securing his services, it is still yet unclear whether United would be willing to let him go following the departure of Ander Herrera earlier in the summer transfer window.

Lack of depth

Surely United can’t afford to lose another player without having the opportunity to replace them? Even with Fred only being on the fringes of the squad at the moment, he still represents a proven option from his time in Ukraine. The Red Devils signed no midfielders in the summer window but have seen the likes of Herrera and Marouane Fellaini leave this calendar year.

To kick the season off, Solskjaer has had to make do with a midfield two of Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay, and the options to replace the duo in case of injury or loss of form are incredibly limited, with Nemanja Matic the only other senior option in the middle of the park.

United could really struggle if injuries begin to take their toll over the course of the season, and so really need every one of their current squad to do their bit. Letting Fred leave would be tantamount to a massive oversight on the Red Devils’ part.
