Liverpool fans want Fabinho to start vs Atletico

Liverpool face Atletico Madrid on Tuesday as they look to get their Champions League campaign back up and running with a bang.

The Reds will travel to the Wanda Metropolitano, where they won the trophy last season, to play a team that is not at the top of their game right now – Los Rojiblancos are currently 4th in La Liga and have scored just 25 goals so far in the competition.

No clues: Can you name the season these iconic Liverpool images belong to?

However, it will still be a difficult match for Jurgen Klopp’s team, and he will need to select the right XI.

And it seems that many fans want to see Fabinho, who is valued at £63m by Transfermarkt, be given the nod in central midfield. The Anfield Edition asked their supporters who should start alongside Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum in the middle of the park, and the Brazil international was the stand-out choice.

The 26-year-old only started on the bench in the last match against Norwich City, but despite the Reds’ win in that game, the fans want the former AS Monaco to return.

Others believe that the nature of the clash requires him to be involved from the off.

A trip to Atletico Madrid, despite their troubles this term, still has plenty of potential to be a tricky fixture.

Therefore, starting Fabinho – who was called the best defensive midfielder in the world in September by Gary Neville (Sky Sports via Metro) – would not be a bad choice.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are leading the race for this Premier League youngster…

Crystal Palace were spot on with Krzysztof Piątek stance

Back in January, Przeglad Sportowy revealed that Crystal Palace were the side who were most ‘determined’ to sign Krzysztof Piątek from AC Milan.

It would’ve been a gamble to sign the former Genoa attacker, as he had notched only four goals in 18 Serie A appearances for the Italian giants in the first half of the campaign.

Eventually, the Poland international – who was also believed to be on Tottenham’s radar – ended up moving to Bundesliga outfit Hertha Berlin in a deal worth £23.5m.

However, his form since then has proved that the Eagles were right not to take a gamble on the Pole.

In four Bundesliga outings for Hertha Berlin, Piątek has failed to score a single goal – that is despite taking an average of 2.3 shots per game.

The 24-year-old has also registered 3.5 unsuccessful touches per game for the German side, while also finding himself on the winning team in just one of his three league appearances.

The last of which saw Hertha Berlin suffer an embarrassing 5-0 defeat to FC Koln on their own turf.

In that loss, Piątek was handed a miserable 5.75 match rating by WhoScored after having zero shots, recording zero key passes and registering a woeful six unsuccessful touches.

Hertha Berlin took an expensive gamble on the player who had struggled for goals in the first half of the campaign, and they have not seen their faith in the striker rewarded as of yet due to his extremely poor performances.

Premier League Inflation: You won’t believe how much these famous transfers would cost today…

One side who will presumably be happy with what they’re seeing right now though may be Crystal Palace, who will be thankful that they weren’t the ones to sign the misfiring Piątek last month and watch him bumble through games for them – especially seeing as Roy Hodgson’s side are the Premier League’s joint-lowest scorers, so the pressure truly would’ve been on the Polish striker to deliver the goods.

In other news, Crystal Palace have every right to be feeling sceptical after a recent scouting mission…

Leeds United: Danny Mills tips club to buy Jack Harrison in the summer

Former Leeds United defender Danny Mills thinks that the West Yorkshire club should take up the option to buy winger Jack Harrison in the summer transfer window.

The 23-year-old is currently spending his second successive season on loan with the Whites from Manchester City. However according to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay, the Elland Road outfit do have an option to buy the former England under-21 international for just £8 million at the end of the campaign.

Mills believes that fee represents excellent value for money considering Harrison’s performances this season and has admitted that he believes that the winger would be a good signing for the West Yorkshire side if they were to get a permanent deal over the line.

When discussing Leeds potentially buying Harrison, the former right-back told Football Insider: “At the end of last season I think Manchester City wanted £15million for him, he is good but he has not got a pack of diamonds in his pocket. That was a little bit expensive for how well he had done. Now, the option at £8million is very viable indeed.

“He reminds me of Jason Wilcox. He is going to hug the touchline, get good crosses into the box and works his socks off. Very rarely lets you down. He is of that ilk. He is not the type of player that will get you 15 goals a season but what he gives you is width and work rate.

“At £8million, whether it is Premier League or Championship, it is a really good buy.”

It is hard to argue with Mills here, on the face of it signing Harrison for just £8 million would surely represent good business from a Leeds United point of view.

The former New York City FC man has been excellent for Marcelo Bielsa’s side this season, scoring five goals and providing six assists in 36 Championship appearances (Transfermarkt). Added to that he also averages two key passes, 1.6 shots and 1.9 dribbles per game (WhoScored) which shows his attacking influence.

The quoted fee is more than affordable, particularly if they are promoted to the Premier League and given that he is just 23 it would be an investment in a player who could still significantly improve his game in the coming years.

West Brom fans rave over Kyle Edwards in FA Cup loss

West Brom crashed out of the FA Cup on Tuesday evening as they succumbed to a 3-2 defeat to Premier League outfit Newcastle United at the Hawthorns.

The Baggies can now focus fully on clinching the Championship title as they only hold a one-point advantage over second-place Leeds United with ten games remaining.

Slaven Bilic’s intentions were clear to see from the off after the Croatian made nine changes to his starting XI as the likes of Chris Brunt and Gareth Barry featured while there was no place for any of Matheus Pereira, Jake Livermore or Semi Ajayi.

Albion very nearly completed a stunning comeback, coming from 3-0 down to 3-2 but time was not on their side with Kenneth Zohore slotting home in injury time.

Despite the defeat, fans were rather pleased with what they saw from one of their fringe players, Kyle Edwards.

Here’s what has been said…

The 22-year-old was described as “absolutely superb” and “class” by some supporters while one claimed the winger reminded everyone of his potential.

Another fan labelled him as a “talent”.

It was Edwards’ 27th appearance of the season but only his 13th start and fans were hugely impressed, leading to calls for him to be amongst the starting lineup at the weekend or at the very least, back involved on the bench.

The youngster picked up the highest rating (7.9) of any Albion player on SofaScore after managing six successful dribbles, four key passes and two accurate crosses.

Edwards is currently out of contract at the end of the season, but according to reports from The Athletic, the club and his representatives are close to agreeing to new terms.

There has been radio silence since then, but some fans would like to see the academy graduate earn an extension after this latest display against Premier League opposition.

Redmond has proven how important he is to Southampton

Southampton’s form has fallen off a cliff of late.

It wasn’t too long ago that Jeff Stelling was touting them for a potential top-six spot, but those ambitions feel like a bit of a distant memory after losing four of their last five games.

It’s no coincidence that the Saints’ form has coincided with the absence of one key man.

Redmond’s absence

The south coast club have been without Nathan Redmond over the past few weeks, and they’ve struggled without him.

Watch Southampton Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

They’ve found the net just four times in the four games he’s been absent, and of the six matches he’s missed all season, they’ve won just one of them.

The winger has been praised by teammates this season, and it’s no surprise that Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have looked a different team without him on the pitch.

Missing him

He may not have played a single minute of action since February 1st, but there can now be no doubt over how important he is to the side.

Ok, he’s not the biggest contributor of goals and assists, scoring three times and assisting once this season, but he’s often causing defences all sorts of problems without directly contributing to goals.

Indeed, Redmond has 1.8 shots per game and 2.3 dribbles per game, while also playing 1.2 key passes per match.

The Saints failed to find the net against Newcastle this weekend, and they scored just once against West Ham the week prior, two teams whose ambitions this season don’t stretch beyond staying in the division, and it seems as though they’ve been missing the creativity and flair that Redmond brings to the side.

Hopefully, the Saints see an upturn in form once the winger is back in action.

Man United fans react to interesting Paul Pogba update

According to The Athletic, Paul Pogba could remain at Manchester United this summer despite the intense speculation surrounding his future.

The France international is yet to play in 2020 due to an ankle injury, and it has been widely reported that the 2018 World Cup winner will again look to leave Old Trafford at the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

However, according to The Athletic, there are doubts whether there is a market for the midfielder, rated at £90m by Transfermarkt, due to his transfer fee and wages.

As expected, the speculation has drawn the attention of the United supporters.

And a number are still keen for Pogba to depart in this summer’s window.

Not everyone feels the same way about the 26-year-old, though, with a number of the club’s fans seemingly pleased that he could now stay at Old Trafford.

Separating the fairweathers from real fans: How much can you remember about United’s treble season?

It will be very, very interesting to see how this one plays out.

Injuries have restricted Pogba to just eight appearances for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side during the 2019/20 campaign.

He scored 16 times and provided 11 assists in 47 outings at club level last term, though, and the supporters might well be quick to forgive some of his conduct if he stays and provides similar numbers next season.

Meanwhile, a number of United fans have recently been lavishing praise on another of the club’s midfielders.

Spurs’ Jan Vertonghen tweets cryptic message

Tottenham Hotspur’s season is effectively over. They are out of all major cup competitions and sit some seven points adrift of the top four in the Premier League.Earlier this week they were dumped out of the Champions League by RB Leipzig on Tuesday night and long-serving centre-back Jan Vertonghen looked visibly distraught following the match, so much so that his manager Jose Mourinho was seen consoling him.

Premier League experts will get full marks: The ultimate quiz on top-flight transfer flops…

It could well have been the final time he has put on the white shirt for the club on the elite stage.

And this afternoon he decided to tweet a cryptic message to Twitter…

The Belgian is out of contract at the end of the season, and there have been no signs that talks have opened over a new deal between the two parties.

The Evening Standard have also suggested that he could follow ex-teammate Christian Eriksen to Inter Milan this summer.

Meanwhile, the league awaits a possible suspension to activity due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic sweeping the globe.

It remains to be seen what the future holds or what Vertonghen is trying to suggest, but posting such a random thing to social media at this time is only going to cause further speculation.

Arsenal: Club target Matty Longstaff in next step of Mikel Arteta’s master plan

According to TEAMtalk, Arsenal are targeting Matty Longstaff in what would be the next step of Mikel Arteta’s plan.

The reports claim that the north London club lead the way to sign the central midfield player but face competition from the likes of Everton, West Ham United, Borussia Dortmund, Ajax, Club Brugge, Inter Milan and Atalanta.

Longstaff is out of contract in June and would rather leave the Magpies than sign a new one, according to the article. As a result, the Gunners are the reported front-runners and signing the 20-year old could be a positive step in Arteta’s plan of building a more youthful team to hopefully dominate in the future.

The Spanish coach has turned to youth in his short spell not just as Arsenal manager but in his managerial career overall. The likes of Bukayo Saka, Matteo Guendouzi, Joe Willock, Gabriel Martinelli, Reiss Nelson and Eddie Nketiah have all enjoyed a fair number of appearances under the Spaniard, with the latter having his loan spell at Leeds United cut short to help the senior team out and the 20-year old has kept £54-million rated Alexandre Lacazette out of the starting eleven in recent games (via Transfermarkt).

The youngsters mentioned above have made 57 appearances between them in all competitions for the north London club under Arteta, scoring seven goals and providing a further six assists according to Transfermarkt.

Longstaff may be a decent addition to the Gunners midfield having been capped twice at England U-20 level and playing seven times in the Premier League this season, scoring two goals (via Transfermarkt).

Indeed, the central midfield department has arguably been a problem area for the Gunners given that Granit Xhaka was stripped of the captaincy in November (via BBC) and Lucas Torreira has not always started in this campaign, coming off the bench twelve times in all competitions (via Transfermarkt).

With that in mind, Longstaff could prove to be another handy youngster to have in Arteta’s armoury as he looks to build for the future, with the likes of Graeme Souness praising his ability to strike the ball, as well as Jamie Redknapp purring over how ‘tenacious’ he can be.

Arsenal fans, would Longstaff get into your starting eleven? Comment below!

Toni Martinez has found his feet since leaving West Ham

West Ham success stories such as Declan Rice and Jeremy Ngakia prove that there is a clear path to the senior squad for the most talented youth team players.

Toni Martinez, though, was unable to make the transition from the U23s to the senior squad.

A prolific centre-forward at youth level, plenty of the Hammers faithful were eager to see him offered an opportunity but he faded into the background before moving to Portuguese outfit FC Famalicão in July 2019.

But how has Martinez fared since leaving east London for a new challenge overseas?

In the midst of the Premier League hiatus, it’s a perfect opportunity to see how he’s getting on…

Slaven Bilic brought Martinez to the club in a deal worth £2.4m in 2016.

Signing from Valencia, the youngster arrived with decent goal scoring pedigree and that trend continued in West Ham’s youth sides.

He scored 25 goals in 29 appearances for the U23 side and his form prompted fans on social media to demand a senior call up.

In the end, though, Martinez made just three appearances for the club, with all of them arriving in the FA Cup.

After four different loan spells in England and Spain, Manuel Pellegrini allowed the promising striker to complete a permanent move to FC Famalicão.

It’s too early to say that the Irons made a glaring blunder but Martinez has certainly begun to deliver on some of the promise he showcased as a youngster.

Now 22 years old, he has found his feet in Portugal and scored 12 goals in 30 appearances, which makes him the club’s top goalscorer in all competitions.

There is still plenty of scope for improvement for the Spaniard in terms of his overall contribution, though.

He currently averages 0.6 key passes per game and just 0.4 dribbles, while he also completes just 13 passes per game, per Whoscored. All of these figures point towards a striker who is overly reliant on his goal scoring prowess and struggles to provide a breadth of qualities at the spearhead of the attack.

Naturally, it will take him time to settle in his new environment and become accustomed to the speed and style of Liga Nos, but his early goal return suggests this could be the beginning of a glowing stint in Portugal.

Perhaps the Irons will eventually rue to regret his exit from London Stadium.

Arsenal fans react to Samuel Umtiti reports

Arsenal fans have been left in a heated debate on social media after reports emerged linking them to an old-time target, Samuel Umtiti.

According to Sport, via SportWitness, three Premier League teams have contacted the 26-year-old over a potential summer switch with the Gunners leading the charge with their interest, although Barcelona are yet to receive any firm offers.

It is thought that the La Liga giants were hoping to cash in around €50m (£44m) for the Frenchman, and are looking for the ‘right offer’.

Plenty of supporters at the Emirates Stadium discussed the centre-back on Twitter with him receiving a mixed reception, some were for it, but the majority were fully against the idea of signing him.

Umtiti has played just 16 times this season, totalling a mere 1,209 minutes of action, via Transfermarkt and has always carried major injury doubts over the course of his Barca career.

Fabrizio Romano revealed that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is working on a centre-back this summer, but would the World Cup winner be the right man?
