A January deal for Ligue 1 star makes sense for Fulham

Despite being a promoted side, Fulham have played some great football and although they currently sit 15th in the league, the Cottagers are in good shape.

After a brilliant promotion campaign which saw Fulham beat Aston Villa at Wembley, Salvisa Jokanovic was strongly backed in the transfer market as the club brought in 12 players to help the manager keep the club in the Premier League.

Among those recruits were Nice midfielder Jean Michael Seri, the permanent deal of Aleksandar Mitrovic, and Andre Zambo Anguissa. Seri, especially as started to be a prominent player for the team and looks as though he could be a good signing for the club.

The recruitment drive at the club hasn’t finished there apparently as according to The Sun, Fulham are scouting another Ligue 1 star, this time, Lyon striker, Maxwel Cornet.

The Breakdown

According to the report, Fulham are weighing up a £18 million for the forward they tracked over the summer. A product of the Metz academy, Cornet joined Lyon in 2015 and has become a key player for the French side although his goal return isn’t exactly fantastic.

Quick, skilful and direct, Cornet’s game is ideally suited to the Premier League and could well thrive in Fulham’s possession-based style of football. Despite bringing in Andre Schurrle on loan over the summer, Fulham don’t have a wealth of options on the flanks.

While Cornet may not be an outstanding player, the potential is still there and he could well be sold for a large fee in the future.

Silva has got it spot on by axing Vlasic from Everton squad

It has been a poor start to the season for Everton and, while it is still early into his tenure at Goodison Park, Marco Silva is already coming under criticism.

And one of his most vocal critics so far has been the father of Nikola Vlasic.

The Breakdown

Vlasic has been loaned out to Russian side CSKA Moscow for the season, and the Croatian’s father, Yoshko Vlasic, has since hit out at Silva for sanctioning the move.

“Marco Silva is under enormous pressure because he loaned Nikola out,” Vlasic told Novilist (via HITC).

“Many fans and pundits believe Everton have big problems in midfield and Nikola is the player they need. Vlasic told Silva before leaving he considered himself the best midfielder in the team. The manager made a big mistake.”

Capable of playing in midfield and attack, by no means has Vlasic been the worst signing Everton have made in recent seasons.

However, Silva and director of football Marcel Brands’ recruitment drive in the summer that saw the likes of Richarlison, Bernard and Andre Gomes arrive at Goodison Park has seen Vlasic’s role in the squad become redundant — and rightly so.

In this moment of time, the Croatia international is not of the same ability as the trio and he has not shown anything in an Everton shirt to suggest otherwise.

In contrast to what his father believes, the Toffees have made the correct call in loaning Vlasic to CSKA Moscow.

Spurs should take a chance on £4.5m-rated Championship forward to support Harry Kane

Spurs will be looking to head into the international break in good form as they take on Cardiff City at Wembley today looking to make it eight games without a win for Neil Warnock’s side.

The summer was a long and boring one really for Spurs fans, with no new signings and a host of players arriving late back to the squad thanks to their World Cup exploits.

However, with the Premier League season now firmly in the swing of things, questions are beginning to be asked of the decision to not bring in any new names, as Spurs once again appear to struggle to juggle the demands of Champions League and Premier League action to good effect.

With January soon to be here in a few months, we think that Pochettino simply has to go out and strengthen, and one man we think would be an excellent bargain pick-up is Brentford strike ace Neal Maupay.

Valued at only £4.5m on Transfermarkt, the French striker has taken the Championship by storm this year, smashing in nine goals already for the Bees to fire Dean Smith’s into top six contention once again.

Maupay looks to have all the ability to make it in the Premier League, and Spurs have long needed a striker who is willing to fill the void left by Harry Kane when he is either rested or injured.

At just 22, he has plenty of time to improve as well, and while he might not be a big name signing, Maupay could well be a superb addition for the Londoners.

West Ham fans are spot on: Robert Snodgrass deserves to start against Tottenham

West Ham supporters have been pretty downbeat in recent times after seeing their side’s three-match unbeaten run in the Premier League come to an end last weekend.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men went into their encounter with Brighton having picked up seven points from their preceding three games, beating Everton and Manchester United alongside drawing with Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea. Yet the Hammers were unable to keep that fine run of form going at the AMEX Stadium on Friday night, with Glenn Murray’s effort midway through the first half sealing a narrow 1-0 success for the Seagulls, thus condemning West Ham to fifth loss of the season.

Thus, there have been many disappointed Hammers fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom have already taken to Twitter to speculate upon who Pellegrini should look to start against Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham next weekend.

Spurs have been resurgent of late in winning their last three Premier League matches to move up to fifth place in the table, and as such will pose a serious test to the Hammers when they visit the London Stadium a week on Saturday.

Yet several West Ham fans have taken to Twitter to call for the reinvigorated Robert Snodgrass to earn a recall to the starting eleven, and such has been his fine start to the season under Pellegrini, alongside Tottenham’s woes defending set pieces, those supporters are absolutely right.

Ultimately, the 31-year-old’s Hammers career looked as good as over following a loan spell at Championship side Aston Villa last season, with the winger failing to produce the goods for the Hammers following his move from Hull City back in January 2017.

However, he has been given an opportunity by new manager Pellegrini, and it’s one the Scotland international has taken in netting twice and laying on three assists in ten appearances in all competitions this term, all of which coming in their run to the last 16 of the Carabao Cup, where they will also face Pochettino’s Spurs.

More importantly, Snodgrass is looking more and more like the player the Hammers thought they signed from the Tigers little over 18 months ago, with the 31-year-old showing confidence down the flanks to get into dangerous positions and produce a cross, alongside a relentless work-ethic to help the team off the ball.

And those traits in particular will be crucial against Tottenham a week on Saturday, with the North Londoners likely to have more of the ball than the Hammers, and thus demanding Pellegrini’s side to be disciplined off the ball, and work hard to stay in shape and win it back.

And when on the ball, Snodgrass can cause the Spurs defence real problems, as Pochettino’s men have looked very vulnerable to set pieces so far this season, and the 31-year-old has the sort of quality from that area of the pitch which can seriously test the Tottenham rearguard.

As such, those West Ham fans calling for £6.3 million-rated Snodgrass (as per Transfermarkt) to start against Spurs are absolutely spot on, as the Scottish winger has the capabilities to really test Pochettino’s side a week on Saturday.

Liverpool simply have to beat their rivals to signature of England’s next big star

Things are going pretty swimmingly for Liverpool at the moment, with the club playing some excellent football under Jurgen Klopp to bring themselves into title contention.

The Reds made a big splash in the summer with some big money signings, and they look every bit the title contender this term.

However, more might well be needed in the long term to ensure they remain successful, and we at the Tavern think the club should be going all out to sign Ryan Sessegnon, who could well be one of the next top stars for England.

Sessegnon is comfortably one of the top talents in the game at the moment, and still only a teenager, has plenty of scope for improvement.

While the Reds do have Andy Robertson in the left back role, Sessegnon is too good a talent to simply pass up the opportunity of trying to sign, and he would be solid long term additon at Anfield.

Sessegnon has electric pace, is good in front of goal, and for such a young player, has bags of experience already.

If Liverpool are serious about being title contenders for years to come, then they have to keep capturing the top talent in the country, and Sessegnon certainly fits that profile.

Manchester City rival Tottenham in hunt for Bournemouth’s Ake

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham face competition in the hunt for Bournemouth defender Nathan Ake as Manchester City have joined the chase, according to The Sun.

What’s the word?

Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham could be set for significant changes next year in the heart of their defence as both Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld see their current deals expire at the end of the 2018-19 campaign, even though the north London outfit could choose to take up the one-year option they have on both players.

That has led the Lilywhites to pursue new recruits ahead of the January transfer window and Bournemouth’s Nathan Ake has been touted as a top-target, although The Sun reveals a fight is on the cards with Manchester City also expressing an interest.

The report states Pep Guardiola’s defending champions are considering a £40m move for the former Chelsea man, a fee which would be a significant outlay for Spurs as it would exceed the club-record fee they paid for Davinson Sanchez.

Is the race over?

Manchester City’s emergence in the hunt for Nathan Ake’s signature is bad news for Tottenham, who were already due to see an inflated price for the Netherlands international as Bournemouth are not willing to sell on the cheap.

Also a target for Manchester United, a bidding war could be set to occur in the January window and Tottenham cannot afford to get sucked into that battle as their finances are likely to be restricted by their imminent stadium move.

While the 23-year-old is seen as the perfect recruit for Tottenham, who could help craft him into one of the best defenders in the Premier League, Pochettino must now look elsewhere if he is to bolster his defensive line in January.

Liverpool fans beg Tottenham Hotspur to get a result against Manchester City

Liverpool’s unbeaten run in the Premier League has stretched to 10 games.

On Saturday afternoon, Jurgen Klopp’s side overcame Cardiff City 4-1 at Anfield.

Once again, the Merseyside outfit took a patient approach, but they dominated the ball and put together some attacking moves that were easy on the eye.

Mohamed Salah notched his fourth goal in three games in all competitions, while Sadio Mane scored twice and Xherdan Shaqiri nabbed his first strike for Liverpool.

The only blip was when the hosts conceded their first goal at Anfield since February.

Nevertheless, Klopp’s men moved to the top of the league table and they will stay there unless Manchester City defeat Tottenham Hotspur on Monday night.

The rivalry between Liverpool and Spurs has become more fierce in recent seasons due to the pair jostling for a top-four place.

Now, the Reds are focusing on the title race and some fans are keen for Mauricio Pochettino’s side to get a win or draw against City in order to keep the Merseyside outfit at the top of the standings.

Liverpool have not been awarded a penalty at Anfield for an entire year, fans react

Penalties can hugely influence the outcome of a game, and they are sometimes the cause of controversy.

Liverpool have been involved in numerous penalty claims, but the Reds have not been awarded one at their home turf of Anfield for an entire year.

In fact, the last time that the Merseyside outfit had the chance to net from the spot at home was on October 28, 2017 against Huddersfield Town.

Mohamed Salah lined up to take it but ended up failing to convert in front of the Anfield crowd.

The statistic has sparked a big reaction from Liverpool fans, with some suggesting that their arch enemies Manchester United regularly benefit from penalty calls at Old Trafford.

Even though Liverpool have failed to earn a penalty at Anfield for 12 months, it is not hugely affecting their form this season.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are Premier League title contenders for the first time in years, and they are currently unbeaten after 10 games.

Liverpool should snap up Southampton man as back up for consistent defensive performer

Liverpool’s season continued to march along this weekend as they saw off Fulham with ease at Anfield earlier today.

The Reds look to be the real deal this season, and it is looking like being a close run thing in terms of the Premier League title race this year term.

However, while the Liverpool squad is looking good, there is still room for the club to add more depth, and we think that they are going to need some solid back up to Andrew Robertson throughout the course of the season.

Therefore, we think that signing Southampton fullback Ryan Bertrand would be a superb piece of business for the club.

The Saints left back has been as consistent as they come in the last few seasons, and he has deservedly earnt England honours during this time, which is a testament to his excellent displays.

However, he will be desperate to win something, and moving to Liverpool might well be the ideal situation for him to go and get some silverware under his belt.

While Robertson is superb down the left, if injury was to strike, then Liverpool could be in trouble. This makes Bertrand the ideal signing, and he would no doubt take to the pressure of playing at Anfield like a duck to water.

Reds fans, what do you think? Would Bertrand be a good signing? Let us know in the comments!

Tottenham must spend big on midfield in January after another Sissoko shocker

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham fans were desperate for a new central midfielder in the summer transfer window, and Moussa Sissoko’s display vs Wolves proved once and for all that a midfield upgrade must be top priority in January.

There aren’t meant players in the Premier League that take more stick from their own fans than Sissoko, but the Frenchman didn’t do himself any favours on Saturday.

Mauricio Pochettino is clearly a big fan of his versatility and athleticism, and the injury crisis in midfield cleared the way for the 29 year-old to start at Molineux.

While the late Wolves fight back wasn’t enough to stop Spurs taking three points, Pochettino’s midfield just got completely bypassed at times.

Sissoko in particularly had almost no effect on the match, and the mounting injuries will surely prompt a mass midfield overhaul in 2019.

The 53-cap French international completed 83 per cent of his passes in the 3-2 win, but that was about the extent of his involvement.

He registered no shots, no key passes and just one successful dribble, and he didn’t make up for it on the defensive end either.

With zero tackles, zero interceptions no clearances, Pochettino simply must axe the controversial signing at the first opportunity.

So, Tottenham fans, who do you want to sign in January? Does Sissoko need to go? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
