Broadcasters set to provide record TV rights for SPFL

As reported by The Daily Mail, BT Sport are set to hand a massive boost to Scottish football by offering record breaking amounts of money to become the exclusive broadcasters of the SPFL.

What’s the story?

Currently, TV rights in Scotland are divided between Sky and BT Sport, with the former having access to Celtic vs Rangers games. That could all be about to change.

The Mail reckon that BT Sport are putting together a package that will beat the previous record of £31m per season to show top-flight Scottish matches.

At the heart of that is their desire to broadcast the big Glasgow derby and the broadcaster is currently in negotiations with SPFL chiefs to make the deal happen.

Will it come off?

It has every chance, especially when you compare to the amounts of money currently being spent on English football and UEFA Champions League by the broadcaster. Of course, Scottish football doesn’t attract the amount of prestige and viewing figures as those competitions do but the money being spoken about being spent on Scottish football is a drop in the ocean.

BT recently renewed their rights package for the two European competitions to the tune of £1.2bn. It’s an incredible sum and of course the cornerstone of their sports channels.

Scottish football hasn’t looked as attractive as it does right now to broadcasters and outlets for years and this new reported deal could kickstart a new era of exceptional interest in the Scottish game.

According to The Mail, when BT Sport won exclusive coverage of rugby’s Aviva Premiership, figures show attendances rose by 10 per cent and viewing figures by 13 per cent.

That kind of impact could be transformative for the game in Scotland.

Exclusive: The three Championship stars Aston Villa fans want Bruce to sign

Earlier this week the Championship announced the Team of the Season for 2016/17 and unsurprisingly, it didn’t include a single representative from Aston Villa. The Villans have disappointed upon their first campaign in the Championship, with Steve Bruce only managing to guide his side to 12th place – ten points away from a playoff spot.

But the Birmingham outfit boast one of the biggest transfer budgets in the division and will almost certainly go on spending spree this summer to make a real fist of a promotion push next season. Whilst the club will inevitably be drawn towards cheap talent from abroad, recruiting from the second tier could prove to be a real masterstroke – not only improving their squad with tried and tested Championship quality but also weakening those of their divisional rivals.

With that in mind, we asked Aston Villa fans earlier this week to vote for which Championship TOTS members they’d like to see Bruce swoop for this summer. The results of our exclusive poll have now been double and triple checked, so here’s a look at who made the top three…

3. Aaron Mooy

Aaron Mooy has been a revelation in English football since signing for Manchester City last summer and subsequently joining Huddersfield’s hipster revolution on loan. He’s gone on to claim three goals and five assists for David Wagner’s side whilst averaging the ninth-most created chances per match, 2.1, of any player in the Championship. Unlikely to be brought into the first team at the Etihad Stadium next term, Mooy should be available this summer. The Terriers will be keen to sign him permanently, however, whilst the Australian international is likely eager to test himself in the Premier League after such a fine season.

2. David Stockdale

Three different goalkeepers have represented Aston Villa in the Championship already this season, which shows how much of a problem position it’s been for the Birmingham outfit throughout 2016/17. That perhaps explains why Brighton’s David Stockdale took second place in our poll; he’s started all but one league fixture for Chris Hughton’s side this term and thoroughly impressed, ranking first throughout the division for clean sheets, 17, and penalty saves, three, whilst also producing 77 stops. With his contract due to expire this summer, the 31-year-old will be available on a free. But promotion at Brighton will almost certainly see him commit his future to the club.

1. Anthony Knockaert

An incredibly popular choice throughout our series of Championship polls and with good reason. Anthony Knockaert can lay claim to being the most exciting player in the second tier this season, consistently providing the magic to get Brighton over the line in their bid for automatic promotion. He’s played a hand in almost a third of their goals with 13 strikes and seven set-ups and has proved almost unplayable for opposition defences at times this term. Unfortunately for Villa fans, he looks certain to be in the Premier League one way or the other by the time 2017/18 comes around.

‘Levy doesn’t pay the money’ – Tottenham fans react to big transfer reports

With Chelsea having lost over the course of the weekend, the Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern have a renewed sense of hope in regards to the Premier Leauge title.Â

While Spurs have some catching up to do if they are going to be considered genuine challengers, Mauricio Pochettino’s vibrant young side are continuing to impress.

In fact, so much so that there have been big reports in regards to some of the homegrown players impressing so much at White Hart Lane of late. According to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is keen on the likes of Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Kyle Walker and Danny Rose.

Now, Spurs have somewhat of a history of selling their best players, though fans online do not believe Pep’s City slickers have much of a chance in landing them, citing the notorious Dan Levy as the main stumbling block.

That’s not to say there isn’t some trepidation in regards to the story, so here’s a closer look at how Spurs fans reacted.

Heaton opens up on Man United exit

Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton has claimed that leaving Manchester United on a free transfer in the summer of 2010 ‘was the best decision he ever made’.

Heaton spent eight years at Man United between 2002 and 2010, but the goalkeeper failed to make a single appearance for the Red Devils – spending time on loan with the likes of Swindon Town and Wycombe Wanderers – before leaving to join Cardiff City on a free.

The 31-year-old has since developed into one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the Premier League, with his form for Burnley over the last couple of seasons earning the Chester-born stopper a place in the England set-up.

Heaton has revealed that former Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson was not pleased with his decision to leave, but the Englishman does not regret seeking pastures new after failing to make the grade at Old Trafford.

Heaton told Sky Sports:

“He had me in the office to talk about a new contract and obviously I had decided it was time for me to go. He wasn’t best pleased at that moment in time.

“I had been there 13 years or so and I was walking out of the door on a free. The time and effort they had put in, I could understand it, but as ever, I have got so much respect for him.

“I always felt I needed to go and earn the stripes really. I always felt I was going to be good enough, I just wanted to go and get the experience, the practical experience, and at that point I didn’t have it.”

“That was probably the best decision I made. It was my decision. I stand by the decision, it was a tough one to make, with it being Manchester United having signed there as an 11-year-old.”

Heaton will come up against his former club on Sunday afternoon when top-four hopefuls Man United travel to Burnley in the Premier League.

Davies showed why Poch was wrong to leave him out with impressive display vs Palace

Ben Davies must have been nothing short of gutted when he was omitted from the starting lineup for Tottenham’s FA Cup semi-final clash with Chelsea last Sunday.

And he must have been borderline infuriated when his replacement at left wing-back, Heung-min Son, fouled Victor Moses inside the box with a sliding tackle so naively early it’s execution predated Anne Boleyn’s.

But after the South Korean’s disastrous contribution to Spurs’ 4-2 defeat at Wembley, the Wales international was brought back in for Tottenham’s trip to Selhurst Park on Wednesday night, playing a huge role in Mauricio Pochettino’s side keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 win.

Indeed, Davies lined up against the in-form Wilfried Zaha, who boasts one goal and five assists against top six opposition this season, and thoroughly excelled, making four tackles, six clearances and winning four aerial duels.

But they were by no means the defender’s only contributions in an impressive all-round display. He was also a force for Spurs going forward, launching eight crosses into the box, two of which found their target, and creating a further three chances.

It was a committed, all-action display from Davies that will make Pochettino think twice about not trusting him in big games going forward.

West Ham fans are desperate to sign Jermaine Defoe

Sunderland AFC have been relegated and such is the cut-throat world of football that rival fans are already circling the club like vultures hoping to pick off key players that might fit in at their sides.Despite crashing into the Championship, there are a number of decent players at the club and for West Ham United fans, one man in particular fits the bill; Jermain Defoe. The striker is of course a Hammers player and left the club over 10 years ago in rather acrimonious circumstances that didn’t exactly endear him to the Irons’ support.Since then he’s become a reliable English Premier League hitman, capable of scoring barrel loads of goals every single season.Despite his advancing age, 34, he did that again this term, scoring 14 goals for the Black Cats. Ultimately it wasn’t enough to keep Sunderland up but that’s firepower that would go down very well at the Hammers.Slaven Bilic’s side have lacked that player with a poacher’s instinct all season. Is Defoe the answer?Following the Black Cats’ relegation, West Ham fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on it all…

Kieran Richardson could have reached the very top – now he can’t even find a club

Twelve years ago today, West Bromwich Albion completed what is still regarded by many as the greatest great escape in Premier League history, becoming the first ever club to stave off relegation after being bottom at Christmas.

The significance of this cannot be understated; before West Brom, it was deemed impossible to survive if you’d spent December 25th in bottom place. Since their great escape, however, the feat has been repeated twice by Sunderland and Leicester City. Although it’s proved too big a challenge on the most-part to get on the right side of the dropline before the end of the season, West Brom disproved the old adage and completely changed the mindset of inevitability. There’s no longer such thing as impossible in the Premier League.

Crucial to that was Kieran Richardson, who arrived from Manchester United on loan in January to inject life, unpredictability and flair into an otherwise workaday West Brom side. He scored three goals in twelve appearances but the prodigious winger’s performances went much further than that; he was their catalyst for not only new-found attacking verve but also a positive shift in mentality, and was duly held aloft by fans as they invaded the pitch on the final day of the season.

Aged just 20 upon his temporary move to the Hawthorns, Richardson’s illustrious loan spell hinted at a huge future at the very top of the game – most likely with United. But now 32, Richardson’s without a club after being released by Cardiff City in January, where he managed just six appearances in three months, and is seen as a bit of a joke figure in England. People poke fun at his role in Aston Villa’s demise, and how limited output forced the one-time winger to reinvent himself as a defender.

Those twelve games for West Brom proved to be the pinnacle of his career, yet they were no fluke either. Talent has never been the problem with Richardson and it could have all been very, very different; instead of becoming a mid-table, then relegation, then Championship journeyman, he could have been one of England’s best of his generation – perhaps even one of Europe’s, if not the world’s.

Before Richardson had turned out for West Brom, I’d crossed paths with him twice, somewhat inadvertently. The first time I saw him play was two years previous, when the Red Devils’ Under 18s breezed past Charlton Athletic in the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup. Richardson could’ve netted in the most spectacular of fashions; keepy-upping the ball just outside the penalty area, moving it around two defenders in the process, before unleashing a thunderous half-volley that looked destined to crash into the onion bag.

Alas, it did not – Richardson netted in the second leg instead – but at that point it was one of the most impressive flashes of individual quality I’d seen at The Valley. My beloved Addicks lost 3-1 on aggregate, but all I could talk about on the drive home with my dad was the United midfielder who’d ran the show. He looked like something truly special – a world-beater in the making.

The second instance of Richardson path-crossing I only realised several years later, when one of my tutors revealed they’d taught Richardson at a previous school. They painted a picture of an exceptionally talented and smart kid, but one that was all too aware of it. He’d been moved to a new school – along with infamous cousin and future Big Brother contestant Charley – to better accommodate his gift for the game.

They say your formative years decide your future, and you have to wonder whether it all came a bit too easy for Richardson when he was younger, leaving him lacking the natural hunger needed to step up to the next level by the time first-team football at Manchester United came around.

That is not to say Richardson’s career never progressed; in addition to his flurry of fine form at the Hawthorns, he was a key player at Sunderland for four straight seasons and enjoyed two decent years with Fulham as well. Yet, for a player who had already picked up eight England caps by the time he was 21, who had the world at his feet at Manchester United and had once been dubbed a natural heir to Ryan Giggs, Richardson’s career smacks of potential unfulfilled.

Perhaps the biggest disappointment is that Richardson was given every chance. We often bemoan limited opportunities for young English players these days, but Richardson was allowed to showcase his abilities in a West Brom side fighting for survival and made 22 Premier League appearances for United the season after. By the time he left Old Trafford in 2007, he’d featured 81 times for United across all competitions and was still being considered for England squads by Steve McClaren.

It would be disingenuous to speculate what exactly went wrong, whether it simply didn’t click for Richardson at first-team level, whether he became lost in the many distractions of the glamorous footballing lifestyle, whether he lacked that drive because of how gifted he was. But whilst some look at Richardson and laugh as he struggles to earn a short-term contract with Tony Adams’ Granada, I only feel sadness. Richardson had everything needed to reach the top of the game – now, he’s in danger of not being a part of it at all.

It just goes to show how talent can only take you so far. Any young footballers thinking they’ve already got it made need only look at the gulf between where Richardson could have ended up and where he is now to give themselves a reality check.

Revealed: 59% of Liverpool fans want Klopp to increase Mbappe bid

The summer transfer window hasn’t officially opened yet but Liverpool are already making manoeuvres in the market according to reports from the Spanish press.

Indeed, Marca claim the Reds have seen a club-record €75million (£64.86million) bid for in-demand striker Kylian Mbappe rejected by Monaco, who value the teenager at in excess of €100million.

No doubt, the Frenchman has just come to the end of a phenomenal season, playing a huge part in Monaco lifting the Ligue 1 title and reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League by netting 24 times across all competitions.

Likewise, Liverpool are seemingly in need of another striker. Divock Origi is a decent but hardly world-beating option, whilst Daniel Sturridge’s future remains unclear.

With that in mind, we asked Reds fans last week whether Liverpool should up their bid for Mbappe and although our poll was by no means conclusive, 59% think they should.

Would that be money well spent, or should Jurgen Klopp spread his budget elsewhere? Let us know by commenting below…

In Focus: Chelsea ready to outbid Man United in Alvaro Morata race

According to reports in the Sunday Mirror, Chelsea are planning to hijack Manchester United’s deal to sign Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata by offering £70m.

What’s the word, then?

Well, with Blues attacker Diego Costa edging towards the Stamford Bridge exit door after manager Antonio Conte text him to say that he wasn’t in his plans for next season, the Italian is looking for a replacement.

He wants to sign both Everton’s Romelu Lukaku and Morata according to the report in the Sunday Mirror, even though the Daily Mail says the latter has already agreed personal terms with the Red Devils as they look to find their own replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is ready to launch a £70m offer for the Real star in a bid to tempt the Spaniard to move to London instead where he would link up with international teammates such as Pedro, Cesc Fabregas, Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta.

Is Diego Costa definitely on his way out?

It could be complicated.

The 28-year-old’s former club Atletico Madrid want him, but as they are currently subject to a transfer ban and unable to complete any deals until the January transfer window, Costa would have to remain at Stamford Bridge until then.

Conte’s text message to the striker has also knocked £10m off of his price tag according to the Sunday Mirror, with Atletico only willing to offer £26m plus add-ons.

Would Morata be a good signing?

He certainly would be.

As well as being a statement of intent if they could get him and fight off interest from Manchester United, they would be getting a player with a lot of potential to become a Premier League star.

The 24-year-old scored 20 goals in 43 appearances in all competitions for Real last season after returning to the Spanish giants from Juventus, helping them to win the La Liga title and the Champions League.

Will they beat United to his signing?

If they offer more money and United aren’t willing to match, then of course they could.

With Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho seemingly keen on the Spaniard though, it seems unlikely and the battle between the two clubs for Morata could rumble on.

What’s the verdict, then?

Well, Chelsea need to back Conte after a disappointing start to their summer transfer business and getting Morata ahead of Manchester United would certainly cool the current tensions between the club and the manager.

Manchester United fans hit out at Souness following blast at Mourinho

Some Manchester United fans generally do not welcome criticism from ex-Liverpool players, and on this occasion, plenty have hit back at one former Red for his comments about Jose Mourinho.

Graeme Souness, who played and managed Liverpool during his career, has claimed that United made the wrong choice in appointing Mourinho last summer.

Under the Portuguese coach, the team’s playing style and particular results in the Premier League attracted criticism.

United did not have the most positive of domestic seasons as they finished sixth in the standings, but they did end the campaign with two trophies – the League Cup and Europa League.

In addition, winning the second tiered European competition resulted in automatic qualification to the group stages of this season’s Champions League.

Souness, though, has not been convinced by the former Chelsea boss. He told Yahoo Sport.

“I didn’t think Mourinho was right for United and I said that from day one. Because Guardiola was coming in an Manchester City, the people making decisions at Old Trafford felt compelled to go and get a big name manager and they ended up with Jose.

“He has taken on a very difficult job at United and struggled to find his find his best eleven last season, if he ever found it. A big concern for me that their best player for most of last season was a 35-year-old in Zlatan Ibrahimovic, with 35-year-old Michael Carrick also one of the top performers.

“Mourinho is used to winning league titles and finishing where he did last season in the Premier League will not be acceptable, but it won’t be easy to put it right.”

As expected, not many United fans agreed with Souness’s sentiments, and they were quick to discredit him on Twitter.
