Mickey Arthur set to be appointed Pakistan team director

Grant Bradburn likely to come in as assistant coach; Islamabad United’s Rehan Ul-Haq is expected to be team manager

Mickey Arthur and the PCB are close to agreeing a deal that will result in Arthur’s return to the Pakistan men’s side – but as team director and not, as previously, head coach. Talks between the two had ended three weeks ago when the PCB announced it was moving on in its search for a replacement for Saqlain Mushtaq, the outgoing Pakistan coach. The two sides had failed to reach an agreement on how such a role could work, given Arthur has a long-term deal with Derbyshire, which he does not want to end. But last week, Najam Sethi, the interim head of the PCB, revealed that he was continuing the pursuit of Arthur. ESPNcricinfo understands that an arrangement is close to being finalised now, with Arthur potentially starting from April 1 as team director.Related

Mickey Arthur could return as Pakistan head coach

PCB's talks with Mickey Arthur to coach Pakistan fall through

That designation, one in which Arthur will be a consultant rather than head coach, will make for an unusual management structure – at international level at least – in which he will not be with the Pakistan team on every tour but will have a handpicked group of support staff running operations. Lead among the support staff is expected to be former Pakistan fielding coach – and one-time head of their High Performance Centre – Grant Bradburn, in the role of a high-powered assistant coach. There will also be three coaches for batting, bowling and fielding, but no traditional head coach.During the English county season, Arthur will not be hands on with the team; Pakistan tour Sri Lanka this July for instance and are scheduled to host the Asia Cup in September. But once the county season is over, Arthur is expected to be with the side at high-profile commitments such as the ODI World Cup in India in October-November this year and the Test tour of Australia later in the winter. The duration of such a contract is one of the points still being worked out but both sides believe Pakistan’s schedule is such that it allows for such an arrangement to work. One of the more interesting appointments under Arthur is likely to be that of Rehan Ul-Haq, the general manager at the PSL franchise Islamabad United and a prominent broadcast analyst. He is expected to be, on paper, the team manager but with a brief much broader than the more traditional administrative role of managers. The role might be more akin to a chief of staff for Arthur, driving the team environment – Rehan is also one of the men credited with creating the data-driven approach at Islamabad United, two-time winners of the PSL.Mickey Arthur with the 2017 Champions Trophy•Getty Images

Arthur was head coach of the Pakistan side between 2016 and 2019, a generally successful white-ball period that included a Champions Trophy triumph in 2017 and the transformation of their limited-overs sides. Having languished behind other Full Members after a poor showing at the 2016 T20 World Cup, Arthur helped transform a T20 side under the leadership of Sarfaraz Ahmed and took them to the number one spot in the ICC rankings. There were notable Test results as well, though the red-ball side proved harder to transform. One big, early defeat at the 2019 World Cup meant Pakistan failed narrowly to reach the last four of the event, and Arthur was replaced by Misbah-ul-Haq soon after.More significantly, Arthur’s return will reunite him with a number of players in whose development he played a key early role in that first stint, not least the captain Babar Azam. Arthur persisted with Babar during a tough initiation into Test cricket and oversaw his white-ball rise. Others such as Sarfaraz, Hasan Ali, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Fakhar Zaman and Shadab Khan have also spoken in the past of the impact Arthur has had on their careers. Arthur had a stint with Sri Lanka after the Pakistan job and has since been with Derbyshire.

Liverpool make approach for "versatile" £50m ace who's Man City's top target

Liverpool are well down the line in their hunt for the Premier League title and could look to back up their impressive season by producing an exciting summer transfer window.

Liverpool's competitiveness on all fronts set to entice new arrivals

Liverpool managed to ride the storm against Paris Saint-Germain and performed a smash and grab late on to ensure they took a 1-0 lead over the Ligue 1 champions back to Anfield for the second-leg of their Champions League Round of 16 affair.

Harvey Elliott popped up late on to spark jubilant scenes in the away end – Arne Slot’s side showed a different side to their game in the French capital, which has bred optimism that they could go on to claim a sixth crown in Europe’s premier competition.

With the Premier League and Carabao Cup firmly in sight, the Reds are one of the most attractive destinations worldwide for potential new arrivals come the summer. Despite their immediate priority being silverware, plenty of work is going on behind the scenes as the Merseyside giants aim to build on their recent success.

Bournemouth star Milos Kerkez has recently emerged as a Liverpool target following his brilliant form on the south coast this season. If circumstances align, Kostas Tsimikas could depart to make way for the Hungary international.

Furthermore, contact has been made with Alexander Isak’s representatives over a move to Anfield. Darwin Nunez has cut an unconvincing figure through the middle, heightening the need for attacking reinforcements.

Speculation surrounding incomings at Liverpool is starting to escalate as the season reaches its business end, and the Reds have now made contact over an energetic figure who could add extra steel in the engine room.

Liverpool make contact over Atalanta midfielder Ederson

According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool have registered their interest in Atalanta midfielder Ederson, making contact to find out his situation with the Europa League holders. The outlet state that the Brazil international remains a long-term priority target for Manchester City and specify that a fee in the region of £50 million may be enough to secure his signature this summer.

Manchester United may also enter the race to replenish their ageing midfield. Labelled “versatile” by Tim Vickery, Liverpool have previously scouted Ederson, who has registered four goals and two assists in 39 appearances this season for Atalanta.

Famed for his tenacity, the 25-year-old has won 132 duels and made 142 recoveries in Serie A across 2024/25. On the creativity front, he has also fashioned 23 chances alongside recording a pass accuracy rate of 87.8%.

Liverpool wants to establish themselves as the dominant force in English football for years to come, so it makes sense to try to pip their rivals where possible to ensure quality reinforcements arrive at Anfield ahead of next season.

South Australia’s push for an unlikely winning run-chase turned into a game of survival with the Redbacks ultimately hanging for a draw in their final-round Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales in Adelaide.Set a challenging 386 from 87 overs for victory at Karen Rolton Oval, South Australia ended at 290 for 7. The Redbacks were in the contest at five wickets down, and with 144 required from the final 20 overs, but the dismissal of captain Jake Lehmann forced the home side to bat for a draw. The result means South Australia finished ahead of Tasmania in fourth on the Shield standings but means New South Wales have gone through the season winless for the first time since the competition became a home and away 10-game season in 1982-83.Daniel Drew scored 84 at No.3, completing an excellent match having made 85 in the first innings, as South Australia built slowly after a relatively cautious start.Lehmann kept the run rate high, scoring 74 from 83 balls, following on from his first innings century, while Liam Scott made 40 only to be undone by a stunning catch at square leg by Blake MacDonald off Ben Dwarshuis. Scott smoked a pull shot only for MacDonald to pluck it one-handed diving full length to his right.Lehmann was adjudged lbw off Chris Green, before Harry Nielsen and Nathan McAndrew ensured the home side secured a draw.Earlier, New South Wales batted for seven overs during the morning, before declaring at 247 for 3. Young opener Ryan Hackney was the only wicket to fall but not before he completed his maiden first-class century. He slept overnight on 98 not out but found the extra two runs for his first Sheffield Shield century before falling for 102.

Worth £78m more than Kimmich: Arsenal struck gold on "world-class" star

The transfer window might have slammed shut earlier this month, but that hasn’t stopped players being touted for a move to Arsenal.

The latest ace being linked with a potential move to the Gunners is Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich.

The German international’s £311k-per-week contract expires in the summer, representing an incredible market opportunity for the North Londoners.

That said, Mikel Arteta has already signed someone who’d provide plenty of competition for Kimmich and is currently worth significantly more money than him.

Why Kimmich would be an excellent signing for Arsenal

So, aside from the excitement that would come with bringing such a big name to the Emirates, why would signing Kimmich be a brilliant move for Arsenal?

Bayern Munich's JoshuaKimmichreacts in front of referee Tobias Reichel

Well, the first reason is that the Rottweil-born superstar has bags and bags of experience.

In all, he’s made 426 appearances for Bayern Munich, in which he’s scored 43 goals, provided 114 assists and won everything there is to win in the club game, like eight Bundesliga titles, three DFB Pokals, the Champions League and more.

On top of that, the “world-class” talent, as dubbed by former manager Julian Nagelsmann, has won 97 caps for the German national team and helped them win the Confederations Cup.

The second reason Arteta and Co should bring him to North London is that he’s positionally versatile but is exceptionally proficient in two positions: right-back and defensive midfield.

For example, he’s made 129 appearances in the former and 271 in the latter across his career, meaning he could help solve a lot of problems.

Impressively, despite being 30 and his contract expiring in the summer, Football Transfers rate Kimmich so highly that they still value him at up to €38m, which is about £31m – although one of Arteta’s star players is worth even more than that.

The Arsenal star worth millions more than Kimmich

Fortunately, Arsenal have come quite a long way under Arteta and have more than a handful of players worth more than Kimmich.

However, in this case, we are talking about an Arteta signing who could directly compete with the German: Declan Rice.

The Englishman joined the Gunners in the summer of 2023 for £105m, which remains the record transfer fee paid by the club to this day.

Impressively, his valuation has risen even beyond that monumental sum in the years since, with Football Transfers now pricing him at up to €132m, which comes out to around £109m, or £78m more than the Bayern ace is worth.

That is certainly a lot of money for a non-forward, but since he moved to North London, it would be hard to argue that he’s not more than lived up to his price tag.

For example, the former West Ham United captain, who has also been described as “world-class”, this time by journalist Tom Marshall-Bailey, has made 87 appearances for the Gunners, in which he’s scored ten goals and provided 17 assists.

That means the 26-year-old titan has averaged a goal involvement every 3.22 games, despite primarily playing as a left-eight or six.

Moreover, he’s not just been lucky with his attacking output either, as FBref places him in the top 5% of midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League for progressive carries, the top 7% for assists and the top 10% for expected assisted goals, all per 90.

Ultimately, Rice may have cost the club an arm and a leg in 2023, but he has since more than proven his worth, and while he wouldn’t cost nearly as much – or anything at all – Kimmich could prove to be just as game-changing an addition for Arsenal.

Forget Marmoush: Man City's "future superstar" could be the next Alvarez

Manchester City may be at the end of a trophy-laden era, but it is clear that Pep Guardiola is looking ahead to the future in a bid to make sure this season is a one-off.

The Spaniard spent around £190m during the winter transfer window on strengthening his first-team squad, adding some much-needed freshness.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola andMatheusNunesreact

Omar Marmoush, Vitor Reis, Abdukodir Khusanov and Nico Gonzalez all arrived at the Etihad, with three of the four players aged 23 or younger, as Guardiola has scoured the market for the very best young talent.

Marmoush is the outlier in this regard, but the club required another player who was capable of rivalling Erling Haaland and providing some extra potency to a Man City side who have won just 14 of their 29 Premier League matches so far this campaign.

Early signs are certainly promising, with the Egyptian star settling into life in Manchester easily, replicating his stunning form during the first half of the season for Eintracht Frankfurt which saw him net 20 goals in 25 games.

Omar Marmoush’s start at Manchester City

Haaland’s first two seasons at the club saw him score 90 goals across just 98 matches, winning two Premier League titles and the Champions League in the process.

Marmoush

A return of 29 goals this season is certainly respectable indeed, yet he did go through a spell of scoring only three goals in 13 league matches between the end of September and the start of 2025.

This coincided with City struggling in the top flight, losing six matches and falling behind in the race for the title.

Signing Marmoush has given the side a major boost, with his positional flexibility giving Guardiola some options.

Indeed, across seven league matches, Marmoush has played in four positions, scoring four goals during this time.

After selling Julian Alvarez last summer to Atlético Madrid, City were poor in the first half of the season, relying on Haaland far too much.

The signing of the former Frankfurt star has taken the pressure off the Norwegian sensation and this partnership could shine throughout the 2025/26 season.

Losing Alvarez, however, has proven to be a massive mistake by Guardiola.

Why Julian Alvarez left Manchester City

Despite his incredible talent, Alvarez was often fighting it out with Haaland for a place in the starting XI. During the 2022/23 season, only 23 of his 49 appearances came from the start, finding the back of the net 17 times.

The 2023/24 season was much better, with a tally of 19 goals and 13 assists coming from 53 games as City retained the Premier League title.

He was an excellent option for Guardiola to call upon, but rumours surfaced last summer regarding his future at the club, with the City boss revealing that the player had asked to leave in search of “a new challenge”.

Having signed the 2022 World Cup winner for just £14m in January 2022, City sold the forward to Atlético Madrid for a fee in the region of £81.5m, representing a club-record sale.

The deal was certainly profitable, but if Haaland suffered a long-term injury, the manager wouldn’t have a recognised centre-forward in the squad ready to deputise.

While City limped through the opening six months of the season, Alvarez has been enjoying life in Madrid, registering 28 goal contributions – 23 goals and five assists – so far across all competitions.

Could the manager already be brewing his next Alvarez at City?

Man City could already have their next Alvarez

Like the move to bring Alvarez to England, Guardiola paid River Plate a fee of around £12.5m to secure the services of the extremely talented teenager, Claudio Echeverri, in January 2024.

He would remain at his club until January this year when he finally moved to England, and he could follow in the footsteps of Alvarez, perhaps turning out even better than the 25-year-old.

Throughout the 2023/24 campaign, Echeverri played 41 matches for River Plate, scoring four goals and recording six assists in the process, coming close to leading his side to the final of the Copa Libertadores in November last year.

His best displays came during the U20 CONMEBOL Championship, which took place in January and February this year.

The midfielder started seven of his nine games for Argentina, scoring six goals, grabbing three assists and creating two big chances for his nation as they reached the final of the competition.

The 19-year-old also succeeded with 1.6 dribbles per game, recovered 1.8 balls per match and scored every 98 minutes, showcasing his talent during the tournament.

While Argentina may not have won, Guardiola will have been keeping a close watch on the teenager throughout the competition, and he will surely make his bow for City sooner rather than later.

Analyst Ben Mattinson profiled the midfielder upon his signing for Man City at the start of 2024 saying:

Remaining in his homeland for another year has only aided his development, as it was unlikely the teenager would get into the City midfield towards the end of last season.

Having starred at the South American Youth Championship last month, it might finally be time for Guardiola to start bleeding Echeverri over the coming months.

With the Club World Championships taking place this summer, might this be an ideal time to give the 19-year-old some game time? Especially with the tournament ranking low in terms of importance for City.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

He could be the future of the club, no doubt about that, and Guardiola could soon forget all about Alvarez once the former River Plate sensation gets going at the Etihad. That’s a certainty.

1 – 19/4/2018 – Cobrador: Guilherme (Athletico) – Goleiro: Sidão – Gol sofrido
