The race for promotion in the Championship is heating up. Leeds United currently hold the advantage and are one point clear of second place Sheffield United, with 59 points to the Blades’ 58. However, Daniel Farke’s side have a game in hand, which could be crucial as they look to extend their lead.
However, the Whites are yet to do any business in the transfer market, and with just days remaining of the January window, they are cutting it fine. Football League World’s Leeds pundit Kris Smith explained that it is a “real concern” they have not done any business yet.
However, that could all be about to change in the final days of the window, with Leeds linked to striker Cameron Archer.
Archer’s potential move to Leeds
The former Aston Villa and Sheffield United striker Archer was first linked with a move to Elland Road by Nizaar Kinsella, a journalist for BBC Sport.
Kinsella explained that the move is a possibility, with ‘early talks having taken place’ for the centre forward. It is thought he would be willing to make the move to the Championship side.
If there is one thing that Archer could add to this Leeds side, it is experience in the second tier of England. He has already experienced the Championship with two different sides, Preston North End and Middlesbrough, where he scored 18 goals and grabbed seven assists in 40 games.
However, the former England under-21 international has also shown he can do it in the Premier League. This season, despite being part of a struggling Southampton side, he has managed to score twice, with one of those goals coming against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
There has not been a clarification of the price should Leeds attempt to bring Archer in on a permanent deal. However, he joined the Saints for £15m in the summer, and they surely want to recoup that money, if not make a profit.

Interestingly, the Whites have an attacker who is worth way more than their winter transfer target.

The player in question here is Italian international Wilfried Gnonto. The 21-year-old has impressed again under Farke this term, playing a crucial part in Leeds’ title challenge for a second consecutive season.
This season, the attacker, who hails from Verbania in northwest Italy, has scored four times and registered five assists in the Championship.
He began the season on fire, with eight goal involvements in 16 games. That included a goal and assist against Coventry City in a 3-0 win at Elland Road.
However, that does mean that, in his next 11 games, the youngster has only managed to find the back of the net once. With that being said, he has not been a regular starter in recent weeks, and at only 21 years of age, is still putting up some impressive numbers.
When looking at Gnonto’s stats, courtesy of FBref, from the 2024/25 Championship season it is clear to see that he is a talented player. For example, on average, he creates 1.94 chances per game and completes 1.83 take-ons per game. Football statistician Statman Dave described him as “electric” for a reason.

With all that considered, it might not be a surprise that the young winger is valued as highly as £30m by CIES Football Observatory. That is double the fee that Archer cost Southampton in the summer, and perhaps double what he could cost the Whites.
This has been a brilliant investment from the Yorkshire side, who originally paid £3.8m for the youngster, back when Jesse Marsch was the manager at Elland Road. To see his value not only rise by almost ten times but also to see him worth so much more than their current transfer targets, is impressive.
Whether or not they bring Archer in, Leeds will always have Gnonto who is worth so much to the club, both financially and as a player.

Mohammad Wasim will miss the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 after picking a side strain. He is being released from the squad, that’s currently in the UAE, and will be out for at least three weeks. Hasan Ali, who was one of the notable omissions when the squad was announced, has been brought in as Wasim’s replacement.Wasim had complained of back pain while bowling in a net session at the ICC Academy in Dubai on Thursday, and was taken for an MRI scan shortly afterwards. In the PCB’s update on Friday, it has emerged that he had suffered a side strain. He has also been reviewed by a specialist. The team’s main physiotherapist, Cliffe Deacon, is working with Shaheen Shah Afridi, who has been ruled out of the Asia Cup because of a knee injury but is travelling with the team.Hasan was dropped from Pakistan’s squad for the ODI series in the Netherlands as well as for the Asia Cup following a poor run of form with the ball. Hasan’s form across formats in the last year has been middling at best. He has picked up eight wickets in eight T20Is in this period. In the three ODIs he has played in the last 12 months – all at home between March and June this year – he averaged 76.50 with the ball, picking up two wickets. Whilst the Irishman has plenty of potential as a box-dominant striker, Gyokeres offers an instant solution, whereas the Brighton ace remains a slightly unknown quantity due to his injury problems over the past few seasons.

Portugal head coach, Roberto Martinez, has labelled Gyokeres “one of the best signings in Europe” signings in Europe, joining Sporting from Coventry in 2023 for around £20m. The Sweden international has gone on to score 77 goals in 83 appearances, providing 22 assists.
Thus, Chelsea would be getting an elite finisher in the Sweden international, someone who has a track record of scoring at an incredibly high rate, which could be the difference between the Blues getting three points in some games, instead of one. In fairness, Spurs were drained of colour and inspiration as Liverpool picked them apart in the Carabao Cup semi-final on Thursday, but Arne Slot’s side are probably the best team in the world right now, steamrolling through the season.
Naturally, Tottenham didn’t reach the end of the match without another cruel injury blow.

Ever since Postecoglou arrived, Tottenham have wanted to attack. This has been both a blessing and a curse. Son Heung-min is one of the finest forwards of his generation, but aged 32, he has struggled to match the desired intensity this term and has floundered with the cogs crashing around him.
It doesn’t help that his teammates keep getting picked off, with Richarlison unable to complete the Merseyside clash after pulling up with an issue as he was withdrawn before the break.
Postecoglou resignedly said that it was “another one to add to the list” after the fixture, with Richarlison set to return to the medical room only a month after returning from a hamstring problem that had ruled him out for two months.
Mathys Tel arrived on loan last week to add relief, but Spurs need Dominic Solanke to return from the infirmary if their attacking fluency is to be restored.

Last month, Tottenham’s injury crisis deepened when Solanke pulled up with a knee injury that will take six weeks to recover from. He’s unlikely to return before the end of February.

Solanke is Tottenham’s club-record signing, brought in from Bournemouth last summer in a deal rising to £65m. Richarlison was the previous number one.
The belated Harry Kane replacement, 27, has posted 11 goals and 6 assists across 29 matches in all competitions this season. This is a decent return, built on the excellent campaign that convinced Daniel Levy to pay the big bucks, with Solanke notching 19 top-flight goals for the Cherries last year.
Solanke isn’t the most relentless of goalscorers, only averaging 2.59 shots per Premier League match this season, as per FBref, which puts him in the bottom 45% of strikers in the division.
He suffered from similar defects in his early days at the Vitality Stadium, with former teammate Junior Stanislas highlighting the many other areas that make him a top forward: “His quality was evident in training. His hold-up play, skills and willingness to run in behind – he was someone you always wanted on your team. He brought so much more than goals.”

Spurs held off from signing a direct Kane successor last season, but Solanke is now proven as a well-thought-out option, bringing his own take on the No 9 role and not expected to bring the obscene strike record of his predecessor.
Moreover, five of his seven Premier League goals this season have come against teams in the top half of the table, with the other two bagged against Brentford and Manchester United (he also put two past the Red Devils as Spurs advanced to the Carabao Cup semis).
He’s a big-game player and a facilitator for teammates such as Son to find more space in the danger areas and wreak the kind of havoc that Postecoglou’s system, at full throttle, provides.
Described as a “pressing monster”, the England international will be a major player over the coming years and will be one of the biggest driving forces as Spurs push to escape from the rut that they are currently bogged in.
Before long, Spurs’ new striker might be worth more than the legendary Kane, whose £54m release clause at Bayern Munich becomes active during the 2026 January transfer window.
Kane, who turns 32 this summer, has scored 72 goals from 73 matches since joining Bayern from Tottenham in 2023, adding 28 assists. The Three Lions captain’s teammate, Jamal Musiala, has described him as “an incredible player, one of the best in the world”.
Certain fans might be tempted to voice hopes of Kane re-joining next summer when his release clause becomes active, but in Solanke, Tottenham have a most industrious and energetic option.
Simply, £54m would be too heavy a price for a player whose 33rd year would be encroaching. Tottenham have endured plenty of misery in the transfer market over the past few years, but in Solanke, they have a striker capable of offering a multi-faceted approach over the coming years.
