Cheteshwar Pujara counters for India after Shardul Thakur's 7 for 61 limits South Africa lead

Stumps Shardul Thakur’s seven-wicket haul couldn’t stop South Africa from taking a 27-run first-innings lead but India started their second innings positively and were 85 for 2 – ahead by 58 – at stumps on day two of the second Test in Johannesburg. With Mohammed Siraj not looking 100% fit, Thakur stepped up with the ball and finished with 7 for 61, the best bowling figures for India against South Africa. However, a 38-run stand for the eighth wicket between Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj took South Africa past India’s total. Both Jansen and Maharaj took the attacking route, hitting three boundaries each in their respective 21s. Jasprit Bumrah, for a change, failed to nail his yorkers and even ended up bowling a beamer to Jansen but eventually pegged Maharaj’s off stump back to end the partnership. Two balls later, Bumrah hit Duanne Olivier on his left arm as the batter took his eyes off against a raring delivery. Jansen then tried to keep the strike to himself and even struck two fours in Bumrah’s next over, but Thakur dismissed him and Lungi Ngidi in the space of four balls to wrap the innings up.In response, India lost KL Rahul early, with the opener edging Jansen to second slip where Aiden Markram took a low catch. The on-field umpires referred it upstairs with the soft signal out; the third umpire didn’t find any conclusive evidence to overrule that decision.Mayank Agarwal was looking fluent, having hit five fours in his 23, but an error in judgement resulted in his wicket. He didn’t offer a shot to an Olivier delivery that nipped back off the surface to trap him lbw.Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane, though, ensured India didn’t lose another wicket. Pujara finished the day on 35 off 42 balls with the help of seven fours, two of which came in the final over of the day, while Rahane was batting on 11.Earlier in the day, Keegan Petersen and Dean Elgar kept India at bay despite a probing first hour of bowling. Bumrah and Mohammed Shami tested the duo – Bumrah with a bit of wobble in the air and Shami with the movement off the seam – but neither was successful in providing a breakthrough.Bumrah got one to come back in to Petersen after a string of awayswingers. The batter shouldered arms and, luckily for him, the ball went over the stumps.Keegan Petersen hit his maiden fifty, but India came back strongly•AFP/Getty Images

A few overs later, Elgar edged one off Bumrah and Pant took it low, which the on-field umpires referred upstairs with the soft signal as out. The third umpire concluded that it was a bump ball. In the next over, Shami cut Petersen in half but on this occasion, too, the ball sailed over the wicket.Rahul then turned to Siraj. The seamer had left the field after hurting his hamstring in the penultimate over of the first day but on Tuesday, he was on the field right from the start. He started with a shorter run-up and was down in pace as well. Petersen took advantage of that, hitting two boundaries in his first over of the day.Elgar, meanwhile, was stuck on his overnight score of 11. It took him 32 balls to score his first runs of the morning – at one point, he had faced 47 dots in a row. He broke that sequence with a flicked boundary off R Ashwin. It was Thakur who brought India back in the game, by picking up three quick wickets. Elgar and Petersen had added 74 in 35 overs when he had Elgar caught behind for 28. Petersen reached his maiden half-century with a boundary off Shami and celebrated it with two more fours in the over, but a rare loose shot outside off against Thakur cost him his wicket. And then, in the last over before lunch, Thakur found Rassie van der Dussen’s inside edge, which hit his thigh and lobbed behind the stumps. The batter walked back, but replays showed that the ball had perhaps bounced just in front of the diving Rishabh Pant. That meant South Africa slipped from 88 for 1 to 102 for 4.Temba Bavuma and Kyle Verreynne revived the innings after lunch. They added 60 for the fifth wicket in what was South Africa’s third 50-plus stand of the series. But just like the last two times, it was Thakur who broke it, trapping Verreynne lbw with the one that came back in sharply. In his next over, Thakur had Bavuma caught down the leg side for 51 to complete his maiden five-for in Test cricket. Bavuma, who reached his half-century off just 59 balls, hit six fours and a six during his knock, the most eye-catching being an on-drive against Bumrah. From the other end, Shami got Kagiso Rabada mistiming a drive to mid-on. At 179 for 7, it looked like India could even take a lead but South Africa’s lower order didn’t let that happen.

Hazlewood ruled out of second Test with side strain

Jhye Richardson is the frontrunner to come into Australia’s XI in Adelaide

Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out of the second Ashes Test in Adelaide due to the side strain he picked up in Brisbane with Jhye Richardson, the Western Australia quick, favourite to replace him.Hazlewood bowled on the fourth day at the Gabba, having been held back for a large part of the innings, after scans had shown a “very minor” strain but it was always unlikely he would be risked for the day-night Test.He returned to Sydney on Sunday rather than head to Adelaide with the focus now on being ready for the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. Like all the Australian attack he came into the Ashes without any long-form match practice.Hazlewood has taken 32 wickets at 19.90 in seven day-night Tests. The series now includes a second match under lights following the relocation of the Perth fixture to Hobart.Richardson is the frontrunner to come into the pace attack having enjoyed an impressive Sheffield Shield season where he has claimed 23 wickets at 13.43.He played his previous two Tests against Sri Lanka in 2019, his debut coming in a day-night match at the Gabba where he claimed match figures of 5 for 45.However, the uncapped Michael Neser produced a timely reminder of his credentials by taking seven wickets against England Lions including 5 for 29 in the first innings.Australia have not made any additions to the squad for the second Test. David Warner did not field during England’s second innings in Brisbane or bat in the small chase after a blow to the ribs against Ben Stokes but is expected to be fit. Usman Khawaja is the spare batter.

O jogo
PRIMEIRO TEMPO
CRB ASSUSTA NO COMEÇO

Rodrigo Rodrigues dominou a bola e chutou girando. A bola passou raspando a trave e quase entrou.

DEFESA DO CSA ERRA, CRB APROVEITA E ABRE O PLACAR

Spurs join race to sign £30,000-p/w Marmoush teammate Kulusevski knows well

Tottenham have now joined a pair of other Premier League clubs in the race to sign a new midfielder for manager Ange Postecoglou, according to a fresh report.

Spurs slump to shock Premier League defeat

Tottenham’s ability to shoot themselves in the foot was demonstrated once more on Sunday as they fell to a shock 2-1 loss to Ipswich Town in front of 60,000 of their own fans. The Lilywhites had defeated Manchester City in the Carabao Cup 10 days ago and thrashed Aston Villa 4-1, but followed it up with defeat against Galatasaray in the Europa League and a shock loss at Ipswich Town, who had not won a game all season until Sunday.

Goals from Sammie Szmodics and Liam Delap proved too much for Ange Postecoglou’s side, for whom Rodrigo Bentancur grabbed a consolation.

It means that Spurs head into the international break 10th in the Premier League, three points outside the top six and just a point above Manchester United, who have endured a terrible start of their own. After the game, Postecoglou was keen to take the blame for the result himself, explaining: “It’s just down to me. I’m not getting consistent performances from the players.

“It’s something I need to address. I’m the person in charge so that’s usually the way it goes. I take responsibility when their performances don’t meet the levels that they should.”

But the game was the 13th time Spurs have fallen a goal down in 15 home Premier League matches in 2024, a trend that will prevent any serious silverware aspirations, and it is clear that change is needed after the international break.

Tottenham join race to sign midfielder

That comes as Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg has reported that Tottenham are one of several sides who have Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Hugo Larsson “on their radar” as they look to bolster their midfield options. As it stands, James Maddison has been in and out of the starting XI as Postecoglou looks to find a balance in the middle of the pitch, while Dejan Kulusevski has been the only impressive option in midfield.

Reinforcements are needed, and Larsson would certainly fit the bill, with the 20-year-old having impressed in the Bundesliga alongside rising superstar Omar Marmoush, who has been linked with just about every club in the English top flight. Fabrizio Romano dubbed Larsson an “exciting” talent, and he has gone on to grab three goals and an assist so far this season.

He is a player that Kulusevski knows well too, with the pair having been on international duty off and on together with Sweden since Larsson made his debut in 2021, though they have only shared a pitch on five occasions.

However, there is a major hitch with any potential deal, with Larsson having penned a new five year contract earlier this season, which nets him £30,000 per week. That contract does not contain a release clause, which would make any deal a costly undertaking, something that is likely to give all of Tottenham, Arsenal and Liverpool pause for thought.

It is added that Frankfurt want to keep him for at least another year, with Marmoush already looking likely to leave in the summer, a move which could rule out an exit for Larsson barring a eye-watering offer.

Chelsea could soon unleash their incredible Cobham star over Reece James

Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea continue to soar in the Premier League, beating Leicester City 2-1 this weekend, and remaining in third place after 12 games played.

One factor that has been a heavy cause for discussion is Chelsea’s squad building in recent years, whether it was good to build a strong squad with depth, or if it was going overboard.

This Christmas period is bound to tell us a lot, with games coming thick and fast, injuries, players needing rest, and tactical decisions for many different types of games.

But right-back could be the first issue Maresca has to solve, as both his senior options missed out against Leicester, leaving Wesley Fofana to cover in that position.

Chelsea's right-back situation

Reece James has been ruled out with another hamstring injury and will undergo a scan to check the severity of his latest setback. Malo Gusto, on the other hand, missed the game against Leicester due to illness, but this shows how quickly things can change in the right-back department, with both senior full-backs missing.

Chelsea’s captain has been absent for 50 games since the start of the 2023/24 campaign, missing 38 games last season with multiple hamstring injuries (undergoing surgery for this too), and has now suffered his second hamstring injury of 24/25.

The metrics above tell us the role of a Maresca full-back, often having to contribute to all phases of play, defend 1v1s in their channel, but also often invert into midfield, help with progressive duties in the build-up, and even supply the team with creativity in the final third.

Gusto has been an extremely important part of Maresca’s system this season, playing a variety of positions, inverting into deep midfield and advanced midfield positions (sometimes as a number ten), allowing Maresca to platform his best players such as Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez in their best positions.

Malo Gusto in action for Chelsea

In the absence of James and Gusto, Fofana filled in at right-back for the Blues, putting in a strong performance and becoming that wide centre-back in possession.

This is something we have also seen from Axel Disasi this season, but Chelsea does have a special talent for this role in the academy too.

Reece James injury history: Every game missed by Chelsea star since 2021/22

The defender has endured a torrid few seasons at Stamford Bridge.

ByBen Browning Nov 22, 2024 Chelsea's academy solution

18-year-old, Josh Acheampong, is a right-back/right-sided centre-back who has come through the Cobham ranks, making his senior debut last season, and already making one appearance this campaign for the senior side in the EFL Cup.

However, recently the young defender was frozen out from both the U21 and senior squad, whilst Chelsea tried to come to a new contract agreement with Acheampong.

Many top clubs are said to be monitoring the 18-year-old, believing they can offer him a better pathway into regular first-team football, which could be of interest to the young talent. Acheampong has been described as “brave” by Maresca, who has mentioned the youngster on a number of occasions this season, as a player he likes.

However, with Acheampong now in a deadlock with the Chelsea board, being frozen out and awaiting a contract decision, sadly Maresca doesn’t have the choice to use him as a right-back solution, despite the fact he would be an ideal replacement for both James and Gusto. This simply has to change.

Virat Kohli steps down as India Test captain

“Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test captain of India, it’s now”

Virat Kohli has stepped down as captain of India’s Test team, with immediate effect, a day after losing the Test series to South Africa 2-1 with a seven-wicket loss in Cape Town.He took over as full-time Test captain in early 2015, when MS Dhoni had announced retirement in Australia, and ended up as India’s most successful Test captain ever.Related

Kohli’s sudden announcement on Twitter comes on the back of a series of public exchanges between him and the BCCI, which started with his T20I resignation before the 2021 World Cup. In early December, the BCCI then stripped Kohli of the ODI captaincy, naming Rohit Sharma the new white-ball leader. A day later, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly said that he had asked Kohli not to step down as T20I captain, but Kohli soon contradicted Ganguly, saying his decision to step down was “received well”, termed as “progressive” by the BCCI top brass, and that he “wasn’t told to reconsider” his decision. Kohli also expressed his disappointment in the same press conference, saying he had been told about his removal as ODI captain just 90 minutes before the selection meeting to pick the Test squad for South Africa, and “there was no prior communication to me at all”.Most wins as Test captain: Virat Kohli tops the list for India•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The controversy stretched further when chief selector Chetan Sharma – while announcing the ODI squad for the South Africa tour on December 31 – said “everyone who was present in the meeting” asked Kohli to reconsider his decision when he stepped down as T20I captain. In his tweet, Kohli said: “It’s been 7 years of hard work, toil and relentless perseverance everyday to take the team in the right direction. I’ve done the job with absolute honesty and left nothing out there. Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test captain of India, it’s now. I have always believed in giving my 120 per cent in everything I do, and if I can’t do that, I know it’s not the right thing to do. I have absolute clarity in my heart and I cannot be dishonest to my team.

“I want to thank the BCCI for giving me the opportunity to lead my country for such a long period of time and more importantly to all the team-mates who bought into the vision I had for the team from day one and never gave up in any situation. You guys have made this journey so memorable and beautiful. To Ravi [Shastri] and the support group who were the engine behind this vehicle that moved us upwards in Test cricket consistently, you all have played a massive role in bringing this vision to life. Lastly, a big thank you to MS Dhoni who believed in me as a captain and found me to be an able individual who could take Indian cricket forward.”The BCCI, which tweeted a statement congratulating Kohli for his “admirable leadership qualities”, has not indicated when it will name his replacement. Rohit had been appointed full-time vice-captain ahead of the South Africa Tests, but a hamstring injury on the eve of the team’s departure meant he could not make the trip and the selectors then appointed KL Rahul as Kohli’s deputy. Rahul also stood in as captain in the second Test, in Johannesburg, after Kohli pulled out due to back spasms.Kohli’s stint as Test captain was largely successful, as he oversaw the team’s rise to No.1 in the ICC rankings and several memorable overseas victories. In 2021, he led India to the final of the inaugural World Test Championship in Southampton. Overall, he steps down with the fourth-most wins as captain in Test cricket, with 40 wins from 68 games. Of the other 28, 11 were draws and 17 were losses.Kohli as India captain across formats•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Going by numbers, he was India’s best captain by a distance. Dhoni (27 wins from 60 matches) and Ganguly (21 wins out of 49) are next on the list.Of his 40 wins, 16 came overseas, including series victories in Sri Lanka (2-1) in 2015, West Indies (2-0) in 2016, Sri Lanka (3-0) in 2017, Australia (2-1) in 2018-19 and West Indies (2-0) in 2019. Under Kohli, after the WTC final, India also led what was originally a five-match series in England 2-1, before the fifth Test was called off because of Covid-19 fears in the Indian contingent.Kohli is also lauded for his fitness-oriented approach to the game, and will be remembered for using the five-bowler strategy consistently in Test cricket.Kohli’s tenure will also be remembered for a number of controversies, including a fall-out with then coach Anil Kumble in 2017, crossing swords with Steven Smith over DRS protocols when Kohli stopped short of labelling the then Australia captain a cheat, the recent face-off with the BCCI, and even more recently India’s outburst against the host broadcaster during the Test series in South Africa.

On the batting front, Kohli’s recent lack of a hundred has been in the spotlight – he has not struck one since November 2019, when he made 136 against Bangladesh in Kolkata. He has scored 760 runs at an average of 28.14 since then, with six half-centuries. In the just-concluded Cape Town Test, his last as captain, he batted with exemplary discipline to score 79 off 273 balls and 29 off 193.India’s next Test assignment is a two-match series against Sri Lanka at home in February-March, when Kohli is expected to play his 100th Test. The BCCI and selectors are likely to announce his successor as captain at the time of the squad selection.
