Lei do ex!

WNCL: QueenslandAfter multiple delays and schedule changes, the domestic 50-over competition was played from late January to late March with each team having eight matches. The standout feature was the volume of centuries churned out, and often by those not in the Australia set-up. The backend of the tournament was played without the international names who were in New Zealand and Victoria, who qualified with ease, suffered especially hard. PCB to outsource management of bio-security protocols with PSL to resume on June 1

The season was curtailed last month after an outbreak of Covid-19 among a number of players

The PCB will outsource the management of its bio-security protocols to an international firm when the sixth season of the PSL resumes in June. The dates for the resumption have now been finalised, with the league restarting on June 1 and the final scheduled for June 20. Twenty matches remain, with all of them to be played in Karachi. The season was curtailed last month after an outbreak of Covid-19 among a number of players made its continuation untenable. That came after a number of incidents raised questions about the security and implementation of the protocols put in place for the tournament; those were protocols that were in turn devised and put in place by the board’s medical panel.Dr Sohail Saleem, the head of that panel, is being released after his resignation, which he had submitted in the wake of the curtailment, was accepted. An independent two-person fact-finding commission has since compiled a report and made a series of recommendations that the PCB’s board of governors discussed in detail in a meeting on Saturday.Related

Birmingham could land a dream Jutkiewicz successor who has "got it all"

Birmingham City haven't quite started their new League One season as the dominant force some might expect, with a mediocre 1-1 home draw against Reading secured on the opening day, followed up with a slender 3-2 win over Wycombe Wanderers on their travels.

Chris Davies' Blues did dominate the ball at 74% possession versus the Chairboys, and did muster up 13 shots to the home side's eight, but it was still an unnecessarily nervy victory come full-time.

The former Tottenham Hotspur assistant manager turned main man in the St. Andrews dug-out would have been pleased with Alfie May's efforts up top though, who has now scored in back-to-back clashes the league, after signing from Charlton Athletic in the summer.

Winning the third tier golden boot last campaign with the Addicks, his starting spot could be amazingly less concrete, if this statement purchase ends up joining.

Birmingham's search for a striker

As reported by Birmingham Live over the weekend, it is looking increasingly unlikely that Birmingham will be able to re-sign former loan star Jay Stansfield this summer, to boost their already impressive attacking arsenal.

Marco Silva has confirmed that Stansfield will get more chances to impress at Fulham instead, despite the fact there have been many approaches for his services from all across the EFL, including the Blues.

Birmingham will continue to try and tempt Fulham into allowing Stansfield to return back to St. Andrews, however, with the Mirror stating that the money-rich Blues haven't 'drawn a line under their interest.'

The electric 21-year-old was a breath of fresh air up top for the West Midlands side last campaign, even as a disastrous relegation was served up, and he could soon be another entertaining attacking option for Davies to rely on, over the likes of an ageing Lukas Jutkiewicz.

What Stansfield can offer Birmingham

Birmingham fans will be well aware of Stansfield's prowess in front of goal, with 13 strikes managed from 47 games last season leading the line, which included the strike above against a now Premier League Southampton outfit.

The Cottagers youngster is also used to dropping down to League One too, when it comes to finding the net on a regular basis, having tallied up nine goals and eight assists from 38 games playing for Exeter City in the third tier, the campaign before his breakout moment with the Blues.

As can be seen above, the 21-year-old has been a notorious goal machine across his youth and senior career to date, with one of his former Exeter teammates in Kevin McDonald even describing the Fulham number 28 as a striker who has "got it all".

Therefore, it isn't a shock to see Silva's men attempting to bed him into their Premier League set-up, hoping he can become a top homegrown talent in the men's team over time.

Jay Stansfield for Birmingham City.

Jutkiewicz will be nervously sweating about the prospect of Stansfield's return though, knowing he could be bumped down Davies' pecking order for the fresh talent to come back in.

The Blues stalwart is a legend in St. Andrew's quarters, having amassed a staggering 333 appearances for the West Midlands club now, but his minutes in the here and now would only further dry up if Stansfield was to rejoin.

The EFL veteran has averaged just 15 minutes of action from off the bench in league action to date, with only two duels won from eight versus Wycombe, as his powers start to visibly wane.

Birmingham will want to take the third tier by storm this season, and would only get into their groove even more, if the statement purchase of Stansfield was pulled off.

Birmingham make offer for £2.4k-p/w defender, they've already had a reply

It could be their most impressive signing of the summer.

Pakistan duo Mohammad Amir and Shoaib Malik have signed on with the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2021 set to take place later this year in St Kitts and Nevis. Malik returns to Guyana Amazon Warriors, the side he led in 2018 and 2019, while Amir’s first stint in the CPL sees will see him ply his trade with the Barbados Tridents. Nepal legspinner Sandeep Lamichhane will team up with defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders, having played for three separate teams in the last three seasons.Malik has captained the Amazon Warriors in every game he has represented the outfit, though Nicholas Pooran will take over the role this year. Chris Green captained the side in 2020, leading them to the semi-finals. Some of Malik’s best T20 form has come in the CPL, where he averages 43.60 with the bat and 15.66 with the ballRelated

CPL 2021 to be played entirely in St Kitts

Amir joins Kent for second half of Vitality T20 Blast

For Amir, the CPL is unchartered territory, but little surprise given his international retirement last year. Ever since, Amir has played in T20 leagues in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, England and Pakistan, with 161 of his 220 T20 wickets coming in domestic T20 tournaments around the world. The tournament is scheduled to begin on August 28, with the final on September 19. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all games will take place in St Kitts and Nevis. A televised players’ draft will be held on Friday. The CPL was the first of the major franchise T20 tournament to resume operations since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, playing the entire 2020 event in Trinidad split between two venues at Queen’s Park Oval and Brian Lara Academy Stadium. However, the event was played entirely in a bio-bubble without any fan attendance. Recent internationals hosted by Cricket West Indies in Antigua have also been played without fans. But the CPL is pressing forward by encouraging fans to return to Warner Park – which will operate at up to 50 per cent capacity – provided they can demonstrate proof of vaccination.

Arsenal must now unleash their "big-game player" over Merino & Partey

Arsenal have started the new Premier League season in perfect fashion. Two games, two wins, two goals scored in both outings and they are yet to concede.

The Gunners have evidently begun things as they ended in 2023/24. Bang in form. Their record on the road in particular throughout 2024 has been incredible. They are yet to lose any of their ten matches and have conceded just three times. Yeah, beating Mikel Arteta's bunch of freak athletes is a hard task.

That challenge for opposing teams could become even harder after the late arrival of box-crashing and serial duel-winner Mikel Merino.

The Spaniard arrived from Real Sociedad in a late move before Friday's transfer deadline but it's unlikely he'll be an instant starter.

Why Merino won't play against Brighton

It was confirmed by Arteta during his pre-match press conference that the midfielder had picked up an instant injury in his first full training session with the group.

Gabriel allegedly landed on the new signing and caused a shoulder issue that will rule now him out for a number of weeks.

In time, he will no doubt become the natural holding of the left-sided 8 role Arsenal have been seeking to strengthen after Granit Xhaka's departure a year ago.

Xhaka is no more, however, with Declan Rice beginning the opening two matches in that role. Behind him has been Thomas Partey, a Marmite character to supporters.

Thomas Partey's season so far

At the start of the 2023/24 term, the former Atletico Madrid star was given an interesting role. Partey didn't start in midfield but it was at right-back where he was entrusted.

What came over Arteta to operate in this manner is still a question we're still trying to answer. Anyway, that little experiment was abruptly ended when the Ghanaian picked up an injury, something that plagued his campaign.

Partey returned at the back end of the season to mixed reviews. Clearly leggy, clearly lacking much energy and consistently overrun, it didn't bode well for his future at the Emirates Stadium.

That said, he has survived the cull this summer, one that's seen the likes of Emile Smith Rowe, Fabio Vieira and Eddie Nketiah shown the exit door.

He has stood out in the opening two games, though, notably against Aston Villa last weekend where the midfielder scored a crucial goal to put the game out of sight for Unai Emery's team.

So, dropping him immediately would be quite harsh, yes? Probably. That said, Amadou Onana did have the beating of him when surging forward with precision.

Against quick and fleet-footed opposition the idea of Partey playing as the deepest midfielder is a scary one. That's the threat Brighton will pose to the Gunners on Saturday lunchtime.

New signing Matt O'Riley could play but it's the wide players who cut inside with relentless desire – chiefly Kaoru Mitoma and Simon Adingra – who could cause problems. You've also got the threat of Joao Pedro.

Arsenal found it difficult against Morgan Rogers who occupies similar pockets of space to Pedro last weekend. At one point the Englishman led a merry jig around Rice and Partey who couldn't deal with his exciting and fluid play style.

Completing five dribbles and winning eight duels, Arsenal cannot afford Pedro and Co the same luxury this weekend.

The best replacements for Partey

There are a few solutions if Arteta wishes to take Partey out of the firing line. Ethan Nwaneri, who shone so bright in pre-season, could be given the nod but it's too soon for the academy prospect.

That move would see Rice move back into his natural holding role. It's a position he'll likely play in once Merino is up to speed too. A clash with Brighton isn't the time to hand the Spaniard a debut either.

That leaves one man, Arsenal's "big-game player" as he was coined in 2023 by Daily Mirror journalist Darren Lewis. That is Jorginho.

The Italian is yet to play a single minute this season but he has been a vital player for the club, notably against teams who will press the Gunners and look to play against them.

Funnily enough, it was at Villa Park where we first saw that big-match mentality with the Euro 2020 winner popping up to find the back of the net via Emiliano Martinez in the dying embers.

Since then he has only gone from strength to strength in Arsenal colours. Handed the Player of the Match award against Newcastle back in February, the 32-year-old has been rolling back the years in 2024.

He was notably outstanding in a vital 2-1 win over Liverpool, again winning the Man of the Match gong. On that occasion, no player retained possession better, had more touches or made more passes.

You may well argue that Jorginho could struggle with the pace of Brighton's counter-attack too but he will offer his side more composure, a better ability to evade the press and the capability to retain possession. In short, he's ideal for the sort of game that could play out this weekend.

Looking at the numbers, it makes for interesting reading with Jorginho far better last season when it came to passing and maintaining possession but Partey was the more aggressive (only just) when it came to the defensive phases of play.
