SLC says Chaminda Vaas 'holding the game to ransom' after fast bowling coach's resignation

Board says former pacer made his “irresponsible move on the eve of the team’s departure, based on personal monetary gain”

Just days after being appointed as Sri Lanka’s fast bowling coach, Chaminda Vaas has resigned from the post with immediate effect, with SLC accusing the former fast bowler of holding “the game at ransom”. The move comes a day out from the national team’s departure for their tour of the West Indies, and has left SLC scrambling for a replacement.ESPNcricinfo understands that SLC will take a decision on Vaas’ replacement as a matter of urgency, with the selection likely to be from one of the coaches currently working at the high performance centre.Related

Angelo Mathews: 'All these years later, Vaas is still the benchmark'

According to an SLC media release, Vaas’ resignation had come about as a result of a dispute over remuneration, with SLC administrators also believed to be unhappy with the timing of his demands.”It is particularly disheartening to note that in an economic climate such as the one facing the entire globe right now, Mr. Vaas has made this sudden and irresponsible move on the eve of the team’s departure, based on personal monetary gain,” stated the release.”The Management of SLC, and indeed the entire nation, hold Mr. Vaas in high esteem as a cricketer who has excelled for his country. His years of yeoman service have been appreciated and rewarded over the years both in status and in kind.”In such circumstances, it is extremely disheartening that a legend such as Chaminda Vaas has resorted to holding the administration, the cricketers, and indeed the game at ransom, by handing in his resignation at the eleventh hour, citing the administration’s refusal to accede to an unjustifiable demand for an increased USD remuneration, in spite of being a contracted employee of Sri Lanka Cricket, already receiving remuneration that is in keeping with his experience, qualifications, and expertise, in addition to which he would have been entitled to the usual USD per diems offered to all members of a travelling squad.”Vaas has since tweeted that he had “made a humble request to SLC and they turned it down.” ESPNcricinfo learns that Vaas had requested his salary be in the region of what was being paid to the outgoing Saker. SLC has long had a payment structure wherein foreign coaches earn considerably more than their local counterparts, primarily due to the former being paid in foreign currency and the resultant favourable exchange rate with the Sri Lankan rupee. Vaas’ resignation is the latest in a string of disruptions ahead of the West Indies tour. Vaas himself had been a replacement for David Saker, who had resigned prior to the tour citing personal reasons. Meanwhile earlier today, it was revealed that fast bowler Lahiru Kumara had become the latest Sri Lankan player to test positive for Covid-19, while head coach Mickey Arthur has also been in quarantine in recent weeks after returning a positive test earlier this month. The team also has several first team players missing through injury.

Chelsea can forget Gallagher with pre-season star who won 10 duels vs City

Enzo Maresca and his Chelsea side have been touring the US this pre-season, already playing the likes of Wrexham, Celtic, Club America, and Manchester City, in a host of games that have thrown up different challenges for the Blues.

Of course, this is a positive for Maresca's side, being faced with as many different challenges teams can throw at them, and learning to adapt, whilst sticking to their new system implemented by the Italian manager, ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign.

Chelsea have spent the last few weeks implementing their new system, starting in a 4-3-3, and inverting one of the fullbacks to create a 3-2-4-1 shape in possession. This has seen Reece James and Malo Gusto taking up central areas alongside the Chelsea number six.

Conor Gallagher on his way out

With Cobham graduate Conor Gallagher going into the last year of his contract, Chelsea are currently in the process of figuring out his situation, which looks likely to conclude with the 24-year-old leaving the club this summer.

Despite Chelsea reportedly offering Gallagher a new deal, it is believed the midfielder has reportedly been told he would be considered a "squad player" next season, with the amount of midfield depth at the club, and other profiles suiting Maresca's style of football more.

Conor-Gallagher-Chelsea-Carabao-Cup-Final

Gallagher made 50 appearances for the Blues last campaign in all competitions, scoring seven goals, providing nine assists, and totalling 4,036 minutes, even captaining a large majority of the games due to the absence of Reece James and Ben Chilwell.

Gallagher's ideal replacement

The volume of midfielder depth already at the club would mean Chelsea do not have to go out and replace Gallagher in the transfer market, and one midfielder to be excited about after pre-season is 20-year-old Romeo Lavia.

Lavia spent all of last term out for Chelsea, having joined last summer for £58m, only managing one 32-minute cameo for the Blues, before re-aggravating his hamstring injury and missing the rest of the campaign.

The young midfielder – who came through Man City's academy – has lit up pre-season and despite Chelsea losing 4-2 on Saturday evening, the former Saints star put on a stellar display.

He flexed his out-of-possession qualities with a whopping eight tackles and four interceptions. But it isn't just his out-of-possession qualities that shine through, as his excellent passing range led to Chelsea's second goal, Lavia assisting Noni Madueke.

Lavia has been superb ahead of the forthcoming season, starting in that number six role in every game so far, and having either Reece James or Malo Gusto invert alongside him to create that midfield pivot.

That said, against City, during the first half we got our first glimpse of a different strategy, not inverting a fullback, and instead having one of the number eights (Caicedo) alongside Lavia in the pivot.

His mixture of athleticism to cover ground off the ball, press resistance and comfortability on the ball under pressure, and progressive passing make him a perfect midfield pivot player for Maresca, and you can already see the trust being instilled in the young midfielder.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shakib Al Hasan star as Zimbabwe collapse

The hosts lost 8 for 51 despite debutant Kaitano and captain Taylor giving them a strong start to their innings

Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shakib Al Hasan scythed through a hot-and-cold Zimbabwe line-up on the third afternoon, to put Bangladesh on top of the one-off Test in Harare. Miraz claimed his eighth five-for while Shakib picked four wickets as well. This was only the third time that spinners took nine wickets in an innings in Zimbabwe. The home side lost their last eight wickets for 51 runs after they were comfortably placed at 225 for 2 at one stage. While all this was happening, Takudzwanashe Kaitano top-scored with 87 off 311 balls, batting quite impressively at the other end. It is the highest score by a Zimbabwean opener on debut, and the third-highest number of balls faced by a Zimbabwean debutant overall. Brendan Taylor made 81 but his dismissal ultimately changed the home side’s outlook.Taskin, Muzarabani fined for face-off

The heated confrontation that took place between Bangladesh’s Taskin Ahmed and Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani on the second day of the Harare Test has resulted in both players being fined 15% of their match fees.

Match referee Andy Pycroft also slapped them with one demerit point each as further punishment for getting in each other’s faces and making physical contact as well, which goes against article 2.1.12 of the ICC code of conduct.

Both Taskin and Muzarabani accepted their sanctions.

The Bangladesh openers Shadman Islam and Saif were solid in the second innings, staying unbeaten on 22 and 20 respectively. They stretched Bangladesh’s lead to 237.Earlier, Zimbabwe’s innings was one of extremes. Their top three batters scored 209 runs, but there were also four ducks. The truly extreme aspect was in how they batted in the four sessions. On the second evening and third morning, they looked confident, particularly with captain Taylor in the middle. He made a quickfire 81 with 12 fours and a six, shepherding Kaitano in a 115-run second wicket stand. He smacked Shakib for a straight six to reach his fifty off 58 balls, and swung Ebadot Hossain away for a thrilling four through midwicket. But his aggression got the better of him against Miraz, who had him caught at square leg, playing a half-hearted sweep shot.Kaitano was understandably more cautious, scoring the bulk of his runs when the bowlers erred their line. He scored 59 runs on the leg side, hitting only three fours through the covers. He tried to keep things moving when batting with Dion Myers but the pair slowed down after the lunch break. It forced Myers to play a rash shot, the sweep once again, which got him caught at long leg. Timycen Maruma became the fourth batter out sweeping, lbw to Shakib for a 17-ball duck. Taskin Ahmed had Roy Kaia caught behind for a duck too, before Miraz took over the wicket-taking.He ended Kaitano’s long vigil with one that took his edge down the leg side, after which he cleaned up the tail in 19 balls. Donald Tiripano, Victor Nyauchi and Blessing Muzarabani fell in three successive overs, before Shakib took the last wicket, that of Richard Ngarava, caught at slip, also for a duck.

European giants make first enquiry about signing "superb" Tottenham player

After confirming the arrival of Dominic Solanke, Tottenham Hotspur could be about to lose one of Ange Postecoglou's defenders amid reported interest from Barcelona.

Tottenham transfer news

The Lilywhites finally have their replacement for Harry Kane in Solanke. The former Liverpool forward has arrived for a reported £65m in one of the most expensive deals of the summer, and should add what Ange Postecoglou's side were missing in the absence of an out-and-out No 9 last season.

Expressing his delight over the move, Solanke told Spurs' official website: "It means so much – to sign for a club like Tottenham is everything I’ve wanted, really. It’s a magnificent club, a huge club with ambitions that match mine, so I’m delighted to start and meet all the boys.

"What excites me most about the club is how ambitious it is. It has a great manager, great players and I feel like it suits my style of play as well, so I can’t wait to get started and do my stuff on the pitch."

ByEmilio Galantini Aug 10, 2024

However, as Solanke enters, a defender could be heading for the exit door. According to Sky Sports' Lyall Thomas, Barcelona have enquired about signing Sergio Reguilon this summer, with the defender into the final year of his contract at Spurs. The left-back spent last season on loan at Manchester United and Brentford, and is unlikely to start under Postecoglou, given his preference for Destiny Udogie in his role.

A player who came through the ranks at Real Madrid, a summer switch to Barcelona would certainly be a controversial one for Reguilon.

"Superb" Reguilon needs Spurs exit

Unlikely to start in the forthcoming campaign, Reguilon should set aside his Real Madrid past and jump at the chance to join Barcelona if the opportunity comes his way this summer. Following his loan spells last term, he found himself at a crossroads that didn't look very likely to end in such a move, but the La Liga giants may yet offer the left-back a way out of north London.

He did show glimpses of his class, with praise coming his way during both of his stints away last season – including following United's Champions League outing against Bayern Munich where he was labelled "excellent" and their "best player".

Manchester United's loan defender Sergio Reguilon.

At 27 years old, Reguilon may not have realised the potential that once saw his loan spell at Sevilla prior to his Spurs move described as "superb" by Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig, yet Barcelona's enquiry suggests that he still has plenty of fans at the top of La Liga.

With just one year left on his contract too, Spurs may have no choice but to lose their defender at a cut price this summer.

Todd Boehly's 13 worst signings at Chelsea (ranked)

Chelsea have become something of a laughing stock over the last few years, with their approach to transfers bordering on farce, having spent hundreds of millions of pounds and been through several managers in the short period since Todd Boehly’s consortium took over.

Their unrivalled extravagance in the transfer market has not been matched with success on the pitch, with the vast majority of the circa-£1bn spent in that time set to go down the proverbial drain. Put simply, there have been far more misses than hits.

Enzo Maresca – the third permanent manager to be appointed during the Boehly/Clearlake era – was allowed to continue a spending spree at Stamford Bridge. While most of his signings may not yet be able to claim to be among the worst arrivals in recent times, the odds are hardly in their favour given the current hierarchy’s poor success rate when it comes to buying players.

With that in mind, we have come up with a list of Chelsea’s worst post-Roman Abramovich deals so far. For this list, we’ve considered players’ performances, the fee they were bought for, and the amount of sense a deal made – whether from a financial or sporting point of view. Of course, this is all subject to change…

ByStephan Georgiou Sep 18, 2024 13 Robert Sanchez £25m from Brighton, 2023

After selling Edouard Mendy to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli, Chelsea were in need of a new No 1. Their decision to replace the Senegalese shot-stopper with Spaniard Sanchez was not necessarily a bad one given its necessity, but few could argue that it has worked out for the best.

Sanchez wasn’t even assured of his starting place heading into the new season, though he was named in Chelsea’s opening-day defeat to Manchester City in Enzo Maresca’s first game in charge.

He has failed to make the No 1 position his own despite his apparent lack of top-quality competition, though given the errors he has made, it could be considered that is more down to the player rather than the backroom team.

That said, allowing Kepa Arrizabalaga to move on in the same summer hardly seemed wise, while the fact two more goalkeepers have been signed since points to a total lack of direction.

12 Omari Kellyman £19m from Aston Villa, 2024

Aston Villa forward Omari Kellyman.

Of course, there is no blame attached to Kellyman himself here. A cynic could even say the owners were genuinely acting in the club’s best interests by signing the Aston Villa youngster for £19m in order to bypass concerns over the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

But of course, the very fact that Chelsea were in any sort of PSR predicament will have been directly down to their spending habits.

And given the vast sums of money spent over the last few years (not limited to the players on this list, nor even the Boehly regime – remember Lukaku?), Kellyman’s pricey arrival is a damning indictment not only on modern football but Chelsea’s financial mismanagements.

Leicester City have become the latest club charged with an alleged PSR breach, but what could happen next?

ByStephan Georgiou Apr 16, 2024 11 Wesley Fofana £70m from Leicester, 2022

Another one where you couldn’t squarely place the blame on the ownership, but Wesley Fofana’s Chelsea career has been an unmitigated disaster.

We’ll give the owners the benefit of the doubt, but they certainly haven’t had the best of luck, with Fofana making just 20 appearances before the start of this season, having missed the entirety of the 2023/24 campaign.

While Fofana’s luckless injury record is far from the owners’ fault, his transfer has still been a colossal waste of money thus far. But with the Frenchman not turning 24 until December, there is plenty of time to turn things around.

10 Malo Gusto £30.7m from Lyon, 2023

Malo Gusto is one of several Chelsea arrivals who have yet to reach their potential. Given he’s only 21, there is plenty of time for the Frenchman to become a true superstar and render his £30.7m transfer fee a bargain, but the decision-making process is what makes this move a bold one.

Nine assists in all competitions demonstrate a creative side from the full-back, though his ill-discipline was also on show, collecting seven yellows and a red in his only full season to date.

He has also been thrust into first-team action amid Reece James’ injury struggles, though the fingers can again be pointed at the ownership here – was spending so much on an understudy to one of the Blues’ best players (when fit) the best plan at a time he desperately needs games?

James’ fitness concerns have instead turned out to be a blessing for Gusto’s career, so here’s hoping he can make the most of his opportunity in the new campaign (sparing Boehly’s blushes in the process).

9 Axel Disasi £38.5m from Monaco, 2023

Despite scoring on debut against Liverpool last season, Axel Disasi can hardly claim to be the rock at the back Chelsea need – particularly amid the exit of Thiago Silva in the summer.

It would be harsh to pin the brunt of the blame at the centre-back’s door – he has shone on occasion – but for such an outlay on a defender who will be one of the more experienced heads in the Chelsea squad at 26, it could be argued that the Blues are yet to see a return on that hefty fee (which is no fault of the player’s, of course).

He was a trusted member of the squad under Mauricio Pochettino – he played 44 times in all competitions – but was nevertheless part of the worst defence in last season’s top eight.

One could argue that Pochettino’s exit and the likes of Trevoh Chalobah being banished from the first team – both decisions from up top – risk undoing Disasi’s progression to this point and putting too much pressure on him to come good for a team that is lacking in cohesion amid all the changes at Stamford Bridge.

8 Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang £10.3m from Barcelona, 2022

pierre-emerick-aubameyang-chelsea-premier-league

Given the aimless spending since their takeover, one of the more left-field signings from Chelsea was that of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Having previously left rivals Arsenal under a cloud after losing the captaincy there, the Gabon striker signed from Barcelona, where he seemed to rediscover his scoring touch.

However, that appeared to vanish once he returned to London. While hardly an obscene waste of money, it was most certainly a waste of time; a return of 3 goals in 22 games would hardly have been what Boehly and co were after.

But again, the owners aren’t completely blameless. They fired Thomas Tuchel just five days after signing Aubameyang, with successor Graham Potter limiting him to cameo showings off the bench as Auba’s Premier League comeback fell flat.

Ranking Chelsea's worst Premier League managers by win percentage

Mauricio Pochettino’s late-season revival was too little, too late for Chelsea…

ByAlex Roberts May 21, 2024 7 Raheem Sterling £50m from Man City, 2022

Handing a league rival £50m isn’t common – in fact, Chelsea were the first to do it in 2011 – but in this case, Manchester City were surely laughing all the way to the bank.

Raheem Sterling had not long been the star of England’s Euro 2020 campaign, but he had seen his chances at City dwindle despite their successes, with the arrival of Jack Grealish providing a strong challenge to his starting position.

Perhaps few could begrudge Chelsea for jumping on the opportunity of bringing Sterling to Stamford Bridge, but with plenty of iffy transfer market decisions being made, the Blues really could have done with a hit here.

Instead, Sterling has failed to assert himself at Chelsea, and is now on the way out following Enzo Maresca’s arrival. It will end a rather pitiful period for the winger, who notched 14 times in the Premier League in two seasons – just one more than in his final City campaign.

6 Enzo Fernandez £107m from Benfica, 2023

It’s the golden rule of a transfer window: never buy anyone purely off the back of a World Cup. But in early 2023, that’s exactly what Chelsea’s so-called transfer experts appeared to do when signing 21-year-old Enzo Fernandez, not to mention for a then-British record of £107m.

Clearlake’s penchant for long-term investments has arguably not been epitomised more than in the arrival of the Argentinian, who has failed to set Stamford Bridge alight since his nine-figure switch.

Despite this, he has featured heavily in a rare show of stability, if not a show of talent. For over £100m, one would surely expect Fernandez to be in the running for the Young Player of the Year award as a prime up-and-coming talent, but Chelsea’s only representative in that regard has been a City academy product bought for less than half that price.

For a club seemingly out of control when it comes to finances, they’re not even close to at least getting some success to justify their outlays.

Cole Palmer has deservedly taken home the 2023/24 Young Player of the Year award – following in the footsteps of several Premier League stars.

ByLuke Randall Aug 20, 2024 5 Benoit Badiashile £35m from Monaco, 2023

Having been at Chelsea for 18 months, Benoit Badiashile ought to have a longer list of accomplishments than he can currently claim. The Frenchman arrived in January 2023 on a seven-and-a-half-year deal, but didn’t exactly hit the ground running.

His performances have been slated, while he has only featured invariably for Chelsea. Injuries have played a part in this, but their inflated squad could also be to blame – despite being bought by Graham Potter (or rather, during his tenure), the centre-back was left out of the Blues’ Champions League squad ahead of the knockout stages in 2022/23.

Having yet to deliver in Chelsea colours despite all his promise, he is pretty much a living encapsulation of what the club has become under the Boehly regime.

4 Joao Felix Loan and £45m from Atletico Madrid, 2023 & 2024

This is Boehly’s Chelsea doing Boehly’s Chelsea things. Loaning Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid in early 2023 was intriguing enough – not least after he managed to get himself sent off on his debut.

His comeback didn’t see him installed as a first-team regular, with little to speak of his brief time in blue before returning to the Spanish capital, where he continued to be unsettled as he was shipped off to Barcelona for a year. It was a brow-raising deal, to say the least.

Then, amid all the chaos of being seemingly desperate to offload one of their finer academy products in recent years (no, not Mason Mount), Chelsea rather inexplicably turned to a familiar face after failing to sign Samu Omorodion – a striker – in order to allow Conor Gallagher to leave.

Having apparently disrespected the youngster during contract negotiations, deals for him and Gallagher looked off, even forcing the midfielder to return to training at Cobham, where he was clearly no longer wanted.

Joao Felix – not a striker – recently secured a return to Stamford Bridge, almost purely to get Gallagher off the books. So now the Blues are a midfielder light, have spent over the odds (Atleti have netted a sizeable profit over these deals) and have a player who they know was previously underwhelming. Confused? Good – so are we.
