Aston Villa could unearth McGinn 2.0 who has "similarities" to Watkins

If you had told the Aston Villa faithful that their club would be in contention to qualify for the Champions League this season, they would have simply laughed.

What was once a dream could now become reality, with Unai Emery leading the side to the world’s most prestigious club competition, with the Villans sitting fourth after 27 games.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery celebrates during a Premier League game.

However, it isn’t just the present that the Spaniard is looking to impact, with Villa’s recent activity in the transfer market suggesting that he’s looking towards the future.

In January, Villa acquired multiple outfield signings aged 21 and below – such as Morgan Rogers – but it’s a purchase before the current boss’ time at the club that could be next up – and even become the next John McGinn.

John McGinn’s season so far

The Scotland international has gone to a whole new level this season under Emery, taking to his new role as an inverted left midfielder extremely well.

McGinn has started every single Villa game in the league this season, playing 86 minutes on average per game, providing excellent leadership, and setting the example with the captain's armband on.

John McGinn

The 29-year-old is known for the energy and effort he brings each week without fail, but he has started to affect the game much more in the final third, netting six goals and providing three assists in the Premier League.

He is irreplaceable at Villa, and what he brings to the team is so priceless. Since the injury to Boubacar Kamara, the former Hibernian gem has dropped into a defensive role alongside Douglas Luiz, showing that he is versatile and, above all, that he’s willing to do anything to help his side out.

Kyrie Pierre could be a future star

In 2021, Villa signed an incredibly talented 15-year-old from Bristol Rovers, named Kyrie Pierre, for a fee of around £200k.

At the time of his signature for his new club, his old academy coach, Chris Hargreaves, was full of compliments regarding the young star, saying he had “similarities” to a certain Ollie Watkins, whom he had previously worked with at Exeter City:

"They’ve got that same energy on the pitch, which is infectious, and a belief they can go and do it."

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast's In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

The now-18-year-old – who has been described as "highly-rated" by journalist Ashley Preece – has played plenty of games in the academy at U18 and U23 level, racking up 55 appearances in total with a record of ten goal contributions.

Pierre is versatile, and he can play across the midfield, which makes him extremely similar to McGinn, who’s played mainly as a left midfielder. The youngster has primarily played on the wing this season, but last year he started most matches as a central midfielder.

It seems as though Pierre could become the perfect successor to McGinn, and Emery may plan to slowly introduce the number 70 into the first team setup in the near future.

The attitude and professionalism of Watkins – who boasts 33 goal involvements this season – and the versatility of McGinn make him a player to certainly keep an eye on.

Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues set to miss WBBL

India’s T20I captain Harmanpreet Kaur, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana and 19-year-old Jemimah Rodrigues, who has been on the radar of at least two teams, are unlikely to feature in the first standalone Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) – set to start much earlier than usual – from October 18 to December 8.The tournament is likely to clash with India’s month-long tour of the Caribbean, leaving the players with a very limited window towards the end of what will be the fifth season of the WBBL. ESPNcricinfo understands that the Indian team, currently playing a T20I series at home against South Africa, is tentatively slated to depart for the Caribbean on October 23. India will also play three ODIs against South Africa, with the last match on October 14.Scheduling aside, it is understood that the players were keen to be fresh for India’s tour of Australia next year which will feature a tri-series involving England – from January 31 to February 12 – ahead of the Women’s T20 World Cup to be held there in February-March. India will take on hosts and defending champions Australia in the tournament opener on February 21.The scheduling meant Sydney Thunder did not offer a contract extension to Harmanpreet, a key player in their line-up since 2016-17. Harmanpreet, however, was approached by the Melbourne Stars. Mandhana, who was contracted with the Hobart Hurricanes, was set to continue for a second consecutive edition. She had earlier been part of the Brisbane Heat in 2016-17.Rodrigues’ wait for a WBBL contract is set to continue. She enjoyed a breakthrough KSL season for Yorkshire Diamonds, finishing the season as the second-highest run-scorer. Her fearless approach in limited-overs formats has impressed many – including Australia captain Meg Lanning – since her international debut in February last year.Rodrigues’ high-scoring exploits on foreign soil – in South Africa (February 2018), New Zealand (earlier this year) and in the KSL, coupled with her chart-topping tally at the Women’s T20 Challenge at home in May, made her a sought-after player among two WBBL franchises.”The BCCI doesn’t discourage any of our women’s players from taking part in overseas leagues as long as their participation [in those tournaments] doesn’t clash with their national duties,” BCCI’s general manager (cricket operations) Saba Karim told ESPNcricinfo. “In this case, there’s an international series to be played, so that will automatically be on top of their list of priorities.”The standalone WBBL marks a departure from its preceding four seasons. With the exception of the women’s final last season which was accorded a standalone slot, on Australia Day, the women’s competition had traditionally run parallel to the men’s tournament.

Wow: Celtic eyeing moves for towering defender and international midfielder

Celtic are reportedly looking to seal a double swoop for a towering defender and an international midfielder, aiming to pip a number of Premier League clubs to their signatures.

Celtic transfer news

The Hoops will hope to have a strong summer in the transfer market, following a season that hasn't always gone to plan under Brendan Rodgers, as they trail Rangers in the Scottish Premiership title race.

One exciting rumour that has emerged is a return for Kieran Tierney at the end of the season, with the Scot's time at Arsenal becoming an increasingly disappointing one. He is currently on loan at Real Sociedad but could potentially jump at the chance to seal a Parkhead reunion and cement a permanent new home.

Celtic striker Adam Idah in action for the Republic of Ireland.

Meanwhile, current Celtic loanee Adam Idah could make a permanent move to the club in the summer transfer window, having enjoyed such a positive impact since joining in January, scoring five goals in six league appearances.

Another statement signing could be Caoimhin Kelleher from Liverpool, with the Irish goalkeeper linked with a move to the Hoops, as he potentially looks to be a No.1 away from Anfield this summer. His form in the absence of Alisson has been outstanding, but the Brazilian is possibly the best in the world in his position, and will oust his teammate upon his return.

Celtic eyeing exciting double swoop

According to a new report from HITC, Celtic want to clinch the double signing of Leopold Querfeld and Matthias Seidl, both of whom currently play for Rapid Vienna. The Hoops will face stern competition from Premier League side Crystal Palace, however, with new manager Oliver Glasner believed to be "interested" in snapping them up.

The report goes on to add that "Fulham, Burnley, Wolves and Leicester have also watched both players in action". Querfeld and Seidl may not necessarily be the household names that the likes of Tierney and Kelleher are, for example, but they could be shrewd additions by Celtic come the summer.

The former is a towering 6 foot 3 defender who has made 20 appearances in the Austrian Bundesliga this season, and he has won a total of 20 caps for Austria as youth level, still awaiting his maiden outing in the senior setup.

At 23, Seidl is a little more experienced than his 20-year-old teammate, and he has five goals his name in the league this season, highlighting his end product from the middle of the park. Unlike his colleague, he has been capped for Austria's senior team, featuring three times to date, and he could add quality and depth to Rodgers' midfield.

Celtic ready to bid for former star this summer who would cost record fee

The Scottish champions are weighing up a move to bring back an old favourite.

ByBen Browning Mar 6, 2024

The level of Premier League interest will likely make it difficult to sign both Querfeld and Seidl, such is the lure of playing in arguably the biggest league in the world, but Celtic are a huge club in their own right, and could give the pair Champions League football, unlike others.

Leeds ready to accept offer for £40,000-a-week player not in Farke’s plans

Daniel Farke is already planning for the summer transfer window, it has emerged, with Leeds United ready to part ways with one man permanently.

Leeds on course for Premier League return

As it stands, Leeds will be playing Premier League football next season.

Currently second in the Championship, they are the most in-form side in the division and sit just three points off top spot with nine games left to play. A 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday on Friday ensured that they leapfrogged Ipswich Town into the second automatic promotion spot, and Farke's side may now have their eyes on winning the title.

Club told to "accept any deal" over £10m for player Leeds want – report

Leeds could well have been dealt a major boost.

ByBen Browning Mar 12, 2024

Almost mathematically guaranteed a play-off spot, the Yorkshire side will at the very least have a chance at making it into the top flight should they collapse in the final run-in. Irrespective of what happens though, they are getting ready for a big summer.

Leeds ready to accept offer for defender

It had previously been reported that Leeds were willing to accept a permanent offer for Brenden Aaronson, but now another name has emerged as one that the Elland Road outfit are ready to cash in on.

That comes in the form of right-back Rasmus Kristensen, who was signed from RB Salzburg along with Aaronson in July 2022. He appeared 30 times for the Yorkshire side but could not stop them from being relegated come the end of the campaign.

Leeds defender Rasmus Kristensen.

That was his signal to leave the club, and he has spent this season on loan at AS Roma in Serie A, where he has started 16 times in the Italian top flight, though his side are currently struggling and recently parted ways with legendary boss Jose Mourinho. Currently fifth, they are a whopping 28 points behind league leaders Inter Milan, and face an uphill battle to gain Champions League football for next season.

Though there is no option to buy in Kristensen's loan deal, it is understood that he will not be returning to Elland Road. That is according to Football Insider, who claim that the Dane 'is not likely to fit into Farke’s plans at Leeds United' irrespective of whether or not Leeds are in the top flight or the Championship next season.

They add that Farke will 'look to remain loyal to the players who have served him well' this season, and as a result, he is 'ready to accept offers for several of their on-loan stars', which includes Kristensen.

As it stands, Kristensen's contract runs until 2027 at Elland Road, where he is understood to earn around £40,000 per week. Should they be able to offload him this summer, the club could save themselves over £6m.

Further speculation will surround the likes of Marc Roca, who is currently on loan in Spain, and centre-back Maximilian Wober, who has spent the season with Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach. Leeds may have to accept a loss on several of them, however, so it could be a busy summer off the pitch.
