Essex’s Mady Villiers has earned her first call-up to the England Women’s squad for the T20Is against Australia, as they look to save face after surrendering the Ashes in last week’s drawn Test in Taunton.Villiers, 20, made an unbeaten half-century for England’s Academy in the Australians’ Test warm-up match, and impressed with her resolve after coming in at No.9 to a scoreline of 89 for 8 at Marlborough. She is the only new face in a 15-player squad, as England – currently 8-2 down in the multi-format Ashes – seek the 3-0 clean sweep in the T20s that would allow them to claim a share of the series.Captain Heather Knight said: “It’s almost like a one-off IT20 series and we need to give it everything across these last three matches.”We came back strongly in Australia in 2017 and it would feel very different if we ended up at 8-8. That has to be our aim now and we want to finish strongly.”The first of the three T20Is takes place in Chelmsford on Friday.England squad Heather Knight (capt), Tammy Beaumont, Katherine Brunt, Kate Cross, Sophie Ecclestone, Georgia Elwiss, Jenny Gunn, Amy Jones, Laura Marsh, Nat Sciver, Anya Shrubsole, Sarah Taylor, Mady Villiers, Lauren Winfield, Danni Wyatt

Man Utd selling £1.4m talent was a bigger mistake than Blind

Manchester United’s season has been full of inconsistencies on and off the field.

Absentees have played a huge role in disrupting Erik ten Hag’s plans, with what seems to be a never-ending injury crisis.

Nevertheless, let’s take a look at a former player who could have eased the Red Devils’ injury woes.

Matteo Darmian’s time at United

Matteo Darmian joined United during the Louis Van Gaal era, switching Torino for the Premier League in a deal worth £12.7m.

During his first campaign at the club during the 2015/16 Premier League season, the Italian started 24 games while sharing the right-back position with Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young.

Matteo Darmian for Man United

The following season, Jose Mourinho arrived and utilised the full-back much less than Van Gaal did, as he made just 15 starts.

Darmian became surplus to requirements at United under the Portuguese boss, only making 14 league appearances over the next two seasons, although his final campaign under the lights at Old Trafford was hindered by injuries, where he missed 21 matches through various knocks.

Darmian’s career post Man United

Daley Blind is one of the more recognisable names to have thrived since leaving United, becoming a vital player for the Netherlands, Ajax, and now Girona, who are lighting up La Liga, having made 23 league appearances in Spain's top-flight this season.

However, Darmian has followed a similar path to success as Blind since departing the club for just £1.4m in 2019 – a fee ten times less than that of the Dutchman (£14m). The defender started 33 games back in the Serie A for Parma, and a year later he moved to Inter on loan before the club made the move permanent.

Matteo Darmian for Inter Milan

Since then, he has become an extremely important squad player for Inter, playing 11 games during the club’s road to the UEFA Champions League final last season. During his time at I Nerazzurri, Darmian has played 147 matches.

The main reason as to why selling Darmian was a huge mistake by United is due to him being very "versatile," as per football creator Liam Canning, which would have been of use this season in particular.

The 34-year-old has played 30 games across all competitions this season, featuring as a right midfielder, a right back, and a right centre back, proving that he could have provided cover for the likes of Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who have all suffered from injuries this term.

Another aspect of Darmian’s game that is closely linked to that is his availability, with the 6 foot rock missing just 13 games since leaving the Premier League. United have been unable to field a consistent backline all season, but the Italian could have been a mainstay in the team if Mourinho didn’t let go of the defender.

While Ten Hag may also have valued a figure like his compatriot, Blind, Darmian may well represent the bigger miss, having shown his defensive prowess by ranking in the top 21% among his European peers for tackles per 90, as well as his attacking intent by ranking in the top 5% for shot-creating actions – his former teammate, by contrast, ranks in just the top 46% and the top 7% for those same two metrics, respectively.

Man Utd can unleash "standout" teen who's "Luke Shaw's successor"

The lack of depth at left back will concern Erik ten Hag.

ByTom Lever Feb 13, 2024

Considering how cheaply the Italian was sold in contrast to the Dutchman, it is clear to see the potential mistake that United made by selling a player who could potentially have been a useful asset under the current regime.

Spurs’ "world-class" £30m sale would be better than Maddison for Ange

Tottenham Hotspur have sold some high-profile players over the years, chairman Daniel Levy cashing in lucratively but unable to add to his sole slice of silverware since purchasing a stake in the club from Lord Alan Sugar for £22m way back in 2000.

That triumph, a 2-1 League Cup final win in 2008 after defeating Chelsea in extra-time, signalled progress and tantalised further honours down the line, but Ange Postecoglou is currently seeking to rebuild the club in 2023 after several years of inconsistency, the search for trophies dating back to that historical result.

Spurs have been a major player in the Premier League for some time and have fought and failed across some big moments – coming up short in the title race as Leicester City prevailed back in 2015/16; losing League Cup finals against Chelsea and Manchester City; falling short at the final hurdle in the Champions League against Liverpool, which is perhaps the bitterest of them all.

Harry Kane for Tottenham.

But, there is hope that Postecoglou is the man to lead the march toward prosperity, the Australian crafting an exciting team despite the blow of Harry Kane's £100m transfer to Bayern Munich back in August.

The departure of Tottenham's record scorer was a bitter pill to swallow, but it's not the only time the club has waved goodbye to a superstar, with Gareth Bale transferring to Real Madrid for a world-record £85m back in 2013.

Bale enjoyed riches in the Spanish capital but he was not the only Galactico to have thrived throughout this golden era of Los Blancos' glittering history, with Luka Modric presently enjoying this twilit stage of his career knowing that he will go down as one of the finest players of his generation.

Luka Modric's Real Madrid career

Modric's time at Tottenham served as the launchpad for a career for the ages, but it would be difficult to make a compelling case against his £30m transfer to Santiago Bernabeu in August 2012, where he has won five Champions League, three La Liga and two Copa del Rey titles as well as the Ballon d'Or, Best FIFA Men's Player and UEFA Player of the Year in 2018.

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric.

Would he have achieved all this in the English capital? Candidly, probably not. Modric, now 38 years old, has only started 11 matches in the Spanish top-flight this season as Carlo Ancelotti's side move seemingly inexorably toward the trophy, also among the favourites to win a record-extending 15th Champions League title this term.

In total, the 172-capped Croatia legend has amassed 516 appearances for Real Madrid, winning honours in their hoardes and starring at the very heart of one of the game's greatest modern midfield triumvirates with Toni Kroos and Casemiro.

Despite his ageing years, Modric remains one of football's elite technical stars, ranking among the top 9% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 1% for shot-creating actions and progressive passes, the top 4% for passes attempted, the top 14% for pass completion and the top 12% for progressive carries per 90, as per FBref.

It's quite evident that he would do a job under Postecoglou's leadership, bringing leadership and fluency and a celestial technical touch to give the Lilywhites the edge.

Nuno's Spurs signing is now worth 187% more & a Rodri clone

Ange Postecoglou is shaping this rising star into one of the Premier League’s finest talents.

ByAngus Sinclair Feb 20, 2024

He's shown his class at the club in the past, arriving as something of an unknown commodity way back when.

How much Spurs paid for Luka Modric

Tottenham signed Modric from his homeland for a £15m fee back in 2008, beating the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle United to his signature.

Sir Alex Ferguson once said that the Croatian "could play in any team" as he wreaked havoc and pulled strings from the engine room at Tottenham, utterly mesmerising across his 160 displays in Spurs white, bagging 17 goals and 25 assists.

Journalist Liam Canning hailed Modric as “world-class” for his exploits with Croatia across recent years but, truthfully, the seeds were planted right from his days at Tottenham, talent rooted in tenacity, application and erudite match intelligence.

What a player. What memories. To think that he is still performing for Real Madrid to this day, 38 – alongside prodigious talents such as Jude Bellingham, who was five years old when the sandy-haired dynamo was purchased by Harry Redknapp all those years ago – is truly exceptional.

Just imagine if he still played for Spurs. Imagine what could have been.

Modric would thrive for Ange

Postecoglou's Tottenham system is built on innate tactical understanding and interchangeability in role and movement. A the core, though, a high-class operator is requisite for perfect balance.

There's an old saying in football that the engineers in the centre of the park go unseen: watch the game, they shall evade your gaze; watch them, and watch the magic unfurl.

Luka Modric for Tottenham.

Modric possibly doesn't quite fall into that category, for he has dazzled with his defence-splitting passes, his thumping strikes, and his relentless recycling of possession, but he certainly makes things happen, wrenching openings oblivious to the eyes of his peers.

This level of mastery would allow the likes of Heung-min Son, Richarlison and co to thrive at a standard inconceivable, surpassing even the prowess of James Maddison, who has widely been regarded as one of the Premier League's standout stars this season after transferring to Spurs from Leicester City for £40m back in July.

Maddison does rank among the top 7% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 1% for shot-creating actions and the top 4% for progressive passes per 90, showcasing his first-rate playmaking ability, but he's no Modric.

Modric can do it all, sit deeper, influence behind the frontline, occupy space box-to-box. He is ubiquitous on the pitch and would not only prove to be a creator above Maddison's level, but an anchor eclipsing Yves Bissouma's tough-tackling style; a conductor trumping Rodrigo Bentancur for his cleverness in possession, and without; a multi-functional ace to leave Pape Matar Sarr quaking, so far is the distance between exciting talent and the true pedigree of one of the very best.

Tottenham have the tools to mount a revival over these coming years, spurred on by Postecoglou's vision, but make no mistake: Modric would be the key component to ensure illustrious triumph returned to N17, even at his maturing age.

'We felt a bit like we got the Ashes stolen' – Justin Langer

Langer admits past week has been one of the most challenging of his coaching career

Daniel Brettig in Manchester02-Sep-2019″The art of competing, I’d learned from track, was the art of forgetting, and I now reminded myself of that fact. You must forget your limits. You must forget your doubts, your pain, your past.”Adam Gilchrist once penned a book called Walking To Victory. For Justin Langer, a more appropriate title might be Reading For Victory. Like a bowerbird, he pulls quotes, observations and stories from all over sport, business and life to inform his coaching of the Australian team and to provide him with examples and experiences to throw at his players. One of his recent reads has been Shoe Dog, the memoir of Nike’s founder Phil Knight, and the above line can be found within its pages.Knight’s story, while ending with Nike’s domination of the global market for sporting footwear, includes plenty of failures, wrong turns and false dawns. It goes a long way toward demonstrating that even the most successful individuals or organisations tend to fail a lot more often than they succeed, even if the ultimate success may be larger than the many individual failures that led to it. In his assessment of Shoe Dog, Bill Gates lauded it for uncovering the non-linear nature of long-term success.Gates wrote that the memoir is “a refreshingly honest reminder of what the path to business success really looks like. It’s a messy, perilous, and chaotic journey riddled with mistakes, endless struggles, and sacrifice. In fact, the only thing that seems inevitable in page after page of Knight’s story is that his company will end in failure”.Being able to face the knockdowns and defeats then continue forging on towards the final goal is a pretty relevant message for Langer and Australia this week, having lived through the trauma of Headingley. For all but the final hour of the Leeds Test, the tourists were set to record a famous victory of their own, claiming the Ashes without the services of their best batsman Steven Smith. The intervention of Ben Stokes, the staunch support of Jack Leach, and a good degree of tightening up by the Australians added up to a memorable finish but also a sequence that left Langer and his team feeling not just pained, but ill.As Langer reflected, this was all the harder to take for the fact that Australia’s preparation for this Ashes campaign, over a period of several years since their failure to retain the urn here in 2015, has been rigorous, attentive to the lessons of the past and with very little expense spared. The return of Steve Waugh for the final two Tests of this series, having originally been slated only to be working with the team for Edgbaston and Lord’s, is yet another example, but there are others like the use of Dukes balls in the Sheffield Shield and the Australia A tour run parallel to the World Cup.Justin Langer outside the Australian team hotel•PA Images via Getty Images

There has been tactical and cultural humility, too, dovetailing a more considered approach to playing English conditions – shut down the scoreboard in the field, leave the ball diligently with the bat – with the wider change in attitude and outlook charted by Cricket Australia in the wake of last year’s Newlands scandal. Knowing all these details intimately, and having taken such a major role in their planning and execution, it is little wonder Langer was close to bereft at the moment Stokes carved Pat Cummins through the covers to level the series at 1-1.”The main challenge, the biggest one, is that you know how much work’s gone into winning this Ashes series,” Langer said. “It’s been huge, from the preparation, the Australia A stuff, the selections, everything that’s gone into it, and it was that close, we were that close. That’s the toughest part of it, we were that close, and we let an opportunity slip. Therefore, when you let an opportunity slip you can dwell on it or you can use it as fire to make sure it doesn’t slip next time.”Everyone in that change room, probably a lot of Australians felt it, but felt completely sick after that. I actually felt physically sick after it, and then I went back to my room, I wasn’t sure whether to cry my eyes out or smash my hotel room. For most people it’s just a game of cricket, but when so much goes into it, it means a lot. You do take it personally because I know how much work’s going into it.”That was the biggest part of losing last week, that we felt we were so close and we let it slip. You never like to let opportunities slip in your life. That’s ok, we’ll make sure we learn from it, we’ll learn a lot of lessons from that, short term and long term, and hopefully we can do it better next time.”Justin Langer at a fielding session•PA Images via Getty Images

How Australia do it better is a fairly straightforward question. They need more runs – Langer pointed to the fact that Australia seldom lose a Test match when they score more than 300 in their first innings – and a tad more composure with the ball at vital times They must also remember their strengths, whether it be greatly improved catching at Headingley, or Nathan Lyon’s strong record of creating chances when bowling to Stokes, even if none were able to be turned into victory in the third Test.”It was a tight game alright and we’d rather be on the other side of it,” Langer said. “For most of the game we played pretty good cricket. Still have to bat better, we haven’t got 300 in the first innings yet. Every time we’ve got 300 we’ve at the very least won the Test match in the first innings over the last 20 Test matches. It’s a huge focus batting well in the first innings.”The last week of coaching has probably been one of the most challenging weeks of my coaching career after what happened at Leeds. That said, as challenging as it has been, it’s been awesome. I’ve loved this last week of coaching, because you can sit back and feel sorry for yourself or put it under the carpet or you can work out ways to make sure we are up for the first ball of the next Test match.”Asked about those many written and verbal lessons about coping with failure, in the context of this Ashes series, Langer returned to another of his stories: that of how, as a child, Muhammad Ali had his bike stolen and used the pain of the experience to help fuel his legendary boxing career. Forgetting is vital to an athlete’s mindset, but so too, at times, is remembering.”The champions all have had times of adversity. Whether it’s in business, sport or life,” Langer said. “The ones who come back from it – think about Muhammad Ali getting his bike stolen.”We felt a bit like we got the Ashes stolen the other day. And to England’s great credit, that’s what they did. They won that Test match , so we felt a bit like it’d been stolen from us. Now we’ve got to work out what we’re going to do, and use that as fire.”We’re not going to feel sorry for ourselves and let it slip. The great players and great teams – in business and life – they have their ups and downs but they always fight back from it. You wouldn’t see one champion player, one champion team, one champion business that hasn’t done that.”Vital, too, will be a sense of equilibrium and peace about the results to follow. Having done all the work, the preparation and tried to choose the right teams for Old Trafford and The Oval, Langer and his team will also have to let things go, and acknowledge that days like Stokes’ at Headingley can happen in sport. As Knight put it: “Hard work is critical, a good team is essential, brains and determination are invaluable, but luck may decide the outcome.”
