Dane Piedt's 13-wicket haul solidifies Cape Cobras' title hopes

Wiaan Mulder, meanwhile, struck a career-best 146 to keep Lions in close pursuit of the table-toppers

Results summaryA career-best match haul of 13 for 141 from Cape Cobras captain Dane Piedt helped his team maintain a slim lead at the top of the points table after the penultimate round of the 4-Day Franchise Series in South Africa.Piedt was in the wickets with his offspin from the first innings of the match in Oudtshoorn, skittling the middle and lower order to pick up 6 for 75 as Titans reached 275 after choosing to bat. A 135-run opening stand between Simon Khomari and Pieter Malan helped the Cobras secure a 100-run first-innings lead, and Piedt pressed home the advantage in Titans’ second innings.Opening the bowling on a pitch offering generous help for the spinners, he collected 7 for 66 in 28.1 overs, while George Linde bowled 30 overs of left-arm spin and Andrea Agathangelou’s 84 provided the only resistance as Titans were bowled out for 151. That left Cobras needing 52, Zubayr Hamza’s unbeaten 26 seeing them to an eight-wicket win with a day to spare. That result opened up a significant lead of more than 25 points at the top for Cobras, but Lions narrowed it to just over three points with their sixth win of the competition. Lions’ eventual five-wicket win over Knights at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein was built on sterling performances with both bat and ball: Wiaan Mulder, Kagiso Rapulana and Nono Pongolo all achieved career-best performances with the bat, while left-arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin collected his best ever first-class figures.Fortuin’s 7 for 70 meant meant Knights could only reach 357 despite a strong start from their top order. Rapulana and Mulder’s centuries – their highest scores in franchise cricket – and Pongolo’s maiden franchise fifty opened up a 133-run lead, and Pongolo’s 4 for 49 in the second innings tipped the balance further. Lions made heavy weather of a second-innings target of 76, losing five wickets, but Dominic Hendricks’ 49 not out saw them home, and closed the gap on Cobras.Zubayr Hamza keeps his eyes on the ball•BCCI

Meanwhile, bad weather seems to be following Dolphins around. Last week, rain washed out much of their match against Knights in Pietermaritzburg, and inclement weather also forced a draw in their game against Warriors in East London. After captain Jon-Jon Smuts won the toss and opted to bat first, Warriors made a strong start thanks to centuries from Edward Moore and Yaseen Vallie, declaring their first innings at 436 for 7. Having conceded a first-innings lead of 118, Dolphins clawed back thanks to seamer Eathan Bosch, whose 4 for 36 reduced Warriors to 163 for 9 in their second innings. That was the score on which they declared for the second time in the game after play on the final day only got underway after the lunch break with bad light playing havoc with the day’s action. Set 275 to win, Dolphins were kept ticking by Marques Ackerman’s rapid 77 and had reached 171 for 5 in 30 overs, with a possible 22 overs left in the day, before the weather closed in once again to force a draw.On the national radarAs South Africa continue to consider their all-round options in both the Test and limited-overs sides, Wiaan Mulder’s career-best 146 and cheap second-innings wickets will not go amiss. Temba Bavuma’s impact with the bat in the same match was modest – he managed 30 in the first innings and 6 in the second – while Zubayr Hamza returned to franchise cricket after his Test debut against Pakistan with scores of 28 and 26 not out in Cobras’ win.Top performerDane Piedt now sits comfortably at the top of the competition bowling tables after his 13-wicket match haul took him to 52 in nine games this season.Piedt has led Cobras with aplomb this season, as well as recording both his best figures in an innings and his best-ever match haul. He also struck his maiden first-class century against Knights in Bloemfontein to kick off the new year, and if Cobras can maintain their slim lead over Lions, he will have some silverware to cap what has been a brilliant season.

Details emerge about Bailey Cadamarteri’s new Sheffield Wednesday contract

Reliable journalist Joe Crann has revealed some key details that have emerged regarding Bailey Cadamarteri’s new Sheffield Wednesday deal.

Cadamarteri signs new Sheff Wed deal

There has been something of a resurgence from the Owls in recent times, with Danny Rohl not necessarily always getting positive results, but bringing more of a feel-good factor back to Hillsborough after Xisco Munoz's disappointing reign.

There have also been important wins at home to Blackburn Rovers and away to Stoke City, however, while a late 1-1 with Leicester City was an impressive point, too, and a feeling for the first time that this season is not over yet.

Rohl deserves real credit for the impact that he has made, and one player who has arguably benefited more than most is Cadamarteri, who has been handed his debut by the 34-year-old, making a real impact in the process. The teenage striker has already scored twice in his first seven appearances for Wednesday, and he is performing with real maturity, considering what a young player he is.

The 18-year-old has been rewarded for his good recent form with a new contract at Hillsborough, with the Englishman seen as a big young prospect for the future – one who will hopefully remain with the Owls for as long as possible. The length of Cadamarteri's contract wasn't confirmed, however, but a new update has now shed light on the situation.

Journalist makes exciting Cadamarteri claim

Taking to X on Saturday morning, Crann claimed that Cadamarteri has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal with Sheffield Wednesday.

Sheffield Wednesday's home stadium, Hillsborough.

"Understand that Bailey Cadamarteri was handed a 4.5 year deal as he committed his future to SWFC – should take him through until 2028."

Meanwhile, in Crann's report for The Sheffield Star, he states that the news is "music to the ears of Owls fans everywhere", given the impact that the youngster has made in recent times.

This is indeed fantastic news for Wednesday, who aren't exactly a club renowned for producing top young talents who go on to shine for the Owls for a sustained period of time. While it is still early days with Cadamarteri, the early signs are promising, with the striker possessing a physicality beyond his years, as well as a natural striker's instinct in front of goal. He also netted twice in five appearances for the Under-18s, and the hope is that he keeps progressing under Rohl, becoming a regular starter over time and a key feature of the boss' rebuild.

This is an Owls squad with ageing attacking players in it, from Lee Gregory to Michael Smith – even Josh Windass turns 30 in January – and it would be so exciting to see a homegrown star lead the line effectively.

Sheffield Wednesday could sign Fletcher upgrade who's outscoring Cadamarteri

This £11.5k-per-week striker could be Sheffield Wednesday’s perfect replacement for Ashley Fletcher.

ByAdam Scully Dec 12, 2023

Cadamarteri's new deal also means that Wednesday can now demand good money for his services, should interest in him emerge over the coming years, rather than make the error of not protecting his value and seeing him leave on the cheap.

This news is just another positive to add to the list at Hillsborough right now, even though Rohl's side remain rooted near the bottom of the Championship table.

Finch, Gurney bolster Renegades in top four

Melbourne Renegades completed a defence of 152 to defeat the Sydney Thunder – one of their nearest rivals on the competition table – by 12 runs in Sydney

The Report by Daniel Brettig22-Jan-2019

Melbourne Renegades solidified their place in the Big Bash League top four with a stout defence of 152 to defeat the Sydney Thunder – one of their nearest rivals on the competition table – by 12 runs in a defensive affair at the Sydney Showground Stadium. The visiting captain, Aaron Finch, made a vital half-century, not only for the Renegades but his own peace of mind after a difficult summer, and with assistance from Cameron White was able to lift the Melbourne side to a defensible total on a somewhat sluggish pitch. In the chase, Callum Ferguson appeared to have given the Thunder a strong chance to chase down their target, but his dismissal amid an admirably tight spell by Cameron Boyce – who had been unsuccessfully promoted to open with Finch – left the young batsman Jason Sangha unable to summon the big hits required to finish off the job.Finch begins finding himselfOver a summer in which he graduated into, then flunked out of, the Australian Test team, Finch has seemed to get increasingly frazzled by the array of formats and tasks confronting him, to the point that his role as the national limited-overs captain in a World Cup year has become in danger of being affected. At the conclusion of the ODI series against India, the Australian coach Justin Langer expressed hope that Finch would regain some equilibrium via the BBL.A halting stay worth only 14 in the Melbourne Derby was not exactly promising, but against the Thunder Finch was able to get himself going in the sort of manner he will hope to make a habit of over the next six months or more. Though the Renegades started off with the experimental presence of Cameron Boyce at the top of the order alongside Finch, the captain was able to build into an innings of confidence and some heavy hitting that reaped four sixes while not giving a chance until he fell to Sandhu. It’s a long way from the World Cup final, but it’s a start.Sams, Sandhu keep Renegades in checkAt 3 for 116 in the 16th over, the Renegades had successfully absorbed the loss of early wickets and also a parsimonious spell by Fawad Ahmed to appear set for a late ransacking of runs. However, Sandhu’s fooling of Finch with a slower ball was to set the scene for a twist in the innings, as Sandhu and Sams put the clamps on by claiming regular wickets.White’s innings of 40, featuring 14 cuffed from one over from Chris Jordan, ensured the Renegades did not lose all momentum, but three wickets apiece for Sandhu and Sams had the Thunder looking confident at the innings break.Ferguson sets things upDuring a long career that might have featured more international cricket but for a terribly timed knee injury in 2009, Ferguson has proven himself to be an expert at the sorts of modulated, balanced innings critical to white-ball success. Coming in at the fall of Anton Devcich in the very first over, pouched at third man, Ferguson shrugged off the loss of the powerful Shane Watson shortly after to appear to set up the Thunder for a fruitful chase. His stand with Jason Sangha relied upon Ferguson finding the boundary with some regularity, and when Sangha advanced to dispatch Boyce inside-out over cover in the 13th over, the partnership appeared set to enter another gear. That, though, was to reckon without Boyce.Boyce holds the Renegades centreDiscarded by Tasmania and unwanted by Queensland after the Bulls chose to move on to the younger Mitchell Swepson, Boyce has proven an excellent acquisition by the Renegades as a willing wristspinner who has found an artful balance between defence and attack. His spell to the Thunder rather summed this up, as he conceded only a single boundary in four overs. At the same time he was able to coax Ferguson into a blow that fell fractionally short of the long-on boundary and into the hands of a jumping Dan Christian, leaving Sangha to fight an ultimately losing battle with his own timing and boundary-scoring as the Renegades squeaked their way to victory.

+ Veja a tabela do Brasileirão

O’Neil could land dream Dawson replacement in Wolves move for 6ft 1 "monster"

Wolverhampton Wanderers head into their Christmas Eve fixture against Chelsea knowing a win could be the catalyst to spark great joy around Molineux.

The Old Gold currently occupies 13th position in the Premier League table and for large spells of the season, have performed well under Gary O’Neil.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil.

With the January transfer window fast approaching, the 40-year-old coach could delve into the market in order to sign a player or two who could improve their squad as they aim to secure a spot in the top half of the table.

Wolves Transfer news

With the transfer window just around the corner, the rumour mill has linked a few names with the club already.

According to Turkish outlet Aksam, the Molineux outfit are reportedly eyeing a move for Galatasaray defender Victor Nelsson next month, as O’Neil looks set to strengthen his defensive options.

His contract does not expire until 2026, yet he has not enjoyed the most productive of seasons in Turkey – making 14 starts for the club – and it appears as though Wolves are exploring a loan-to-buy deal.

Galatasaray defender Victor Nelsson.

With Craig Dawson approaching 34, it could be an ideal time to start thinking of potential players who could replace the veteran and Nelsson has the required qualities to succeed at Wolves.

Victor Nelsson could replace Craig Dawson

Wolves signed Dawson from West Ham United back in January, and he has been a calming presence at the heart of their defence as they looked to fill the void left by Conor Coady.

Indeed, this season, the Englishman currently ranks second in the squad for accurate passes per game (46.7) while also ranking first for accurate long balls per game (4.4) and second for clearances per game (4.6) as he continues to excel at the highest level.

With a contract until 2025, the club may only have 18 months left of the defender, and signing Nelsson could be a dream way of bringing an adequate replacement in.

The Danish defender was dubbed a “monster” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig during his time at FC Copenhagen and he has impressed in spells during his time in Turkey.

Last season, the centre-back finished top of the pile when it came to accurate passes per game (49.7) in the Turkish top flight, while also ranking second for clearances per game (3.3) and accurate long balls per game (3.6) and these statistics were similar to those that Dawson has recorded this term.

According to WhoScored, Nelsson excels at aerial duels while he does not dive into tackles, and these skills, combined with his reliable passing ability, could make him a standout in O’Neil’s side.

It is clear that the club need reinforcements during the January window and with the former Bournemouth manager looking to the future, the 6 foot 1 titan could be a dream signing.

O’Neil could sign big Gomes upgrade with Wolves move for "fabulous" £7m ace

Wolves will be actively pursuing this target in January to bolster their midfield options.

ByKelan Sarson Dec 22, 2023

He has won a league title with Galatasaray along with playing in the Champions League and, at just 25 years old, he is arguably not even at his peak yet.

It remains to be seen whether it will be a loan deal or a permanent transfer, but the 40-year-old tactician needs to make a move sooner rather than later to find the long-term heir to Dawson's position and Nelsson could be a shrewd addition.

AB de Villiers' 50-ball ton wipes out Dhaka Dynamites

The former SA batsman strung together a devastating stand of 184 with Alex Hales to lift Rangpur from 5 for 2 and see them home in 187-run chase with ten balls to spare

The Report by Peter Della Penna28-Jan-2019

How the game played outThe Rangpur Riders runaway train whistled past Dhaka Dynamites at breakneck speed in a thumping eight-wicket win with 10 balls to spare. AB de Villiers and Alex Hales were joint conductors during a rollicking 184-run partnership, the highest of BPL 2019. De Villiers, who had simmered in his first two innings of BPL 2019, finally exploded for a 50-ball unbeaten century, while Hales clubbed 85 not out off 53 balls, including the winning runs.Rangpur’s rampaging Powerplay, which they ended on 63, made the Dynamites effort look tame by comparison, especially considering that the Dynamites took until their 21st ball to score a boundary after having chosen to bat first. The early crawl cost them on a batting paradise that produced two centuries on the day, first from the bat of Evin Lewis of Comilla Victorians in the afternoon’s first game, before de Villiers capped off the night with his match-winning ton for the Riders.Turning points Shakib Al Hasan was scoring at over 200, but went too far across his stumps while attempting to scoop Farhad Reza in the 12th over, to be bowled for 25. Reza pulled off his second dramatic catch of the day in the 14th over, running 20 yards left at deep midwicket, before extending his body full tilt and hurling himself to clutch onto a skier from Andre Russell just inside the boundary. After Russell dismissed Chris Gayle and Rilee Rossouw in the second over, de Villiers hooked the hat-trick ball for six, and then proceeded to torch Shakib, Russell and Sunil Narine for 22 more off his next seven balls, all of them through boundariesStar of the dayDe Villiers showed why he’s a modern great with a typically audacious counterattack. He didn’t flinch in hooking Russell first up, and never looked back thereafter. He took 24 balls to reach his half-century, and another 26 to reach three figures in a chanceless effort, all while the Chattogram crowd chanted “A-B! A-B!”The big missPerhaps sensing the need to have a big finish on a flat pitch, Dynamites allrounder Kieron Pollard decided before the start of the 20th over that he would face everything. While he hit two boundaries against Shafiul Islam, he also turned down three singles, before chipping a yorker for one off the innings’ last ball, failing to provide the desired boom at the end of the Dynamites innings.Where the teams standRiders moved into a three-way tie for first place on 12 points with Comilla Victorians and Chittagong Vikings, though Riders hold the edge over both on net run rate. Dynamites remain tied for fourth with Rajshahi Kings on 10 points, but Dynamites have a game in hand as well as a massive net run rate advantage.
