Jones starts & "lethal" star benched in Liverpool’s predicted lineup vs City

Liverpool just need to win in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon to move into first place for the first time this season, the sticking point being that that contest is against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

The Reds have been excellent this season having fallen by the wayside last year, and Jurgen Klopp could now establish a lead against the seemingly indomitable force that is Pep Guardiola's City.

The hosts have not lost on home territory against Liverpool in the English top flight since November 2015, which was mere weeks into Klopp's tenure, but the match tomorrow afternoon will be compelling, and either side could prevail.

Long-term absentees Thiago Alcantara, Stefan Bajcetic and Andy Robertson all remain sidelined for the visitors, but Liverpool will be galvanised by a host of players' return to fitness this week.

With multiple players not back in contention, Football FanCast predicts the Liverpool line-up at the Etihad, with four changes expected from the side that powered past Brentford…

1 GK – Alisson Becker

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson.

There's no doubt that Alisson will start between the sticks for the toughest fixture of the Premier League season. What is there to say? He's slick and progressive, commanding and vigilant; the Brazilian is arguably the best shot-stopper in world football. His performance may well shape the narrative.

2 RB – Trent Alexander-Arnold

jarrod-bowen-trent-alexander-arnold-liverpool-transfer-premier-league

The 2022/23 season was not enjoyable for Liverpool and especially so for Trent Alexander-Arnold, though it did initiate his tactical tweak as an inverted, hybrid midfielder in possession.

The England international's defensive skills will be tested against Jeremy Doku, one of the division's most frightening dribblers, but his creativity could unlock City's defence in a flash.

3 CB – Joe Gomez

piero-hincapie-joe-gomez-liverpool-transfer-premier-league

Joe Gomez's redemption arc has been joyful. The 26-year-old was not doing very well last year and was even branded as "finished" by podcaster Graeme Kelly after a shocking performance against Southampton in the season finale.

Liverpool could bully Haaland by unleashing £85k-p/w "nightmare"

Jurgen Klopp’s side face the onerous Lunchtime trip to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City tomorrow.

ByAngus Sinclair Nov 24, 2023

Versatile and reliable this term, Gomez has been used across a range of roles and will be integral in stuffing Erling Haaland's attempts on goal, boasting pace and physicality to stifle the Norwegian.

4 CB – Virgil van Dijk

They said he was past his sell-by date… Virgil van Dijk has rekindled his former imperiousness since donning the captain's armband in the summer and has been proclaimed to be "back to his brilliant best" by The Athletic's James Pearce.

As the graph portrays, he's been superlative, and this rich vein of form could be City's undoing. True, he will possibly be faced against his toughest test as skipper, but the Dutchman will be confident that he can inspire a positive result.

5 LB – Kostas Tsimikas

Kostas Tsimikas celebrating for Liverpool…

With Robertson stuck in the medical room, Kostas Tsimikas will start his fourth Premier League match from five possible fixtures.

The Greek ace has been under fire this season but did bag two assists last time out against the Bees. That pinpoint creativity would be nice tomorrow.

6 DM – Alexis Mac Allister

harvey-elliott-alexis-mac-allister-liverpool-opinion

When Liverpool signed Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton & Hove Albion for £35m in the summer, it was universally agreed to be a bargain.

The Argentine 2022 World Cup winner has been deployed in the unnatural holding midfield position this season as Liverpool don't actually have a starring No. 6.

He'll play there against City, and the red half of Merseyside will hope that this immensely talented phenom will produce a good performance.

7 CM – Dominik Szoboszlai

Signed from RB Leipzig for £60m in the summer, Dominik Szoboszlai has won the hearts of the Liverpool faithful. All-encompassing in his midfield work; creative, ambitious, unflinching, tenacious, inspiring. He has it all.

Recharging the Anfield side's midfield after such a lifeless year was daunting, but the Hungary captain has been sensational, having completed 88% of his passes in the Premier League and averaged 2.3 key passes, 1.2 tackles and a whopping 7.3 ball recoveries per game, as per Sofascore.

8 CM – Curtis Jones

Curtis Jones celebrating during Liverpool vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

Ryan Gravenberch may well be fit again but Klopp will probably opt for the industrious Curtis Jones in the centre of the park, with the homegrown star having last played in the Premier League against Tottenham Hotspur in September, where he was contentiously sent off.

Remarking to have been "flying" this season prior to that dismissal – which has been over for several weeks; Jones has been injured of late – by Pearce, Jones ranks among the top 1% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, as per FBref.

His supreme crispness in possession will be paramount tomorrow, with Manchester City not too shabby with their ability to retain possession and suffocate opposition.

9 RW – Mohamed Salah

devyne-rensch-mohamed-salah-liverpool-opinion

If Liverpool secure the goods, then you wouldn't bet against Mohamed Salah playing a key part, with the 31-year-old Egyptian having posted ten goals and four assists from just 12 matches in the Premier League this season.

One of the division's greatest-ever players, Salah has scored six goals from his past eight league encounters against the Citizens, could he be the catalyst on a momentous, season-defining afternoon for his club?

10 LW – Luis Diaz

Liverpool winger Luis Diaz warming up.

Luis Diaz's Liverpool career has been marred by injury and the recent high-profile family situation, but he is an incredible player and will likely receive the nod ahead of the "lethal" Diogo Jota on the left wing, as the Portuguese was called by writer Leanne Prescott.

The 5 foot 10 Jota has scored eight goals across all competitions this season but does not boast the raw pace and power of his Colombian counterpart, who can stretch and frazzle the hosts down the left channel.

Healy's 21-ball half-century blows Ireland away

The Australia wicketkeeper smashed the fastest World T20 fifty to give Australia’s net run rate a massive fillip after their second win

The Report by Shashank Kishore11-Nov-2018Chances are it may have taken Australia longer to load their kits from the baggage carousel to the team bus than it took to see off Ireland’s small target at Providence Stadium. The enforcer was Alyssa Healy, who walloped a 21-ball half-century – the fastest in the tournament’s history and the second fastest in women’s T20Is – to raze down 94 in just 9.1 overs. The beauty lay in Healy’s brutality. Full tosses and long hops were gleefully accepted. But amid the muscle, there was also grace and elegance which she displayed in equal measure, while lofting the ball inside-out over extra cover. In the end, Ireland’s only takeaway was the experience of playing Australia only for the second time in four years. The result was another reminder of why teams like Ireland need more exposure and not just one qualifying tournament amid the jostle with Full Members for game time.International Cricket Council

Ireland’s best chance of competing was to bat first and put runs up against the three-time champions. Laura Delany called correctly and they finished the Powerplay 27 without loss. Then the big-match nerves failed Ireland as they lost 5 for 16, resulting in a breakdown they didn’t recover from.Ireland didn’t run well, and weren’t helped by poor umpiring calls either – like the controversial call by Langton Rusere to dock them five runs because Delany seemingly ran onto the ‘danger zone’. All this coupled with some tight, relentless Australian lines, resulting in no leeway. Ireland limped to 93 for 6 on the back of Kim Garth’s 24 at No. 7. It left open the prospect of a bruising chase. The struggle wasn’t just restricted to their batting, though. Lucy O’Reilly failed to control her late inswing to deliver as many as five wides in her opening over – the second of the innings. Then Ciara Metcalfe delivered a 12-run over with a mixture of short balls and full tosses, Isobel Joyce went for four boundaries in her first, and suddenly, Ireland were short of ideas as Australia wiped out 60 in just five overs en route a second win that gave their net run rate a massive fillip. The story of the match – as it was on the first of Sunday’s double-header – was the awarding of penalty runs for running on the pitch. In the 13th over of Ireland’s innings, Gaby Lewis was first warned for stepping onto the danger area, when she seemingly steered clear after taking a couple of steps to meet the ball.Off the next ball, Ireland were docked five points when umpire Rusere felt Delany had run mid-pitch. This seemed to have played on Lewis’ mind as she was out in the same over trying to run wide, in the process losing the extra yard to a direct hit to the bowler’s end from mid-off.Umpiring aside, Ireland weren’t also helped by injudicious shot selection. Twice in two overs, they had batters out attempting to scoop Ellyse Perry, only to not just play down the wrong lint but also get beaten by the skid off the pitch. Clare Shillington was the first to perish in this fashion after stroking 19 while Eimear Richardson followed suit in the next over, the 10th of the innings. Then Australia employed the spin choke with rookie legspinner Georgia Wareham clocking in three right overs, with Sophie Molineux – the left-arm spinner – at the other end to stifle the life out of Ireland. The result wasn’t really in doubt at any stage. It was only a matter of when.

Tabraiz Shamsi, Faf du Plessis keep Durban Heat at the bottom of the table

After the left-arm wristspinner’s twin strikes limited Heat to 154 for 6, the Paarl Rocks captain led the chase with an unbeaten 76

The Report by Deivarayan Muthu02-Dec-2018

Left-arm wristspinner Tabraiz Shamsi’s twin strikes and his captain Faf du Plessis’ well-modulated 76 not out off 48 balls fashioned a crucial win for Paarl Rocks and kept Durban Heat at the bottom of the points table. The game boiled down to the final over, but du Plessis’ clever manipulation of the field – his innings included eight hard-run twos – ensured Paarl were always in control of their chase of 155 on a two-paced pitch. The nine-wicket win meant Rocks remained in contention for the playoffs, while Heat were pushed to the brink after their fifth loss in six matches.Such a heavy defeat for Heat did not seem likely when they zoomed to 56 for 0 in the Powerplay. While the dropped Hashim Amla was carrying drinks after managing just 55 runs in five innings, his replacement Sarel Erwee teed off with four successive boundaries off left-arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin in the fifth over. Morne van Wyk too kept the scorecard ticking before seamer Grant Thomson had Erwee chopping an inducker onto his stumps for 32 off 22 balls.Shamsi then struck in the 10th over to pin van Wyk lbw with his stock ball that broke back in. The next five overs yielded only 23 runs for the loss of two further wickets. Shamsi was central to the squeeze, exploiting the early-morning moisture with his variations. He ended with 2 for 20 in his four overs on a day when no other bowler took more than one wicket.Khaya Zondo and Vernon Philander then added 49 in 4.3 overs to haul Heat from 105 for 5 to 154 for 6.Rocks had an early scare in their chase when opener Henry Davids retired hurt on 2 because of an adductor muscle strain, sustained while running a single. Ironically, the running between the wickets turned out to be the hallmark of the chase. There were as many as 17 doubles, including four on the trot in the 18th over.In the Powerplay, du Plessis and Aiden Markram matched each other shot for shot to take full toll of anything loose. Zimbabwe legspinner Brandon Mavuta then cut short the opening stand at 76 when he drew Markram out of the crease and had him stumped for 48 off 39 balls. Du Plessis, though, displayed greater confidence against Mavuta, taking 16 runs off 10 balls from him. He raised his fifty off 36 balls and coaxed Vaughn van Jaarsveld to run hard between the wickets too. They sealed victory with three consecutive fours, van Jaarsveld hitting the winning runs with a violent hoick over mid-on.Durban Heat, who are still mathematically in contention for the playoffs, will hope that Rashid Khan’s arrival – he missed the start of the tournament because of his stint in the T10 league – gives their campaign a leg-up.

Ranking David Moyes’ 10 worst signings at West Ham United

It’s fair to say David Moyes divides opinion in East London. Some West Ham fans love him for leading them to their first European trophy in decades after winning the Europa Conference League in 2022/23, and some just don’t rate him.

Regardless, he has done a good job of steadying the ship at a time when the club looked destined for the drop, and the 2023 summer transfer window looks like it has been a massive success. Edson Alvarez and Mohammed Kudus are two great deals, with the latter certainly starting to settle at the London Stadium.

It hasn’t always been smooth sailing for Moyes and West Ham in the transfer window, however. Football FanCast takes a look at the Scottish manager’s ten worst West Ham signings.

10 Patrice Evra (Free)

Free transfer, 2018

Veteran leftback Patrice Evra was signed in the summer of 2018 to bring his invaluable experience to the club. His time at Manchester United had proven he was one of the best in his position in the world, but he was known to be a little unpredictable.

By the time he joined West Ham, he had stopped caring. He may constantly be telling people how much he “loves this game”, but it’s clear he didn’t care for the club. Evra would make just five appearances for the Hammers.

Sir Alex Ferguson's last Man Utd XI – where are they now?

The final XI of Ferguson’s career have gone down very different routes over the past decade.

ByFreddie Taylor Oct 15, 2023

His contract expired the next summer and he left. After no satisfactory offers for his services were received, he decided to retire from football.

9 Joao Mario

Loan from Inter, 2018

It may have only been a loan, but Moyes’ signing of Joao Mario was hailed by many as a real coup. He was impressive during his time at Sporting CP and had secured a move to Inter.

Unfortunately for him, opportunities in Italy dried up and it was decided he had to go out on loan. West Ham were amongst a number of clubs looking to secure his signature, and in January 2018, he put pen to paper.

He made his debut just two days later, coming on as a substitute against Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup – a game West Ham would lose 2-0. After that, he never really made a mark. He did score in a 3-0 win against Southampton, but he returned to Inter the following summer after an underwhelming spell. He has since become a massive player for Benfica.

8 Alex Kral

Loan from Spartak Moscow, 2021

Following the huge success of the signing of Tomas Soucek, Moyes once again fancied a look at the Czechia national squad. This time he came across central midfielder Alex Kral, who had just signed for Russian side Spartak Moscow.

He wasn’t a goalscorer; in fact, he’s only scored a single league goal throughout his entire career, but he was a runner. West Ham signed him on loan with the option to make it permanent.

Kral would go on to make six appearances for the club before the loan ended. He’s still technically contracted to Spartak Moscow but has been on loan in Germany since his West Ham move, firstly with Schalke, and now with Union Berlin.

7 Jordan Hugill

£10m from Preston North End, 2018

West Ham have had some awful luck with strikers. In recent years they’ve had to deal with Simone Zaza, Enner Valencia and Mauro Zarate, just to name a few. Jordan Hugill has to be counted among them.

The Hammers paid £10m for his services, potentially predicting that they were going to go down and would need a solid Championship striker, which Hugill was at Preston North End. It was a move that infuriated fans, just when they needed someone to lead the line.

It’s not his fault he’s on this list, though. Hugill was given just 22 minutes throughout the entire second half of the 2017/18 season to prove to the fans that he was the man to lead them – an almost impossible task.

After numerous Championship loans, he’s now found a home at Rotherham United.

6 Nikola Vlasic

£34.5m from CSKA Moscow, 2021

Nikola Vlasic for West Ham.

This transfer just goes to show that one good international tournament does not a good player make. Vlasic impressed for Croatia at Euro 2020 and had a number of teams after him. West Ham finally got him for an undisclosed fee, thought to be around £34.5m once add-ons had been factored in.

Throughout his career, he had played regular football, and although he did have the opportunity to prove himself, he was never consistently in the first team. His first goal contribution came in the form of an assist in the Europa League, and his first goal came in the Premier League in a 4-1 win against Watford.

Vlasic was then sent out on loan to Torino, a move that the Italian club would make permanent in August 2023 for an undisclosed fee. Perhaps West Ham didn’t want the world to know how much money they lost on him.

5 Gianluca Scamacca

£35.5m from Sassuolo, 2022

West Ham United striker Gianluca Scamacca.

Young Italian forward Gianluca Scamacca came to West Ham with a big reputation. He was, and still is, one of Italy’s best young forwards. Since bursting onto the scene at Sassuolo, the hype began to generate, he just wouldn't live up to it at West Ham.

Injuries were the main reason he didn’t make it in east London, despite looking like someone who would love it there. He only scored eight goals in 27 appearances for the club, with a lot of them being as a substitute.

Both parties decided to call it quits after a single season. He’s now back in Italy with Atalanta and has gotten off to a fine start. Perhaps, like Sebastian Haller, he’ll be one that got away for West Ham.

4 Danny Ings

£15m from Aston Villa, 2023

West Ham striker Danny Ings.

Consistently scoring goals in the Premier League is a very hard thing to do, and Danny Ings deserves a lot of credit for doing just that, but at West Ham, it’s been disappointing. The form he found at Burnley and Southampton seems to have escaped him.

West Ham bought him for an initial £12m, which rose to £15m after avoiding relegation in the 2022/23 season. Ings played his part – he scored twice against Nottingham Forest to help secure top-flight football.

Without going as far as saying that Danny Ings has been a flop, he certainly has the ability to turn it around, he’s just unlikely to be given that chance. He’s still at West Ham, but they’re reportedly looking to move him on.

3 Flynn Downes

£12m from Swansea City, 2022

It's pretty heartbreaking to be putting Flynn Downes on this list. The midfielder is a massive West Ham fan, he’s living the dream he had as a young lad in playing for the club. Sadly, he hasn’t had much of a chance to represent them.

Downes made a name for himself with Swansea City in the Championship, and West Ham came knocking. A reported £12m fee was agreed, and he put pen to paper, just as any fan would.

He made 21 league appearances for the club he loves, and helped them to their first trophy in 43 years. If you’d have told him he’d do that at the start of his career, he’d have surely snapped your hands off.

He’s currently on loan at Southampton, and will no doubt be hoping he’s given another opportunity soon enough.

2 Maxwel Cornet

£17.5m from Burnley, 2022

West Ham United forward Maxwel Cornet.

Players need time, and Maxwel Cornet will surely get that, but his West Ham career has been underwhelming thus far. He signed in the summer of 2022 from Burnley for a fee thought to be around £17.5m, and has since failed to impress.

He’s the type of player that is always going to have moments. A piece of skill here, beating a player there – he just needs to do it more often. To be fair to Cornet, Moyes isn’t exactly known for letting his attacking players express themselves.

Cornet is perhaps best known for his controversial disallowed goal against Chelsea last season. VAR deemed Tomas Soucek’s very slight touch on Mendy to be a foul, and denied him what would have been his first and only league goal for West Ham.

1 Thilo Kehrer

£10.1m from Paris Saint-Germain, 2022

Thilo Kehrer

There is a bit of a running theme here; most of the players on this list just haven’t been given much of a shot. Moyes is an old-school manager, he knows his best XI and he sticks to it. It’s an important thing to do when you’re fighting at the bottom of the table more often than not. Kehrer is another player that’s happened to.

When the German centre-back made a big money move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2018, it was for a fee of around £32m. After four years at the club, West Ham signed him for £10.1m.

He was meant to be their centre-back for the future, and since he remains at the club, he still could be. He’s just fallen down the pecking order behind the likes of Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd.

Kehrer is now 27 years old, so he’s entering his prime as a defender. At some point, he’s going to want to be playing more regular football, whether that’s with West Ham or not.

The Premier League is harsh, most of Moyes’ signings at West Ham have actually proven to be very good deals – Jarrod Bowen and Jesse Lingard, for example.

Moyes knows the club inside-out, but the grass isn’t always greener.

Arsenal’s 2003/04 Invincibles squad – ranked

Arsenal's unbeaten Premier League season in 2003/04 gave that team the nickname, 'The Invincibles'. It's a feat that will likely never be matched again – at least in England, anyway.

In order to achieve something so remarkable, every single member of that squad must have been at their absolute best. Of course, goals and assists aren't everything, but they are pretty damn important.

Football FanCast breaks the squad down (of those with a minimum of ten appearances) in order of their goal contributions across the historic Premier League campaign.

Top 10 best games from Arsenal's Invincibles season

Football FanCast takes a look at the best games from their Invincible season.

ByAlex Roberts Dec 7, 2023 20 Jeremie Aliadiere 0 goals, 0 assists

Arsenal's other French forward, Jeremie Aliadiere mostly played in the FA Cup and League Cup during their Invincibles season. He only managed 10 Premier League appearances and didn't score once or get an assist, but to be fair to him, only three of those appearances were starts. If he had been given more of a chance, he would likely have contributed more.

Invincibles highlight: Starting as the Gunners came from behind to see off Liverpool at Anfield in early October, playing a part in Robert Pires' winner.

19 Martin Keown 0 goals, 0 assists

By the time the 2003/04 season came around, Martin Keown was very much in the twilight of his career. The old centre-back had been a loyal servant to the Gunners since 1993 when they re-signed the Hale End graduate from Everton. Just because he didn't feature much on the pitch, doesn't mean he didn't make a major contribution to the Invincibles season. His wealth of experience and leadership was likely invaluable for Wenger as the season went on.

Invincibles highlight: Begging Arsene Wenger to bring him on during the final game to earn a Premier League medal (or jumping over Ruud van Nistelrooy).

18 Gael Clichy 0 goals, 0 assists

French left-back Gael Clichy was signed that season, with Ashley Cole, one of the best in that position the Premier League had ever seen, ahead of him in the pecking order. The youngster was therefore not going to be given the chance to make much of an impact. Still, when called upon, Clichy proved he was more than capable of filling in for Cole after making 12 appearances throughout the campaign, and would make the position his own when his predecessor left for Chelsea.

Invincibles highlight: Becoming the youngest-ever Premier League medallist at 18.

17 Pascal Cygan 0 goals, 0 assists

Another member of Arsenal's French contingent, Pascal Cygan was only ever going to be a squad player for Wenger. With an incredibly solid defensive partnership of Kolo Toure and Sol Campbell ahead of him, it was going to take a miracle for Cygan to displace them. But, much like Clichy above, he was an incredibly reliable option who definitely played his part (18 times, to be exact) in this amazing season.

Invincibles highlight: Providing solid cover as Arsene Wenger was forced to shuffle his pack over the winter months.

16 Ray Parlour 0 goals, 0 assists

Arsenal legend Ray Parlour was another member of the squad who was approaching the end of an impressive career. Parlour's role was to do the dirty work that many of his counterparts avoided. In his 25 appearances, he got eight yellow cards. Like Keown, Wenger would have loved having such an experienced player at his disposal when needed, particularly when injuries bit.

Invincibles highlight: Captaining the side during Patrick Vieira's absence, including during the Gunners' derby victory over Spurs.

15 Jens Lehmann

It's obviously very harsh to judge a goalkeeper by goals and assists, but it has happened before. Jens Lehmann – a rare goalscorer himself – is without a doubt one of the best goalkeepers the Premier League has ever seen. The big angry German only conceded 26 goals during the 2003/04 Premier League campaign, keeping 15 clean sheets. Not only was he remarkable between the sticks, his never-say-die attitude rubbed off on his teammates as they chased records.

Invincibles highlight: Superbly denying Craig Bellamy during a tense 0-0 draw at Champions League-chasing Newcastle.

14 Lauren 0 goals, 1 assist

The first player on this list to get a goal or assist, Invincibles right-back Lauren played a pivotal role for Arsenal at the other end of the pitch. The Cameroonian is something of a forgotten man; he may not have had many overly explosive performances, but he was very consistent. Wenger knew exactly what he was going to get from Lauren, and he was the type of player needed to win titles.

Invincibles highlight: For a player as understated as Lauren, it has to be his one assist – a cross put away by Thierry Henry after the Newcastle defence failed to deal with it.

13 Sol Campbell 1 goal, 1 assist

Tottenham Hotspur fans may hate him, but Arsenal fans love him. When Sol Campbell swapped White Hart Lane for Highbury, he immediately became the lynchpin of the Gunners' defence. He was a rock at the back throughout his 35 appearances, but he also popped up with the odd goal, evidenced by the fact he got one in the 2003/04 season. His only goal was the opener against Aston Villa in their 2-0 victory in August.

Invincibles highlight: It has to be his consistency. Only ever missing through injury or suspension, Campbell played the full 90 whenever possible. It is hard to imagine the Invincibles achieving what they did without him.

12 Kolo Toure 1 goal, 1 assist

Kolo Toure may have made a massive two more appearances than defensive partner Campbell, but he didn't get any more goals or assists. Just like Campbell though, he was a man mountain at the back, playing a huge role in Arsenal's season. If it weren't for the Ivorian's calm defensive play, it's unlikely they'd have won the title, never mind gone the season undefeated. He also dropped into midfield when required.

Invincibles highlight: Just take a look at his highlights reel. Enough said.

11 Ashley Cole 0 goals, 3 assists

Ashley Cole may have tarnished his Arsenal legacy by leaving to join London rivals Chelsea two years later, but in 2003/04, he was as good as they got at left-back. The position has evolved since then, and while Cole was more than capable of evolving with it, this campaign shows exactly what he could do defensively. Back then, three assists was a very healthy goal-contribution tally for a full-back.

Invincibles highlight: Dramatic late header in the Champions League aside, his best moment in the league arguably came on the final day, when he won the penalty that drew Arsenal level in their historic comeback win over Leicester City.
