Bowlers, Ihsanullah lead Afghanistan to series win

Afghanistan bowlers bundled Ireland out for 124 before Ihsanullah’s unbeaten 57 sealed the three-ODI series 2-1 with an eight-wicket win

Ireland opted to bat upon winning the toss on a tired pitch, but that was about the only thing they did right as their batsmen surrendered meekly against a disciplined Afghanistan attack and were shot out for 124. After that, not even Tim Murtagh, with eight wickets in the last two matches, could save them the ignominy of a heavy defeat as the visitors hurtled to their target to clinch the series 2-1.The moth-eaten adage you miss, I hit couldn’t have been reinforced stronger as five Ireland batsmen fell lbw to a very straight line of attack, largely due to their penchant for wanting to work the ball square off their pads, three of those off Rashid Khan’s staple googly. Their troubles, however, started much sooner, between overs nine and 11 to be specific.Till then, they had done well to recover from the early loss of Paul Stirling, who fell caught behind for two in his 100th ODI, poking at a length ball from Aftab Alam that moved away fractionally. William Porterfield and Andy Balbirnie looked set before the former became the first of six Ireland batsmen to cross double figures and squander the start. Looking to drive Alam, he was early into the shot, offering a simple catch to Asghar Afghan at mid-off, who fumbled twice before latching on. Porterfield fell for a painstaking 34-ball 14, followed by Niall O’ Brien, who was slightly unlucky to be adjudged lbw off Gulbadin Naib to one that looked to be going over the stumps. When Balbirnie, the in-form batsman with two fifties in the series, nicked Gulbadin to the wicketkeeper four balls later, Ireland had suddenly been reduced to 39 for 4 in the blink of an eye.Curiously, the next 31 balls was the most productive phase for Ireland as Kevin O’Brien and Simi Singh counter-attacked. The 15th over yielded 13 runs – comfortably the most in the innings – as both batsmen used the pull shot to good effect against some wayward bowling from Gulbadin. But the next over saw the introduction of Rashid and he struck off the last ball the over, trapping Kevin O’Brien plumb in front as the batsman looked to work a googly towards square leg, and missed. Simi fell to the same mode of dismissal in Rashid’s next over, leaving Ireland reeling at 72 for six. Gary Wilson and Andy McBrine then had a 37-run stand, also the best of the Ireland innings, but that it came so late was part of the problem rather than the solution. And when captain Asghar pinned Wilson in front for only his second ODI scalp, the end was imminent as Rashid and Mohammad Nabi polished off the tail.In response, Afghanistan appeared in a hurry to get the runs and lost Mohammad Shahzad early in the process. Shahzad’s poor tour continued as his upper cut off Boyd Rankin landed in the lap of third man. But that hardly made any difference to Afghanistan’s gung-ho approach, as opener Ihsanullah, who had replaced Hazratullah Zazai, and Rahmat Shah continued to attack, taking Afghanistan to 53 in quick time, before the latter fell lbw to Murtagh at the stroke of lunch. Ihsanullah was unperturbed by the break in play and returned to complete his third ODI fifty in the company of Hashmatullah Shahidi, who struck 34, as the duo took Afghanistan home.

“It’s disgraceful…" – Pundit reacts to West Ham update on David Moyes

After a solid start, West Ham United have struggled for form as of late with defeats against Everton and Brentford summing up a month to forget for David Moyes’ side. Their initial form means that they’re still clear of any relegation troubles, but the Hammers will want to get back on track as soon as possible to ensure that remains the case.

The defeat on Saturday will have left Moyes the most frustrated, given that his side took a 2-1 lead before capitulating and ending the day on the wrong end of a 3-2 loss. On a run to forget, one particular pundit has delivered his verdict on the managerial situation at the club.

David Moyes contract latest

As things stand, Moyes’ contract is set to come to an end next summer when West Ham may well be looking to start a new chapter in their history, with reports suggesting that West Ham have put contract talks with Moyes on hold until later in the season. If this is to be it for the Scot at the London Stadium, then he will undoubtedly receive the farewell of a hero, as when Moyes came in, survival and mid-table comforts were the expectations.

Years later, he has more than exceeded those by winning a European trophy and overseeing Europa League qualification.

With plenty of credit in the bank, pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor believes that Moyes should be offered a new contract at West Ham. After hearing the recent update, the former Aston Villa striker told Football Insider:

“I think they have to give him a new contract. It’s disgraceful if they don’t. He’s just won them their first trophy in many years, they’re in and around the top seven fighting – I don’t see why he wouldn’t get a new deal.

“The West Ham fans were complaining at the start of the season, but then they picked up and they look like a good team. I think they have to give him a new deal. With what he’s done for the club, it’s huge, he deserves one.”

West Ham manager David Moyes.

The ball could yet be in Moyes’ court when it comes to renewing his current West Ham deal. The veteran manager has built the Hammers into a side capable of not only staying up but a side looking to challenge for the European places in the Premier League. Now in a position to welcome talents as impressive as Mohammed Kudus, too, Moyes could be leaving the club at arguably the highest point of their recent history.

If West Ham fail to negotiate a new deal or decide against one with their current boss, then they will be left with no choice but to go on the hunt for someone to lead a new era at the club. As things stand, it remains to be seen just who that new appointment could be, with a lot left to change until the end of the current campaign. For now, West Ham may just be focused on ensuring that Moyes continues his job over the coming months.

Journalist shares new Everton takeover development involving 777 Partners

On the pitch, things are finally heading in the right direction for Everton. Sean Dyche's side have lost just once in their last four games, and that came at Anfield – a place not many can say they've picked up three points. Meanwhile, sandwiched between that Anfield result were victories in the Premier League over Bournemouth and West Ham United, before the Toffees added the cherry on top by easing past Burnley to reach the last eight of the Carabao Cup.

What makes their run all the more impressive is the fact that all three of their recent wins have come with clean sheets – if that defensive form continues, Everton look on course for comfortable survival. The good news doesn't stop there, either, with a positive update emerging about 777 Partners takeover.

Everton takeover latest

Away from the action taking place at Goodison Park, Everton haven't exactly had the smoothes last few weeks. The Premier League's financial fair play investigation into Everton could lead to disastrous consequences with a potential 12-point deduction on the cards or transfer sanctions.

That said, the news has seemingly failed to scare off new owners. According to Matt Hughes of The Daily Mail, via Goodison News, 777 Partners have disclosed to the Premier League how they will complete their takeover of Everton. The report revealed that the new owners will use their own resources to fund the £500m purchase of the Merseyside club instead of seeking funding. The Premier League's questions have reportedly centred around the sufficiency of 777 Partners' funding, who remain on course to complete their purchase.

Everton fans can breathe a sigh of relief over the deal, especially if 777 Partners are self-funded, having been riddled with loans of over £350m under Farhad Moshiri. However, Hughes did state that 777 Partners' habit of making late payments in areas of their sports business has led to scepticism over their ability to follow up on their promises.

How Dyche could benefit from the takeover

Everton manager Sean Dyche.

The reports that 777 Partners will avoid loans and instead use their own resources to fund their deal to purchase Everton can only be good news if the takeover is completed. The last thing those at Goodison Park need is more loans to pay off and more financial insecurity, especially amid a financial fair play investigation.

From Dyche's perspective, he will be hoping to feel the benefits of the reported takeover during the January transfer window. Winter reinforcements can make or break a season, and depending on just where Everton are at that stage, they may well need important additions through the door.

It remains to be seen who the Toffees will attempt to bring in, but as long as any deals ensure their top-flight status for another season, then those in the blue half of Merseyside will be happy. For now, the feeling will be relief for Everton fans, with their takeover on course for completion.

Afghanistan pick four spinners for Asia Cup

Left-arm spinner Sharafuddin Ashraf returns to the 17-man squad for the first time in six months

Afghanistan have picked three specialist spinners – a legspinner, a mystery spinner and a left-arm spinner – in their squad of 17 for the Asia Cup to be held in the UAE later this month.Sharafuddin Ashraf, the left-arm spinner, is among just two new additions – uncapped wicketkeeper Munir Ahmad being the other – to the squad that beat Ireland in the ODI series last week. Fast bowler Dawlat Zadran misses out.Sharafuddin has featured in 14 ODIs so far, the last of which came at the World Cup Qualifiers in March this year. He has also played six T20Is. In all, he has 17 top-flight international wickets. This is a maiden call-up for Munir Ahmad, who has been picked as a second wicketkeeper, an understudy to Mohammad Shahzad, the hard-hitting opening batsman.Ashraf aside, Afghanistan’s spin arsenal boasts of Rashid and Mujeeb, who have emerged richer in experience through county stints in England earlier this year apart from featuring in the IPL. Both of them also featured in the country’s maiden Test in India. They can also call upon a fourth option in offspinner allrounder Mohammad Nabi if needed. The squad is captained by Asghar Afghan, who along with Shahzad, Javed Ahmadi, Ihshanullah Jannat, Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi makes up the top order. In addition to Nabi, they have a second allrounder in Gulbadin Naib, capable of bowling handy seam-ups. Aftab Alam, Sayed Shirzad and Wafadar constitute their pace attack.Squad for Asia Cup: Mohammad Shahzad, Javed Ahmadi, Asghar Afghan(c), Rahmat Shah, Samiullah Shenwari, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Najibullah Zadran, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Aftab Alam, Ihsanullah Janat, Sayed Shirzad, Wafadar, Munir Ahmad Kakar

Ratcliffe could ditch Varane with Man Utd swoop for £31m "leader"

There is change afoot at Manchester United and it could finally bring some stability to the club which has been tormented by off-the-field issues recently.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is edging closer to taking sporting control once his 25% stake is ratified by the Glazers and with chief executive Richard Arnold set to depart the club after a period of 16 years, along with director of football John Murtough, who is also expected to leave in the near future.

These changes in the United hierarchy could give Erik ten Hag some respite following a poor start to the season which has seen the Red Devils crash out of the EFL Cup while winning just one of their opening four Champions League matches.

Their form in the Premier League has hardly been much better, as the club currently occupy sixth place in the table after winning just seven of their first 12 matches.

Nice owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

The international break arrived at precisely the right time for the Dutchman to regroup and focus ahead of a gruelling schedule up to the festive season and this could make or break their campaign.

With the January transfer window fast approaching, Ten Hag may look to bolster his squad with one or two arrivals, as several areas of his team need improvement, and fast.

Man United transfer news – centre-back hunt ramps up

Having endured somewhat of an underwhelming summer transfer window, the former Ajax boss will be hoping January will be more productive.

According to Italian outlet Il Romanista, the Old Trafford side are currently eyeing a move for AS Roma centre-back Gianluca Mancini in a bid to improve their faltering defence.

Manchester United target Gianluca Mancini in action for Roma.

The Serie A side could potentially demand a transfer fee of around €35m (£31m) for the 27-year-old and this is a fee which is certainly affordable for the club.

He is at the peak of his career and Ten Hag may splash the cash to lure the defender to Manchester in the new year, especially as his side have conceded 30 goals across just 18 matches this term.

With Ratcliffe looking to make some big changes around the club in the near future, he could even move on some of the current players at the club in order to make way for more reliable options.

Raphael Varane could be one of these players, especially as the Frenchman is attracting attention from foreign shores.

Why Varane could leave Man Utd

The 30-year-old has started just six of United’s 18 matches this season, scoring once in the process, and with the defender turning 31 next April, he isn’t exactly going to get much better.

While he brings a winning mentality to the current squad, having won the Champions League four times along with the World Cup in 2018, he simply can't be relied on anymore.

Since joining the Old Trafford side in 2021, he has missed 38 matches due to injury, and these niggling issues seem to be catching up with him.

The former Real Madrid defender has 18 months left on his current contract and January could be the final time that Ten Hag will be able to properly cash in on him and this could be a tempting proposition.

Indeed, there are some clubs from Saudi Arabia who are keen on signing the defender according to TEAMtalk, and they could offer a fee which is too good to turn down.

Receiving a bumper fee for the player could allow Ten Hag the opportunity to use this in the transfer window and make a concrete offer for Mancini.

Gianluca Mancini’s statistics this season

Whilst Roma are currently struggling in Serie A this season, occupying seventh place having won just five of their opening 12 matches, Mancini ranks highly across the squad in various performance indicators.

The defender currently ranks third in the squad for accurate passes per game (46.8) along with ranking first for accurate long passes (3.3), third for interceptions (1.1) and fourth for clearances (1.5) per game, indicating that he has been one of their better performers this term.

He was also recently called up to the Italian national squad following an injury to Alessandro Bastoni suffered an injury, and he could add to his 11 caps.

He was hailed as a “leader” by writer Wayne Girard earlier this year, and he has become a mainstay at the heart of the Roma defence and his recent performances have obviously stood out and attracted attention from elsewhere.

Gianluca Mancini’s style of play

According to WhoScored, Mancini’s greatest strength is his concentration and while tackling is deemed a weakness, his style of play could allow him to link up well with Lisandro Martínez when the Argentinian returns to the first team after his injury woes.

Indeed, the 27-year-old is adept with the ball at his feet as he likes to dribble on a regular basis and his passing statistics for Roma this term that were mentioned previously suggest he could fit right into Ten Hag’s tactical system.

Gianluca Mancini

His physicality could also be a big advantage to the Dutchman too, as Mancino has won 1.7 aerial duels in the Italian top flight this term – a success rate of 63% – while he has also demonstrated his strength on the floor, winning 3.9 ground duels during the current season.

Alongside Martinez, Mancini could form a solid partnership as both are equally strong in one-on-one encounters, while their passing abilities are wonderful. This could allow the pair to move the ball forward as often as possible, starting attacks from the back.

There is no doubt that the Dutchman needs to vastly improve his defensive options. Jonny Evans was the only centre-back he signed during the summer, and it shows just how poor the club were in the summer transfer window.

With this new takeover news involving Ratcliffe, it could mean that January will be a different story entirely, and he may allow Ten Hag to pursue players who will make an instant impression in the first team squad.

Mancini may not be a promising youngster, but he is a solid professional who has showcased his ability in Serie A, and he would be a welcome addition to the team.

Offspinner Raisibe Ntozakhe suspended for illegal bowling action

South Africa’s preparations for next month’s Women’s World T20 have been struck a major blow after offspinner Raisibe Ntozakhe was found to have an illegal bowling action and was suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect. The ICC made the announcement on the same day that Ntozakhe was named in South Africa’s squad of 15 for the tournament.Ntozakhe was reported during the ODI against West Indies on September 16 in Barbados and had undergone an independent assessment of her bowling action on September 28 at the University of Pretoria. The assessment revealed that all of her deliveries exceeded the 15 degrees level of tolerance permitted under the regulations. In accordance with ICC regulations, Ntozakhe’s international suspension will also be recognised and enforced by all National Cricket Federations for domestic cricket events played in their own jurisdiction. However, she may still be able to bowl in domestic cricket events played under the auspices of Cricket South Africa, and can apply for a re-assessment after modifying her bowling action.CSA has taken immediate steps to work with Ntozakhe’s remodelling of her action, and she will be based at the CSA Centre of Excellence, working with High Performance manager Vincent Barnes.*”The timing of this issue for Raisibe and for our World T20 squad is clearly inopportune but we need to deal with it,” CSA chief executive Thabang Moroe said. “We will work hard to remedy her action and have her retested as soon as practically possible. We are fortunate to have invested in an ICC accredited laboratory in South Africa and this will certainly make a quick turnaround possible.”South Africa’s national selection panel is mulling possible replacement options for the Women’s World T20, and an announcement is expected to be made shortly. Should CSA name a replacement player prior to the start of the Women’s World T20 support period on 2 November 2018, it will not require approval from the Event Technical Committee.
