Shakib, Tamim fire Bangladesh to their biggest ODI win

Bangladesh’s four seniormost cricketers came to the fore to deliver them a 163-run win – their biggest in ODIs – over Sri Lanka in Mirpur

The Report by Mohammad Isam19-Jan-2018
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAFP

Bangladesh’s four seniormost cricketers came to the fore to deliver them a 163-run win – their biggest in ODIs – over Sri Lanka in Mirpur. It was a wretched performance from Sri Lanka all around. In the face of a daunting Bangladesh total of 320 for 7, their batsmen lasted just 32.2 overs. And their bowlers hardly tested Bangladesh’s line-up.Each of Bangladesh’s batting core came good. Tamim Iqbal made 84 off 102 balls. Shakib struck an aggressive 67 at more than a run a ball. And Mushfiqur Rahim blasted 62. All of that meant Bangladesh managed good partnerships through their innings. Their first three pairs, involving Tamim, Anamul Haque, Shakib and Mushfiqur, each strung together 50-plus partnerships, only the second time that their first four batsmen have made such a productive start.Tamim and Anamul began by putting on 71 for the first wicket, before Shakib joined Tamim for a 99-run stand. It laid a solid foundation as a 300-plus total looked imminent very early. It wasn’t all smooth sailing, however. Anamul survived three chances – two catches and a stumping – on his way to 35. Tamim was slow off his blocks, but opened up after notching up a second successive fifty. Tamim took a particular liking to the short stuff dished out at him. Not even getting struck on the helmet twice could deter him. In all, he struck seven fours and two straight sixes, both off successive Gunaratne deliveries.Shakib was more forthcoming against the short ball, hammering boundaries through midwicket and square-leg. He was equally effective in pinching the singles with well-timed pull shots.Mushfiqur made sure to keep up the good work during his 57-run third-wicket stand with Shakib. After Shakib’s dismissal, he kept Bangladesh ticking with a 42-ball half-century that pushed the total towards the 300 mark.Cameos from Mahmudullah and Sabbir Rahman capped off a strong batting performance, although Sri Lanka reined in the home team with three quick wickets in the last five overs. The penultimate over from Thisara Perera was especially impressive, with Perera consistently finding the lengths he was looking for. But Sabbir and Mohammad Saifuddin made up for some of the lost ground in a 19-run last over that had Lakmal giving away three fours and a six.Sri Lanka had no such flourish when they replied. Mashrafe Mortaza shut out any chances of a brisk start in a fine opening spell. Kusal Perera fell in the third over, and by the end of the first Powerplay, they had lost both their openers and only three fours had come off the bat.Mashrafe, who bowled a first spell of eight overs, had Tharanga caught at mid-off before sending back Kusal Mendis in similar fashion in the 14th over.Dickwella, who came in for the injured Angelo Mathews, was bowled by Mustafizur Rahman in the 19th over, before Shakib’s brilliance on the field sent Sri Lanka plummeting further – a direct hit from mid-off catching Dinesh Chandimal short of his crease in the 25th over.Shakib removed Gunaratne and Wanindu Hasaranga off successive balls in the next over. Thisara Perera unleashed a burst that was all-too-short, lashing Shakib for two fours and as many sixes in the 30th over, but fell later in the same over, caught at long-off attempting another ambitious stroke.Rubel Hossain ended the procession with wickets in successive overs as Sri Lanka folded in the 33rd over. He finished with two wickets, as did Mashrafe, while Shakib took three wickets to go with his 67.

Nós tivemos a lesão do Bruno Melo.

Everton: Dyche must unleash "outstanding" gem who’s pocketed Saka

Everton manager Sean Dyche will have used the first international pause of the season as a chance to reset and forge ahead with his side's Premier League efforts after a disappointing start.

Suffering three successive defeats before an entertaining 2-2 draw against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane handed the Toffees their first goals and point of the campaign, a daunting clash against title-chasing Arsenal now awaits.

How much did Everton spend this summer?

After falling by the wayside last season and struggling against the threat of relegation, Everton sacked Frank Lampard in January and replaced him with former Burnley boss Dyche, who successfully manufactured an escape from danger and preserved top-flight status on a nail-biting final day, defeating Bournemouth 1-0.

While a summer of additions has been concluded, there has been little progress on the pitch thus far – though centre-forward Beto has been described as "fantastic" by The Athletic's Patrick Boyland for his start to life in England, having already found the net once in his two outings.

Dyche will hope to use the draw against Sheffield United as a launchpad, and while Arsenal are one of the most formidable outfits in Europe right now, the Toffees will be emboldened by their 1-0 victory over Mikel Arteta's side in the corresponding fixture last year.

In fact, Everton have won four of the past six matches against the Gunners and are unbeaten in five clashes at Goodison Park, and this could now be the opportune moment for the Blues to kickstart their season. That said, they will need to be better defensively.

Ashley Young, aged 38, has started all four of Everton's Premier League matches this season after joining in the summer, but as Boyland noted, the defence has been "very vulnerable".

Against Arsenal, perhaps it's time for Vitaliy Mykolenko to earn his first league start of the season, especially after his display against England last week, producing a solid performance to help negate the threat of Bukayo Saka.

How good is Vitaliy Mykolenko?

Indeed, analyst Liam Tharme remarked that the prodigious winger got "walloped" by the Ukrainian last Saturday, and while he produced an unforgiving defensive display, it will have caught Dyche's attention ahead of the forthcoming club clash.

vitaliy-mykolenko-everton-newcastle-united-dyche-relegation

Mykolenko, who was once hailed as "outstanding" by Lampard, made five clearances, two tackles and an interception, as per Sofascore, also winning four of his six duels on the day, and while Saka was still lively and elegant, he failed to produce his most effective display for the Three Lions despite hitting the woodwork. After all, this was England's Player of the Year struggling to get into the game.

Journalist Paul Brown doesn't believe that Dyche "trusts" the 24-year-old Everton defender, and while this may be the case, his physicality and robustness might be crucial in nullifying the abundant qualities of Saka, who has already posted two goals and assists apiece for Arsenal this term.

While the £58k-per-week left-back might have some questionable defensive tendencies, there's no question of his tenacity and application, ranking among the top 2% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for clearances, the top 4% for blocks and the top 10% for interceptions per 90, as per FBref.

While Dyche clearly doesn't hold Mykolenko in the highest regard, he could be an important component against Arsenal and their star man Saka and be the “hero” once again, as has been said by Joe Thomas.

It might even prove to be a masterstroke to deploy the 5 foot 11 defender to the starting fold on Sunday to stifle Saka's threat and set Everton on their way.

Lyon awaits chance to shine on slow South Africa surfaces

The Australia offspinner is preparing to play a more central role in the forthcoming Test series, particularly because the hosts have requested slower surfaces to counter the spectre of the “big three” quicks

Nathan Lyon is preparing to play a more central role in the forthcoming Test series than on either of his past two visits to South Africa – not only because he has grown enormously as a bowler since then, but also because the hosts have requested slower surfaces that take some turn to counter the spectre of Australia’s “big three” quicks. As a former member of Adelaide Oval’s ground staff, Lyon is well and truly acquainted with the fact that Australia are famed for denying ever asking for specific pitch conditions from home surfaces, in contrast to the trend for pitches made to the home side’s order in other parts of the world. The extremes of this state of affairs were witnessed in South Africa’s previous Test series – against India – when the Wanderers strip in Johannesburg was so spiteful as to have the batsman Dean Elgar suggesting the match should have been called off. This time around, the pitches are not expected to offer that much in the way of assistance for seamers, given how South Africa noted the way Australia have struggled on slower surfaces in recent times, whether it be a sluggish seaming surface in England in 2015 or spinning decks in Asia for many years. Either way, Lyon said the visitors were now used to adapting to a landscape where their opponents have the ground staff at their disposal.”It is what it is these days, you see it all around the world,” Lyon said in Durban. “In Australia we don’t do it, I know that for a fact. I know all the curators in Australia would tell us where to go if we asked to suggest to take all the grass off it to make it spin more.”Both teams are going to have to play on it, they’re a quality team and we’re just going to have to assess the conditions and go from there.”It’s the same for both sides, not like its changing between innings. I’m expecting flatter wickets than they had for the India series, especially with the bowling attacks floating around, they’re probably the best in the world, in my eyes, going head to head, so it’s going to be one hell of a series, that’s for sure.”Given the pace bowling resources of the two sides, Lyon said he was expecting the cricket to be somewhat more vibrant than the attritional brand seen during the recent Ashes series. “If you look at both sides, there’s going to be times in the game where patience is going to play a massive role, but there’s going to be times where both bowling attacks are going at their batters and their bowlers are going to be going at our batters,” Lyon said.”It’s going to be big moments in the game where you’re going to assess them and try to either come out on top in those big moments or try to minimise the damage in those big moments. It’s just about identifying those things as quickly as possible. One thing Australia will do is pay South Africa a lot of respect. They are one hell of a side, so it’s going to be a great series, but it’s just about trying to identify those big moments in a big series and either minimise them or maximise them when they’re going well for us.”Getty Images

Lyon’s confidence in Australia’s ability to play the “big moments” well has been enhanced by the way the team has rebuilt since losing to South Africa at home in 2016-17. “I think the whole Australian side is in a better place,” Lyon said.”There’s been a big change since the last time South Africa were out in Australia and you’ve got to give them credit, they totally outplayed us in our own conditions, which didn’t really go down well with myself personally or the whole side. I know we’ve spoken about coming over here and really enjoyed coming over here in the last couple of series I’ve been over here, had some success, but we’re not going to take that for granted. We’re not expecting automatic success.”My bowling doesn’t change too much, I am very confident in my stock ball at the moment and in my consistency, so I am not going to be changing too much,” Lyon said. “It is going to be a great challenge for myself coming up against some of the best batters in the world. To be honest with you I think the best batsmen face me every day in the nets. Bowling to Smithy every day, the number one batsman in the world, trying to take you down.”In 2011, Lyon was playing in only his second series after his debut in Sri Lanka. He duly lived through the traumas of Australia’s violent defeat in Cape Town, then played a vital role opposite the emergent Pat Cummins in Johannesburg with the ball, before being the most nervous man at the Wanderers as the teenaged Cummins clumped the winning runs to square the series.”The way he worked over a couple of the best batsmen in the world… he had a pretty amazing Test debut,” Lyon said. “But Pat is a totally different bowler now. He’s smarter but he’s just as quick. He uses his bouncer a lot more efficiently.”In my eyes, Pat is one of the best bowlers in the world. He’s quick and he hits that length but he is an X-factor as well. His whole game as an athletic player in the field and his batting is going from strength to strength. He is working his way up to being the complete player in my eyes. It’s exciting times for Pat.”

Liverpool must unleash £140k-p/w "pressing monster"

Liverpool return to Premier League action this afternoon, with Jurgen Klopp's side making the trip to Molineux to face a Wolverhampton Wanderers side that will look to disrupt the Reds revival.

Last season, Liverpool were awful and failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in seven seasons, just a year on from having reached the final of the competition.

However, there is optimism anew for the Anfield side this year, with Klopp and stand-in sporting director Jorg Schmadtke comprehensively rebuilding a midfield past its sell-by date, with early signs promising indeed.

With ten points from 12, Liverpool will be looking to keep on the heels of pace-setters and domineering champions Manchester City, but to do so, a stubborn Wolves side must be dispatched, which will not be simple.

What is the Liverpool team news?

Liverpool will be without captain Virgil van Dijk – who is completing a two-match suspension for dissent – and his vice, Trent Alexander-Arnold who is sidelined with a hamstring injury.

naby-keita-liverpool-jurgen-klopp-premier-league

However, £34m deadline day signing Ryan Gravenberch will likely make his debut, though the multi-functional midfielder will be unlikely to partner Thiago Alcantara in the centre, who is not quite fit after a lengthy layoff.

Ibrahima Konate is available after injury, as is striker Darwin Nunez, though the latter might not make the starting line-up due to travel back from South America following the international break; the same could be said for Alexis Mac Allister and Luis Diaz, though it is probable that they will be included.

How good is Diogo Jota?

Should Nunez – whom Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa said was suffering with "muscular difficulties" on Tuesday and was consequently hooked at half-time against Ecuador – fail to make the starting teamsheet despite Klopp's assurance that he is fit, Diogo Jota has to make the line-up against his former side.

Signing from Wolves for £41m in the summer of 2020, Jota arrived at Anfield with an impressive return of 44 goals and 19 assists from 131 displays for the Old Gold, with former teammate Conor Coady hailing him a "sensational footballer".

The 26-year-old has been a dynamic attacking component for Klopp's side and a typifier of the way the Reds look to play, with Pep Lijnders describing him as a "pressing monster".

As per FBref, the Portugal star – who scored twice and provided an assist against Luxembourg last week – ranks among the top 4% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals and the top 6% for assists per 90, with his cutting edge perhaps crucial against a Gary O'Neill-led Wolves outfit that will seek to stubbornly prevent the Reds from clicking into gear.

The £140k-per-week phenom has also tasted victory across all five of his outings against his former outfit, posting a goal and assist apiece.

Diogo-Jota

This season, the 5 foot 10 gem scored against Bournemouth but has been used as a substitute across his past two appearances, though after finishing the 2022/23 season strong, scoring seven times and registering one assist from the final nine fixtures, he will be raring for an opportunity to prove his worth once again.

Klopp and co will be confident that a fourth successive victory can be achieved at Molineux, but with Jota deployed up front, the incisiveness necessary for success will be on the pitch, and Liverpool will continue their renaissance.

Toby Roland-Jones out for season with recurrence of stress fracture

Toby Roland-Jones has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2018 season with a recurrence of a stress fracture in his back

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Apr-2018Toby Roland-Jones has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2018 season with a recurrence of a stress fracture in his back, a devastating blow for a player who missed this winter’s Ashes through injury, and would have been a strong contender for a recall against Pakistan at Lord’s next month.Roland-Jones suffered soreness in his back during Middlesex’s Championship game against Derbyshire last week, which ruled him out of bowling in the second half of the game. Scans have subsequently confirmed a recurrence of the stress fracture he suffered last September. He is now set to undergo an extended period of rehabilitation.”Everybody at the club is devastated for Toby and our immediate thoughts are with him, and that he makes a full recovery,” Angus Fraser, Middlesex’s director of cricket, said.”I know how frustrating it can be to miss a summer of cricket through injury, having been through this myself on two occasions. The ray of light is that you do recover and you do come back stronger and even more determined.”Toby’s absence is obviously a set-back for Middlesex and he will be missed for more than just his bowling. He is a fantastic presence in the dressing room and has been one of the finest bowlers in the country in the past six or seven years.”Yet one player’s misfortune is another player’s opportunity and we have a number of young, hungry bowlers on our staff. They now have an opportunity to show their potential and to fill the hole created by Toby’s misfortune. I have every confidence they are up to this challenge.”Roland-Jones has impressed in his England career to date, with 17 wickets in four Tests, including a best of 5 for 57 on debut against South Africa at The Oval last August. His combination of accuracy and bounce from a tall action would have been a prime asset for England on Australia’s wickets last winter, and he had been inked in as England’s first-choice third seamer behind James Anderson and Stuart Broad until he first suffered the injury during Middlesex’s victory over Lancashire at Lord’s in September.
