Wolves: Lopetegui Could Now Sign "Monster" £17m-rated Moutinho Replacement

Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly eyeing Real Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez, as Julen Lopetegui seeks a midfield rebuild this summer.

The Spaniard bid farewell to Portuguese duo Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho this window, and will now look to find reinforcements to fill the void left by the former Molineux maestros.

Could Wolves sign Guido Rodriguez?

As reported by journalist Cesar Luis Merlo this week, Wolves are eyeing the LaLiga gem, who remains under contract at Betis until next summer.

Merlo confirmed the Old Gold’s interest in the 29-year-old midfielder, claiming that negotiations are ‘underway’ between the two clubs, over the player valued around £17m by FootballTransfers.

While he added that the deal isn’t close to being finalised, the Midlands outfit's interest comes at a time when Betis may prefer a sale than for the player to depart as a free agent next year.

How good is Guido Rodriguez?

It’s integral for Lopetegui to identify a sufficient replacement for the departed duo Neves and Moutinho, who were key figures in Wolves’ journey in the Premier League.

The Spaniard could land the perfect solution to the two exits in obtaining Rodriguez, who was identified as a “monster” by analyst Marcus Bring for his exploits in LaLiga.

Signed by Betis from Mexican side America back in the 2020 winter window, the Argentine could be on the move this summer, with a move to the Premier League a possibility.

Heralded for his defensive contributions, the midfielder could be the ideal replacement for Moutinho, who closed the lid on his five-year stay in the Midlands at the expiration of his contract at the end of last season.

While the long-serving 36-year-old veteran was primarily deployed in central midfield rather than the deeper areas that Rodriguez inhabits in Spain, the averages recorded by the Argentine last term suggested that he could be a sufficient ball-playing replacement.

As per FBref, the 29-year-old maintained a pass completion rate of 86.7% in LaLiga last season, as well as making an average of 4.17 final third passes per 90 to showcase his assured presence in the central channel.

Moutinho recorded similar averages to the World Cup winner, maintaining a completion rate of 80.4% in the Premier League and averaging 5.31 final third passes per 90.

Their numbers signify that the Betis enforcer could be a like-for-like trade for Lopetegui’s side, as a player with similar efficiency in distribution.

The most prominent area of Rodriguez’s game is his defensive contributions, averaging a monstrous 3.60 tackles per 90 in LaLiga, ranking him in the top 2% of midfielders in the league, via FBref.

Moutinho fell short of the 29-year-old machine in such areas, averaging 2.58 tackles for Wolves, as well as recording 0.91 interceptions to the Betis star’s 1.32 per 90.

Possessing the innate balance between defensive and distribution strengths in the engine room, Lopetegui could fill the vacancy left by the Portuguese veteran in the middle of the park.

It’s expected that the Midlands side will have to make additional sales to make such moves in the window, despite accumulating around £80m in departures so far, only time will tell if the deal will prevail.

Buttler gives Lancashire immediate lift

Jos Buttler led the way with 59 off 39 balls as Lancashire began their NatWest T20 Blast programme with a 52-run win against Durham at Chester-le-Street.Put in by Durham’s new T20 captain, Paul Coughlin, Lancashire cleared the rope seven times in their 192 for 6, to which Durham replied with 140 for 7.Buttler hit two of the sixes and there was a brace for opener Karl Brown as he and Arron Lilley smashed 65 off four overs after only four runs came off the first two.In the second over Liam Livingstone sliced a drive off Weighell for Ryan Pringle to hold a low catch at backward point. But Lancashire’s experiment of sending in off-spinner Lilley at No 3 paid off as he took three boundaries off Chris Rushworth’s second over, including two lofted over the off-side field.Brown repeated the dose off Weighell and when Coughlin came on Brown picked up his second ball over mid-wicket for six. That was followed by two leg-side wides and a waist-high full toss, which was hit for four and signalled no-ball. Lilley cross-batted a six over long-on and the over cost 22.Durham needed a slice of luck to break the stand as Usman Arshad’s first ball was driven firmly back by Lilley and deflected into the stumps by the bowler, running out Brown for 35.Lilley went for a straight six off the next ball and was caught just inside the rope by Adam Hickey. When Coughlin returned Buttler drove his second ball for a straight six as he dominated a stand of 92 in ten overs with Dane Vilas. The England one-day wicketkeeper also proved adept at working the ball into space for twos, while a precise cut bisected deep gully and backward point. His only improvisation came when he reverse paddled a full toss over gully for his fourth four to reach 50 off 31 balls.Having hit Ryan Pringle’s second ball over extra cover for a big six, Buttler was then tied down by the off-spinner before skying a return catch. Weighell also picked up two late wickets to finish with three for 28. as Lancashire stalled slightly with 29 off four overs before Ryan McLaren took 14 off the last, bowled by Arshad.Durham sent in left-hander Hickey to open with Graham Clark, who raised hopes by taking 14 off the second over, bowled by Saqib Mahmood, including a six over backward point. But wickets fell in each of the next three overs. Hickey fell lbw to Tom Bailey, Michael Richardson skied a catch to third man and Clark was run out for 23 attempting a risky single. When Jack Burnham was bowled by Jordan Clark to make it 51 for four it was left to Paul Collingwood to keep Durham afloat. But he lacked support and Lancashire’s use of three spinners helped them to stay in control.Collingwood holed out at deep mid-wicket for 48 off Jordan Clark, who finished with three for 26.

Hearts Could Sign Dream Frenkie Kent Partner At Tynecastle

Heart of Midlothian will play either Crusaders or Rosenborg in their Europa Conference League third-round qualifying tie as they eye a spot in the group stages for the second season in a row.

Steven Naismith will need to continue his recent activity in the transfer market if they aim to have a better season than 2022/23, where they finished fourth in the Premiership and failed to even reach a semifinal of either domestic cup competition.

The next couple of weeks will be crucial, and the manager will be hoping his squad will be a bit more padded out by the time they face St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park in seven days.

How many players have Hearts signed?

There have been three new arrivals at Tynecastle so far. Goalkeeper Michael McGovern, defender Frankie Kent and midfielder Calem Nieuwenhof have all been tasked with improving the club during 2023/24 and the latter two in particular could be key players for the Jambos.

There will surely be more signings before the end of August, with defender James Hill, who spent last season on loan at the Gorgie outfit from AFC Bournemouth, potentially looking for another stint in Edinburgh.

He said: “It would definitely be in consideration because everyone at Hearts has been amazing. They’ve made me feel at home. I’m not out of place here. I feel like a massive part of this squad. When you have that belief, the sky is the limit.

“The group at Hearts is incredible and the standard of this league is a surprise when other players step in because there is such quality.”

Could he be signing number four? It wouldn’t be a surprise if Naismith managed to make this happen in the coming weeks.

How good is James Hill?

Another centre-back could be extremely useful, especially with the talents that Hill possess, and he could slot in alongside new signing Kent with ease.

Frankie Kent

The former Peterborough defender became the latest player to sign for the club, having spent all of his career either in League One or League Two in England.

He impressed last term for The Posh, ranking first for clearances (3.7), fourth for interceptions (1.1) and second for accurate passes (45) per game, indicating that he not only exudes a solid defensive approach, but is suited to passing out comfortably from the back.

Hill also shone during his spell north of the border last term, ranking second for clearances (4.3) and first for interceptions (1.5) per game in the Premiership, and although he didn’t complete as many accurate passes per game (30.4) as Kent, he more than makes up for it with his tenacious nature, averaging 1.8 tackles per game.

Hailed as a “success story” by journalist Gregg Evans in 2022, the 6-foot youngster could form a dream defensive partnership with Kent next term which could allow Hearts to become a tougher side to score goals against.

With Kent being comfortable in his passing ability and Hill showing a dogged resilience to make sure no defender gets through him, the duo could be wonderful together as Naismith chases a third-place finish and potential group-stage football in Europe.

'Team understands how to take the country forward' – du Plessis

Faf du Plessis has said that transformation targets do not stop South Africa from fielding their best teams

Faf du Plessis is comfortable with the selection process in South African cricket and believes transformation targets are not stopping them from fielding their best teams. The South Africa Test captain was responding to fresh criticism by Graeme Pollock of a system that requires the national side to field a minimum average of six players of colour (including two black Africans) over the course of a season.Speaking at an event in London earlier this month, Pollock said South Africa would become a “middle of the road” Test team in future if the transformation policy remained in place. Du Plessis said he had not heard “the context in which Pollock was speaking” so it would be “unfair” to respond to Pollock personally but said that the team understood the policy.”We as a team understand what we need to do and how we need to take the country forward,” he said. “We get on with our business as usual. We play the best team and we try and win every game we play.”In 2016 the South African government banned four major sports – cricket, rugby, athletics and netball – from bidding for or hosting international events for not having done enough in terms of transformation. Each sport signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the sports ministry, the terms of which remain private. CSA has, however, made public the targets they decided to implement at national level and after exceeding them in the 2016-17 summer the ban was lifted.”The major thing is the problem with the politics and interference with the selection of players,” Pollock had originally said. “It’s affecting the performance of the side – they don’t put the 11 best players on the field. It’s never going to change. As South Africans, we’ve got to accept that South Africa are going to be middle of the road in their future Test cricket.”He took issue with the domestic set-up, where targets are applicable per match and require each franchise and provincial team to field six players of colour including three black Africans. Pollock said this created an inherently weak structure which produced below-par cricketers of all races.”You are going to pick a guy like Heino Kuhn, the opening batsman, who got a couple of hundreds in first-class cricket. He’s not good enough to play Test cricket. The guys are playing in a bad standard of first-class cricket in South Africa because of the politics and interference in selection.”A week after Pollock’s comments were first published, however, his spokesperson Basil O’Hagan issued a statement which claimed the quotes were “totally misconstrued”, issued an apology and said Pollock is in favour of transformation.”Graeme extends his sincerest apologies to CSA Board and the South African cricketing public for the manner in which his comments at recent function in London were totally misconstrued. Graeme fully supports the endeavours of the transformation process,” O’Hagan said. When asked by ESPNcricinfo which part of Pollock’s original statement was misconstrued, O’Hagan said he would not respond to every paragraph of the original article but called it “incorrect” as a whole. O’Hagan also said Pollock “maintains transformation is the way to correct decades of oppression of black South Africans and marginalisation of black cricketers.”The clarification did not prevent strong criticism from former Test player and current Cobras coach Ashwell Prince in the where Prince detailed his own struggles across a two-decade long career.”Pollock’s comments most definitely struck a nerve. Not just with myself, but it seems the overwhelming majority of South Africans. Quite frankly, as a former Protea, one has reached the point where you simply just cannot sit back and allow people with these kind of mindsets to keep feeding the world this kind of rubbish and just let it be,” Prince said.”People who were disadvantaged under the previous political regime simply have to be given opportunities which in the past were reserved for a privileged minority.”South Africa will have five players of colour in their side for the third Test against England at The Oval with Kagiso Rabada’s return following his suspension. They fielded four at Trent Bridge with JP Duminy dropped, but with the targets being assessed over a whole season whether they have been met or not for 2017-18 will not be known until after the home summer against Bangladesh, India and Australia.

Chelsea Could Replace Mount With "Electric" £40m Gem

Chelsea could be set to secure yet another summer signing as Mauricio Pochettino aims to strengthen his side ahead of the 2023/24 season.

What's the latest on Kudus to Chelsea?

The Stamford Bridge side have been linked recently with a move for Ajax starlet, Mohammed Kudus as Pochettino aims to bolster his attacking options, and new a development has occurred with regard to a potential move.

Journalist Rudy Galetti tweeted: “#Chelsea had first contacts with #Ajax for Mohammed #Kudus.

“Understand that #CFC have verbally agreed the personal terms with the Ghanaian player: now it’s up to clubs to find an agreement.

“Other 2 English teams have showed a concrete interest in him: evolving situation.”

It would be a major statement of intent should they lure the youngster away from Ajax to England, especially considering teams such as Manchester United and Arsenal are showing interest and they have Champions League football to look forward to next term.

The 22-year-old will only cost the Blues around £40m, which given their recent extravagant activity in the transfer market, it could be a bargain.

Could Mohammed Kudus replace Mason Mount?

Attacking midfielder Mason Mount departed Chelsea this summer, joining Manchester United in a deal which could be worth £60m, becoming one of the several players to leave the club.

Since making his debut under Frank Lampard back in 2019, Mount made nearly 200 appearances for the Blues and registered 70 goal contributions in that time period, a solid return.

Last season featured just three goals and six assists across 35 games and with one year left on his deal, Chelsea clearly felt £60m was a decent enough figure to let him depart.

mohammed-kudus-arsenal-ajax-transfer-gossip-edu-arteta-martin-odegaard-de-bruyne

Kudus has all the attributes to replace Mount in the Chelsea squad, and given that he is younger, he has the potential to surpass his achievements.

The Ajax starlet was among one of the finest attacking midfielders when compared to his positional peers over the previous 365 days, ranking in the top 2% for non-penalty goals per 90 (0.55), top 1% for successful take ons per 90 (4.57) and top 4% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90 (6.27) and this clearly indicates that he is a major threat in the opposition penalty area.

In comparison, Mount registered just 0.13 non-penalty goals, 0.86 successful take ons and 3.32 touches in the attacking penalty area per 90 during the same period, suggesting that Kudus could even be a major upgrade on the Englishman.

Not only did Kudus register six goal contributions in the Champions League last season – four goals and two assists – but he demonstrated his attacking qualities on the biggest stage of them all – the World Cup.

He scored twice in the competition while also succeeding with 3.3 dribbles per game – a success rate of 71% – and the youngster ranked first across the whole Ghana squad for these metrics. It wasn’t enough to prevent them from falling at the first hurdle, however, the world got a glimpse of his outstanding talents.

It’s no wonder that talent scout Jacek Kulig lauded the player as “electric” and should he carry on the form which saw him explode in the Champions League and the World Cup, he could be a stunning success at Chelsea as the man to replace Mount.

Reece best sends Derbyshire soaring

Luis Reece left his mark on his former county with a T20 best unbeaten 97 from 55 balls as Derbyshire beat Lancashire by 35 runs in the NatWest Blast game at Derby.Reece hit 10 fours and four sixes and with Daryn Smit who made 42 from 20 balls added 77 in seven overs to take Derbyshire to an imposing 211 for 5. Liam Livingstone threatened to chase that down by smashing five sixes in an 18-ball 44 and Karl Brown made 41 but the Derbyshire bowlers hit back to end a run of two defeats in the North Group as Lancashire finished well short on 176 for 9.The visitors had elected to bowl first but Reece struck the ball cleanly from the start, driving Ryan McLaren straight for six and pulling him for four as 59 came from the first five overs.Reece dispatched Jordan Clark over the midwicket boundary and drove Matt Parkinson for a third six before Stephen Parry removed the dangerous Wayne Madsen who missed a reverse sweep in the ninth over.Derbyshire were well placed at 103 for 3 at the halfway point of the innings and although Gary Wilson was stumped charging at Parry, Reece drove Parkinson for his fourth six after reaching 50 from 26 balls. Arron Lilley also had Alex Hughes stumped in the 14th over but Lancashire’s bowlers could not exert any sustained pressure and Smit joined Reece to take Derbyshire past 200.Both batsmen improvised well with Smit plundering three consecutive fours from Junaid Khan as 62 came from the last six overs to leave Lancashire facing a tough chase under the lights.Livingstone moved into overdrive from the off, pulling and cutting Matt Henry for three sixes and two fours in the second over which cost 26 and he clubbed Hardus Viljoen over the ropes at midwicket from the last ball of the third.Imran Tahir was driven for a fifth six but Madsen’s offspin ended the onslaught when Livingstone skied a drive to long on where Hughes took a well judged catch. Brown picked up the baton by pulling Madsen and Tahir for sixes before he played on to Matt Critchley and the legspinner Derbyshire hopes soaring in his next over when Jos Butler failed to clear long off.Dane Vilas was run out when he was stranded at the same end as Lilley who kept Lancashire believing by driving Tahir for six but after Steven Croft drilled the South African high over the long-off boundary, Henry returned to york him. When Lilley drove Ben Cotton to cover in the next over, Lancashire were fading fast and Derbyshire comfortably closed out the game.

Warner, Smith, Lyon set up thrilling finish

Nathan Lyon claimed six wickets to help bowl Bangladesh out for 221, before David Warner and Steven Smith added an unbeaten 81 runs for the third wicket in Australia’s chase of 265

The Report by Brydon Coverdale29-Aug-2017Australia 217 and 109 for 2 (Warner 75*, Smith 25*) need another 156 runs to beat Bangladesh 260 and 221 (Tamim 78, Lyon 6-82)

Isam: Bangladesh off kilter after Smith reprieve

An Asian pitch offering variable bounce. A target in excess of 250. An opponent full of self-belief and ready for a historic victory. This was the scenario that faced Australia on the third afternoon in Mirpur. It called for leadership from Australia’s two senior batsmen and by stumps, David Warner and Steven Smith had shown enough of that to give their side plenty of hope. Work remained, but Australia went to bed with ample self-belief of their own.It was another day of fluctuating fortunes. Bangladesh began 88 runs in front with nine wickets in hand and before long Australia were down a bowler, Josh Hazlewood having left the field with a sore left side. He would not return for the rest of the innings. There was a half-century from Tamim Iqbal – his second of his 50th Test – and a fighting 41 from Mushfiqur Rahim. But there was also a lower-order collapse of the last five wickets for 35, which kept Australia in the game.Nathan Lyon was responsible for much of Australia’s fightback, his 6 for 82 the fourth-best analysis of his Test career. He found turn and sharp bounce from the pitch, which simultaneously dragged Australia back into the contest while also sending a worrying message to their batsmen. But chasing 265, Australia worked their way into a good position at stumps, on 109 for 2, with Warner on 75, Smith on 25, and a further 156 runs required.David Warner struck a counter-attacking fifty•Getty Images

The surface was far from poor, neither was their work easy. The threat from Bangladesh’s spinners was always there, and accounted for Matt Renshaw, who was lbw for 5 to Mehidy Hasan’s straight ball, and Usman Khawaja, whose miserable Asian run continued when on 1 he swept Shakib Al Hasan and top-edged a catch to deep square leg. At 28 for 2, Bangladesh were firmly on top; by stumps less so.Warner scored briskly, using his feet on occasions and punishing the bad balls that were offered up. He was given a chance on 14 when his thick edge off Shakib was missed by Soumya Sarkar at slip, and he made Bangladesh pay for the missed opportunity. By stumps, Warner had plundered 11 fours and one six, and the close of play came at a good time for Bangladesh, who must regroup overnight.Quick stats

1 – Five-wicket haul for Nathan Lyon in the second innings of a Test in Asia . This is his first five-for in 15 innings. The closest he had come was when he took 4 for 53 against India in Pune earlier this year. Lyon has 5 five-wicket hauls and 70 wickets in Asia from 31 innings

246 – Highest score for Australia in the 4th innings of a Test in Asia since 2007. In nine previous opportunities they have lost on eight occasions and drawn the game once. Australia need 264 to win the match against Bangladesh

14.62 – Average of Usman Khawaja in Asia from nine innings. His highest score is 26. However Khawaja’s average in Australia is 63.73

6 – Instances of Tamim Iqbal scoring two half centuries in Tests. Tamim has made six fifties in his last seven innings across all formats . He has scored 507 runs at an average of 72.42

Bangladesh had started the day in a good position, though a couple of early wickets to Lyon gave Australia hope – nightwatchman Taijul Islam was lbw and Imrul Kayes edged to slip a delivery that bounced sharply and turned. But Tamim remained, and found a useful ally, compiling a 68-run partnership with Mushfiqur that prevented a collapse and ensured Australia’s target would be challenging.Tamim scored strongly behind square and brought up his half-century from his 109th delivery when he slashed behind point for four off Ashton Agar’s first ball of the day. But as in the first innings, Tamim fell in the seventies, this time for 78 when his gloves kissed a snorting short ball from Pat Cummins that flew through to Matthew Wade, who took the overhead chance.Mushfiqur had sent a message early in his innings by getting off the mark with a lofted four over mid-on off Lyon, and he followed in Lyon’s next over with a six in a similar region. Curiously, though, they were his only boundaries, as he settled into a more sedate rhythm, before being run-out for 41 in unfortunate fashion, backing up when Sabbir Rahman’s fierce straight drive clipped Lyon’s fingers on the way through to the non-striker’s stumps.Already Lyon had accounted for Bangladesh’s other most dangerous batsman, Shakib, who was well caught by Cummins at deep cover when he advanced to lift over the top.Agar chipped in with the wicket of Nasir Hossain, who under-edged and was sharply taken by Wade for a duck, and Sabbir followed in the next over when he was given out caught at short leg off Lyon for 22. Strangely, Sabbir chose not to ask for a review despite replays suggesting the ball had touched neither bat nor gloves, and had bounced up to Peter Handscomb off pad alone.Lyon finished with the wickets of Shafiul Islam, sharply caught by Handscomb low to the ground at short leg, and Mehidy, who had made a breezy 26 when he skied a chance to Khawaja at deep square leg. It was Lyon’s best second-innings performance in a Test match in Asia, and could yet prove to have been a match-winning one.
