Liverpool are looking to the summer transfer window to improve their squad after a disappointing campaign last season and now a new update has emerged on a potential transfer target.
What's the latest on Liverpool's interest in Robin Koch?
According to 90min, Liverpool are one of many Premier League clubs interested in signing Leeds United centre-back Robin Koch this summer.
As per the report, both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have already held talks with the recently relegated player's representatives, whilst Brentford, Newcastle United and Liverpool are also named as interested parties.
It was claimed by BILD that Koch has a relegation clause in his contract that means he could be available on a free transfer, however, 90min reports that sources have denied that this is the case – with Football Insider previously revealing a potential asking price of around £15m.
Would Robin Koch be a good fit for Liverpool?
Whilst Jurgen Klopp has made no secret of his desire to drastically improve the Liverpool squad this summer following a failure to maintain their high standards both domestically and in Europe last season, the top priority has been to bolster the midfield depth.
The Reds have already signed Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton and Hove Albion, whilst they are also reportedly prioritising a deal for OGC Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram, but there is also definitely room for improvement in the defensive set-up.
Joel Matip is entering the last year of his contract at the club, whilst Virgil van Dijk will be turning 32 years old before Premier League football returns in August, which has prompted links to talented defenders Joska Gvardiol and Micky van de Ven.
Having said that, a move for Koch would be unlikely to improve upon the defensive options already at Klopp's disposal next season with the Leeds United dud playing a part in Leeds' troubling decline which ultimately resulted in relegation for the West Yorkshire club.
No other team in the Premier League conceded more goals (78) than Leeds over the 38-game campaign, which doesn't exactly inspire confidence in their defenders to step up in a highly competitive team in the top flight.
When comparing Koch's output with Van Dijk, Matip, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez last season, the German defender failed to outperform any of the Liverpool first-teamers in a number of attributes including pass completion (77.1%), take-on success (33.3%) and shot-creating actions (0.43), as per FBref.
He did, however, outperform them in tackles won (30), blocks (44), interceptions (43) and clearances (152), but this only further demonstrates that Leeds defenders were more under pressure from opponents and exposed to much more of the ball than Liverpool's back-line.
The 26-year-old liability has been the recipient of criticism for his performances in the business end of last season, with YouTuber Conor McGilligan slamming Koch for a poor performance against Fulham:
"[Max] Wober came in and did okay, was probably you know, head and shoulders above Koch who was horrific."
"Can't pass the ball at the minute. Was struggling with defensive headers, even when he's towering over the tallest Fulham attacker – which even in the first half was probably Harry Wilson at about five foot nine."
"Robin Koch is having an absolute shocker now and when I'm looking at men to step up right now, I'm looking at someone like him, he doesn't look bothered."
With that being said, it won't be a major priority for new sporting director Jorg Schmadtke to strengthen their defensive options this summer unless there was a massive opportunity to improve upon the current options in the squad, so it seems unlikely that Koch will make a move to Merseyside.
Steven Smith has come out in praise of his team, particularly Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc, who pulled off an unlikely victory on the final day at the MCG
Brydon Coverdale at the MCG30-Dec-2016Nobody turns up to day five of a Test anymore. Well, hardly anybody. At the Gabba: 2593 showed up, with free entry all day. At the MCG: 6189 – though more flooded in after tea when Cricket Australia threw open the gates. And yet day five was when both Tests sprung dramatically and unexpectedly to life. The end result was that in Brisbane, Australia nearly lost the unlosable Test, while in Melbourne they won the unwinnable.Even Steven Smith turned up to the MCG on day five thinking a result was unlikely. Possible, yes, but improbable. After all, rain had washed out nearly half of days one, two and four, and Pakistan had piled on 443 in their first innings, across three days. “If we can get a lead of 150-ish then maybe we can have a crack and see how we go,” Smith said on ABC Radio on the fifth morning. “Funnier things have happened in the game of cricket.”He might not have expected it, but Smith’s words could hardly have been more prophetic. In the first session, Smith and Mitchell Starc provided outstanding entertainment for the small crowd. Starc struck seven sixes, the most for any player in a Test innings at the MCG, and Australia amassed 624, the highest total ever in a Test at the venue. In the end, Smith gave himself a little extra room to manoeuvre, declaring 181 in front.Australia’s golden run continued when Josh Hazlewood struck in the second over of Pakistan’s second innings, justifying Smith’s declaration timing – Pakistan had to bat for a nervy four-over period before lunch. Everything continued to fall into place from there: Nathan Lyon – whose consistency was questioned by Smith on the fourth evening – ran through the middle order, and the fast men finished the job after tea.Australia had won by an innings, in a Test in which Pakistan had made 443 batting first, and in which Australia did not even begin to bat until after lunch on day three. In a Test in which rain wreaked havoc. After the match, Smith could hardly believe that Australia would fly to Sydney for the third Test having already wrapped up the series with a 2-0 lead.’We want a clean sweep in Sydney, and we need to continue to improve in every aspect’•Cricket Australia/Getty Images
“That was a pretty amazing Test match and a great one to be a part of,” Smith said. “Coming here this morning, lots of people would have had their doubts that this could happen. Everyone was always staring down the barrel of a draw, really. It was phenomenal the way we could turn things around, give ourselves a chance and take that chance when it came. I’m really proud, and I think it says Test cricket is alive and going really well.”I thought Starcy was incredible. I thought he batted incredibly. He broke the record for the most sixes at the MCG, and hit the ball incredibly cleanly to give us an opportunity to get 180 and have the overs that we did at them today. It was pretty special. To come out and do what we did – we always thought if we could get three or four wickets, when we got the ball reversing we’d be in for a show.”A lot of credit has got to go to Nathan Lyon. I thought he bowled beautifully this afternoon. He mixed up his seam. He bowled a lot of cross-seam balls today, which I guess put a bit of doubt in the Pakistan batters’ minds. He came up with the crucial wickets to get us in a good position for when the ball started to reverse. And then Starcy did what Starcy’s done for a while and was world-class.”Smith’s praise for Lyon was particularly notable after his tepid support of the offspinner on the fourth evening, when he declined to back him as a certain starter for the Sydney Test. Lyon had taken 1 for 115 from 23 overs in the first innings, but showed on day five why he has been Australia’s most successful Test offspinner of all time.He collected 3 for 33 in Pakistan’s second innings, importantly claiming the wickets of the two most senior members of the side: Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq. He also had Asad Shafiq brilliantly caught at short leg by Peter Handscomb shortly before tea, ending a ten-over partnership with Azhar Ali that Smith believed was the turning point for Australia.”I thought when we broke the Azhar-Shafiq partnership, the catch that Petey took at bat-pad, I thought we’re in for a good show here,” Smith said. “The ball was starting to tail and it was about to get pretty difficult for the batters to start. Everything just sort of worked to plan. It was one of those days.”The victory means Australia have now won three consecutive Tests since the nadir of their loss to South Africa in Hobart, after which the selectors made sweeping changes to the side. Not all of those changes have been successful – No. 6 batsman Nic Maddinson has now been axed for the Sydney Test, and wicketkeeper Matthew Wade is yet to make a batting contribution – but Smith believes the wins will give his young team confidence.”I think it can give you that belief to know that you’re never out of the game or you can pull a win out of your hat from nowhere,” he said. “It was quite remarkable the way we were able to do that today. Everything just went to plan. It was just one of those days. I’m just incredibly pleased and hopefully the guys can take a lot of confidence out of how they’ve played this week.”We’re still a work in progress. We’re a young team. I’m proud of the boys. We’ve played some very good cricket in the last couple of weeks, to win three Test matches and three one-day matches on the bounce has been outstanding. But we want a clean sweep in Sydney, and we need to continue to improve in every aspect. We’ve got to grow and get better each and every day. If we do that hopefully we can get to where we want to get to.”

Chelsea’s frontline could take a completely new shape next season.
Joao Felix, Kai Havertz, and Mason Mount are all unlikely to play at Stamford Bridge come August.
Meanwhile, the club has already completed the transfer of Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig, whilst edging closer to the signing of Nicolas Jackson.
Another reinforcement linked to the west London outfit is Lautaro Martinez.
What’s the latest on Lautaro Martinez to Chelsea?
According to The Express (via The Chelsea Chronicle), the Inter man wants to sign for the Blues and work under Mauricio Pochettino.
This outlet also revealed Martinez is one of the west Londoners' prime candidates to replenish its attack and that he could cost up to £60m.
Reputable journalist Dean Jones recently told GIVEMESPORT that the hierarchy is a big fan of the Argentinian and said: "So with Lautaro, there are people within the club that really like him and have done for quite some time. As of last week, there hadn't been any actual contact for Lautaro, but obviously, that can now change now that the season's done for him."
How can Chelsea line up next season?
The 48-cap international has been in unstoppable form for the Nerazzurri this year, having registered 39 goal involvements in 57 appearances.
He played a starring role in the side that came third in Serie A, made it to the Champions League final and won the Coppa Italia.
The World Cup winner has forged an impressive goalscoring record but is also an indispensable cog in offensive sequences. He ranks within the best 15% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for progressive passes, shot-creating actions, assists and total shots per 90.
But he also meaningfully contributes to the defensive effort, residing in the highest 6% for blocks and interceptions per 90.
Lionel Messi has applauded his compatriot's quality and said: "He's spectacular. He has impressive qualities. You could tell he was going to be a great player and he is showing that.
"He's very strong, really good one on one, scores a lot of goals and in the area he fights with anyone, holds it up, he can turn, scrap to win it all on his own. He's very complete."
Martinez could link up with Nicolas Jackson next term, whose move to Chelsea is on the verge of completion.
Nicolas Jackson Chelsea
The forward was Villareal’s top scorer in La Liga last season with 12 goals and sits within the top 19% for successful take-ons and non-penalty goals per 90.
Throughout his time in Italy, Martinez has become accustomed to playing with a second striker, predominantly with Romelu Lukaku, and he could develop a similar relationship with Jackson.

South Africa’s newest Test cap Duanne Olivier’s 11-wicket match haul helped Knights regain the top spot in the Sunfoil Series, with a 121-run win over Warriors in Bloemfontein. Olivier also remains the leading wicket-taker in the competition, 13 ahead of his nearest challenger, team-mate Marchant de Lange, who took five wickets in the match. The pace pair’s performance came after Knights piled on 431 in the first innings, built on Rudi Second’s 151. Second, who is also a keeper, now lies fifth on the run-charts and has put himself in prime position to travel as a reserve glovesman, should South Africa take one to New Zealand. Second and Rilee Rossouw shared a third-wicket stand of 118. Rossouw scored 83, but Simon Harmer’s 4 for 90 ensured Knights did not top 500.In reply, Warriors were in trouble at 159 for 7. A 119-run eighth-wicket stand between Harmer and Sisanda Magala saved them from the follow-on. Both batsmen scored half-centuries, before Olivier removed them. Oliver and de Lange shared all 10 wickets in Warriors’ first innings, which ended on 299.After taking a 132-run lead, Knights were sloppy in the second innings and lost wickets frequently. Second top-scored with 37 as Knights were bowled out for 189, setting Warriors a gettable target of 322 with more than a day remaining. Warriors closed out the third day on 73 for 3, 249 runs behind, but the target proved too big. With only Lesiba Ngoepe crossing 50, Warriors were bowled out for 200. Despite the loss, they remain in contention for the title in fourth position, 14.58 points behind table-toppers Knights. In Centurion, Cobras’ stirring second-half-of-the-season comeback continued as they beat Titans by nine wickets. The victory has lifted them from last place and put them ahead of Lions, and they are 16.52 points behind Knights.Titans chose to bat first and were looking solid after openers Aiden Markram and Dean Elgar put on 86. Both batsmen were dismissed off consecutive balls by Tsepo Moreki, which triggered a collapse. From 86 for no loss, Titans lost all 10 wickets for 109 runs to be dismissed for 195. Heinrich Klaasen brought some respectability to the scorecard with 52. Wickets were shared among all four of Cobras’ frontliners, with Moreki the most successful with 3 for 37.Cobras’ replay began with Rowan Richards dismissing the openers cheaply before David Wiese got rid of Stiaan van Zyl to leave Cobras on 37 for 3. But a combination of old and new put them in a position to take the advantage. Justin Ontong and Jason Smith put on 148 for the fourth wicket. Ontong brought up his 25th first-class century, and when he was dismissed, Cobras were well ahead on 285 for 6. They added 41 more for the last four wickets. Wiese claimed a five-for, but could not prevent Cobras from taking a 131-run first innings lead.Markram and Heino Kuhn, who opened in the second innings, started well again and shared a 61-run partnership, but Titans’ top-order collapsed for the second time as they lost five wickets for 30 runs. Klaasen again scored a half-century, and it saved them from an innings defeat, but only just. Rory Kleinveldt rolled back the years and finished with 5 for 45 as Titans were bowled out for 168. It left Cobras with just 38 to win, which they did with nine wickets in hand.
An update has emerged on Celtic and the possibility of Wilfred Ndidi arriving at Parkhead in the summer transfer window…
What’s the latest on Wilfred Ndidi to Celtic?
According to Football Scotland, the Nigerian international is not a ‘serious’ target for the Scottish Premiership side ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.
The report claims that the club are not actively pursuing a deal to sign the Leicester City enforcer, who worked with Brendan Rodgers during their time together in England, despite having been linked with an interest in acquiring his services.
It states, however, that the Glasgow giants are in the market to bring a defensive midfielder to Paradise before the deadline, as they had been working on targets prior to Ange Postecoglou’s departure.
The Daily Record recently reported that the club have been scouting Gwangju stopper Ho-yeon Jeong and the youngster could be an alternative to the now-Championship star.
Would Ho-yeon Jeong be a good signing for Celtic?
Rodgers could forget all about Ndidi by securing a swoop for the 22-year-old enforcer as his form in 2022 indicates that the talent is there for him to be an excellent signing.
Gwangju earned promotion from K League 2 last year and Jeong played a significant role in their success with his impressive displays across the middle of the park.
He averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.94 across 36 appearances and offered quality on both sides of the game.
The 22-year-old showcased his defensive attributes with 4.9 duels won per game with a success rate of 54%.
Ndidi, on the other hand, averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.75 in 27 Premier League matches for Leicester last season, and came out on top in 4.1 battles per outing with a success rate of 55%.
Leicester midfielder Wilfred Ndidi.
These statistics suggest that the "elite player" – as described by journalist John Bennett – and the South Korean battler could offer a similar level of defensive protection, along with efficiency, in front of the back four if he can translate his form over to Scotland.
However, the £75k-per-week Foxes powerhouse is not as adept in possession. Ndidi created 0.1 chances per game and completed 84% of his attempted passes for his club last term.
Meanwhile, Jeong averaged 0.8 key passes per outing and registered a pass completion rate of 88% in 2022, which suggests that the Gwangju tank would be able to provide his teammates with more opportunities in front of goal while also being more reliable with the ball at his feet.
It is difficult to compare their statistics to any of the current Celtic squad as Postecoglou's 4-3-3 system did not employ a defensive midfielder, while Rodgers' preferred 4-2-3-1 set-up could have a specialist number six in one of the two deep-lying positions in the middle of the park.
The Hoops are in the market for a holding player in midfield to fill that role and Jeong could be an exceptional alternative to Ndidi based on his performances for Gwangju last season.

Glasgow Rangers endured a disappointing 2022/23 campaign as they failed to lift a single piece of silverware domestically or in European competitions.
The Light Blues finished second in the Scottish Premiership and were knocked out of every cup that they competed in, which has led to a summer refresh by using the transfer market.
Michael Beale has moved quickly to secure six new signings ahead of the 2023/24 season. Sam Lammers, Abdallah Sima, Kieran Dowell, Dujon Sterling, Jack Butland, and Cyriel Dessers have officially joined the club.
However, there could be further fresh faces through the door before the end of the window and one player who has been linked with the Scottish giants this summer is Barcelona midfielder Pablo Torre, who joined the Catalan side for £4m amid interest from Rangers last year.
Who did Pablo Torre play for before Barcelona?
The 20-year-old playmaker came through the ranks at Racing Santander and caught the eye with his exceptional performances in the third tier of Spanish football prior to his switch to the Nou Camp.
He is an attacking midfielder with the potential to score and assist goals on a regular basis, which means that the exciting youngster, who was once dubbed a "wonderkid" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, could become Beale's next version of England international Mason Mount.
The Gers head coach played a key role in the 24-year-old's development during their time together in Chelsea's academy, and, as recently as 2021, it was reported that the player regularly contacts him for advice, which highlights how much of an impact the 42-year-old tactician had on him as the English maestro clearly respects his opinion.
Mount, who recently joined Manchester United for £55m, is a midfielder who has proven himself capable of making a huge impact in the final third. During the 2021/22 campaign, the mercurial talent plundered 11 goals and ten assists in 32 Premier League matches for the Blues.
Former Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount.
Beale could now find his next iteration of the 36-cap wizard by signing Torre and working with the 20-year-old prospect to develop his game over the years to come.
Torre enjoyed an impressive 2021/22 season with Racing, prior to his move to Barcelona, as he plundered ten goals and 11 assists in 34 appearances across all competitions, including ten goals alongside nine assists in 31 league outings.
The promising young talent, who the aforementioned Kulig compared to Marco Verratti and Luka Modric, showcased his ability to be a huge threat at the top end of the pitch, due to his ability to offer quality as a scorer as well as a creator of goals from an attacking midfield position.
If the Barcelona gem is capable of translating that form for Racing over to the Scottish Premiership for Rangers then he would become Beale's own Mount at Ibrox, as a midfielder who can hit double figures for goals and assists – a feat no Light Blues player managed in the league last term.
Therefore, the club should push to secure a deal to make him the seventh addition of the summer in the hope that the ex-Chelsea youth coach can unearth the technician's talent next season, although it remains to be seen how viable a move is at this moment in time.
Jason Behrendorff finished with 14 wickets for the match – the ninth-best match figures in Sheffield Shield history – as Western Australia won by an innings against Victoria

Jason Behrendorff finished with 14 for 89, the ninth-best match figures in Sheffield Shield history, as Western Australia wrapped up an innings victory over Victoria inside two days at the WACA. Behrendorff added five second-innings wickets to his nine from the first innings as Victoria were tumbled out for 130, losing by an innings and 38 runs.Behrendorff was just the second man in the post-war era to collect as many as 14 wickets in a Sheffield Shield game – Terry Alderman was the other, having picked up 14 for 87 in a match against New South Wales in 1981, also at the WACA. It completed a remarkable comeback match for Behrendorff, who was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his left fibula in early December. The second morning began with Western Australia at 4 for 178, and while they were able to add only 107 to their overnight total it was more than enough to ensure they did not have to bat again. Behrendorff began Victoria’s second innings by scything through Travis Dean, Marcus Harris and Marcus Stoinis within his first four overs.Aaron Finch provided some resistance with an unbeaten 65, but the rest of the Victorians struggled, with 17-year-old Cameron Green picking up 3 for 20. Behrendorff returned to claim the final two wickets of the game, to finish with 5 for 52 to add to his 9 for 37 from the first innings, which were the fifth-best innings figures in Shield history.
