Liverpool £87m Target Could Displace Robertson Next Term

Liverpool are set for some major changes to their playing staff in the summer as they gear up for a period of transition next term that will see them take to the Anfield turf without many of the old guard who have been mainstays in Jurgen Klopp's side for several years.

Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are already on their way out in the off-season and more could be set to follow as the Merseyside giants plan ahead for 2023/24.

Transfer incomings and outgoings are likely to be at the forefront of Klopp's thinking with the summer window now almost upon us.

As per Sky Sports, one potential arrival at Anfield in the forthcoming transfer window may be RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol, who is attracting interest from Liverpool alongside Chelsea and Manchester City.

What's the latest news involving Josko Gvardiol and who could he displace at Anfield?

BILD report that RB Leipzig have reportedly set Gvardiol's price tag at €100 million (£87 million) amid significant attraction towards his services heading into the summer.

Speaking to Football FanCast, Red TV pundit Paul Machin thinks that any prospective arrival of Gvardiol at Anfield could pose a problem to Liverpool defender Andy Robertson, who has featured at times as part of a back three in recent matches to accommodate for Trent Alexander-Arnold's new advanced role.

Machin told FFC when asked about Gvardiol: "That's either as a long-term replacement for Virgil Van Dijk, who plays the left side of a centre-back pairing or more interestingly, is he going to challenge with Andy Robertson, who in this new system effectively plays more like a left of a back three."

Intriguingly, £100k-a-week earner Robertson has actually been linked with a shock move to Real Madrid, who are said to have the Scotland captain on a 'list of potential summer reinforcements' to replace Ferland Mendy, according to The Daily Mail.

Gvardiol, who has been labelled as "fearless" by former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand arriving at Liverpool would likely add further competition for his place in the side, especially in a back three, given his potential to develop into a star.

In 2022/23, the Croatia international has made 41 appearances in all competitions for RB Leipzig and netted three goals in the process, as per Transfermarkt.

Despite it not being the most obvious player comparison to make due to evident positional differences, WhoScored notes that Gvardiol this season trumps Robertson on completed clearances, pass success rate and aerial duels won per game. In order, Gvardiol has managed 2.3 clearances, 89.3% pass efficiency and 1.4 aerial bouts won. On the other hand, Robertson comes in at 1.3 clearances, 84.2% pass success and 0.6 successful aerial duels per fixture.

If Alexander-Arnold is going to feature in a central role more often next term, it may be an idea to bring in an elite-level central defender to combat counter attacks and also to provide quality distribution to break the lines, something Gvardiol evidently has the capacity to do.

As per BT Sport quoted by The Daily Express, pundit Owen Hargreaves tipped Gvardiol to go on to become the best central defender in the world, stating: "I think the boys said it, three centre backs in the studio before, all top players. He [Gvardiol], I think, is an absolute top one. I think he’ll be the best centre-back in the world one day."

In a summer of upheaval at Anfield, Gvardiol joining Liverpool would be a coup and he could go on to be a Premier League star for years to come.

Carter's great return worsens Notts' plight

Nottinghamshire, believe it or not, are deep in the relegation mire – and the situation has got worse after an intervention by their old boy Andy Carter

Discovering Nottinghamshire hanging around at the wrong end of the First Division is like finding the flash guy with the top-of-the-range BMW drinking in the cheapest pub in town. No matter how much you remind yourself he is loaded you can’t avoid noticing in the corner of your eye the unexpected scrambling for enough change for another bag of pork scratchings.Nottinghamshire are heading for Twenty20 finals day on Saturday. Among the most glamorous of county cricket’s limited-overs side they finally have a chance to claim a T20 trophy that has long seemed overdue. But four-day cricket is a less endearing story. It is entirely possible they could go to Edgbaston uncomfortably placed at the bottom of the Championship.Midway through this match, Hampshire lead by 180 with nine second-innings wickets intact, a position made more secure in the final session by Jimmy Adams’ unbeaten 68.”The plan now is bat and bat,” said Liam Dawson. “We’ll look to bat all day and see where it takes us.” They might be bottom but that they have the capacity to grind out a batting day is beyond doubt.A Hampshire victory would send them above Notts in the table. Such an outcome would not just cause shivers in the East Midlands. Hampshire have long presumed to be relegation fodder and a victory would cause consternation for Surrey, Lancashire and Durham. Suddenly, the First Division relegation outcome would look likely to be contested deep into September.Quite how Nottinghamshire succumbed for 245, 74 behind on first innings, must have been a mystery for their combative captain, Chris Read, whose counter-attacking, unbeaten 70, full of attractive off-side drives, prevented total calamity. It was Family Fun day at Trent Bridge but only Read seemed to want to do much colouring in. He seems to have been staving off Nottinghamshire collapses for a lifetime and, by rights, his boyish dash should have been exhausted years ago.To make matters worse, Nottinghamshire’s morning collapse, in which they lost five for 77 in decent batting conditions, was engineered by Andy Carter, whose gangling pace bowling used to be at Notts’ service until he rejected a new contract and decamped to Derbyshire at the end of last season, only to abandon that in disgust after half a season because of his lack of Championship opportunities to join Hampshire, who at that point had so many injured fast bowlers they were almost reduced to looking for solutions in a Tesco bargain bucket.Read considered a bad day with consummate understatement. One day he will surely crack, grab everybody by the throat and promptly announce his retirement. Until then he merely said: “It was a disappointing morning session and ultimately, although it was a good fightback to get to 245, we were somewhat lacking in first innings’ runs.”Andy Carter bowled nicely. We all like Andy here at Notts and we’ve fond memories of his time with us. Unfortunately for us he chose this moment to bowl a good opening spell. We’ve not batted well all season; it’s one area we are trying to improve. We are working exceptionally hard behind the scenes to put things right but again we came unstuck.”Hampshire went into the match with only Ryan McLaren taking his Championship wickets under 40s, but Carter’s debut gave them a bowler eminently capable of a hot spell or two, his Derbyshire return of six wickets for 73.33 best overlooked. An incisive pre-lunch spell underlined that as he removed three former team-mates for six runs in 12 deliveries. The nightwatchman, Jake Ball, hit his first delivery to Adam Wheater at midwicket, Riki Wessels found a bouncer from a former team-mate irresistible and holed out, fourth ball, at deep square leg, and Steven Mullaney chopped a rising delivery onto his stumps. Wessels has had an eye-catching one-day season and strange things can happen to an attacking player met by an old team-mate who bangs one in and suggests: “Go on then, try to hit that for old time’s sake.”When you need to dig in, Brendon Taylor is not your man. Neither does he immediately strike you as the sort of high-profile signing you want in a relegation battle. Since abandoning an unpredictable international career with Zimbabwe for the security of county cricket, he has produced the occasional destructive innings alongside rather too many lax dismissals to earn admiration in his new homeland. He fell to a good catch by Mason Crane at midwicket, off Gareth Berg, and soon afterwards Notts were 91 for 6 when Samit Patel was lbw, struck on the boot by Brad Wheal and hobbled off. He was the hero of Notts’ NatWest Blast quarter-final win and the crowd rose to him with great fondness, which was nice to see, but the sense will forever remain that it is impossible for Samit to cross the road without the intervention of a couple of moments of tragi-comedy.That left Read to find support from Michael Lumb – a restrained innings ending when he edged an attempted pull and became a fourth wicket for Carter – and some tail-end spanking from Luke Wood and, more unexpectedly, Imran Tahir, helped by a missed stumping off Dawson. Wood was unhinged by a short ball from McLaren which deflected off bat and helmet. Carter’s simple catch in the leg-side allowed Dawson to wrap up the innings with wickets in successive balls. Hampshire are still kicking for all they are worth.

Tottenham: Media Praise Outrageous Spurs Star Vs Leeds

Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane has been praised after he became the first player ever to score 30-plus goals in two separate 38-game Premier League seasons.

Leeds United 1-4 Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs signed off what was a regrettable 2022/2023 campaign in style, putting the now-relegated Leeds United to the sword at Elland Road this afternoon.

Goals from Harry Kane (2), Pedro Porro and a dazzling final farewell strike from Lucas Moura sealed a routine win for the north Londoners – and on Ryan Mason’s final game in interim charge of the side.

Former Man City winger Jack Harrison briefly got Leeds back into the game, making it 2-1 for a period mid-way through the second half, but just moments later, Kane cemented Leeds’ Championship fate with his second.

The 29-year-old curled a lovely finish past Joel Robles, but as much as the goal broke Leeds hearts everywhere, it was also a top flight milestone.

harry-kane-ryan-mason-spurs

Kane’s effort makes him the only player in Premier League history to score 30-plus goals in two seperate campaigns, with members of the media heaping praise on him for the achievement.

PA Sports reporter George Sessions branded the forward bigger than Spurs, while news aggregator Tottenham Tiers called Kane simply incredible.

Meanwhile, BBC Anaylst Statman Dave said he “can’t be stopped” with talkSPORT weighing in with an “elite” tag.

Who is Harry Kane?

Kane’s record-breaking performance today will only heighten his reputation heading into the summer transfer window, with the likes of Man United and Chelsea thought to be eyeing a move.

The Three Lions ace will be one of the hot topics, especially with just one year remaining on his deal, and he has been a star player for years.

Tying him down to fresh terms will be imperative for Daniel Levy and Spurs as he is arguably irreplaceable.

Smith 'angry' with himself over his dismissals

In the aftermath of Australia’s 0-3 whitewash at the hands of Sri Lanka, captain Steven Smith spoke about his annoyance at the nature of his dismissals and his frustration at letting good positions slip

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Aug-2016

“I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t replayed my dismissals from this series over and over in my head”•Associated Press

In the aftermath of Australia’s 0-3 whitewash at the hands of Sri Lanka, captain Steven Smith has spoken about his annoyance at the nature of his dismissals and his frustration that his side had failed to capitalise on good positions.Smith was twice bowled by Rangana Herath while attempting to cut, and was also stumped twice and trapped lbw once off the same bowler. He admitted to mulling over those dismissals and being dissatisfied with his showing.”I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t replayed my dismissals from this series over and over in my head when I’ve been alone in my hotel room,” Smith wrote in his column for . “Looking back, there are several shots that I regret playing. I regret playing a cut shot and getting bowled by Rangana Herath – twice. Those ones really hurt me because I’d practised that exact thing in the nets a huge amount in the lead-up to this series.”I also regret standing on middle and leg stump in the second innings of the first Test, and getting out lbw. If I had been batting on leg stump, I probably would have got my bat in the way, and not been out. Those sorts of things make me angry with myself, given how much I’ve prepared for those scenarios in the nets.”Another source of frustration for Smith was his team’s inability to build on good positions in the series. In the first Test, Australia had bowled Sri Lanka out for 117 in the first innings, but went on to lose by 106 runs. In the third Test, they had Sri Lanka 26 for 5 on the first morning and then lost by 163 runs.”We didn’t take advantage of the good situations we had with the ball,” Smith said. “In the third Test we had Sri Lanka in big trouble on 5 for 26 but we let them off the hook and they went on to score 355. That’s not good enough and we know it. We’ve had opportunities to win Test matches, we just haven’t taken them and it’s really cost us.”The principal cause of Australia’s downfall in the series, though, was the left-arm spin of Herath. He took 28 wickets in the series at 12.75, and Australia’s batsmen simply did not seem to have any convincing answers to the questions he repeatedly posed. Expressing relief that Herath would not feature in the ODIs, Smith also revealed that he had an open chat with the Sri Lankan spinner after the series about how he works his magic.”At least for the one-dayers I know that Herath won’t be there – he’s retired from ODI cricket. The bloke may be 37-years-old but he’s still a real handful as a bowler. I would know – he got me out five times out of six in this series!”We actually had a drink with the Sri Lankans after the game, and I had a chat to Herath about his bowling tactics. I joked with him that he better stay retired from one-dayers because now I might finally be able to score some runs! He was gracious enough to explain little things like how he changes the trajectory of the ball just by adjusting the height of his arm, and how when there’s a breeze he puts the shiny side of the ball on the outside to try get the ball to drift.”I normally wouldn’t talk so openly with an opponent like that, but he got me out so often that I needed to try work out what to do! I really appreciated him being so open with me.”

Leeds’ "Awful" £25k-p/w Dud Must Never Play Again

Leeds United endured a miserable campaign in all honesty, as the club self-destructed to condemn them to relegation just three years after earning their triumphant return to the Premier League.

So much has changed at Elland Road since Marcelo Bielsa masterminded that promotion, and despite getting what they wanted by achieving this, Andrea Radrizzani's outfit are in a far worse situation now than they were then, without a manager, a plan or a committed ownership it seems, as his purchase of Sampdoria closes in.

Although many will turn to lambast the hierarchy for overseeing such a torrid term, it is hard to look past those on the pitch for the true villains who let the fans down yet again.

Last year marked a great escape from the drop, but they were not to be so lucky this time.

It is easy to turn to Jesse Marsch as the main factor for their failings, or perhaps take out frustrations on Patrick Bamford's profligacy at the key moments. However, Luke Ayling once again played a huge role in a season where relegation loomed throughout, and his poor showings only emphasise the need for a replacement to force him out of the club.

How did Luke Ayling play this season?

Having made himself a villain last campaign for his reckless red card in the run-in that led Jamie Carragher to brand him an "idiot", the 31-year-old had plenty of making up to do the season following.

However, with a 6.60 average rating, at the heart of a defence that shipped 78 goals, this was a failed venture. Even the added competition of Rasmus Kristensen was not enough to spur on some finer performances, as the Denmark international could only muster a 6.70 rating of his own in a troubling debut year.

He proved himself to once again be a defensive liability, with his lack of awareness and culpability showcased on many occasions. His 69% pass accuracy outlined him as someone unable to play out from the back, and he would make two errors leading to shots and commit one penalty too, via Sofascore.

However, what the statistics do not show is his laziness, with Tottenham Hotspur's opener last weekend made so easy because of his failure to simply track a runner.

This was not a sole occurrence too.

leeds-united-sam-allardyce

Journalist Tom Oladipo even suggested as recently as March that "Ayling has been awful for a long time", and yet he remained a mainstay under Marsch, then Javi Gracia, and even Sam Allardyce.

The £25k-per-week dud got lucky that his foolishness did not cost his team last year, but this season he was without a Raphinha-like figure to bail out his consistently underwhelming displays.

If Radrizzani is actually keen to propel his club out of the Championship with speed, he must ensure that Sunday marked Ayling's final game in a Leeds shirt. He can no longer be trusted in that back four.

Crowd trouble mars both ODIs in Dambulla

Substantial crowd trouble marred both Dambulla ODIs, as several thousand ticket-holders were either unable to take their seats, or – in some cases – even enter the ground

The perception that a move towards online ticket sales marginalised a large portion of cricket fans is what is understood to have angered some of those who swarmed the gates of the stadium in Dambulla•Associated Press

Substantial crowd trouble marred both Dambulla ODIs, as several thousand ticket-holders were either unable to take their seats, or – in some cases – even enter the ground. SLC has issued an apology, and condemned the actions of spectators who forced their way into the venue. This is the first series in which SLC has sold its tickets through BookMyShow – a ticket distributor of Indian origin. Tickets were sold at outlets in many of the main towns in the region, as well as online. However, the perception that a move towards online ticket sales marginalised a large portion of cricket fans is what is understood to have angered some of those who swarmed the gates of the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium last week. Wednesday’s ODI had even seen a large protest at the entrance, which led to severe congestion on the Colombo-Dambulla main road.”SLC has clearly advertised the selling points of tickets, and has sold their tickets prior to the match at 18 outlets island-wide, including in Dambulla, Matale and Anuradhapura,” an SLC release said. “Ninety per cent of the tickets were reported sold through the above network and only 10% via internet.”Public who did not purchase their respective tickets prior to the match behaved in an unruly manner, causing a situation outside the main gate. As a result, even the people who purchased the tickets could not come into the ground, due to the heavy traffic congestion caused by the unruly crowd who were blocking the main road in protest. Sri Lanka Police made several requests to the protestors to move out of the road to enable the genuine ticket holders to enter the ground. More than 2000 spectators who had purchased tickets complained that they could not get into the grounds within the first two hours of the play.”The standoff between the police and the “unruly crowd” had only been resolved after the gates were opened even to those who had not bought tickets, in order to clear the road.In the previous match, on Sunday, thousands were seen entering the ground illegally, which led to the 18,000-capacity stadium having to accommodate up to 45,000 people. The protesting crowd had pelted the police with stones on Wednesday, but there have been no reports of major injury as a result of either incident.”SLC would like to state that this kind of behaviour is unacceptable and would like to denounce the violent behaviour of the protestors who pelted stones at the police and damaged property of the stadium. As a result, Sri Lanka Police had no choice but to use minimal force to curb the situation.”The new ticketing protocols have been in place right through the tour, but Dambulla is the only venue at which substantial crowd-control issues have emerged. Dambulla also has the lowest capacity of the three limited-overs venues.
