VARchester United! Have Solskjaer's side really been helped by referees?

Fans of rival clubs believe that the Red Devils have benefited from preferential treatment this season, so Goal has reviewed all 19 of their penalties

Not since the days of Sir Alex Ferguson have we heard so much talk about Manchester United getting preferential treatment off referees.

Social media has been running wild with talk of 'VARchester United' and 'Man Utd Penalty Bingo' because of how many spot-kicks Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have been awarded this season.

However, even Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has voiced his concern over the number of decisions that seem to be going United's way.

But are United really receiving help from the officials?

Below, we review all 19 penalties awarded to the Red Devils this season to see whether there's anything to these conspiracy theories…

Getty1FA Cup: Man Utd 1-3 Chelsea

Callum Hudson-Odoi blatantly tripped Martial as United tried in vain to get themselves back into the semi-final showdown at Wembley.  Fernandes fired home but it was little more than a consolation goal for United as their hopes of FA Cup glory went up in smoke.

Verdict: PENALTY!

The most controversial decision of the season? It was certainly a historic one, as United equalled the record for most penalties received in a single Premier League season (13). Jon Moss pointed to the spot after Fernandes had been upended by Ezri Konsa in the area. However, on closer inspection, it emerged that the attacking midfielder had actually initiated the contact. However, VAR inexplicably agreed with Moss, clearing the way for Fernandes to open the scoring. Villa boss Dean Smith called it a "disgraceful" decision and his fury was understandable.

Verdict: NO PENALTY!

The game at Old Trafford was tied at one goal apiece when Mike Dean pointed to the spot in the 35th minute, after noticing an Adam Smith handball. Rashford took care of the rest as United went on to record an impressive victory.

Verdict: PENALTY!

Eric Dier was bamboozled by Paul Pogba's neat footwork and bundled the Frenchman over in the box. Fernandes scored from the spot to salvage a point for United.

Verdict: PENALTY!

N.B. Jon Moss awarded United a penalty in the dying minutes for another perceived foul on Pogba by Dier but the referee was correctly overruled by VAR.

Man City player ratings vs Man Utd: Erling Haaland takes the headlines – but brilliant Bernardo Silva dominates derby-day

Pep Guardiola's side ran out 3-0 winners at Old Trafford on Sunday as two goals and an assist from their Norwegian goal machine sealed the points

Manchester City put in a dominant derby-day performance as Erling Haaland led the way with a brace and Phil Foden wrapped up a 3-0 victory over Manchester United. The star of the show, however, was Bernardo Silva.

The Portugal international was totally illusive throughout the afternoon, leading United a merry dance on his way to providing his fifth assist against the Red Devils of his career – the most of any player since 2017.

That assist came for Haaland's second as Bernardo's cross was headed in at the back post by the Norwegian striker. He had earlier opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Rasmus Hojlund was adjudged to have pulled down Rodri while defending a free-kick.

In truth, Haaland could have had three more goals if not for an impressive performance from United goalkeeper Andre Onana, but he could do nothing to stop Foden from rounding out the scoring from close range.

GOAL rates Man City's players from Old Trafford…

Getty ImagesGoalkeeper & Defence

Ederson (7/10):

Superb save kept McTominay from equalising late in the first half. Distributed brilliantly, as always.

Kyle Walker (6/10):

Dealt well with Rashford and wasn't shy of a physical battle.

John Stones (8/10):

Spent as much time in midfield as defence, but most important action came when tracking down Hojlund as it looked like the United striker was clean through. Calmness personified both in and out of possession.

Ruben Dias (6/10):

Caught out by poor passes from team-mates at times but largely led by example.

Josko Gvardiol (7/10):

Almost had a couple of costly lapses in possession early on but recovered and got stronger as the game went on. Ensured Fernandes was basically a non-factor.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesMidfield

Rodri (8/10):

Barely misplaced a pass as he kept City ticking over in midfield. Won the penalty with a late run into the box.

Bernardo Silva (9/10):

United tried to man-mark him but could barely get close to the magic midfielder. Constantly on the move and offering himself for team-mates, he capped a superb showing with the cross for Haaland's second. Keeping him was the best piece of business City pulled off during the summer.

Getty ImagesAttack

Phil Foden (7/10):

Plenty of good but also some moments where he made the wrong decision or played a disappointing pass. Won't care after netting the third from close range.

Julian Alvarez (6/10):

One of his quieter games, but that was in part due to Bernardo taking over. Went close with a free-kick that Onana tipped over.

Erling Haaland (8/10):

Probably should have had five goals after twice being denied by Onana, but made sure of the points with a well-taken penalty and a buried header. Nigh on unstoppable if he gets the service.

Jack Grealish (8/10):

Enjoyed his best game since returning from injury. Played a key role in Haaland's second and caused Dalot plenty of problems. Twice saw shots pushed away by Onana.

Mateo Kovacic (N/A):

On for the final five minutes.

Jeremy Doku (N/A):

Replaced Grealish late on

Pep Guardiola (8/10):

Knew exactly what to expect and saw his team cruise through what should be one of their toughest game. Opting for Grealish over in-form Doku paid off, too.

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Nov-2014Auckland moved into third position on the points table with a five-wicket win over Canterbury in Christchurch. Donovan Grobbelaar’s four wickets restricted Canterbury to 118 after they chose to bat. Auckland lost wickets regularly in the chase but captain Rob Nicol steered them with an unbeaten 52 and Brad Cachopa hit fours off the two balls he faced to haul his side home with two deliveries remaining.Ronnie Hira made 53 off 39 for Canterbury at the top of the order but the next highest contribution was Aiden Blizzard’s 17. The rest managed single-digit scores. Grobbelaar had career-best figures of 3.1-0-10-4 while Tarun Nethula picked up two wickets.Hamish Bennett struck in successive overs at the start of the chase but Nicol kept the innings moving with his 52 off 54. PCB bans Umaid Asif for a year

Fast bowler Umaid Asif has been banned for one year by the Pakistan Cricket Board’s anti-doping tribunal after testing positive for a prohibited substance

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Oct-2014Fast bowler Umaid Asif has been banned for one year by the Pakistan Cricket Board’s anti-doping tribunal after testing positive for a prohibited substance. The ban has been deemed to have commenced from January 23.According to a PCB release, Umaid’s urine sample was collected on November 29 in Lahore last year when he was representing Khan Research Laboratories against State Bank of Pakistan in the Faysal Bank T-20 Cup. Netherlands claim first scalp

Netherlands clinched their first Yorkshire Bank 40 victory of the season after beating Worcestershire by six wickets in a rain-affected match at New Road

16-Jun-2013
ScorecardTom Cooper guided Netherlands to their total•ICC/Sander TholenNetherlands clinched their first Yorkshire Bank 40 victory of the season after beating Worcestershire by six wickets in a rain-affected match at New Road.In a Group A game reduced to 18 overs-a-side, the visitors reached their 91-run target in gloomy conditions with 14 balls to spare. It was Worcestershire’s third consecutive home defeat against Netherlands, who gained sweet revenge for their 44-run reversal at the hands of the same opponents in Rotterdam earlier this month. After losing openers Stephan Myburgh and Wesley Barresi in successive overs with the score on 21, the Dutch dealt a massive blow to the hosts’ semi-final qualification hopes following valuable contributions from Tom Cooper (29 not out) and Daan van Bunge (25).Earlier, Worcestershire, after being put in, had been restricted to 90 for 6 after being given a welcome lift by Thilan Samaraweera, who struck an unbeaten 47 off 49 balls with four fours. They had got off to a dismal start when Moeen Ali was caught off the second ball of the innings at short fine leg off paceman Viv Kingma. His early departure heralded the arrival of Alexei Kervezee, who has represented Netherlands at all levels since age of 13. Earlier this year, however, he announced he would no longer be available to play for them after deciding to concentrate on his New Road career. His efforts to impress his former team-mates rapidly ended when he drove at Kingma and was caught behind by Barresi for 6. Captain Daryl Mitchell’s knock was also short-lived and when he fell to Pieter Seelaar his side were struggling at 25 for 3 after seven overs.Next in was teenage batsman Tom Fell, who was called up for his first county appearance which lasted just three balls before a mix-up with Samaraweera led to him being run out for 2. Anish Kapil’s removal for a duck then left Worcestershire in disarray with half their side out for just 28 in nine overs.Worse was to follow when Ben Cox became another run out victim before Samaraweera and Brett D’Oliveira (16 not out) did their best to repair the damage with an unbeaten stand worth 55 in 7.3 overs.

Kohli's 'aggressive' response fails to break duck

Virat Kohli’s English summer of discontent is not over. His duck at Cardiff was the third on this tour after he failed to open his account twice during the five-match Test series

Nagraj Gollapudi27-Aug-2014Virat Kohli’s English summer of discontent is not over. His duck in Cardiff was the third on this tour after he failed to open his account twice during the five-match Test series. But his latest failure is likely to ring loud in Kohili’s ears considering just before the start of play he had said that he was ready to “express” himself and “play aggressive” during the ODI series. Kohli said that it was a format where he felt comfortable and was confident that India could bounce back after the 3-1 defeat Test series.”The Test series was a bit difficult. In a five-game series when you don’t get going and you keep getting out, it is pretty difficult to comeback,” Kohli told the former England batsman Nick Knight in an interview with . “We got a few days off, had a good practice game, got a few runs there. This format has always been where I express myself, don’t think too much, don’t pressurize myself too much. Just going to go out there, I back myself and play some aggressive cricket.”True to his word Kohli charged Chris Woakes, facing just his third ball, and drilled a drive straight into the hands of England captain Alastair Cook, who accepted the gift with a warm smile at mid-off. Even Kohli might admit that it was too much, too soon considering Shikhar Dhawan had departed earlier in the same over.During the pre-match interview Kohli had been all bravado. Much maligned for his performance during the Pataudi Trophy where he had an aggregate of 139 runs from 10 innings, with a highest score of 39, Kohli said the change of formats was a good cure for his struggles.”It is very easy to connect the two, but as a professional cricketer you have got to separate different formats and start afresh every game and every series. You have got to forget what has happened and try to play the best cricket you can in whatever is coming your way.”Kohli added that despite the failures of the Indian batsmen, they were now better equipped to deal with the challenges during the ODI series, reduced to four matches after the Bristol game was washed out on Monday. He also said having won the Champions Trophy last year in England gave the team an extra bit of confidence.”Having been here for a month-and-a-half obviously helps a lot as well. What areas to hit when you are batting and bowling. We are going to be better prepared than we were in Champions Trophy. That was probably one of our best performances, [where we] surprised everyone. I hope we can play according to the conditions and whatever is thrown at us.”Despite being just 25 years old, Kohli has registered 19 ODI centuries, and is a close third behind the South African pair of Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers on the ICC rankings in the 50-over format. He is already the third-highest century-maker for India, after Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly (only three behind Ganguly) and it has taken Kohli only six years to get there. When Knight pointed out the feat Kohli, modest yet proud, said that he had worked hard and committed to a plan which made him climb to the heights only a few great batsmen have reached.”It is quite surreal when I sit back and think about it. I didn’t expect myself to be here so early. I have worked hard. Things have come my way and I have grabbed the opportunities that have come my way,” he said. “The thing I look to do is win the game for the team till the end. And that is why I have gone on to make the three-figure mark more than a few occasions because I want to make the team win. It is not about me scoring a hundred. It is about making sure the team crosses the line or when I am batting first making sure the team gets a decent total on the board. So I look to bat throughout. That has been my strength.”On this occasion, however, that strength proved his downfall.

Faulkner ruled out of South Africa Test tour

James Faulkner has been ruled out of Australia’s Test tour of South Africa due to a knee injury and Shaun Marsh and Jackson Bird are still in doubt and will remain in Australia for further assessment while the rest of the squad departs on Wednesday

Brydon Coverdale27-Jan-2014James Faulkner has been ruled out of Australia’s Test tour of South Africa due to a knee injury and Shaun Marsh and Jackson Bird are still in doubt and will remain in Australia for further assessment while the rest of the squad departs on Wednesday.Faulkner has been replaced in the squad by fellow allrounder Moises Henriques, who played his only three Tests on the tour of India early last year and will fly to South Africa after playing in Wednesday’s first Twenty20 against England in Hobart. Faulkner will have arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Tuesday after picking up an injury during Sunday’s final one-day international against England in Adelaide.”James’ exact rehab plan and return to training and playing will be determined after surgery but unfortunately for him, he will not be available for the upcoming Test tour of South Africa,” the team physio Alex Kountouris said. “We are hopeful that he will recover in time to play the Twenty 20 games on that tour and take part in the ICC World Twenty20.”Faulkner’s presence in the Test squad would have given the selectors another option for balancing the side in South Africa if they chose to move the wicketkeeper Brad Haddin up to No.6. Henriques appears much less likely to play in the Tests than Faulkner would have; Henriques played three Sheffield Shield matches in the first half of the season and scored 202 runs at 33.66 and took five wickets at 36.60.In the last Shield match before the break for the BBL, Henriques scored 127 against South Australia, and he said that innings helped him gain some momentum heading in to the Twenty20 tournament. The challenge of Test cricket in South Africa against an attack boasting the top two bowlers on the ICC’s Test rankings will be immense, but Henriques believes his batting has improved in the past few seasons.”I certainly feel like my batting has progressed over the last couple of years … I feel like I’m learning quicker now,” Henriques said. “It’s going to be tough. It will be completely different conditions in South Africa so I’ll have to learn on the go over there. Their bowling attack will be very different to the bowling attack that India threw at us in the Test series over there.”The Australians also have concerns over the fitness of Marsh, who strained his calf during the ODI victory in Adelaide. Marsh had been scheduled to travel to South Africa on Tuesday night but instead will remain in Perth for further treatment over the coming days and Cricket Australia said in a statement that “a decision on whether he will travel to South Africa will be made in due course”.Similar doubts will keep Bird in Australia while the rest of the squad departs. Bird jarred his back while fielding for the Melbourne Stars in a BBL match last week and Cricket Australia confirmed he will remain in Hobart “to be assessed by CA’s medical staff and return to bowling to determine if he has recovered sufficiently enough to take his place on the South Africa tour”.Bird was unlikely to be in the starting XI for the first Test in Centurion, given the success of the pace trio of Mitchell Johnson, Ryan Harris and Peter Siddle during the Ashes. However, when the squad was named last week there appeared a strong chance that Marsh would be part of the starting XI, given the absence of the incumbent No.6 George Bailey from the squad. The majority of Australia’s Test players will depart for South Africa over the next two days, although their first official tour match does not begin until next Wednesday in Potchefstroom. Faulkner had been the only player from the Test squad also named for the T20s against England over the coming week; his place in the T20 squad will now be taken by the fast bowler Kane Richardson.
