Everton recruitment team like Ndombele

Everton have had a rather quiet transfer window by their standards.

So used to spending significant sums of money in the market, Rafa Benitez has been restricted to making cut-price additions after making the move to Goodison Park.

What’s the word?

Despite limited finances, we could still expect one or two new additions at Everton before the window is up.

The Toffees have regularly been linked with a move for Lazio forward Joaquin Correa but the sheer amount of money they will have to pay makes a deal difficult to envisage.

Everton reporter Patrick Boyland seems to think that a couple of loan deals could be concluded before the deadline.

He was speaking during an Athletic Q&A last weekend after he was questioned about a potential move for Tottenham’s Tanguy Ndombele.

Boyland commented: “They’ve liked him before (they being the recruitment side) but he was obviously out of reach then. The reporting from London seems to suggest he’s available but that Spurs would prefer to recoup some/most of the sizeable transfer fee.

“Everton have looked at midfielders (Longstaff etc) but there’s not much money atm. Maybe a loan or two.”

Intriguing news

It remains to be seen if Spurs are willing to let Ndombele leave but if the Frenchman really isn’t willing to play for Nuno Santo this term, Tottenham could negotiate a loan move that involves a hefty future fee next summer.

That deal would be a difficult one to conclude and would surely be out of the realms of possibility but it’s incredibly intriguing for supporters that Everton are already admirers of him.

If they can wrap up a move for Ndombele then it would be a remarkable piece of business.

Despite his troubled time in north London, the powerful central midfielder is still an enormous talent who can offer plenty to a Premier League side.

He is an incredibly tricky player to deal with, primarily because of his immense strength and ability to carry the ball.

Graceful in possession, Ndombele completed 85.6% of his passes last term while winning 1.2 tackles per match. On top of that, he was successful with 2.2 dribbles a game. That would have seen him top the list of dribblers at Everton last season with Richarlison their highest at 1.8 an outing.

With that in mind, the Spurs gem could offer the Toffees something completely different in the middle of the park.

His attitude is questionable but there is no denying his supreme talent. Just imagine the brute force Everton could build from central areas with him and Abdoulaye Doucoure lining up together.

If the Merseyside outfit is serious about getting back in Europe, this is the type of acquisition they must make. That’s easier said than done, though.

Leeds: Whites plotting Rob Dickie move

Leeds United and Wolves are thought to be plotting late moves for Queens Park Rangers defender Rob Dickie, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Dickie profiled

Dickie, described as ‘quick’ by former manager Karl Robinson, joined QPR last September.

Since then, the 25-year-old has made 48 appearances under Mark Warburton, three of which have come this season.

The 6 foot 1 centre-back has actually scored in each of his appearances during the current campaign and is currently the best-rated player in the Championship, as per WhoScored.

It appears as if his displays have caught the eye of Leeds officials, who could now launch a move for his services over the coming weeks.

The Latest: Source shares update

Football Insider, who were informed by a recruitment source, shared a story on Tuesday morning.

They suggested that both Leeds and Wolves are monitoring Dickie closely and are weighing up moves late in the window.

QPR are reluctant to part ways with Dickie, however, they are prepared for late interest in their star man.

The Verdict: Avoid

Even though Dickie is currently the best performer in the second-tier according to Whoscored, the Whites are fairly well-stocked at centre-back and have other areas which need strengthening first.

Marcelo Bielsa has four senior centre-backs on the books at Elland Road in Liam Cooper, Diego Llorente, Robin Koch and Pascal Struijk.

Luke Ayling and Kalvin Phillips can also provide cover in that area if needs must, so Leeds should focus on signing a central midfielder and a winger as reported before looking at centre-back additions.

Sheffield Wednesday fans slam Berahino

Many Sheffield Wednesday fans have been slamming the performance of Saido Berahino in their 3-0 loss at home to Hartlepool United on Wednesday night.

The Owls were simply blown away by their League Two counterparts in the Papa John’s Trophy, with goals from Mark Shelton and Will Goodwin as well as an own goal from Jaden Brown more than enough to dispose of the hosts.

There were some pretty poor performances for the home side, and Berahino in particular had a very disappointing game.

The former West Brom striker lost out on all three of his duels and also failed with both of his goal attempts, while he made no successful dribbles or key passes. He was also guilty of losing the ball six times and only managed 31 touches in total, fewer than Owls goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith (SofaScore).

IPL pads up for Bangkok meet

A possible upward revision in the US$ 5-million purchase cap for cricketers, a change in the limit for the number of foreign players in a team to be up for discussion

The future shape of the IPL will be decided in Bangkok over the next three days when league officials and representatives of the eight franchises meet to discuss several issues that will impact those involved. The issues include a possible upward revision in the US$5-million purchase cap for cricketers, a change in the limit of foreign players in a team and the fluctuating dollar rate that could affect player payments by some franchises. While “kicking off the next season” of the hugely successful Twenty20 tournament, the meeting from October 17-19, the first of its kind after the hugely-successful first edition in April-June this year, will also finalise details of a possible player transfer window around December and a player auction in January ahead of the next season scheduled for April 10- May 29.Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, said the meeting would “address a range of issues including a review of the last tournament and share the experiences of various stakeholders”. He, however, did not discuss the details of the meeting, except to clarify that “nothing has been finalised on the salary cap” and that the franchises were bound to honour their contracts with players.”At this point, all I can say is that there will be many suggestions and any decision will be taken only at the meeting,” said Niranjan Shah, the previous BCCI secretary and IPL’s new vice-chairman.Franchise representatives said they would discuss a proposal to raise the salary cap by US$2 million to help them gain from the next player auction with the availablity of more players from abroad, notably England. “Most of the teams, except Jaipur (it spent only US$ 3.3 million and picked up most of its players in the second, lesser-value auction), have neared the US$5-million cap already and can’t spend any more on new players. Besides, the transfer window could see a lot of action and teams will look to have some cash in hand to spend on players who are available,” said a franchise representative. Most wantedRise in salary cap for players by US$2 million, to help franchises gain from the next player auction by adding more value to their squadDecision on the fate of ‘unwanted’ players – do they remain in the squad or are they moved to a transfer pool so other franchises can still buy new players?A solution to the dollar-rupee situation which was originally pegged at Rs 40 to the US dollar and has led to an almost 20% difference in the value of foreign playersIncrease in number of foreign players in a squad to 10 which may help accomodate players from EnglandAnother proposal to increase the number of foreign players in a squad, currently around eight or nine per team, to 10, may also be considered. The discussion on the transfer window will also decide the fate of “unwanted” players – those who have not performed in the first edition or those who do not fit into the franchises’ gameplan for the next. “If a franchise tries to sell a player but has no takers, even at a reduced price, does he remain in the squad or is he moved to a transfer pool so other franchises can still buy new players?,” a representative said. “The franchise will still need to pay the player as most players have three-year contracts.”Another concern for the franchises would be the exchange rate situation which has led to an almost 20% difference in the value of foreign players. Also, while some franchises have been paying their foreign players in rupees, converted later to dollars, with Rs 40 as the conversion rate, a falling rupee has meant those players getting less than the original guaranteed sum in dollars.”The problem lies in the two sets of contracts are in force for the IPL. While foreign players have signed ‘dollar contracts’ the Indian players contracts’ are in rupee terms. The contentious point is that the franchise-IPL agreement specifies US$ 40 as the basis of all payments, while the franchise-player contracts are silent on the conversion rate,” a representative said.Officials associated with the IPL, however, maintained that if the franchise had signed a dollar contract, it was bound to stick to the terms, irrespective of the rate. “Besides, this is an issue that can cut both ways. What if the dollar drops to Rs 36, won’t the franchises stand to gain?” an official said.Though the franchises dismissed talks of forming an association to put forward their views forcefully before the IPL governing council, they will be expecting a lot of answers in Bangkok which will be key to their strategies as they pad up for another season of the IPL.

ScorecardWest Indies made the perfect start to their tour of Sri Lanka with a win in the first ODI in Dambulla. Stacy Ann-King laid the foundation with her 70 and offspinners Afy Fletcher and Stefanie Taylor shared six wickets between them to ensure a comfortable 40-run win.Sri Lankan captain Shashikala Siriwardene looked to have made the correct decision to field first, as Sripali Weerakkody struck in the second over, trapping Deandra Dottin leg-before. Chamani Seneviratna then removed Juliana Nero as West Indies were reduced to 27 for 2 in the seventh over.As King held up one end, a steady trickle of wickets at the other saw West Indies struggle at 50 for 5. Weerakkody was the wrecker-in-chief picking up three wickets during the collapse.Useful stand with Danielle Small and Kiribyina Alexander saw King guiding the team to relative safety at 136, bringing up her half-century in the process. However, left-arm spinner Suwini de Alwis ensured there was no fightback by removing Alexander, Anisa Mohammed and King in three successive overs. King hit eight fours and two sixes in her 100-ball innings. It was Shanel Daley’s unbeaten 16 that helped West Indies to cross the 150-mark and finally finish on 167.Openers Dedunu Silva and Chamari Polgampola gave Sri Lanka a good start to their chase, but Fletcher dismissed Silva with 39 on the board; Siriwardene followed 12 runs later.Polgampola and Hiruka Fernando then looked to rebuild the innings, putting on 40 for the second wicket. But a dramatic collapse was to follow.Polgmapola was out lbw to Mohammed, who again struck in her next over, getting Fernando caught and bowled with the score 94 for 4. Taylor accounted for de Alwis and Eshani Kaushalya in successive balls as the momentum swung back in favour of the visitors.Taylor bowled Weerakoddy to end with figures of 8-2-10-3 as West Indies closed in on victory. Fletcher took the final wicket of Dilani Manodara to finish with 3 for 21 and wrap up the win, as Sri Lanka lost their last six wickets for 18 runs.

Tottenham Hotspur: Offer made for Caleb Chukwuemeka

Tottenham Hotspur are offering a player plus cash deal to lure Northampton Town striker Caleb Chukwuemeka to north London [Football Insider].

The Lowdown: Spurs gear up for the 2021/22 season

Slowly preparing for their reintroduction to competitive football in 2021/22, Spurs fans up and down the country will be praying that newly appointed manager Nuno Espirito Santo is able to secure his preferred targets across the field.

Signing up first-team stars like Pierluigi Gollini and Bryan Gil will be imperative to any prospective success, but keeping a keen eye on the next generation of talent will have significant long-term benefit for the club.

Following this train of thought, the north London outfit look set to test the waters for Northampton Town’s 19 year-old gem following recent reports.

The Latest: Tottenham eye player-plus-cash deal

According to a Spurs source at Football Insider, the Lilywhites are offering a deal rising to £1 million for Chukwuemeka’s signature.

Furthermore, Tottenham are also willing to include Derby-born forward Kion Etete to seal the transfer, who is currently on the books at Under-23’s level.

Chukwuemeka has impressed scouts in his time at the Cobblers, being watched extensively by his suitors’ recruitment adviser, David Pleat.

The Verdict: Chukwuemeka would be an astute signing for Tottenham

Likely looking to acquire players with plenty of room to develop under Nuno as they enter a new era, Chukwuemeka should be an ideal target for the Tottenham Hotspur hierarchy.

Bringing in young talent from the lower reaches of English football, such as Dele Alli, who has blossomed at the club, they have shown their ability to successfully enact this recruitment strategy in the past.

In 2020/21, Chukwuemeka enjoyed a breakthrough season with Northampton, registering three goal contributions in 28 fixtures; two goals and one assist [Transfermarkt].

Fleet of foot as well as technically gifted, there is certainly scope that he could develop into an established footballer in years to come.

Once labelled as a ‘great’ player by former manager Keith Curle, Spurs should look to close a deal ahead of any potential rivals in the race [Northampton Chronicle].

Three centurions make it Sri Lanka's day

On a slow, benign SSC track, the Sri Lankan batsmen accumulated ruthlessly, and looked set for an imposing total that could rule out a defeat, helped along the way by the Indian fielders who did not accept some of the half-chances that came their way

How they were out

On a slow, benign SSC track, Sri Lanka accumulated ruthlessly, and looked set to get themselves a total that would rule out a defeat. They were helped by the Indian fielders who did not accept the half-chances that came their way. Three contrasting centuries were scored: Mahela Jayawardene was elegant from start to finish, Malinda Warnapura surer and grittier than yesterday, and Thilan Samarweera – who came in to bat when the fielders and bowlers were at their most tired – almost unobtrusively capitalised with an unbeaten 111.There were gripping passages of play when an Indian bowler bowled well from one end, but that didn’t translate into breaks for them. Also India would have ended with one more wicket but for the review system for umpiring decisions, which made its debut in this Test.Jayawardene, continuing his love affair with the SSC, set the agenda right in the first over of the day with a perfect cover-drive off Ishant Sharma. He continued to bat in much the same manner – he would have failed to look inelegant even if he had tried. When India tried to plug the leaks by setting defensive fields and not giving him anything to drive, he didn’t lose patience and settled down for his ninth century at the SSC, a record for the most centuries at a venue, which he now shares with Don Bradman (MCG). He now has 2198 runs at the SSC at an average of 81.4, which is 28.87% of his career runs.Warnapura, after an unconvincing fifty yesterday, batted with much more assurance, and seemed to have gained from his captain’s soothing presence at the other end. When India brought the scoring-rate down in the first session, it was Warnapura who broke the shackles with two boundaries off Harbhajan in one over. Harbhajan had conceded three runs in three overs till then, his next three went for 23. When he slashed Ishant Sharma past gully just before lunch, he reached his second century in five Tests, his first at home.Samaraweera, who got off to a cautious start, almost played on to Harbhajan on 16. But he settled down soon, and even before the tired fielders and bowlers knew what had hit them, Samaraweera had reached his 50 off 86 deliveries. Post tea, even after Ishant had got Jayawardene with a beauty, he picked up the scoring rate to move from 80 to 97 in eight deliveries, and then onto his seventh Test century, with a square cut.Two instances summed up the predicament for the Indian bowlers who had a forgettable day in the field. Jayawardene moved on to the front foot against Ishant; the bowler consciously shortened the length but Jayawardene had enough time to transfer the weight on to the back foot and cut, rolling his wrists over it. He played an identical shot the next ball and the message was clear: economy might be the best form of attack once the ball lost its shine for the pitch absorbed the pace and offered only slow movement.Review system comes into play In the 46th over India challenged an lbw decision by Mark Benson which had been given in favour of Malinda Warnapura. Harbhajan Singh had beaten Warnapura’s prod to hit the pad in front of middle and leg stump. The decision was reviewed by the third umpire Rudi Koertzen, and replays showed that while the ball was straightening marginally, it would have still missed leg stump. Warnapura was given not out. In the 106th over, Tillakaratne Dilshan was given out caught behind against Zaheer Khan by Benson. He asked for the decision to be reviewed and replays showed a puff of dust as the ball passed the batsman. The doubt was whether the bat had hit the ground and not the ball. After a discussion between Benson and Koertzen, Dilshan was ruled not out. In the 120th over, India asked for another lbw appeal to be reviewed when Dilshan was given not out. Replays indicated that the ball from Harbhajan had pitched outside leg and would have missed leg stump as well. India have one unsuccessful review left. Secondly, with Jayawardene on 93, Anil Kumble, the pick of Indian bowlers, beat him with a big legbreak. There was a faint edge to Dinesh Karthik but as it turned out, he was in no position to gather it, prompting Kumble to vent his frustrations. That was not the first catch India had dropped in the day. Jayawardene had earlier been dropped on 55, again by Karthik off Kumble. Warnapura was let off on 113 by VVS Laxman at gully just before Harbhajan ended his 115 with an offbreak that took the edge. Then Gautam Gambhir dropped Samaraweera, when the latter was on 53, off Harbhajan at forward short-leg. Admittedly they were all sharp chances, but on flat pitches the half-chances become all the more important. The other factor that hampered India was the no-balls: Zaheer Khan and Kumble the culprits. Zaheer had bowled three of them yesterday, and bowled seven more today while Kumble contributed with six of his own. Zaheer was also denied a wicket off one of them when he held on to a sharp return catch from Warnapura, then on 55.Another disconcerting aspect of the day’s play for India was that the bowlers failed to attack in pairs. When Zaheer started well in the morning, Ishant didn’t impress with the old ball; when Kumble was bowling a miserly spell in a tight phase of play before lunch, Harbhajan couldn’t support him. In the middle session, when Zaheer bowled a testing spell from round the stumps, getting occasional reverse-swing, runs kept coming from the other end. With the new ball, Ishant asked questions of batsmen, also bowling the delivery of the day to dismiss Jayawardene – it started to come in with the angle, but held its line, much in the same manner he had dismissed Ricky Ponting in Perth. But Zaheer failed to turn up from the other end, not bowling top pace, failing to get swing.Sri Lanka, to add insult to injury, ended up on right side of the three reviews of the umpiring decisions. When India appealed against an lbw decision given in favour of Warnapura, the ball – bowled from round the stumps by Harbhajan – had not straightened enough. When Tillakaratne Dilshan had been given out caught behind off Zaheer, Dilshan challenged successfully. In that case, Dilshan contended his bat had hit the ground, but the snickometer, which cannot be used to make the decision, showed the noise had occurred even before his bat hit the ground. In the last over of the day, to sum up their woeful day, India challenged again. This time the ball had pitched well outside the leg stump before striking Dilshan’s pads.

Bobby Duncan set to leave Derby County

Derby County striker Bobby Duncan looks set to leave the club this summer, according to an update from journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Duncan struggles at Derby

The 20-year-old joined the Rams on a three-year deal last summer, but has struggled to make his mark at the club.

Duncan made seven appearances for Derby’s Under-23 side, failing to score a single goal, and didn’t play once for the first team in the Championship.

The Latest: Striker set for exit

According to O’Rourke on Twitter on Tuesday, Duncan is in Denmark looking to complete a summer move to Vejle Boldklub.

It isn’t stated whether or not the potential move would be temporary or permanent, but given Derby’s use of him, it could well be the latter.

The Verdict: Career stalling

Duncan’s career has stalled badly after being seen as such a bright emerging talent at Liverpool, leaving on bad terms to join Fiorentina and not kicking on ever since.

For his sake, a move away from Derby could do him the world of good, with the youngster in need of playing regular football and finding his feet again – an inferior league could help him find his form.

His exit could hopefully generate some modicum of transfer funds for Wayne Rooney if it is a permanent deal, should the Rams’ transfer embargo be loosened.

In other news, some Derby fans have bemoaned an update regarding manager Wayne Rooney. Read more here.

The pressure is on the home side – Malik

The pressure of these matches may be receding with familiarity but ShoaibMalik, Pakistan’s captain, reckons the hosts will feel the heat a little bit

At least in Tabarak Dar’s mind there is no question which is the better team between India and Pakistan. Twice, the Hong Kong captain has been asked this and twice he has been emphatic with his verdict. “On current form there is no doubt that India are the stronger side,” he said. Many will demur but Pakistan and India potentially play three times in this tournament so an answer will soon be evident. The pressure in these matches may be receding with familiarity but ShoaibMalik, Pakistan’s captain, reckons the hosts will feel the heat a little bit. “A little difference is made from playing so often but in both our countries, crowds want a win all the time. There is a little more pressure on us being at home, but we are confident going into the Indiagame.”It is likely that Pakistan will go in with the same XI and that Malik opensagain, though only after looking at the surface. “We want to keep thesame side, but it will depend on the wicket,” Malik said.Malik will hope the top-order collapse against Hong Kong was a blip butwill also want some contributions from his middle-order, where Misbah-ul-Haq andShahid Afridi have gone a number of innings without a fifty. Thoughcriticism of Misbah should be offset by his position in the batting order- one fifty in his last 12 innings hides his position nestled most oftenat six or seven – Afridi’s batting form is a worry, with only one fifty in his last22 ODIs.”Misbah bats lower down the order but whenever he bats he makes a 30 or40,” Malik said. “He bats in difficult situations lower down so that makes a difference.Anyway no player scores in every match.”Afridi’s situation is more complex. Though his batting has been poor, hehas almost become a specialist bowler. In his last 22 matches, he hasbowled his full quota 16 times, picking up 34 wickets in the process.Ramiz Raja, the former Pakistan captain, believes Afridi needs a move up the order to regain some confidence. “I’ve been noticing a difference in the way he bats for quitesometime,” Ramiz told . “He seems to hesitate a lot. I’mnot sure why but that is certainly affecting his batting.”I think the only way Afridi can overcome this lean patch is by batting upthe order. He should be opening the innings. That way he would get plentyof overs and I’m sure that within a few games, he would be in full flowagain.”I believe the team management will have to rethink Afridi’s position ashis batting is falling apart. He is too big an asset for Pakistan cricketand needs to be utilised properly.”
