A maiden half-century for Luke Procter carried Lancashire Lightning to an entertaining four-wicket Clydesdale Bank 40 win over Worcestershire Royals at Liverpool. Procter, the 22-year-old coming to the end of his first season on the club’s professional staff, shared a crucial sixth-wicket partnership of 62 inside 11 overs with debutant Jordan Clark as they chased down 259.He and Stephen Parry, who hit the winning runs with five balls to spare, finished the job off.Left-hander Procter top scored with 64 not out off 59 balls, including six fours and a six, to go alongside Steven Croft’s 60 off 35 balls. The battle for fourth place in Group A looked to be going Worcestershire’s way after Alexei Kervezee’s county best 111 off 101 balls had helped post a competitive 258 for 6 against a home side including only four first team regulars.Left arm spinner Gary Keedy claimed season’s best 4 for 41 from his eight overs to keep the hosts in the game at the halfway stage. But, having been 172 for 3 after 30 overs with Kervezee at the crease, the Royals could feasibly have posted 20 or so more than they did.Kervezee, the 20-year-old right hander who hit 11 fours, was at his strongest making room to hit through and over the cover region.Nobody else managed to better Daryl Mitchell’s boundary-less 40 off 54 balls although Vikram Solanki and James Cameron made valuable contributions in the twenties. Kervezee and Mitchell shared 96 for the fourth wicket inside 29 overs.Keedy had Solanki stumped, Shakib Al Hasan caught at mid-off, he bowled Mitchell and had Kervezee caught at long-off. Steven Cheetham, recalled from a loan spell at Surrey to play, and Croft were the other wicket takers for Lancashire.Imran Arif removed Paul Horton in the second over of the Lightning chase but Croft and Karl Brown (41) shared 89 in 11 overs for the second wicket. Croft hit 10 fours and a pulled six.But he was one of three quick wickets to fall to take the score from 101 for 1 in the 13th over to 120 for 4 in the 18th.He holed out to Jack Shantry off the left arm spin of Bangladeshi Shakib, who also trapped Mark Chilton lbw. Brown then reverse swept Moeen Ali’s offspin to Shantry at short third man.Gareth Cross (28) and Procter then steadied the Lancashire ship somewhat with a 49-run partnership in eight overs for the fifth wicket before the former was caught in the deep off Moeen trying to hit his third six. Procter and Clark (32) then united before the former was key in clinching two points that were in the balance with 19 needed off two overs.A huge six from Procter over long on off the bowling of Shantry was a telling blow. Moeen and Shakib finished with 2 for 29 and 2 for 40 from eight overs respectively.

Ranjit Saini named president of Cricket Canada

Ranjit Saini has been elected president of Cricket Canada. In the election held at the Annual General Meeting on March 22, Saini was elevated from his position as first-vice president

Cricinfo staff26-Mar-2010Ranjit Saini has been elected president of Cricket Canada. In the election held at the Annual General Meeting on March 22, Saini was elevated from his position as first vice president. His promotion was widely expected since Saini has been fulfilling the president role over recent months. He has overseen a difficult period for the administration with the loss of sponsors Scotiabank in November last year but has however, outlined a series of ambitious plans, including staging international fixtures at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. It must be said, however, little tangible progress has been made on many of the plans as yet.Other executives elected at the meeting are Vimal Hardat (second vice president) and Calvin Clarke who was re-elected secretary. Ravin Moorthy was elected first vice president to fill the seat vacated by Saini.

Celtic could make more January signings

Celtic could still look to sign another winger and defender in the January transfer window, according to The Daily Record’s Scott Burns.

The Lowdown: Three in the door

The Hoops officially announced the signings of Reo Hatate, Daizen Maeda and Yosuke Ideguchi on Friday morning.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-20/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The trio have been linked with moves to Scotland for some time, with Celtic confirming the news just hours before the January window opens.

Maeda will sign on loan with a compulsory purchase clause included for the summer, whereas Hatate and Ideguchi will pen four-and-a-half-year contracts, subject to the usual conditions and international clearance.

However, it seems as if the Hoops may not stop there, with two more possible arrivals over the coming weeks.

The Latest: Burns’ late-night news

Burns shared a story in the Daily Record late on Thursday evening regarding Celtic’s moves for Hatate, Maeda and Ideguchi.

Within his report, he revealed that ‘a move for another wide player and another possible defender haven’t been ruled out’, with the Hoops possibly receiving funds by moving on some fringe players.

The Verdict: Who could go?

It appears as if any further signings in January could be subject to offloading players, with the club reportedly looking to part ways with Vasilis Barkas and Boli Bolingoli.

Barkas cost £4.5m and Bolingoli £3m, so if the Hoops can receive fees anywhere close to what they paid for the two of them, it could be seen as excellent business, especially when you consider that Barkas and Bolingoli have made just four appearances combined under Ange Postecoglou.

It’s good to see that Celtic have acted quickly when it comes to securing the Japanese trio, and attention could now turn to departures before looking at further arrivals. Exciting times lie ahead…

McDonald, 29, will now miss 10 of Leicestershire’s 16 Twenty20 cup matches, plus an County Championship game against Worcestershire. The allrounder’s call-up came on the day he made 113 out of Leicestershire’stotal of 291, and then took one for 14 in seven overs of impressive swing bowling as Glamorgan were skittled out for 166. However, the visitors dragged themselves right back into the game as they sent Leicestershire crashing to 45 for 5 in their second innings, a lead of 170.Seventeen wickets fell for 239 runs during the day and leaves the outcome ofthe game in the balance. David Harrison and James Harris took four wickets between them in just two overs as Leicestershire slumped to 17 for 4, with only James Taylor reachingdouble figures.McDonald’s inclusion in the Australia A squad for two four-day games and fourone-day matches against Sri Lanka took Leicestershire by surprise and chiefexecutive David Smith said: “It is a massive blow to us but we will not bebringing in a replacement for the Twenty20.”McDonald, who resumed on 86 not out, reached his first century for Leicestershire when he edged Will Owen to fine leg for his 10th boundary in a 179-ball innings. He struck two more fours before providing a catch to wicketkeeper Mark Wallace chasing a wide delivery from Harrison. That gave Harrison figures of four for 71, with Harris taking three for 74.But with the ball swinging prodigiously and the pitch showing signs of variable bounce, Leicestershire’s attack fared even better. Gareth Rees and Mark Cosgrove shared an opening stand of 41, which proved to be the biggest partnership of the day’s play. Rees was first to go and after that it became a procession.Matthew Hoggard bowled superbly to claim 4 for 32, left-arm seamer HarryGurney took 2 for 33 and left-arm spinner Claude Henderson picked up two latewickets for eight runs in six overs. Wallace top scored for Glamorgan with 36 off 65 balls, and with a lead of 125 the home side looked in a healthy position. But their second innings fell apart in alarming fashion with Matt Boyce, PaulNixon, Tom New and McDonald all being dismissed in the space of two overs byHarrison and Harris. James Allenby then trapped Joshua Cobb lbw just before the close.

Haven't backed out of Pak tour – Hassan

Bangladesh Cricket Board will send a second security team to Pakistan in two years to elucidate their commitment to tour the country, which was denied by ICC vice-president AHM Mustafa Kamal last week

Mohammad Isam12-Jan-2013The Bangladesh Cricket Board will send a security team to Pakistan – second in two years – to show their commitment to tour the country after ICC vice-president AHM Mustafa Kamal had denied any “unconditional commitment” from Bangladesh to tour Pakistan three days ago. BCB president Nazmul Hassan has questioned Kamal’s conflicting statement, and will ask the game’s governing body for clarification on his comments.”We think it is time to send a second security team,” Hassan said. “A lot of time has passed from the last inspection [in March last year]. We will sit in the next few days with the government about forming the team.”We haven’t made any specific decisions about a tour date but we discussed our end of the problem with him [PCB president Zaka Ashraf]. We talked about a time slot, which will be between the end of March and the start of April.”Hassan met Ashraf in New Delhi during the third ODI between India and Pakistan where, according to the BCB chief, the talks were cordial and lacked any ‘negative vibe’. “What I explained to him was the reason behind Bangladesh not travelling [to Pakistan] this time. He understood our problem, was reasonable and his hospitality was really good.”What he said to [ESPNcricinfo] was not what he told me. I still believe that based on our cordial discussion, the Pakistani players will take part in BPL. I think it is a knee-jerk reaction, because what we discussed in Delhi didn’t give me a negative vibe.”

I don’t say anything without confirming and without knowing, so what he said was completely wrong. I have all the proof.Nazmul Hassan on Mustafa Kamal’s statement

Regarding Kamal’s comments about there being no commitment to tour Pakistan, Hassan reacted strongly, mentioning the exact dates of sending letters and the exact language. “I don’t say anything without confirming and without knowing, so what he said was completely wrong. I have all the proof.”On April 12 last year, a letter was sent from the BCB, [which mentioned that] we were going there to play, but that tour didn’t happen due to a court ruling. The second letter was sent from here on October 8 where a timeline of December 12 to 20 was given for touring.”Both these letters were sent during his [Kamal’s] time. The directors told me they don’t know anything about the letter. Our CEO made all the communications on behalf of the board. He told me that it was Kamal who asked him to send the letters,” he said.Hassan showed the minutes of the April 15, 2012 ICC meeting to the media, the words on Bangladesh’s tour highlighted in green. “We go back to April last year when we sent a letter on the 12th. On the April 15 ICC meeting, it was written in the minutes that Bangladesh will go to play in Pakistan, and they would have to go even if the ICC don’t send match officials. We cannot cancel the tour, we have to go.”I don’t know if there can be any more difficult conditions for touring. I also saw that only Mustafa Kamal was present from Bangladesh in that meeting. If the minutes of the ICC meeting are challenged by the ICC, we would like to be clarified on this issue. We would also ask them why such a thing was written in the minutes when the vice-president himself is saying such a thing was not discussed,” he said.

Jamaica beat Canada by four wickets

Jamaica made hard work of their Digicel-sponsored Jamaica Cricket Festival fifty-over contest against Canada, losing six wickets before labouring past the paltry target of 149 in the 29th over

Cricinfo staff09-Apr-2010Jamaica made hard work of their Digicel-sponsored Jamaica Cricket Festival fifty-over contest against Canada, losing six wickets before labouring past the paltry target of 149 in the 29th over.Despite having a below-par score to defend, Canada made a contest out of the encounter and showed their intentions from the very first delivery in the Jamaican response, getting rid of opener Danza Hyatt who was caught in the slips by Harvir Baidwan off the bowling of Henry Osinde. The Canadians were at it again minutes later when Donovan Pagon was sent on his way, caught by Rizwan Cheema off Khurram Chohan, to leave the Jamaicans precariously poised at 3 for 2.Things looked even worse for the locals when Carlton Baugh and captain Tamar Lambert, who went for a first-ball duck, were sent packing with the score on 64. Opener Brenton Parchment was the saviour for the hosts with a responsible, unbeaten knock of 72 achieved at a run-a-ball, with ten fours. Hard-hitting lower-order batsman Andre Russell hastened the finish, crashing four boundaries in a rapid 19.Earlier in the day, David Bernard had Canada in trouble early, as the top three fell for single-figure scores. Captain Ashish Bagai stemmed the rot with a 64-ball 53, and he got some support from Usman Limbada and Sunil Dhaniram, before Odean Brown ran through the lower order. He finished with 4 for 33, as Canada folded for 148 in 41 overs.

Our shot-selection wasn't good – Sehwag

Virender Sehwag, as economical with words as with his technique, is not looking for any excuses after his side lost 15 wickets in 124.3 overs

Sidharth Monga in Galle21-Jul-2010Virender Sehwag, as economical with words as with his technique, is not looking for any excuses after his side lost 15 wickets in 124.3 overs and is still 63 runs behind Sri Lanka’s first-innings total, with a full day’s play to go. He said they were aware that their shot selection wasn’t good, that they were now hoping for rain to go with the best efforts of VVS Laxman and MS Dhoni.”Fantastic that we are getting a result even after losing one day’s play,” Sehwag said. “But it is bad for the Indian side. We are on the losing side unless VVS Laxman can play [well] tomorrow, and we are hopeful that after lunch or before tea, rain will come and the match gets washed out as a draw.”Asked about his shot to get out in the first innings, an attempted cut to a delivery that would have otherwise been called wide, with three fielders deep in the off side, Sehwag said: “That’s my scoring shot. If you look at the 7000 runs that I have scored, more than 3000 runs have come through the cut shot. In coming matches too, I will play the same shot. Sometimes you get out, sometimes you score runs. Almost every time, I score runs with the cut shot.”But aren’t India in the position because several batsmen played ill-advised shots? “Everybody is aware of that, but you can’t control certain things,” Sehwag said. “Sometimes you play that shot and you get away with that, sometimes you get out. That’s Test cricket where everybody has played enough matches. They are experienced. It happens in cricket.”Sehwag conceded the pitch hadn’t deteriorated enough to justify the scores and that it was “still a good track to bat on” which made him confident that India could still save the Test. “If you look at the last Test match that we played against South Africa, MS and VVS scored hundred-plus and remained not out and batted really well,” he said. “So they can do that. Laxman and Dravid did that against Australia in 2001, so we have the hope. Still we have one more pair of batsmen, they will go tomorrow and try and their best.”

Rafa must unleash Holgate vs Palace

Everton will travel to Selhurst Park today to face league position rivals, Crystal Palace, with both teams desperate to take three points from the game.

If Everton can seal the deal with a second consecutive win over Patrick Vieira’s side today, they have the chance of climbing back into the top half of the table, however, if they lose the game, Crystal Palace can leapfrog Everton and gain a spot in the top half, so it should be an interesting game for both sets of fans on Sunday afternoon.

One player who will more than likely make a return to the side for his eighth appearance for the Toffees this season is Mason Holgate.

The 25-year-old should start in the side today after Yerry Mina sustained yet another injury in Everton’s victory over Arsenal. That saw the defender subbed off in the 33rd minute with Rafa Benitez confirming that Mina will not be available for Everton’s Premier League fixture away from home this weekend.

Holgate has never been able to take himself to the next level but the defender was highly thought of by Carlo Ancelotti, who once said:

“He has the quality to be at the top as a defender. He is fast, strong physically and good with his head.

“He is really competitive. He is a fighter. But to be a fighter, you have to use this quality in the right way.”

There is currently a real window of opportunity for Holgate to establish himself in the defensive line by putting in important performances in the coming games ahead, with Mina injured and Lucas Digne reportedly entrapped in a feud with the manager, there has never been a better opportunity for the defender to prove he deserves to be in the starting eleven more consistently.

With 3.8 aerial duels won per game this term – more than any other Everton defender – he’s certainly got what it takes to bully Crystal Palace this afternoon.

Thus, £18m-rated gem could have a real impact on an important win that is needed for the Toffees today.

It could also be a career-defining moment for him as to whether Benitez believes he has what it takes to become a long term solution for an injury-plagued Mina, or whether he must go into the upcoming transfer window to find a defender who can improve upon the current situation for Everton.

Khan blitz downs Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s preparations for next week’s ICC World Twenty20 took another hit as they were again beaten by West Indies A in a practice Twenty20 match at Progress Park. Having been put in to bat, Zimbabwe could only make 124 for 8, with the lower middle order flopping, and after having West Indies in some strife the visitors were undone by a whirlwind innings from Imran Khan. The spinning pair of captain Prosper Utseya and Ray Price began will in Zimbabwe’s defence of a small total, and left West Indies at 23 for 3 in the fifth over. Graeme Cremer then got the in-form Kirk Edwards to nick one before Chamu Chibhabha snapped up Shane Dowrich for 1, and that brought the allrounder Khan to the crease. Along with Assad Fudadin he began a sensible recovery before exploding to smash an unbeaten 60 from 33 balls, inclusive of seven fours and three sixes. He and Fudadin (29) shared a match-winning 84-run stand off just 53 balls and that put Zimbabwe on the back foot. Fudadin fell with West Indies needing just five to win and the match was sealed when Jason Holder deposited a delivery from Chibhabha onto the roof of the pavilion.Zimbabwe were thus left to rue how they let the home side off the hook, as well as a poor batting card. They had begun well through a half-century stand between Chibhabha (33) and Hamilton Masakadza (27) but a collapse of 4 for 32 turned out to be decisive. Shane Shillingford was the wrecker-in-chief with four wickets and the fast bowler Nelon Pascal claimed 2 for 35.

With the Champions Cup first leg against Costa Rica's Deportivo Saprissa scoreless heading towards the half hour mark, the Norwegian fired a 40-yard back-pass to keeper Andre Blake, only for the Jamaican international to bizarrely misjudge the flight of the ball, leaping in the air to meet the pass only for it to bounce tamely past him and into the net.

The bizarre own goal will go down against Glesnes' name in the record books but opinion was split on social media as to who to blame. While Blake copped a lot of the flak, some fans pointed out that playing such a long looping back-pass on a wet and windy night in the Costa Rican capital was running a risk.

Whoever was to blame, Jim Curtin's side bounced back impressively with a second-half Julian Carranza hat-trick silencing a raucous crowd and giving Union a valuable advantage for the second leg.
